The continuum emission of an X1 flare on 26 March, 1970 observed close to the solar limb (N 05 E 64) was analyzed by a photometric determination of the contrast I()/I 0() in the wavelength range 3558–5920 Å. Two possible mechanisms for the emission were investigated, namely hydrogen Paschen and H continua. We show the unlikeness of the Paschen possibility and derive strong constraints on the temperature structure and energy deposition mechanism imposed by the H continuum process.We conclude that the emission must have originated in deep atmospheric layers. The relevance of this result with respect to flare energy release and transport processes is also discussed.  相似文献

White-light continuum was observed at the Norikura Solar Observatory in a 2B flare of 10 September 1974 in the spectral region between 3600 Å and 4000 Å. The duration of continuum emission was 8–12 min. The continuum shows a Balmer free-bound component, but the main contribution to the continuum between 3646 Å and 4000 Å is H emission. The white-light continuum, therefore, is thought to be of photospheric origin. The energy loss in the continuum is 1027 erg s–1.  相似文献

White-light flares are defined as those flares that produce significant enhancement of emission in the visible light continuum. The source of energy for this emission has not yet been identified with several possibilities being suggested: heating of the lower chromosphere by some mechanical or magnetic means, or by soft X-ray or extreme ultraviolet radiation from coronal loops being absorbed in the lower chromosphere and re-emitted in the visible.Using non-LTE radiative transfer calculations for hydrogen and helium in a simple model atmosphere we show that EUV ( < 912 Å) radiation cannot be the main energy source for white-light flares. Estimates of the observed energy emitted in the visible and the EUV indicate that there may be enough energy in the EUV to account for the white light flare with this mechanism. Using enhancements in the wavelength region below 912 Å of up to 7 × 109 ergs cm–2 s–1 ster–1 (5 × 105 times the estimated q radiation field) to represent flare EUV emission from above we investigated the non-LTE level populations for hydrogen and helium and the lower atmospheric heating resulting from this radiation. The basic result is that the opacities in the Lyman continuum and the helium I and II continua are so much larger than even the enhanced opacity in the visible hydrogen continuum that the EUV radiation is absorbed before it can have a significant effect in the visible light continuum. However, the EUV radiation can cause a significant enhancement of H emission.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy Inc. for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  相似文献

The observational data permit us to establish clear statistical correlations between different parameters of stellar flare activity and the characteristics of quiet stars. These relations are:
  1. between energies and frequencies of flares on stars of different luminosities;
  2. between total radiation energies of flares and quiet stars both in X-ray and Balmer emission lines;
  3. between flare decay rates just after the maxima and flare luminosities at maxima.

We consider potential sources of infrared (1 to 1 mm) continuum in solar flares. Several mechanisms should produce detectable fluxes: in the 350 window for ground-based observations, impulsive emission will arise in synchrotron radiation from 1–10 MeV electrons, and possibly thermal (free-free) continuum from the source of the white-light flare; the hot flare plasma responsible for soft X-ray emission will also emit detectable fluxes of free-free continuum in the largest flares. At shorter wavelengths the dominant infrared emission will come from the H flare itself. Observations in the infrared wavelengths will help to complete our picture of flare structure in both the impulsive and gradual phases.  相似文献

We study the effect of chromospheric bombardment by an electron beam during solar flares. Using a semi-empirical flare model, we investigate energy balance at temperature minimum level and in the upper photosphere. We show that non-thermal hydrogen ionization (i.e., due to the electrons of the beam) leads to an increase of chromospheric hydrogen continuum emission, H population, and absorption of photospheric and chromospheric continuum radiation. So, the upper photosphere is radiatively heated by chromospheric continuum radiation produced by the beam. The effect of hydrogen ionization is an enhanced white-light emission both at chromospheric and photospheric level, due to Paschen and H continua emission, respectively. We then obtain white-light contrasts compatible with observations, obviously showing the link between white-light flares and atmospheric bombardment by electron beams.  相似文献

