It is a typical lament of the astronomers of today that there has been a dearth of bright comets in the 20th century and, particularly in its latter half. Many go on to point out the large number of very bright comets that were observed in the 18th and 19th century to reinforce the unfavourable comparison with modern times. Analysis of bright naked eye comet apparitions since 1750 demonstrates that there was a superavit of very bright comets in the second half of the last century. The second half of the twentieth century has shown exactly the average of one bright naked eye comet per 2.5 years that has been seen over two and a half centuries. The probable cause of theapparent lack of bright comets is the great increase in light pollution and the shift of population to the big cities. The observed statistics for the appearance of bright comets show no obvious evidence of perturbations of the Kuiper Belt by Planet X.  相似文献

The discovery of C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at 7 AU from the Sun provided the first opportunity to follow the activity of a bright comet over a large range of heliocentric distances rh. Production rates of a number of parent molecules and daughter species have been monitored both pre- and postperihelion. CO was found to be the major driver of the activity far from the Sun, surpassed by water within 3 AU whose production rate reached 1031 s−1 at perihelion. Gas production curves obtained for various species show several behaviours with rh. Gas production curves contain important information concerning the physical state of cometary ices, the structure of the nucleus and all the processes taking place inside the nucleus leading to outgassing. They are relevant to the study of several other phenomena such as the sublimation from icy grains, dust mantling or seasonal effects. For some species, such as H2CO or HNC, they permit to constrain their origin in the coma. We discuss models of subsurface gas production in distant comets and predictions of how such a source may vary as the comet moves along its orbit, approaching perihelion and receding again. Features in the observed gas production curves of comet Hale-Bopp are generally interpretable in terms of either subsurface production (typical example: CO at large rh) or free sublimation (typical example: H2O). Possible implications for the vertical stratification of the cometary ices are reviewed, and preference is found for a model with crystallization of amorphous ice close to the nuclear surface. We present a light curve of C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) compiledfrom more than 3000 visual observations of the comet made by members of the The Astronomer Group world-wide. These observations cover the period from discovery through to the end of 1997. The light curve shows that the rate of brightening of the comet varied widely at different times, with rapid rates of brightening at high heliocentric distance pre-perhelion and a comparably rapid post-perihelion fade. There is no evidence that the comet was suffering a large photometric outburst when first discovered, although a small outburst can be identified at perihelion. At least five difficult brightening regimes can be identified in the light curve between discovery and perihelion. From 2.5 AU to perihelion the rate of brightening with decreasing heliocentric distance was typical for “fairly” new comets(n ∼ 3.5, where “n” is the power law exponent of the heliocentric distance), although this was preceded by a period of very slow brightening with n ∼ 1 from r ∼ 4.0 AU to r ∼ 2.8 AU and followed by an initially more rapid brightening which appears to be related to the on-set of rapid water sublimation activity. The recent availability of bright comets has given us an excellent opportunity to study cometary chemistry. Comet Hale-Bopp (1995 O1)gave us the particularly rare opportunity to study a bright and active comet for almost two years. Our program concentrated on millimeter-wave observations of sulfur-bearing molecules in an effort to understand the total sulfur budget of the comet. Using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory 12-m telescope on Kitt Peak we monitored both the long and short-term variations in H2S, CS, and OCS, as well as observing H2CS and SO. This was the first observation of H2CS in any comet (Figure 1). Additionally, we mapped CS with the BIMA interferometer. Variations in the line profiles and changes in line intensity as large as a factor of two were seen in day to day observations of both H2S and CS. An example for H2S is shown in Figure 2. This is the first time we can attempt to study the entire group of sulfur-bearing molecules. Models of the sulfur coma have thus far largely been based on observations of the daughter products CS and atomic sulfur made over the last 18 years using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, coupled with radio observations of CS and H2S in several recent comets. Four new sulfur-bearing species have been observed in comets Hale-Bopp and Hyaku take, three of them parent species. The high resolution maps in CS will also allow spatial information to be included in the sulfur model for the first time. C/Hale-Bopp is the first comet in which so many sulfur species have been observed. Analysis of the abundances of these species in comparison to the total atomic sulfur observed should reveal whether or not we can now account for all of the primary sulfur sources in comets. Perhaps the most interesting question that these observations raised was why C/Hale-Bopp appeared to contain so much more SO and SO2 (as observed by others) than any other comet. This spurred the discovery that the UV fluorescence models of these species were incorrect (S. J. Kim, this issue). Analysis of the data and modeling of the sulfur budget are still underway. The action of the solar electromagnetic radiation on the moving interplanetary dust particles in its more complete form than the special case known as the Poynting-Robertson effect is theoretically discussed in application to meteoroid stream of comet Encke.Normal and transversal components of the perturbing nongravitational force are used due to the action of the solar electromagnetic radiation. It is shown that the normal component of the force is negligible. However, transversal component is very important: it can probably completely explain all the observed meteoroid streams situated along the orbit of comet Encke (and, possibly, some asteroids) as the product of the comet Encke alone. Much shorter time is required for producing such a meteoroid stream than is a general conception.If the idea about the significance of the transversal component of the nongravitational force (may be, not produced by electromagnetic radiation) is correct, it may have important consequences for our understanding of ageing of comets, global evolution of the cometary (and, partially, asteroidal) system, and, of course, for a long-term evolution of small interplanetary particles.  相似文献

