Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) measurements obtained from a large number of compact radio sources (nearly 150 sources) distributed over the heliocentric distance range 15–175 solar radii (R() and heliographic latitude 75° N-75° S have been used to study the global three-dimensional density distribution of the solar wind plasma. Contours of constant electron-density fluctuations (N e) in the heliospheric plasma obtained for both the solar minimum and maximum show a strong solar latitude dependence. During low solar activity, the equatorial density-fluctuation value decreases away from the equator towards higher latitudes and is reduced by 2.5 times at the poles; the level of turbulence is reduced by a factor of 7; the solar-wind mass flux density at the poles is 25% lower than the equatorial value. However, during high solar activity, the average distribution of density fluctuations becomes spherically symmetric. In the ecliptic, the variation of N e with the heliocentric distance follows a power law of the formR –2.2 and it does not show any change with solar activity.  相似文献

The possible natural large-scale pulsations of the solar wind cavity are examined. The period of the pulsationsT2R/a (R is the size of the cavity,a is the sound velocity in the interstellar space near the solar system) may vary from a year to tens of years. The relevant new type of cosmic ray variations is predicted.  相似文献

A technique is proposed for separating the rays of the streamer belt with quasi-stationary and non-stationary solar wind (SW) flows. It is shown that the lifetime of rays with a quasi-stationary SW can exceed 20 days. A new method has been developed for measuring the relative density distribution of a quasi-stationary slow SW flowing along the streamer belt's ray of increased brightness, based on the LASCO/SOHO data. It is shown that the density n for such SW flows varies with the radius R according to the relationship nR , where =13.3–3.9 within 4 R 0 R 6 R 0 (here R 0 is the solar radius), and decreases gradually further away. It is also shown that the V(R)-profiles in some rays of the streamer belt differ little from each other, although the value of the mass flow density, j E, at the Earth's orbit in them can vary more than by a factor of 4. This distinguishes in a crucial respect a slow SW in the streamer belt's rays from a fast SW originating in coronal holes, for which j Econstant and the dependences V(R) in different fast flows can differ greatly.  相似文献

A 3 mm low noise beam-lead Schottky diode mixer has been developed. At cryogenic temperatures the conversion loss is 6.3 dB, and the DSB mixer noise temperature is 75 K, respectively. The mixer was installed into the cooled receiver for radioastronomical observations at the Metsähovi 13.7-m radio telescope. Total DSB noise temperature of the cooled receiver with an ultra low noise HEMT IF amplifier was 110 K at 103 GHz. The tuning range of the mixer mount was from 70 GHz to 115 GHz.  相似文献

A statistical study of Faraday rotation fluctuations (FRF) has been performed using polarization angle data of S-band (f = 2.3 GHz) radio spacecraft signals. The measurements were recorded during the recurring superior conjunctions of the Helios probes, during which the solar proximate point of the radio ray path reached heliocentric distances between 3 and 34 R. The most commonly found temporal FRF spectra are power laws with an average spectral index 1.5 over the frequency range from 1 mHz < v < 10 mHz. The FRF variance decreases with heliocentric distance, the falloff exponent being 8 for R < 6 R and 3 for distances 8 < R < 6 R < 16 R. The results are interpreted under the assumption that the FRF are produced by Alfvén waves propagating in the coronal plasma. For the applicable range of heliocentric distances it is shown that Alfvén waves are in a regime of free propagation and probably transfer much of their energy to the kinetic energy of the solar wind. The spatial power spectrum of magnetic field fluctuations is inferred to be strongly anisotropic, the irregularities extending along the background magnetic field with axial ratios of the order of 10.  相似文献

