In a magnetized inhomogeneous dusty plasma drift dissipative instability may play an important role. We have examined the dependence of frequencies and growth rates on dust parameters. The marginal instability for such a dusty plasma seems to show some interesting results. The relevance of the investigation is discussed to understand the wave phenomena in planets and cometary environments.  相似文献

We implement a complex-plane strategy and a multiple partition technique to the computation of polytropic models distorted by very strong and very rapid differential rotation. We also verify with our numerical results a heuristic relation between stability and virial theorem.  相似文献

Conditions for the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) waves on the magnetopause have been known for more than 15 years; more recently, spacecraft observations have stimulated further examination of the properties of K-H waves. For amagnetopause with no boundary layer, two different modes of surface waves have been identified and their properties have been investigated for various assumed orientations of magnetic field and flow velocity vectors. The power radiated into the magnetosphere from the velocity shear at the boundary has been estimated. Other calculations have focused on the consequences of finite thickness boundary layers, both uniform and non-uniform. The boundary layer is found to modify the wave modes present at the magnetopause and to yield a criterion for the wavelength of the fastest growing surface waves. The paper concludes by questioning the extent to which the inferences from boundary layer models are model dependent and identifies areas where further work is needed or anticipated.  相似文献

The propagation of dust ion acoustic waves is studied in plasmas composed of superthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived using the reductive perturbation technique and the modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analyzed. Parametric investigations indicate that the presence of superthermal distributed electrons significantly modify the modulational instability and its growth rate. The effect of particle relative density on the wave characters is also investigated.  相似文献

The modified ion-acoustic envelope solitons and their modulational instability in a multi-component unmagnetized plasma (consisting of negatively charged immobile dusts, inertial ions and superthermal electrons of two distinct temperatures) are theoretically investigated. A multiple scale (in space and time) perturbation technique is used to derive the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (which describes the evolution of a slowly varying wave envelope with space and time). It is observed that the plasma system under consideration supports two types (bright and dark) envelope solitons. It is also found that the dark (bright) envelope solitons are modulationally stable (unstable). The variation of the growth rate of the unstable bright envelope solitons with various plasma parameters (e.g. wave number, temperature of superthermal electrons, etc.) are found to be significant. The modulational instability criterions of the modified ion-acoustic envelope solitons are also seen to be influenced due to the variation of the intrinsic plasma parameters. The implications of the results of this theoretical investigations in some space plasma systems (viz. Saturn’s magnetosphere) are briefly mentioned.  相似文献

The properties of ion-acoustic waves in steady-state, unmagnetized, dusty plasmas are analyzed using fluid equations. Two damping mechanisms are investigated. The “Tromsø damping” has been discussed in detail by researchers in Tromsø (Havnes et al., Phys. Scr.45, 491, 1992; Melandsø et al., J. geophys. Res.98, 13315, 1993) for dust-acoustic waves, and is related to the fact that a finite phase shift generally exists between the oscillation of the wave potential and the oscillation of the dust grains charge in the presence of the wave. The “creation damping” is due to the continuous injection of fresh ions into the plasma, to replace those which are lost to the dust grains. These fresh ions, produced by ionization of a neutral gas, do not share initially in the wave motion of the pre-existing ions, and thus lower the average momentum of the ion population.  相似文献

By taking into account the temporal as well as the spatial effects, a weakly nonlinear theory of the propagation of wave packets in the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability problem in the presence of uniform magnetic fields, acting along the surface of separation of two moving superposed fluids, is presented. With the use of the method of multiple scaling, the evolution of the amplitude of the two-dimensional wave packets, which is governed by a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, is derived. The various stability criteria arising out of this equation are examined. The nonlinear cut-off wavenumber, which separates the region of stability from that of instability, is determined.  相似文献

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on the magnetopause has frequently been invoked as a mechanism for driving geomagnetic pulsations in the Pc3–Pc5 range, as well as to explain the occurrence of surface waves on the magnetopause observed by satellites. Most theories of the instability represent the magnetopause by a sharp boundary with velocity shear. In this paper a linear theory is developed which takes into account the finite thickness of the low-latitude boundary layer on the magnetopause. The theory is in a form suitable for numerical computation and can take into account the effect of gradients in the plasma pressure, magnetic field magnitude and direction, and density. Computations show that the instability is suppressed at wavelengths short compared with the scale width of the boundary. There is thus a wavelength for which the growth rate is maximum. Extensive computations have been carried out and they show that growth can take place for a very wide range of conditions. The computations confirm earlier results snowing that maximum growth occurs for a wave vector which is perpendicular to the magnetic field. For typical solar wind conditions the theory predicts wavelengths on the magnetopause of the order of 10 times the thickness of the low-latitude boundary layer and periods in the Pc3–Pc5 range. The possible non-linear development of the instability is discussed qualitatively. The predicted results are consistent with satellite observations of pulsations.  相似文献

Nonlinear analysis of electrostatic drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is performed. It is shown that the analysis leads to the propagation of the weakly nonlinear dispersive waves and the nonlinear behaviour is governed by the nonlinear Burger's equation.  相似文献