We examine empirical atmospheric structures that are consistent with enhanced white-light continuum emission in solar flares. This continuum can be produced either by hydrogen bound-free emission in an enhanced region in the upper chromosphere, or by H- emission in an enhanced region around the temperature minimum. In the former case, weak Paschen jumps in the spectrum will be present, with the spectrum being dominated by a strong Balmer continuum, while in the latter case the spectrum exhibits a weaker, flat enhancement over the entire visible spectrum.We find that when proper account is taken of radiative backwarming processes, the two enhanced atmospheric regions above are not independent, in that irradiation by Balmer continuum photons from the upper chromosphere creates sufficient heating around the temperature minimum to account for the temperature enhancements there. Thus the problem of main phase white-light flare production reduces to one of creating temperature enhancements of order 104 K in the upper chromosphere; radiative backwarming then naturally accounts for the enhancements of order 100 K around the temperature minimum.Heating by electron and proton bombardment, and by XUV irradiation from above, are then considered as candidates for creating the necessary enhancements in the upper chromosphere. We find that electron bombardment can be ruled out, whereas bombardment by protons in the few-MeV energy range is a viable candidate, but one without strong observational support. The XUV irradiation hypothesis is examined by incorporating it self-consistently into the PANDORA radiative transfer algorithm used to construct the empirical model atmospheres; we find that the introduction of XUV radiation, with flux and spectrum appropriate to white-light flare events, does indeed produce sufficient radiative heating in the upper chromosphere to balance the radiative losses associated with the required temperature enhancements.In summary, we find that the radiative coupling of (i) the upper chromosphere and temperature minimum regions (through Balmer continuum photons) and (ii) the transition region and upper chromosphere (through XUV photons) can account for white-light emission in solar flares.Presidential Young Investigator.  相似文献

Results are given of the detailed analysis of fourteen Fe xxv-xxiii lines ( = 1.850–1.870 Å) in the spectra of a solar flare on 16 Nov. 1970. The spectra were obtained with a resolution of about 4 × 10–4 Å, which revealed lines not previously observed and allowed the measurement of line profiles. The measured values of the wavelengths and emission fluxes are presented and compared with theoretical calculations. The analysis of the contour of the Fe xxv line ( = 1.850 Å) leads to the conclusion that there is unidirectional macroscopic gas motion in the flare region with the velocity (projection on the line of sight) ± 90 km s–1.Measurements of the 8.42 Å Mg xii and 9.16 Å Mg xi lines in the absence of solar flares indicate prolonged existence of active regions on the solar disk with T e = 4–6 × 106K and emission measure ME 1048 cm–3. The profile of the Mg xii line indicates a macroscopic ion motion with a velocity up to 100 km s–1.  相似文献

X-ray spectra of solar flares in the spectral range from 8.5 Å to 16 Å have been obtained from a Naval Research Laboratory crystal spectrometer flown on the sixth Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-6). A list of emission features is presented and tentative identifications of some of the features are suggested. The time-behavior of the emission lines during flares is discussed, and the possibility of determining electron densities in flare plasmas using density sensitive lines of highly ionized iron is considered. Approximate calculations are performed for a density sensitive line of Fexxii.  相似文献

The total radiative output in the EUV continuum (1400–1960 Å) from the 5 September 1973 flare has been obtained from the EUV spectra of the flare observed with the NRL slit spectrograph (SO82B) on Skylab. The radiative energy in the EUV continuum is of the order of 1029 ergs, which is more than a factor of 2 greater than those radiated in soft X-rays (8–20 Å) and in H for the flare. Thus, the EUV continuum emission is an important radiative energy loss, and should be included in the consideration of the energy balance of the flare.Ball Corporation.Now at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.  相似文献

Solar X-ray observations from balloons and from the SMM and HINOTORI spacecraft have revealed evidence for a super-hot thermal component with a temperature of 3 × 107 K in many solar flares, in addition to the usual 10–20 × 106 K soft X-ray flare plasma. We have systematically studied the decay phase of 35 solar flare X-ray events observed by ISEE-3 during 1980. Based on fits to the continuum X-ray spectrum in the 4.8–14 keV range and to the intensity of the 1.9 Å feature of iron lines, we find that 15 (about 43%) of the analyzed events have a super-hot thermal component in the decay phase of the flare. In this paper the important properties of the super-hot thermal component in the decay phase are summarized. It is found that an additional input of energy is required to maintain the super-hot thermal components. Finally, it is suggested that the super-hot thermal component in the decay phase is created through the reconnection of the magnetic field during the decay phase of solar flares.  相似文献