An analysis of the longitudinal distribution of gamma rays from SAS-II data has been carried out using the available information on the gas distribution in the Galaxy. The overall distribution of cosmic rays in the galactic plane can be represented by an exponential function in galactocentric distance with a scale length of 8 kpc upto the solar circle and 10 kpc beyond. There is no evidence for a large gradient of the cosmic ray intensity in the outer parts of the Galaxy. The local emissivities of gamma rays in the energy regionsE >100 MeV and 35 MeV<E <100 MeV are (1.73±0.27)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) and (2.40±0.41)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) respectively. The contribution of °-decay gamma rays is 80% forE >100 MeV and 20% at lower energies. The electron spectrum required by this analysis has a power law spectral index of about –2.7 below a few hundred MeV. The observed gas distribution towards the galactic centre would predict a gamma-ray flux larger than observed. It is suggested that the molecular gas in the central region may be in the form of dense coudlets, in which low evergy cosmic rays do not penetrate; in this case the centre should be seen as a strong source only at high energies. An analysis of the radio sky survey map of the Galaxy at 408 MHz shows thatB varies with a scale-length of 40 kpc; no significance can be attached to the apparent deviation from the equipartition of energy densities between cosmic rays and magnetic field. The derived local emissivity is (1.46±0.28)×10–40 W/((m3 Hz), which corresponds toB 5 G. The surface brightness of radio and gamma-ray emissions in the Galaxy decreases from the centre with scale-lengths 6 kpc and 7 kpc respectively. No positive correlation can be noticed with either co-rotation radius or pattern speed, when compared with external spiral galaxies.  相似文献

It is shown on the basis of analyzing the LASCO/SOHO data that the main quasi-stationary solar wind (SW), with a typical lifetime of up to 10 days, flows in the rays of the streamer belt. Depending on R, its velocity increases gradually from V3 km s–1 at R1.3 R to V170 km s–1 at R15 R . We have detected and investigated the movement of the leading edge of the main solar wind at the stage when it occupied the ray, i.e., at the formative stage of a quasi-stationary plasma flow in the ray. It is shown that the width of the leading edge of the main SW increases almost linearly with its distance from the Sun. It is further shown that the initial velocity of the inhomogeneities (`blobs') that travel in the streamer belt rays increases with the distance from the Sun at which they originate, and is approximately equal to the velocity of the main solar wind which carries them away. The characteristic width of the leading edge of the `blob' R , and remains almost unchanging as it moves away from the Sun. Estimates indicate that the main SW in the brightest rays of the streamer belt to within distances at least of order R3 R represents a flow of collisional magnetized plasma along a radial magnetic field.  相似文献

The cooling effect of emission in the spectral lines, which dominates over continuous emission in the chromosphere and becomes important first around the temperature minimum, modifies greatly the radiative relaxation timet r in the solar atmosphere. This rises from low photospheric values to a maximum of 8 min just aboveT min, falls in the low chromosphere to 1.5 min because of line emission, but rises again to 6 min atT 7000–8400 K in the chromosphere where hydrogen ionization increases the specific heat.  相似文献

We use a simple equation of state, in which the adiabatic index depends on opacity and ionization and we integrate the dynamical and thermodynamical equations for the gravitational collapse of a typical solar composition protocloud, up to the virialization of the energies. Following the evolution of the thermal energy and ionization fraction, violent bounces are obtained at the sudden hardening of the equation of state, when the material becomes ionized. We also suggest a mechanism to explain the onset of protostellar winds. We introduce radiation losses in the model, and integrate again the modified equations, studying the evolution of a 1.1M protocloud. The object's effective temperature stays in a confined small zone of the IR region throughout its fast (40 yr) evolution and its luminosity oscillates and decreases from 5000L to 500L . The radius starts from 35 AU and shrinks down to 140R , before a physical instability gives birth to a strong shock wave with consequent mass loss.  相似文献

We observed Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radio waves from the Crab Nebula (Tau A) at 4170 MHz during solar coronal occultations in June 1971–75. Mean amplitudes of the variations of position angle are larger in an active phase of the solar cycle than in a quiet phase. In occultations in 1971 and 1973, the position angle of the polarization varied oscillatory by 20–50 degrees due to local magnetic structures in the corona with a typical scale-length of about 0.5 R . In 1974, we observed a typical variation of position angle of polarization which is expected from a Y-shaped field configuration in coronal streamers. The Faraday rotation is enhanced when the line of sight to Tau A passes through strong coronal magnetic fields computed from magnetograph observations, while the rotation is suppressed when the line of sight passes through large coronal holes observed in X-rays. Short-time oscillation of the rotation angle observed in 1971 and 1973 suggests that neutral sheets in coronal streamers oscillate at a period of 3 hours with an amplitude of 1 R at a distance of 10 R from the Sun.  相似文献