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is believed to be an important means for the transfer of energy, plasma, and momentum from the solar wind into planetary magnetospheres, with in situ measurements reported from Earth, Saturn, and Venus. During the first MESSENGER flyby of Mercury, three periodic rotations were observed in the magnetic field data possibly related to a Kelvin-Helmholtz wave on the dusk side magnetopause. We present an analysis of the event, along with comparisons to previous Kelvin-Helmholtz observations and an investigation of what influence finite ion gyro radius effects, believed to be of importance in the Hermean magnetosphere, may have on the instability. The wave signature does not correspond to that of typical Kelvin-Helmholtz events, and the magnetopause direction does not show any signs of major deviation from the unperturbed case. There is thus no indication of any high amplitude surface waves. On the other hand, the wave period corresponds to that expected for a Kelvin-Helmholtz wave, and as the dusk side is shown to be more stable than the dawn side, we judge the observed waves not to be fully developed Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, but they may be an initial perturbation that could cause Kelvin-Helmholtz waves further down the tail.  相似文献

The problem of nonlinear localized dust acoustic (DA) is addressed in a plasma comprising positive ions, negative ions, and mobile negatively charged dust grains. We first consider the case when the grain charge remains constant and discuss later the case when the charge variations are self-consistently included. It is found that a relative increase of the positive ion density favors the propagation of the DA solitary waves, in the sense that the domain of their admissible Mach numbers enlarges. Furthermore, electronegativity makes the dust acoustic solitary structure more spiky. When the dust grain charge Q d is allowed to fluctuate, the latter is expressed in terms of the Lambert function and we take advantage of this transcendental function to investigate the variable charge DA solitary wave. Q d adopts a localized profile and becomes more negative as the number of charges Z (−) of the negative ion increases. The dust grains are found to be highly localized. This localization (accumulation) caused by a balance of the electrostatic forces acting on the dust grains becomes more effective for lower values of Z (−). An increase of Z (−) may lead to a local depletion of the negative ions from the region of the soliton’s localization. The results are useful to understand the salient features of localization of large amplitude dust acoustic waves in cosmic plasmas such as the ionospheric D-region and the mesosphere.  相似文献

Interaction of dust acoustic solitary waves in plasmas consisting of medium disorders is investigated. Disorders and inhomogeneities of the medium are added to the equation of motion as perturbative terms through the medium parameters. The effects of these perturbations on the behaviour of solitary waves are studied with numerical simulations and the results are compared with theoretical predictions in a uniform media.  相似文献

Nonlinear analysis for Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of an incompressible, inviscid, rotating fluid with infinite conductivity in the presence of gravity and surface tension has been discussed. The unperturbed magnetic field on two sides of the interface is taken to be uniform. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the time variation of amplitude of small perturbations with wave number around the neutral stability is derived. It is found that stability of a magnetised K-H rotating configuration depends on the density ratio, surface tension, and discontinuity of velocity and magnetic field. The effect of an aligned magnetic field and rotation on the non-linear instability of a rotating conducting plasma has been discussed in certain important limiting cases.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamical role of a radiation field on the growth rate of the unstable Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) perturbations. As a first step toward this purpose, the analyze is done in a general way, irrespective of applying the model to a specific astronomical system. The transition zone between the two layers of the fluid is ignored. Then, we perform a linear analysis and by imposing suitable boundary conditions and considering a radiation field, we obtain appropriate dispersion relation. Unstable modes are studied by solving the dispersion equation numerically, and then growth rates of them are obtained. By analyzing our dispersion relation, we show that for a wide range of the input parameters, the radiation field has a destabilizing effect on KH instability. In eruptions of the galaxies or supermassive stars, the radiation field is dynamically important and because of the enhanced KH growth rates in the presence of the radiation; these eruptions can inject more momentum and energy into their environment and excite more turbulent motions.  相似文献

Progress in understanding the nonlinear features of dust-acoustic waves (DAWs) which accompany a collisional strongly and weakly coupled unmagnetized dusty plasma with Boltzmann distributed electrons, ions and negatively charged dust grains is presented. By using a hydrodynamic model, the Korteweg–de Vries-Burgers (KdV-Burgers) equation is derived. The existence regions of the solitary pulses are defined precisely. Furthermore, numerical calculations reveal that, due to collisions, the DAWs damp waves and the damping rate of the waves depends mainly on the collision frequency. The collisions are found to significantly change the basic properties of the DAWs. The effects of electron-to-ion concentration ratio, and ion-to-electron temperature ratio have important roles in the behavior of the DAWs. The results may have relevance in space and laboratory dusty plasmas.  相似文献

If the solar dynamo operates at the bottom of the convection zone, then the magnetic flux created there has to rise to the surface. When the convection zone is regarded as passive, the rising flux is deflected by the Coriolis force to emerge at rather high latitudes, poleward of typical sunspot zones (Choudhuri and Gilman, 1987; Choudhuri, 1989). Choudhuri and D'Silva (1990) included the effects of convective turbulence on the rising flux through (a) giant cell drag and (b) momentum exchange by small-scale turbulence. The momentum exchange mechanism could enable flux tubes of radii not more than a few hundred km to emerge radially at low latitudes, but the giant cell drag mechanism required unrealistically small flux tube radii (a few meters for a reasonable giant cell upflow) to counteract the Coriolis force. We now include the additional effect of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a symmetrical flux ring caused by the azimuthal flow induced during its rise. The azimuthal flow crosses the threshold for the instability only if there is a giant cell upflow to drag the flux tubes appreciably. In the absence of such a drag, as in the case of a passive convection zone or in the case of momentum exchange by small-scale turbulence, the azimuthal velocity never becomes large enough to cause the instability, leaving the results of the previous calculations unaltered. The giant cell drag, aided by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, however, becomes now a viable mechanism for curbing the Coriolis force - 104 G flux tubes with radii of a few hundred km being dragged radially by upflows of 70 m s-1.  相似文献
