Quaternary volcanic rocks of Stromboli (Italy) can be divided into older calc-alkaline and younger shoshonitic series. The SiO2 contents of the rocks range from 50% to 61% but the majority of them are basalts. The rocks show systematic variations in chemical composition which correlate with the volcanic stratigraphy, such that, at a given SiO2 content, K and other incompatible elements such as REE increase with decreasing age. In addition, the La/Yb ratio increases while the K/Rb, K/Ba, Zr/Ce and Zr/Nb ratios decrease towards the top of the volcanic pile. On the other hand, the abundances of transition elements, V, Co, Sc and Zn, like most major elements are broadly similar in comparable rocks of different ages. It is suggested that the parent magmas were derived by partial melting from upper mantle peridotite enriched in incompatible elements by fluids released from the descending oceanic lithosphere. The temporal chemical variations may probably be related to the lengths of time during which fluids were in contact with the upper mantle source.  相似文献

Volcanoes of the East Japan volcanic arc are divided into two groups on the basis of their phenocryst assemblages; volcanoes with lavas or pyroclastic rocks containing quartz phenocrysts and no hornblende phenocrysts (type A), and those with rocks containing hornblende phenocrysts and no quartz phenocrysts (type B). Type A volcanoes occur only in the narrow region along the volcanic front, whereas type B volcanoes are distributed in the area closer to the Sea of Japan.Recent experimental studies on calc-alkaline andesite-dacite under H2O-saturated and -undersaturated conditions indicate that the liquidus temperature (maximum thermal stability limit) of quartz decreases drastically with increasing H2O content in magma, whereas the liquidus temperatures of hornblende and biotite are relatively constant with variations in the H2O content and bulk chemical composition of the magma.It is suggested from the lateral variation of mafic phenocryst assemblages [1] and from the above result that the temperature of the parental magmas of these volcanoes increases, and their H2O contents decrease, towards the volcanic front in the East Japan volcanic arc.Such lateral variations in the H2O contents of magmas under the East Japan volcanic arc are in agreement with those of other incompatible elements (K, Rb, REE, etc.). If H2O-undersaturated partial melting of upper mantle peridotite can be represented by the univariant line (olivine, Ca-rich clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and liquid coexist) in the system H2OMg2SiO4z.sbnd;CaMgSi2O6z.sbnd;SiO2, the decrease of H2O content in the magma suggests that the melting temperature of the peridotitic mantle may gradually increase, and so the degree of partial melting may increase, towards the volcanic front. The lateral variation of other incompatible elements can also be explained by this model.  相似文献

The lesser antilles — A discussion of the Island arc magmatism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The active island arc of Lesser Antilles marks the junction between the Atlantic and Carribbean lithospheric plates. With the exception of the alkali basalts of Grenada, the volcanics of the arc can be regarded as belonging to the low-K, island arc, calc-alkaline suite. Although compositions ranging from basalt to rhyolite have been described, porphyritic andesite appears to be the dominant rock type on most volcanoes (intermediate centers). Variable amounts of basalt and basaltic andesite occur and rarely predominate over andesite (latter are basic centers), whereas the more silicic members are only occasionally found. The calc-alkaline suite is characterized by relatively high Al2O3 and CaO and low K2O, Rb and Ni. Variations, especially in the alkali elements, occur both with space and time. A characteristic feature of many of the volcanoes is the occurrence in the basalt and basaltic andesite volcanics of plutonic blocks, often showing cumulate textures. The blocks which ware composed of plagioclase — amphibole — olivine — clinopyroxene — magnetite are thought to be the products of fractionation. The differences between basic and intermediate centers is probably due to the frequency that the magma ascended to the surface or remained in high level chambers where fractionation occurred.  相似文献