The bright Kreutz Comet C/2007 L3 (SOHO) entered the fields of view of the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) COR1 telescopes on 7–8 June 2007. The 12° separation between the two spacecraft at the time afforded the opportunity to derive the position of the comet's tail in three-dimensional space using direct triangulation. The track of the comet's orbit is compared against more traditional orbital calculations using observations from the STEREO COR2 telescopes, and from the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The shape of the comet's tail shows that it is composed of dust particles released when the comet was between 18 and 22 solar radii, with no significant dust production after that. The comet did not survive perihelion passage, but a rare faint remnant of the comet tail persisted for several hours after the break-up, and was seen by both the SOHO and STEREO coronagraphs to drift slowly away from the Sun. This tail remnant was found to be composed of particles far back from the head of the comet. The motion of the tail remnant shows a loss of angular momentum during the passage through the solar corona. Atmospheric drag is estimated to account for a significant fraction of this change in angular momentum, but indications are that other mechanisms may be required to completely account for the total amount of change.  相似文献

1986年3—4月间,哈雷彗星的日心距为1和1.5 A.U.附近。我们使用云南天文台1米RCC望远镜和卡焦摄谱仪,取得了7张长狭缝光谱。这是我国唯一的一组哈雷彗星长狭缝光谱。光谱色散度为165(?)/mm,分辨率不小于7(?)。本文主要给出6张Kodak 103_a-O底片上3000—5100(?)波段的谱线证认结果。光谱片上主要出现了CN、C_2、C_3、CH、NH、OH等分子发射线,还可能存在NH_2、CH~+、N、H_2CO等发射线。光谱中连续辐射、吸收线较强,离子谱线少而弱,表明哈雷彗星是富尘的。OH(3090)发射线的出现既证实了卫星观测结果,又说明云南天文台的紫外观测条件是优越的。  相似文献

Three bright fireballs belonging to the August θ‐Aquillid (ATA) meteor shower were photographed by the Tajikistan fireball network in 2009. Two of them are classified as the meteorite‐dropping fireballs according to the determined parameters of the atmospheric trajectories, velocities, masses, and densities. Detection of the more dense bodies among cometary meteoroids points to a heterogeneous composition of the parent comet, and supports the suggestion that some meteorites might originate in the outer solar system, in the given case from the Jupiter‐family comet reservoir. A search for the stream's parent was undertaken among the near‐Earth asteroids (NEAs); as a result, the asteroid 2004MB6 was identified as a possible progenitor of the ATA meteoroid stream. Investigation of the orbital evolution of the 2004MB6 and the fireball‐producing meteoroid TN170809A showed that both objects have similar secular variations in the orbital elements during 7 kyr. The comet‐like orbit of the 2004MB6 and its association with the ATA shower suppose a cometary origin of the asteroid.  相似文献

We propose a new formal definition of discovery for a Solar System object. It is based on an objective and mathematically rigorous algorithm to assess when a set of observations is enough to constitute a discovery. When this definition is satisfied, in almost all cases the orbit is defined well enough to establish the nature of the object discovered (Main Belt vs. Near Earth Asteroid, Trans-Neptunian vs. long period comet). The frequency of occurrence of exceptions is estimated by a set of numerical experiments. The availability of a non-subjective definition of discovery allows some rules to be adopted for the assignment of discovery credit with a minimum risk of dispute. Such rules should be fair, encourage good practice by the observers and acknowledge the contribution of the orbit computers providing the identifications and the orbits, as well as the one of all the contributing observers.  相似文献

