The spiral waves in a model galaxy consisting of differentially rotating and non-rotating subsystems are considered on the basis of participating phenomena. The subsystems involved represent the Populations I and II of normal spirals, respectively. The spiral waves in such a systems are unstable in the Landau sense. Due to this instability they grow up to attain finite amplitude. This growth is stopped by a non-linear effect (the quasilinear effect), the steady state with waves of finite amplitude being established. The hypothesis is proposed that these waves should be identified with the spiral structure of the galaxies.  相似文献

The stability of galactic spiral shocks is considered. A steady-state shock should be checked to see (i) if it is evolutionary; (ii) if its front is stable against bending and torsion; and (iii) if the gas flow far from the front is stable. In the present paper the evolutionary criterion is obtained, which implies that conditions in galaxies may lead to the evolutionary spiral shocks as well as to the nonevolutionary ones. In the latter case a galactic shock cannot persist — it instantly decays, emitting spontaneously spiral waves. This leads to a plausible stratification of the spiral arms, to the formation of the secondary arms, ‘spurs’ and other secondary features. The steady-state gas flow with a galactic shock (Roberts, 1969) turns out to be unstable far from the shock front, the increment being proportional to the velocity gradient. For the spiral shock calculated by Roberts (1969) the instability develops ahead of the shock front with the same growth-time of about 3×107 years for all disturbance scales. This may provide a mechanism to generate turbulence of interstellar gas and to form the patchy structure of spiral arms which are known to include the structural units (gas clouds) on all possible scales.  相似文献

Most rapidly and differentially rotating disk galaxies, in which the sound speed (thermal velocity dispersion) is smaller than the orbital velocity, display graceful spiral patterns. Yet, over almost 240 yr after their discovery in M51 by Charles Messier, we still do not fully understand how they originate. In this first paper of a series, the dynamical behavior of a rotating galactic disk is examined numerically by a high-order Godunov hydrodynamic code. The code is implemented to simulate a two-dimensional flow driven by an internal Jeans gravitational instability in a nonresonant wave–“fluid” interaction in an infinitesimally thin disk composed of stars or gas clouds. A goal of this work is to explore the local and linear regimes of density wave formation, employed by Lin, Shu, Yuan and many others in connection with the problem of spiral pattern of rotationally supported galaxies, by means of computer-generated models and to compare those numerical results with the generalized fluid-dynamical wave theory. The focus is on a statistical analysis of time-evolution of density wave structures seen in the simulations. The leading role of collective processes in the formation of both the circular and spiral density waves (“heavy sound”) is emphasized. The main new result is that the disk evolution in the initial, quasilinear stage of the instability in our global simulations is fairly well described using the local approximation of the generalized wave theory. Certain applications of the simulation to actual gas-rich spiral galaxies are also explored.  相似文献

We use a four-layer model in a stability analysis of the ME type spiral sector transition in the interplanetary magnetic field. Our results show that (1) three kinds of large-scale waves may be excited in the region and for all three, there exists a low-frequency cut-off. (2) In all three, the rate of growth of instability increases with k; in Model A only, the rate of growth has a maximum and a minimum. (3) As the angle between k and the solar wind velocity vector Vq increases, the cut-off frequency increases, and the excitation of waves gets more and more difficult, until it becomes impossible when k is perpendicular to Vq. (4) when the angle between k and Vq is 75°, waves with a wavelength of 5 × 104 km and a phase velocity of 340 km/s may be excited; this agrees with the observations by Voyager 1 at the Earth's magnetopause. Hence we deduce that waves in the spiral sector transition region may be a source that triggers off the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of the magnetopause.  相似文献

We study the nature of non-axisymmetric dynamical instabilities in differentially rotating stars with both linear eigenmode analysis and hydrodynamic simulations in Newtonian gravity. We especially investigate the following three types of instability; the one-armed spiral instability, the low   T /| W |  bar instability, and the high   T /| W |  bar instability, where T is the rotational kinetic energy and W is the gravitational potential energy. The nature of the dynamical instabilities is clarified by using a canonical angular momentum as a diagnostic. We find that the one-armed spiral and the low   T /| W |  bar instabilities occur around the corotation radius, and they grow through the inflow of canonical angular momentum around the corotation radius. The result is a clear contrast to that of a classical dynamical bar instability in high   T /| W |  . We also discuss the feature of gravitational waves generated from these three types of instability.  相似文献

Abstract— A widely held view of nebular evolution is that during the ~0.5 Ma while interstellar material was collapsing onto the disk, the latter grew in mass to the point of gravitational instability. It responded to this by losing axial symmetry, growing spiral arms that had the capacity to tidally redistribute disk mass (inward) and angular momentum (outward) and prevent further increase in the disk/protosun mass ratio. The spiral arms (density waves) rotated differently than the substance of the nebula, and in some parts of the disk, nebular material may have encountered the arms at supersonic velocities. The disk gas, and solid particles entrained in it, would have been heated to some degree when they passed through shock fronts at the leading edges of the spiral arms. The present paper proposes this was the energetic nebular setting or environment that has long been sought, in which the material now in the planets and chondritic meteorites was thermally processed.  相似文献