A highly anisotropic packet of solar electron intensities was observed on 6 April 1971 with a sensitive electrostatic analyzer array on the Earth-orbiting satellite IMP-6. The anisotropies of intensities at electron energies of several keV were factors 10 favoring the expected direction of the interplanetary magnetic lines of force from the Sun. The directional, differential intensities of solar electrons were determined over the energy range 1–40 keV and peak intensities were 102 cm–2 s–1 sr–1 eV–1 at 2–6 keV. This anisotropic packet of solar electrons was detected at the sattelite for a period of 4200 s and was soon followed by isotropic intensities for a relatively prolonged period. This impulsive emission was associated with the onsets of an optical flare, soft X-ray emission and a radio noise storm at centimeter wavelengths on the western limb of the Sun. Simultaneous measurements of a type III radio noise burst at kilometric wavelengths with a plasma wave instrument on the same satellite showed that the onsets for detectable noise levels ranged from 500 s at 178 kHz to 2700 s at 31.1 kHz. The corresponding drift rate requires a speed of 0.15c for the exciting particles if the emission is at the electron plasma frequency. The corresponding electron energy of 6 keV is in excellent agreement with the above direct observations of the anisotropic electron packet. Further supporting evidence that several-keV solar electrons in the anisotropic packet are associated with the emission of type III radio noise beyond 50R is provided by their time-of-arrival at Earth and the relative durations of the radio noise and the solar electron packet. Electron intensities at E 45 keV and the isotropic intensities of lower-energy solar electrons are relatively uncorrelated with the measurements of type III radio noise at these low frequencies. The implications of these observations relative to those at higher frequencies, and heliocentric radial distances 50R , include apparent deceleration of the exciting electron beam with increasing heliocentric radial distance.Research supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under contracts NAS5-11039 and NAS5-11074 and grant NGL16-001-002 and by the Office of Naval Research under contract N000-14-68-A-0196-0003.  相似文献

Prentice (1978a) in his modern Laplacian theory of the origin of the solar system has established the scenario of the formation of the solar system on the basis of the usual laws of conservation of mass and angular momentum and the concept of supersonic turbulent convection that he has developed. In this, he finds the ratio of the orbital radii of successively disposed gaseous rings to be a constant - 1.69. This serves to provide a physical understanding of the Titius-Bode law of planetary distances. In an attempt to understand the law in an alternative way, Rawal (1984) starts with the concept of Roche limit. He assumes that during the collapse of the solar nebula, the halts at various radii are brought about by the supersonic turbulent convection developed by Prentice and arrives at the relation: R p= Rap, where R pare the radii of the solar nebula at various halts during the collapse, R the radius of the present Sun and a = 1.442. a is referred here as the Roche constant. In this context, it is shown here that Kepler's third law of planetary system assumes the form: T p = T 0(a3/2)p, where T p are the orbital periods at the radii R p, T 0 - 0.1216d - 3 h, and a the Roche constant. We are inclined to interpret T 0' to be the rotation period of the Sun at the time of its formation when it attained the present radius. It is also shown that the oribital periods T pcorresponding to the radii R psubmit themselves to the Laplace's resonance relation.  相似文献

A model is presented for the generation and evolution of bump-in-tail driven Langmuir waves in the solar wind during type III emission, which removes a number of apparent inconsistencies between theory and observations. It is argued that there must be localized enhancements of f b /v by a factor of 102 over the measured average values. Growth rates and energy densities of Langmuir waves are, therefore, considerably enhanced, permitting growth to overcome linear scattering losses, and also allowing nonlinear decay into ion-acoustic waves, in line with observations. Estimates are made of the probability distribution p(E), of wave field strengths E, based on linear and nonlinear wave-packet evolution, yielding p(E) E –a, 3. This helps explain why very high values of E are rarely found in the measured spiky wave turbulence.  相似文献