Volcanic rocks from six of the currently or recently active volcances of the Mariana Island are show little variation in major element abundances. SiO2 content averages 51.5 wt.%. The flows are high in Al2O (mean 17.7 wt.%) and Fe oxides (mean 10.1 wt.% calculated as FeO only), and moderate in MgO content (mean 4.7 wt.%), Na2O (mean 2.7 wt.%), and K2O (mean 0.7 wt.%). Only the rocks from Farallon de Pajaros, the northernmost of the Mariana Islands, deviate slightly from the average of the analyses. Three analyses from this island are slightly higher in SiO2 (about 54 wt.%) and Al2O3, and are lower in total Fe oxides and MgO. According to preferred classification, the lavas of the Mariana Islands can be termed mela-andesites, high-alumina basalts, or calc-alkaline (orogenic) basalts. The K2O values (mean 0.7 wt.%) obtained from lavas of the Mariana Islands are significantly higher than the K2O values (about 0.33 wt.%) from volcanics of the Izu chain to the north. Inasmuch as the substantial scatter in location of earthquake foci beneath both arcs prevents accurate delineation of the upper boundary of the Benioff zone, it presently cannot be determined whether this discrepancy in K2O values reflects a difference in depth from the volcanic are to the dipping seismic zone or relates to other phenomena. The older volcanic islands within the Mariana-Bonin island chain apparently defined an island arc system during Eocene to Miocene time. This indicates that the present plane of convergence between the Pacific plate and the Philippine Sea plate has defined the convergence between these plates since Eocene time.  相似文献

The present paper reports the results of a detailed stratigraphical, petrological and geochemical investigation on the island of Stromboli, Aeolian arc, Southern Tyrrhenian sea. Major and trace element data determined on a large quantity of samples from well-established stratigraphic positions indicate that the magmatological evolution of the island through time was more complex than previously known. The activity of the exposed part of Stromboli, which occurred over a time span of about 100 000 years, started with the emission of high-K calc-alkaline (HKCA) volcanics, which were covered by calc-alkaline (CA), shoshonitic (SHO), high-K calc-alkaline (HKCA) and potassic (KS) products. The most recent activity consists of HKCA lavas and the present-day SHO-basaltic volcanics emitted by mildly explosive “strombolian” activity. Most of the products are lavas, with minor amounts of pyroclastic rocks emplaced mainly during the early stages of activity. The transition from the SHO to the KS cycle was associated with the collapse of the upper part of the volcanic apparatus; the transition from KS to the present-day SHO activity has been found to have occurred at the time of the sliding of the western portion of the volcano that generated the “Sciara del Fuoco” depression. The rock series cropping out at Stromboli show variable enrichment in potassium, incompatible trace elements and radiogenic Sr which increase from CA through HKCA, and SHO up to KS rocks. Major, trace element and Sr-isotopic data agree in indicating that the HKCA and SHO series evolved by crystal/liquid fractionation starting from different parental liquids, whereas crustal assimilation appears to have been the leading process during the evolution of KS volcanics. Mixing processes also played a role although they can be well documented only when they occurred between magmas with different isotopic and geochemical characteristics. Geochemical modelling based on trace element and isotopic data indicates that the mafic magmas of the different volcanic series may be generated by melting of an upper mantle heterogeneously enriched in incompatible elements and radiogenic Sr by addition, via subduction, of different amounts of crustal material. Geochemical data, however, are also in agreement with the alternative hypothesis that the most mafic magmas of the different series have been generated by combined processes of fractional crystallization, assimilation and mixing of a CA magma in a deep-sited magma chamber; the mafic magmas formed by these complex processes were successively emplaced in a shallow reservoir where they evolved by simple fractional crystallization (HKCA and SHO series) and by assimilation of crustal material (KS). The occurrence of changes in the geochemical signatures of the magmas at the time of the structural modification of the volcano is believed to favour the hypothesis that the variable composition observed in the volcanic rocks of Stromboli is the result of processes occurring within the volcanic system.  相似文献

Some trace element data for volcanic rocks found at different levels, from Tertiary to Holocene, in south-eastern Sicily (Iblean Plateau and Mt. Etna) are presented and discussed in the present paper in order to better the information about the origin and relationships of the various rock types. Four groups of volcanic rocks have been recognized on the basis of their major element chemistry: 1) low-K tholeiites, 2) associated alkali basalts to nephelinites of the Iblean Plateau (Upper Pliocene to Lower Pleistocene), 3) the basal subalkaline lavas of Mt. Etna, and 4) the alkalic suite rocks that make up the bulk of the volcano. The distribution of Rb, Sr, Ni, Cr, Co, Cu, REE, Th and Sc suggests:
  1. an origin of the Iblean magmas by a different degree of partial melting of a Rb-poor and possibly slightly hetereogeneous mantle;
  2. quite distinct source compositions for the Etnean magmas, relative to those of the Iblean area, on the basis of their Rb and Sr contents;
  3. an origin of the alkalic rocks of Mt. Etna from independently generated magma(s) rather than by crystal fractionation of the Etnean subalkaline magmas or of a magma having the geochemical features of the Iblean alkali basalts; evidence for this is given by the distribution features of the incompatible elements showing an origin for these rocks from compositionally different parent magmas and/or an evolution under widely variable environmental conditions;
  4. the primary character for the chemical differences observed in some of the Etnean subalkaline rocks that can be accounted for by different physico-chemical conditions at their source rather than by crystal fractionation processes.