The spiral pattern of the Galaxy, identified by analyzing the kinematics of young stars within 3 kpc of the Sun, is Fourier decomposed into spiral harmonics. The spiral pattern of the Galaxy is shown to be representable as a superposition of trailing and leading waves with interarm distances of λ = 1.8 ± 0.4 and 4 ± 2 kpc, respectively. Shock waves are probably present only in the portions of the trailing spiral pattern where it crosses the crest of the leading wave. The small interarm distance of the trailing spiral wave (λ = 1.8 kpc) can be explained by its evolution—by the decrease in the interarmd istance as the wave is displaced toward the inner Lindblad resonance. The Carina arm may be part of this resonance ring.  相似文献

The paper models the suprathermal plasma as the concatenation of two different gravitating fluids each having its own separate density and pressure. One of the fluids has isotropic pressure while the other has an anisotropic pressure. The system is subjected to a uniform magnetic field which is frozen with the fluids. The gravitational instability of the model for low frequency plane waves has been investigated in a linear framework for plasma parameters relevant to the spiral arms of the galaxy and the cosmic gas clouds. The analysis shows that the wavelength of the instability is strongly dependent upon the anisotropy of the non-thermal plasma.  相似文献

N-body simulations performed by us suggest a mechanism for the generation of spiral waves in galaxies in which a mutual quasi-ellipsoidal rotating equilibrium configuration increasing slowly by accretion from the surrounding disk influences the density distribution of stars in the disk such as to give rise to a trailing spiral density wave. Interaction of the spiral wave with the viscous interstellar gas and mutual gravitation between the stars in the disk are believed to influence the form of the spiral. Nevertheless the basic assumption of conventional density wave theory according to which the mutual interaction of stars in the disk is essential for the formation of spirals may not be true.  相似文献

Lopsidedness is common in spiral galaxies. Often, there is no obvious external cause, such as an interaction with a nearby galaxy, for such features. Alternatively, the lopsidedness may have an internal cause, such as a dynamical instability. In order to explore this idea, we have developed a computer code that searches for self-consistent perturbations in razor-thin disc galaxies and performed a thorough mode-analysis of a suite of dynamical models for disc galaxies embedded in an inert dark matter halo with varying amounts of rotation and radial anisotropy.
Models with two equal-mass counter-rotating discs and fully rotating models both show growing lopsided modes. For the counter-rotating models, this is the well-known counter-rotating instability, becoming weaker as the net rotation increases. The m = 1 mode of the maximally rotating models, on the other hand, becomes stronger with increasing net rotation. This rotating m = 1 mode is reminiscent of the eccentricity instability in near-Keplerian discs.
To unravel the physical origin of these two different m = 1 instabilities, we studied the individual stellar orbits in the perturbed potential and found that the presence of the perturbation gives rise to a very rich orbital behaviour. In the linear regime, both instabilities are supported by aligned loop orbits. In the non-linear regime, other orbit families exist that can help support the modes. In terms of density waves, the counter-rotating m = 1 mode is due to a purely growing Jeans-type instability. The rotating m = 1 mode, on the other hand, grows as a result of the swing amplifier working inside the resonance cavity that extends from the disc centre out to the radius where non-rotating waves are stabilized by the model's outwardly rising Q profile.  相似文献

A general expression for the tensor of the dielectrical susceptibility in an anisotropic plasma with particle drifts is derived, and the dispersion equation is found for waves propagating in arbitrary direction with respect to the mean magnetic field. The dispersion equation is solved for the case of electromagnetic ion‐cyclotron waves. It is found that in the plasma of the auroral magnetosphere strong plasma instability may occur so that the value of the growth rate of the waves is of the order of the wave frequency. Besides, the plasma instability is excited at less values of the wave number if the magnetospheric altitude becomes larger.  相似文献

A theory for the oxygen abundance radial distribution formation in the galactic disc of a spiral galaxy is developed. We take into account that the main sources of oxygen are Type II supernovae (SN II), the progenitors of which are massive short-lived stars strongly concentrated in the spiral arms. Hence oxygen is the most sensitive indicator of spiral arms' influence on galactic disc enrichment by heavy elements. Various models for the spiral density waves were analysed. We predict that the imprints in the oxygen radial distribution will enable us to distinguish between different models for spiral patterns. Among other parameters, the corotation radius happens to be one of the most important.  相似文献