Radio-silent -ray flares are solar flares that lack any significant emission in the (non-thermal) radio wave band during their impulsive hard X-ray and -ray emission phases. Flares with extremely suppressed long-wavelength spectra have previously been reported by White et al. (1992) and have been discussed in different context by Hudson and Ryan (1995). A striking example of a radio-silent flare was observed by SMM during the onset of the 6 March 1989 energetic -ray flare. We argue that the absence of radio emission at wavelengths longer than microwave wavelengths is an indication of the compactness of the flare rather than that the flare did not exhibit non-thermal properties. Probably the flare site was restricted to altitudes above the photosphere in a newly emerging loop configuration lower than the equivalent altitude corresponding to an emission frequency of 1.4 GHz. This implies the presence of a dense and highly magnetized closed field configuration confining the electron component which causes the impulsive -ray continuum. Reconnection in such a configuration did not lead to open magnetic fields and streamer formation. Acceleration of particles in the and hard X-ray bursts was restricted to closed field lines. Thermal expansion of the loop system may subsequently lead to the generation of radially propagating blast waves in the solar corona which are accompanied by type II solar radio bursts and decimetre emissions. The emission during the onset of the flare was dominated by a continuum originating from electron bremsstrahlung at X-ray and -ray energies with only little evidence for the presence of energetic ions. It is, therefore, concluded that energetic electrons have been primary and not secondary products of the particle acceleration process.  相似文献

The recent observations of solar flares, made with a Lyot filter and a spectrograph in H, HeD3, higher Balmer lines, metallic lines, and continuum, are discussed. It is important to study the energy supply of non thermal particle/ conduction/ irradiation into the lower atmosphere from the optical observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Simultaneous observations from ground-based observatories and instruments on board satellites are necessary for understanding flare plasma of low and high energy.  相似文献

Observational properties of two white-light flares (WLFs), on June 15, 1991, and June 26, 1999, are presented and compared. This is of particular interest, because the former was one of the most intense flares of X-ray class X12, while the latter was a compact flare of class M2.3. Significant differences between some flare parameters (GOES class, Hα classification, the number of WLF kernels and their location in the sunspot group, the size and duration of the WLF emission, and the peak flux density of the microwave emission) have been found. However, both these events had approximately the same powers of the emission per unit area in continuum near 658.0 nm: E = 1.5 × 107 and 1.1. × 107 erg cm?2 s?1 nm?1. There is generally a good temporal coincidence between the microwave and hard X-ray emissions and the WLF emission during the impulsive phase, but the light curve of the WLF emission on June 26, 1999, shows a stronger correlation with the X-ray emission in the energy range 14–23 keV. Both flares can be classified by their spectral characteristics as type I white-light flares.  相似文献

The increasingly high flux predicted to the violet of 4500 Å by many model solar atmospheres stands in contradiction to the observations. Since one possible cause of the disagreement is that the solar windows by which the observed continuum is established might be obscured by line wings, we have made detailed calculations of these narrow spectral regions. With the exception of a few windows affected by the wings of Balmer lines, those redward of the Balmer discontinuity appear free of line blanketing. Even the assumption that the ultraviolet continuum is depressed 5% by unseen lines not included in our calculations leaves substantial disagreements between the models and observations. The discrepancies could perhaps be explained by a veil of weak lines across the ultraviolet spectrum.Our calculations indicate that the windows become narrower at shorter wavelengths. Many of the ambiguities to the violet of 3600 Å would be resolved if spectrophotometric tracings with a band pass of 10 mÅ were available.  相似文献

Spectrograph and multiple-band polarimeter observations of the 24 April 1981 white-light flare indicate the presence of an optical continuum with intensity increasing strongly below 4000 Å. The flare emission (lines and continuum combined) is unpolarized and, at 3600 Å, exceeds the brightness of the background solar surface by 360%. Analysis of the spectrum between 3600 and 8200 Å, at a location three arc sec from the brightest point in the kernel, yields a probable temperature of 6700 K for the continuum emitting layer. The wavelength dependence of the continuum indicates emission by both negative hydrogen (H?) and Balmer continuum, with the H? probably originating in the upper photosphere at a height (above τ5000 Å = 1) in the range 200–300 km. Analysis of the Balmer lines and continuum yields an electron density 5.3 × 1013 cm?3 and a second-level hydrogen column density 1.1 × 1016 cm?2. The peak radiative output integrated over wavelength is 6.1 × 1027 erg s?1. The observed continuum intensity, if originating at a height of 300 km, implies an energy loss rate of 103 erg s?1 cm?3.  相似文献

