We investigate the importance of wide-band coupling of normal modes due to inner core anisotropy. We compare four different seismic models of inner core anisotropy, which were obtained by others using the splitting of Earth's normal modes. These models have been developed using a self-coupling (SC) approximation, which assumes that coupling between nearby modes through anisotropic inner core structure is negligible. We test the SC approximation by comparing the frequencies and quality factors of 90 inner core sensitive modes, computed for these models using either the SC approximation or full-coupling (FC) among large groups of modes. We find significant shifts in the quality factors and frequencies for some modes. Groups of modes which significantly couple together are constructed for six target modes. These groups are model dependent and in some cases contain large numbers of modes. Synthetic seismograms are calculated to show that the difference between SC and FC is observable on the scale of seismograms and of the same order of magnitude as the difference between synthetic and observed seismograms. Thus, future models of inner core anisotropy should take cross-coupling between large groups of modes into account.  相似文献

A six-parameter statistical model of the non-dipole geomagnetic field is fitted to 2597 harmonic coefficients determined by Cain, Holter & Sandee (1990) from MAGSAT data. The model includes sources in the core, sources in the crust, and instrument errors. External fields are included with instrument errors. The core and instrument statistics are invariant under rotation about the centre of the Earth, and one of the six parameters describes the deviation of the crustal statistics from rotational invariance. The model treats the harmonic coefficients as independent random samples drawn from a Gaussian distribution. The statistical model of the core field has a correlation length of about 500 km at the core-mantle boundary, too long to be attributed to a white noise source just below the boundary layers at the top of the core. The estimate of instrument errors obtained from the statistical model is in good agreement with an independent estimate based on tests of the instruments (Langel, Ousley & Berbert 1982).  相似文献

Summary. Starting with the first-order formulation of quasi-degenerate splitting theory for the normal modes of a laterally heterogeneous earth, we have obtained an asymptotic expression for the coupling terms corresponding to neighbouring multiplets along the same dispersion branch as the mode considered, valid to order 1/ℓ, where ℓ is the angular order of this mode (ℓ≥ 1).
We show that, to order zero, these coupling terms introduce a small shift in epicentral distance into the expression for the long period seismogram obtained by normal mode summation. This shift depends on the difference between the great circle and the minor arc averages of the local frequency. the coupling terms thus permit us to reconcile results obtained by normal-mode summation and by a propagating wave approach, as far as the dependence on structure of the phase of surface waves is concerned.
To order 1/ℓ, the coupling terms result in a perturbation in the amplitude of the mode considered, which depends on spatial derivatives of the local frequency and thus on the structure in the vicinity of the source station great circle path. We show that this term is equivalent to that which is found using ray perturbation methods for propagating surface waves. We compare and discuss the assumptions underlying both approaches and illustrate, by an example, the potential of the asymptotic normal-mode formulation for improved modelling of lateral heterogeneity in the earth.  相似文献

Local events which occurred in the Timanfaya volcanic field are analysed and their spectral contents are interpreted as being due to the effect of a finely layered medium with large impedance contrast, the presence of which is well known from well-logging data. By considering the layered medium as a filter, its spectral response (amplitude and phase) is computed from different randomly generated values of its parameters (total thickness, mean thickness of the individual layers and impedance contrast), showing that this stratigraphic filter acts as a low-pass filter. This effect can be correctly modelled by means of an exponential correlation function. However, in some cases resonant peaks appear in the spectrum superimposed on the low-pass filter effect, which can only be attributed to resonant scattering. An analysis of the phase and group delay associated with the amplitudes is made and strongly suggests that it is necessary to incorporate the theory of resonant scattering for the retrieval of medium properties. From the point of view of the amplitudes, the superposition of both effects, low-pass filter and resonant peaks, allows us to reproduce the gross features that are usually attributed to source effects. The need for a careful analysis of the local site response previous to any interpretation of the spectral features in terms of source characteristics is thus emphasized.  相似文献

There are three types of surfaces which are used for studying wave propagation in anisotropic media: normal surfaces, slowness surfaces and wave surfaces. Normal surfaces and slowness surfaces have been researched in detail. Wave surfaces are the most complicated and comparatively poorly known compared with the other two. Areas of complicated geometrical structure of the wave surfaces are located in the vicinity of conical acoustic axes. There is an elliptical hole on the quick shear wave surface and complicated folds and cusps on the slow shear wave surface. Decomposition of the slow shear wave surface into smooth sheets is used for the study of its geometrical structure. Complexity of shear wave surfaces can be expressed by the number of waves corresponding to a fixed ray. An original approach to the calculation of wave normals depending on ray direction is presented.  相似文献