The limitations imposed by the shear instability on the formation of gigantic molecular clouds in the central regions of spiral galaxies are examined. The criteria obtained here are illustrated using the example of six galaxies for which the detailed rotation curves are known. The different mechanisms for formation of molecular clouds which apply in the central and edge regions of disk galaxies are evaluated.  相似文献

Propagation of nonlinear dust-acoustic waves in a magnetized collisionless plasma having positively, negatively charged dust grains and nonextensive distributed electrons and ions has been investigated. A reductive perturbation method is used to obtain a nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation describing the model. The dynamics of the modulational instability gives rise to the formation of rogue waves that is described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The dependence of rogue waves profiles on positive and negative charged dust cyclotron frequencies, nonextensive parameters of electrons and ions is investigated numerically. The result of the present investigation may be applicable to some plasma environments, such as cometary tails and upper mesosphere.  相似文献

A body moving in an ionized atmosphere acquires an electric charge through the processes of accretion of charged particles and emission of electrons by high energy photons. The moving charged body may then interact with the charged particles of the atmosphere and any pervading magnetic field to excite plasma waves. Of particular interest is the situation in which the body collects an ionized cloud in front of it. The motion of this ionized cloud in the atmosphere induces an electrostatic instability and causes a column of ionized gas to move ahead of the body. The electrostatic instability is conducive to the excitation of electrostatic oscillations which if already present are further enhanced. A magnetic field along the direction of motion assists in the formation of the ionized cloud. If the pervading magnetic field is of suitable weak strength, it may excite extraordinary electromagnetic waves. A pervading transverse magnetic field of suitable strength may cause the excitation of magnetohydrodynamic waves.  相似文献

The Ulysses Unified Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (URAP) has observed Langmuir, ion-acoustic and associated solar type III radio emissions in the interplanetary medium. Bursts of 50–300 Hz (in the spacecraft frame) electric field signals, corresponding to long-wavelength ion-acoustic waves are often observed coincident in time with the most intense Langmuir wave spikes, providing evidence for the electrostatic decay instability. Langmuir waves often occur as envelope solitons, suggesting that strong turbulence processes, such as modulational instability and soliton formation, often coexist with weak turbulence processes, such as electrostatic decay, in a few type III burst source regions.  相似文献

We study the process of occurrence of “quasi-mode” decay instability of kinetic Alfven waves (KAW) in the chromosphere of a solar active region before a flare, namely, in plasma of magnetic loops near their footpoints. The decay of a primary KAW into a kinetic ion-acoustic wave and a secondary KAW was considered as a specific type of three-wave interaction. Necessary conditions for the KAW decay instability occurrence were found for two semiempirical models of the solar atmosphere with the use of a modified expression for the growth rate of instability in the case of nonlinear interaction of low-frequency waves with an abnormally low excitation threshold. It was shown that the main criteria for the development of this instability significantly depend on the amplitude of external magnetic field in the region under study as well as on a model of the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the Kelvin-Helmholtz magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability near the low-latitude boundary layer. It is argued that the instability may be responsible both for viscous interaction of solar wind with the magnetosphere and for generation of surface waves over the range of geomagnetic pulsation frequencies. The influence of the inclination angle of the IMF vector with respect to the Earth-Sun line upon the instability growth-rate value is studied numerically. On the basis of the results the morning maximum of surface waves and of geomagnetic pulsations as well as the dependence of the latter on IMF orientation are discussed.  相似文献

The linear theory and N-body simulations are used to present a new, alternative model of the galaxy A0035-324 (the “Cartwheel”), which is the most striking example of the relatively small class of ring galaxies. The model is based on the gravitational Jeans-type instability of both axisymmetric (radial) and nonaxisymmetric (spiral) small-amplitude gravity perturbations (e.g., those produced by spontaneous disturbances) of a dynamically cold subsystem (identified as the gaseous component) of an isolated disk galaxy. The simplified model of a galaxy is used in which stars (and a dark matter, if it exists at all) do not participate in the disk collective oscillations and just form a background charge. In the theory presented here, a case for both purely radial solutions and purely spiral solutions to the equations of motion of an infinitesimally thin gaseous disk is made, which is associated with both a radial density wave and a dominant spiral density wave which propagate outwards creating a rough ring and a number of spiral arms. Through three-dimensional numerical simulation of a collisionless set of many particles, I associate these gravitationally unstable axisymmetric waves and nonaxisymmetric waves with growing clumps of matter which take on the appearance of a ring and spokes of mass blobs.  相似文献

The anisotropic instability of Alfven waves in the solar atmosphere is considered. This mechanism is shown to lead to the generation of not only Alfven but also kinetic Alfven waves, which is very important in investigating the heating and acceleration of particles in the chromospheric and coronal plasma. A criterion for the development of instability has been found. The conditions under which this instability can arise and the atmospheric regions in which its development is most probable are analyzed. It is shown that this generation mechanism of kinetic Alfven waves is fairly efficient and can play a significant role in some processes in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献