The paper considers morphology of craters, smooth surfaces, and flows as well as signatures of layering observed on nuclei of Borrelly, Wild 2, and Tempel 1. In our analysis, we emphasize the role of the so-called planation process, which involves avalanche-type flows and can be responsible for the formation of flow-like features, smooth terrains, terraces, and flat floors of some craters observed on cometary nuclei. In agreement with some other researchers (e.g., Belton, 2006), we suggest that in the thicker layers on Tempel 1 and in some features on Borrelly and Wild 2, we may see elements of the comet primordial structure. We also see more and less degraded impact craters formed early in the comet history in distant parts of the Solar System and landforms formed very recently during comet visits to the inner part of the Solar System. The recent resurfacing processes certainly changed the nucleus surface materials, possibly enhancing the sublimation of volatile species, so it should be taken into account in interpretations of the Deep Impact results and in selecting study areas when the Rosetta spacecraft will approach its target comet.  相似文献

We interpret the historical activity of comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle in terms of the observed characteristics of present-day short period comets. In this respect, it is now realized that such comets are liable to undergo significant outburst and mantle loss events at intervals separated by of order a few hundred years. On this basis one might well expect comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle to have undergone several outbursts since its earliest sighing in 1366. The limited absolute magnitude data available for 55P/Tempel–Tuttle is not inconsistent with the suggestion that the comet underwent outbursts during its 1699 and 1865 perihelion returns. If the outbursts of comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle are interpreted in terms of mantle loss events then the bright, electrophonic sound producing fireballs reported during the great Leonid meteor storm of 1833 may have been due to the Earth sampling mantle material ejected during the outburst of 1699. Some past October Draconid shower meteoroids fell apart in a spray of fragments at the end of their trajectory before slowing down, from which it was concluded that these were among the most fragile meteoroids known. In those instances, the dust could not be reliably traced to a particular return of the parent comet 21P/Giaconini-Zinner. On October 8th, 2011, Earth was predicted to transverse the 1900 A.D. dust ejecta of the comet. In 1900, the comet’s perihelion distance first moved significantly inwards to the Sun and ejection conditions could have been unusual. An airborne observing campaign was organized, with several teams contributing imaging and spectrographic cameras to study the manner in which these meteoroids released the volatile element sodium during the ablation process in the Earth’s atmosphere. IMCCE, ESA, and the SETI Institute contributed spectrographic cameras based on low-light WATEC 902H2 Ultimate, low-light LCC1, and GenII XX1332 image intensified cameras. An outburst was observed, much as predicted. Despite a lack of bright meteors, a total of 15 Draconid spectra were recorded. All show evidence of an early release of sodium. The loss of sodium was observed to coincide with the formation of a distinct wake of fragments. The observations show that 21P/Giacobini-Zinner ejected fragile meteoroids during the return in 1900. Those grains may have lost some sodium even before impacting Earth.  相似文献

Given that a strong 14C variation in AD 775 has recently been suggested to be due to the largest solar flare ever recorded in history, it is relevant to investigate whether celestial events observed around that time may have been aurorae, possibly even very strong aurorae, or otherwise related to the 14C variation (e.g. a suggested comet impact with Earth's atmosphere). We critically review several celestial observations from AD 757 to the end of the 770s, most of which were previously considered to be true, and in some cases, strong aurorae; we discuss in detail the East Asian records and their wording. We conclude that probably none among the events after AD 770 was actually an aurora, including the event in AD 776 Jan, which was misdated for AD 774 or 775; the observed white qi phenomenon that happened above the moon in the south‐east was most probably a halo effect near the full Moon – too late in any case to be related to the 14C variation in AD 774/5. There is another report of a similar (or identical) white qi phenomenon above the moon, reported just before a comet observation and dated to AD 776 Jan; the reported comet observed by the Chinese was misdated to AD 776, but actually sighted in AD 767. Our critical review of East Asian reports of aurorae circa AD 775 shows some very likely true Chinese auroral displays observed and reported for AD 762; there were also several events prior to AD 771 that may have been aurorae but are questionable. The brightness evolution of short-period comets is discussed in connection with their physical lifetimes. It is shown that changes in the fraction of the free-subliming area of the nuclear surface may be more important than mass decrease in determining brightness variations. The decrease in the activity of short-period comets caused by the buildup of a dust mantle may be interrupted—and partially reversed—by dust blowoffs that leave exposed areas of fresh ices. Short-period comets may thus be subject to random brightness fluctuations that make quite uncertain any derivation of their physical lifetime based on comparisons of their absolute brightness at different apparitions. As an alternate procedure, the numerical integration of the whole sample of short-period comet orbits carried out by A. Carusi, L.Kresák, E. Perozzi and G. B. Valsecchi (1984, Long-Term Evolution of Short-Period Comets. Istituto Astrofisica Spaziale Internal Report 12, Rome) is used to draw conclusions about the transfer rate of their perihelia from Jupiter's region to the region of the terrestrial planets (heliocentric distances<1.5 AU). It is found that about one short-period comet per century reaches the region of the terrestrial planets. From this result and under the assumption of a steady-state comet population, an average lifetime of the order of 6 × 103 years (~103 revolutions) is derived for a typical kilometer-sized short-period comet of perihelion distance q ~ 1 AU. Such a rather long comet lifetime, as compared to some previous derivations, is consistent with the survival of some periodic comets on small-q orbits of long dynamical time scales.  相似文献