The particle motion of regional arrivals is frequently treated in automatic phase-recognition schemes as that appropriate to simple P or S waves incident on an elastic, laterally homogeneous half-space. This model implies that the motion in ' P -type' phases can be described in terms of a single, generalized signal process and ' S -type' phases in terms of two independent processes ( SV and SH ) and thus, all regional arrivals could be fully characterized by three components of motion. In this paper, we present anlyses of the particle-motion patterns of various regional arrivals recorded at the ARCESS array from closely spaced events in the Kola Peninsula. We have found that only Pn -particle motion, described in terms of two independent signal processes, can be reliably characterized by three-component recordings. On the other hand, the various regional arrivals following Pn , such as Pg and Sn and Lg , can only be poorly characterized on the basis of three-component recordings alone. The reason is that these arrivals must be described in terms of more than two independent generalized signal processes, at least three for Pg and Sn , and possibly up to five for Lg . Recognition of these phases will thus require the use of more sensors than signal processes in the observing sensor configuration, such as three-component sensors combined with a small tripartite array. We have investigated the feasibility of adaptive, automatic recognition of regional arrivials by a wavefield extrapolation scheme utilizing such a mini-array. The process, which appear to be promising, adaptively learns the particle-motion patterns of individual arrivals, including complex site-response functions, from examples of closely located regional events.  相似文献

The northeast-trending Pallatanga right-lateral strike-slip fault runs across the Western Cordillera connecting N50E-N70E trending normal faults in the Gulf of Guayaquil with N-S reverse faults in the Interandean Depression. Over most of its length, the fault trace has been partly obscured by erosional processes and can be inferred in the topography only at the large scale. Only the northern fault segment, which follows the upper Rio Pangor valley at elevations above 3600 m, is prominent in the morphology. Valleys and ridges cut and offset by the fault provide an outstanding record of right-lateral cumulative fault displacement. The fault geometry and kinematics of this particular fault segment can be determined from detailed topographic levellings. The fault strikes N30E and dips 75 to the NW. Depending on their size and nature, transverse morphological features such as tributaries of the Rio Pangor and intervening ridges, reveal right-lateral offsets which cluster around 27 ± 11m, 41.5 ± 4 m, 590 ± 65 m and 960 ± 70 m. The slip vector deduced from the short-term offsets shows a slight reverse component with a pitch of about 11.5 SW. The 41.5 ± 4 m displacements are assumed to be coeval with the last glacial termination, yielding a mean Holocene slip-rate of 2.9- 4.6 mm yr−1. Assuming a uniform slip rate on the fault in the long term, the 27 m offset appears to correlate with an identified middle Holocene morphoclimatic event, and the long term offsets of 590 m and 960 m coincide with the glacial terminations at the beginning of the last two interglacial periods.  相似文献

We invert ISC PcP and PKP absolute and differential traveltimes in an attempt to infer the long-wavelength topography of the core-mantle boundary (CMB). The data selection and processing methods are described and evaluated. These travel-time data are very noisy and the geographic distribution of the data is highly non-uniform, inhibiting reliable inference of CMB topography. Spatial averaging enhances the coherent component of the residual variance (related to heterogeneity), however, the random component of the variance is much larger than the coherent component. We show that for PcP data the coherent signal due to mantle heterogeneity overshadows that arising from the CMB, and that the effects of mantle heterogeneity are mapped into our inferred CMB solutions. The PcP data are not correlated across the spatial averaging bins and seem to have a strong bias due to small-scale structure and/or noise. The non-uniform geographic sampling of the data plays a role in the mapping of mantle heterogeneity onto the CMB. Spatial patterns of CMB models inferred from different phases do not agree. Amplitudes of seismically inferred CMB undulations vary greatly. The sensitivity of inferred CMB models to the processing, spatial averaging procedure, and inversion techniques are investigated. Topographic amplitudes increase strongly with increasing input residual variance. The power spectrum of inferred topography indicates that there are unmodelled heterogeneities that must be described with spherical harmonics of degree 6 and higher. Based on this work, we conclude that reliable inference of long-wavelength CMB topography is not likely with the current ISC data set or with a spherical harmonic expansion truncated to degree and order 6.  相似文献

The effect of anisotropy on the distribution of Earth's conductivity is evaluated by calculating the electromagnetic response of multilayered 2-D structures. The electric and magnetic fields are expanded in terms of Fourier series, the coefficients being obtained by applying the corresponding boundary conditions on each interface, given by arbitrary analytical functions. Then the results are used to analyse some particular structures.  相似文献

Seismicity ( Ml <3.5) in the southern Aegean, located using data collected during seven weeks of recording by a temporary network of seismological stations, largely follows the Hellenic arc; the Sea of Crete is nearly aseismic, and only little activity is located south of the Hellenic trench, within the African plate. Focal mechanisms exhibit reverse faulting in the external part of the arc and normal faulting inside it. This normal faulting indicates N-S extension in the northern Aegean, the Gulf of Corinth, the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands, but NW-SE extension in southern Peloponnese and western Crete and E-W extension in eastern Crete. This non-uniform strain pattern suggests that the Aegean region not only extends in a N-S sense, with the Hellenic arc moving south-westward relative to the Eurasian plate, but also by E-W extension of its southern margin, so that there is a net divergence of material.  相似文献