Some properties of solar radio bursts observed at the Earth are mainly due to propagation effects in the corona. A radio echo of short-time narrow-band bursts is observed by a decameter radioheliograph on the basis of UTR-2 antenna. Propagation effects are manifested in the marked regular change of the burst intensity-time profile at 25 MHz during a half-rotation of the Sun. A displacement of limb diffuse bursts deep into the solar atmosphere of 1.5 - 2R has been also found during the burst lifetime.  相似文献

We show that within distances from the Sun's surface less than the height of a streamer helmet, each of two neighboring rays of the streamer belt, as they approach the solar surface, bends around the helmet on either side of it. Also, a minimum angular diameter of the rays of d2°–3° remains virtually constant within R=1.2–6.0 R . A density inhomogeneity (`blob') can be produced above the helmet top visible to at least R6 R . In this case the initial velocity of the `blob' increases with solar distance from where it is generated to something like the velocity of the bulk solar wind with which the `blob' is carried away.  相似文献

A study of the properties of the cosmic radiation of energy - 10 MeV generated by solar flares is reported. Data from four Pioneer spacecraft in interplanetary orbits, and separated by 180° in heliocentric longitude are employed. Attention is restricted to the properties evident at times in excess of 1 day after the occurrence of the parent flare. The anisotropic character of the radiation; the gradients in heliocentric longitude; the decay time constants; and the energy spectra of the radiation are all studied in detail. It is found that the equilibrium anisotropy assumes a direction - 45° E of the satellite-Sun line at very late times. It is suggested that the anisotropy at such times is parallel to E × B. This observation confirms that convection is the determining process in the escape of the solar cosmic rays from the solar system. It indicates that a positive radial gradient of solar cosmic radiation density has builtup at orbit of Earth some 4 days after a flare. This results in an effective convective velocity of approximately 1/2 the solar wind velocity. Direct measurements indicate the presence of strong gradients in heliocentric longitude even at very late times ( 4 days). These gradients are essentially invariant with respect to time, e-folding angles of n - 30° have been observed at - 10 MeV. The presence of these gradients has a major effect on the temporal variation of the cosmic ray flux during the decay phase of the flare effect. Thus, the observed decay time constant is either increased or decreased relative to the convective value depending on the position of the observer relative to the centroid of the cosmic ray population injected by the flare. The effect of the gradient becomes more pronounced at lower energies, and may even exceed the convective removal rate. The observed decay time constant, the characteristics of the anisotropy, and the gradient in longitude are shown to be inter-related as demanded by theory. It is shown that the exponent of the cosmic ray spectrum is dependent on the location of the observer relative to the centroid of the cosmic ray population injected by the parent flare. At a given point in the frame of reference of the cosmic ray population, the spectral exponent is invariant with time. Now at CSIRO, G.P.O. The velocity gradients of the contrastreaming electron beams observed in the Earth's magnetosphere can excite three types of ordinary mode instabilities, namely (i) B-resonance electron instability, (ii) ion cyclotron instability, and (iii) unmagnetized ion instability. The B-resonance electron instability occurs at small values of the shear parameter 10–4<S<10–3, whereS = [(1/e){dU o(x)}/(dx)] (U 0(x) and e being the streaming velocity of the electron beams and the electron cyclotron frequency, respectively). Near the equatorial plane of the bouncing electron beams region, this instability can generate electromagnetic waves having frequenciesf(0.045–0.2) Hz and wavelentghs (0.5–10)km, and the wave magnetic field is polarised in a radial direction. This instability can also occur in the plasma sheet region during the earthwards and tailwards plasma flows events and can generate waves, with wave magnetic field polarised along north-south direction, in the frequency rangef(0.007–0.02) Hz with (10–100)km nearR=–35R E . For 10–3<S<10–2, the ion cyclotron instability is excited and it can generate waves up to 5th harmonic or so of ion cyclotron frequency. ForS>10–2, the unmagnetized ion instability is excited which can generate electromagnetic waves having frequences from 5 to 50 Hz and typical wavelengths (0.5–6)km. The growth rates of all the three velocity shear driven instabilities are reduced in the presence of cold background plasma. The turbulence generated by these instabilities may give rise to enhanced effective electron-electron and electron-ion collisions and broaden the bouncing electron beams.  相似文献