Recent atomic data have been used to analyze a solar flare spectrum obtained with the Goddard Space Flight Center's grating spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite. There exist in the wavelength region 90–200 Å strong lines from each of the ions Fe xviii-Fe xxiv. The Fe xxi lines can be used as an electron density diagnostic for the 107 K plasma. From our analysis of a particular flare, we find a steep positive slope in the emission measure between 106.5 and 107.2 K and an electron density of 4 × 1011 cm–3 at 107 K. We emphasise the need for high spectral and spatial resolution observations of solar flares in this wavelength region, which has to date been largely neglected.  相似文献

The spectra of two powerful flares with approximately the same intensities in the optical region but with different spectral features and power in other regions are studied. One of them is the unique flare which occurred on October 28, 2003, importance X17.2/4B, ranking third in magnitude among the recorded flares. Another occurred on September 1, 1990, 3B importance. The flares vary in the Balmer decrement. The flare of October 28, 2003, has a ratio of I(Hβ)/I(Hα) = 1.47. This is the largest value for solar flares ever observed. The flares also differ in magnitude of the D Na I lines emission: the emission of the flare of October 28, 2003, is substantially larger than that of the other flare. The chromosphere models of the flares are computed using the observed profiles of Balmer lines and D Na I lines. The satisfactory agreement of the calculated and observed profiles is obtained for the two-component models in which a hot component occupies 6% of the area. The hot component of the chromosphere model is characterized with the dense condensation available in the upper layers. For the flare of October 28, 2003, this condensation is located deeper and its substance concentration is greater than that for another flare. The Hα line intensity for the model hot component alone is approximately 30 and the continuous spectrum intensity is approximately 3% of the undisturbed level. The photosphere model is computed using the observed profiles of photosphere lines for the flare of October 28, 2003. It is found that very broad profiles of individual sigma-components of the Fe I λ 525.0 nm line may be only explained by the presence of magnetic fields having different directions. A great difference is detected between values of the magnetic field strength obtained in the splitting of sigma-components and those provided by simulation.  相似文献

All four large EUV bursts (peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancements 2 ergs cm–2 s–1 at 1 AU as deduced from sudden frequency deviations), for which there were available concurrent white light observations of at least fair quality, were detected as white light flares. The rise times and maxima of the white light emissions coincided with rise times and maxima of the EUV bursts. The frequency of strong EUV bursts suggests that white light flares may occur at the rate of five or six per year near sunspot maximum. All of the white light flare areas coincided with intense bright areas of the H flares. These small areas appeared to be sources of high velocity ejecta in H. The white light flares occurred as several knots or patches of 2 to 15 arc-sec diameter, with bright cores perhaps less than 2 arc-sec diameter (1500 km). They preferred the outer penumbral borders of strong sunspots within 10 arc-sec of a longitudinal neutral line in the magnetic field. The peak continuum flux enhancement over the 3500–6500 Å wavelength range is about the same order of magnitude as the peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancement.  相似文献

We derive an occurrence frequency for white-light flares (WLF) of 15.5 ± 4.5 yr?1 during a 2.6 year period following the maximum of solar cycle 21. This compares with a frequency 5–6 yr?1 derived by McIntosh and Donnelly (1972) during solar cycle 20. We find that the higher frequency of the more recently observed WLFs is due to the availability of patrol data at shorter wavelengths (λ ? 4000 Å), where the contrast of the flare emission is increased; the improved contrast has allowed less energetic (and hence more frequently occurring) events to be classified as WLFs. We find that sufficient conditions for the occurrence of a WLF are: active region magnetic class = delta; sunspot penumbra class = K, with spot group area ≥ 500 millionths of the solar hemisphere; 1–8 Å X-ray burst class ≥ X2.  相似文献