Infrared images of Jupiter have been obtained on 5 nights before, during and shortly after the period of the impacts of the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (1993e) with the giant planet. Long lived bright spots produced by the impacts have been measured and analyzed. By measuring the intensity variation of the spots as a function of Jupiter rotation we show that these spots are likely constituted by large and thin clouds of dust located above the methane layer. The results from the analysis of the extensive CCD photometry that we haveobtained during the long-term monitoring (from its discovery until its break-up)of comet C/1999 S4 (linear) are presented here. Our observations showthat the comet did not always behave as expected: it showed activity ahead oftime and in the end became fainter instead of brighter as it approached perihelion.A sequence of images and a lightcurve are shown.  相似文献

The plasma tails of comets clearly show the demarcation of the solar wind into distinct equatorial and polar regions (Brandt and Snow (2000), Icarus 148, 52–64).The boundary is determined by the maximum extent in latitude of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The observational record contains many well-observed equatorial comets, but observations of comets in the polar region are relatively rare. In addition to its size and brightness, comet Hale–Bopp had an orbital inclination of 89.4° and was well observed for months in the polar region. We document the comet's large-scale appearance throughout the apparition, including the polar region and its transition into the equatorial region. The bright dust tail hampered observations of the plasma tail, particularly near the head, but images taken with a CO+ filter show a very large disconnection event (DE) on May 7 and May 8, 1997. The time of disconnection is estimated at approximately May 4.0. This DE is associated with a crossing of the HCS. The model calculations of the HCS indicate that other crossings might have occurred in late April, but given the uncertainty in the calculation, the comet might have missed the HCS. Sparse observational coverage and the bright dust tail prevent further investigation of the potential earlier HCS crossings. The plasma tail shows anomalous orientations at the highest latitudes and possible explanations are discussed.  相似文献

A unique short‐period (P = 0.65356(1) d) Mercury‐size Kepler exoplanet candidate KIC012557548b has been discovered recently by Rappaport et al. (2012). This object is a transiting disintegrating exoplanet with a circum‐planetary material–comet‐like tail. Close‐in exoplanets, like KIC012557548b, are subjected to the greatest planet‐star interactions. This interaction may have various forms. In certain cases it may cause formation of the comet‐like tail. Strong interaction with the host star, and/or presence of an additional planet may lead to variations in the orbital period of the planet. Our main aim is to search for comet‐like tails similar to KIC012557548b and for long‐term orbital period variations. We are curious about frequency of comet‐like tail formation among short‐period Kepler exoplanet candidates. We concentrate on a sample of 20 close‐in candidates with a period similar to KIC012557548b from the Kepler mission. We first improved the preliminary orbital periods and obtained the transit light curves. Subsequently we searched for the signatures of a circum‐planetary material in these light curves. For this purpose the final transit light curve of each planet was fitted with a theoretical light curve, and the residuals were examined for abnormalities. We then searched for possible long‐term changes of the orbital periods using the method of phase dispersion minimization. In 8 cases out of 20 we found some interesting peculiarities, but none of the exoplanet candidates showed signs of a comet‐like tail. It seems that the frequency of comet‐like tail formation among short‐period Kepler exoplanet candidates is very low. We searched for comet‐like tails based on the period criterion. Based on our results we can conclude that the short‐period criterion is not enough to cause comet‐like tail formation. This result is in agreement with the theory of the thermal wind and planet evaporation (Perez‐Becker & Chiang 2013). We also found 3 cases of candidates which showed some changes of the orbital period. Based on our results we can see that orbital period changes are not caused by comet‐like tail disintegration processes, but rather by possible massive outer companions. In a consortium analysis of a large particle captured from the coma of comet 81P/Wild 2 by the Stardust spacecraft, we report the discovery of a field of fine‐grained material (FGM) in contact with a large sulfide particle. The FGM was partially located in an embayment in the sulfide. As a consequence, some of the FGM appears to have been protected from damage during hypervelocity capture in aerogel. Some of the FGM particles are indistinguishable in their characteristics from common components of chondritic‐porous interplanetary dust particles, including glass with embedded metals and sulfides and equilibrated aggregates. The sulfide exhibits surprising Ni‐rich lamellae, which may indicate that this particle experienced a long‐duration heating event after its formation but before incorporation into Wild 2.  相似文献