From theH filtergram observations obtained at Ganyu station, identification and statistic works made for Ellerman bombs, it is found that they often occur in the superpenumbra area of a mature sunspot. We suggest a plasmoid model to account for the basic properties of a typical bomb: lifetime 11 min, diameter 5 × 107 cm, accompanying jet velocity 40 km/s, total energy 1027 erg,Te 104 K. First, a numerical simulation is made to prove that plasmoids can be lifted from the solar convective zone by magnetic buoyancy. Between the plasmoid and its surroundings a strong current sheet builds up in which a peculiar MHD (with plasma ponderamotive force) - resistive instability takes place. After the magnetic reconnection has begun, a local explosive instability ensues whose growth rate is so high that it allows the exhaustion of the high temperature particles from the sheet in a short period. In this way, the temperature of a bomb may be kept unchanged or only rise slightly.  相似文献

Previous global models of coronal magnetic fields have used a geometrical construction based on a spherical source surface because of requirements for computational speed. As a result they have had difficulty accounting for (a) the tendency of full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models to predict non-radial plasma flow out to r 10r and (b) the appreciable magnitude, 3, of B r , (the radial component of B) consistently observed at r 1 AU. We present a new modelling technique based on a non-spherical source surface, which is taken to be an isogauss of the underlying potential field generated by currents in or below the photosphere. This modification of the source surface significantly improves the agreement between the geometrical construction and the MHD solution while retaining most of the computational ease provided by a spherical source surface. A detailed comparison between the present source-surface model and the MHD solution is made for the internal dipole case. The resulting B field agrees well in magnitude and direction with the coronal B field derived from the full MHD equations. It shows evidence of the slightly equatorward meridional plasma flow that is characteristic of the MHD solution. Moreover, the B field obtained by using our non-spherical source surface agrees well with that observed by spacecraft in the vicinity of the Earth's orbit. Applied to a solar dipole field with a moment of 1 G-r 3 , the present model predicts that B r at r 1 AU lies in the range of 1–2 and is remarkably insensitive to heliomagnetic latitude. Our method should be applicable also to more general (i.e., more realistic) configurations of the solar magnetic field. Isogauss surfaces for two representative solar rotations, as calculated from expansions of observed photospheric magnetic-field data, are found to show large and significant deviations from sphericity.  相似文献

We present Very Large Array observations at wavelengths of 2, 3.5, 6, and 20 cm, of angular broadening of radio sources due to the solar wind in the region 2–16 solar radii. Angular broadening is anisotropic with axial ratios in the range 2–16. Larger axial ratios are observed preferentially at smaller solar distances. Assuming that anisotropy is due to scattering blobs elongated along magnetic field lines, the distribution of position angles of the elliptically broadened images indicates that the field lines are non-radial even at the largest heliocentric distances observed here. At 5R , the major axis scattering angle is 0.7 at =6 cm and it varies with heliocentric distance asR –1.6. The level of turbulence, characterized by the wave structure function at a scale of 10 km along the major axis, normalized to =20 cm, has a value 20±7 at 5R and varies with heliocentric distance asR –3. Comprison with earlier results suggest that the level of turbulence is higher during solar maximum. Assuming a power-law spectrum of electron density fluctuations, the fitted spectral exponents have values in the range 2.8–3.4 for scales sizes between 2–35 km. The data suggests temporal fluctuations (of up to 10%) in the spectral exponent on a time scale of a few tens of minutes. The observed structure functions at different solar distances do not show any evidence for an inner scale; the upper limits are 1 km at 2R and 4 km at 13R . These upper limits are in conflict with earlier determinations and may suggest a reduced inner scale during solar maximum.  相似文献