The Pleistocene volcanic rocks from northern Taiwan include the Tatun volcano group and the Chilung volcano group. Three rock types occur in this area: Tatun volcano group yield high-alumina basalt and andesites, whereas the chilung volcano group mainly consists of dacites. In addition, amphibole-rich nodules have also been found in different cruptive units of the former volcano group. Around seventy sample of various rock types have been conducted for geochemical studies, including analyses of major elements and trace elements such as Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Ni, Zn, Zr, V, Rb and Sr. Results of Al2O3, MnO, TiO2 total alkali content, MgO/ΣFeO and K2O/Na2O ratios and AMF diagram indicate that these Pleistocene volcanic rocks belong to typical calalkaline rock series. Detailed study of the trace elements reveals that these volcanic rocks are closely correlated with rocks of continental margin type with respect to Rb, Cu, Co, Ni, V and Cr contents, and K/Rb and Ni/Co ratios. These rocks are most probably derived from the fractionation of basaltic magma controlled mainly by the crystallization of amphibole and plagioclase with magnetite playing a minor role.  相似文献

A summary of the available data on the peralkaline rocks of S. Pietro and S. Antioco islands, together with, new chemical analyses and some preliminary K-Ar ages are reported. Peralkaline rocks occur as ignimbrites, lava flows and domes usually deeply affected by hydrothermal alteration. Pantelleritic varieties are found within the dominantly comenditic association, which display K2O contents higher than Na2O ones. K-Ar data indicate that these peralkaline rocks have a middle Miocene age (? 15 m.y.). They occur in close field association with coheval andesitic and subalkaline acid volcanics belonging to the final products of the Tertiary calc-alkaline volcanic cicle of Sardinia.  相似文献

The synorogenic intrusive activity of the eastern part of the Seiland province evolved from tholeiitic basalt low in K and Ti, through high-K calc-alkaline magmas and possible transitional basalt, to alkaline olivine basalt and picrite; finally, highly differentiated alkaline magmas and carbonatites were emplaced. For intrusive rocks with equivalent SiO2 contents, K2O, K2O + Na2O and K2O/Na2O increased with time, and the degree of iron enrichment in basaltic suites dimished. The western part of the province shows no equivalent evolution, tholeiitic magmas being emplaced at the same time as calc-alkaline magmas to the east.The magmatism is believed to have stemmed from a diapiric complex established in the mantle above a Benioff zone dipping to the east beneath the deforming Andean-type margin of the Baltic plate. Tectonic shortening of the continental edge and rearward movement of the underthrust plate relative to the asthenosphere resulted in migration of the plate junction, steepening of the seismic zone, and increasing depth to the magmagenetic region.  相似文献

Greenrocks are very common in the Tananao Schist of eastern Taiwan where the known fossils are of Permian in age. Fourty-four greenrock samples were chemically analysed and their magma types studied. The chemical composition of the greenrocks have marked variation common in volcanic rock series. The greater parts of the greenrocks belong to basalt and a smaller portion to basaltic andesite (SiO2 53 %–58 %). They are probably isochemical with their original igneous rocks except for volatile components. No striking Fe-enrichment exists in a MgO-ΣFeO-(Na2O=K2O) diagram. Based on (Na2O=K2O)-Al2O3-SiO2 diagrams afterKuno (1960), the parent magma of the rocks mostly belong to the high-alumina basalt series and only a few to alkali olivine basalt series. The high-alumina basalt can be looked upon as having an incipient trend for the calc-alkaline or the hypersthene series ofKuno (1959). The average K/Rb ratio of 460, the average TiO2 percentage of 1.5 %, and low K2O of around 0.5 % seem to warrant a conclusion that the basaltic rocks were poured out in the upper Paleozoic eugeosyncline on an embryonic continental crust. Considering the rock association of amphibolite plus serpentine (dismembered ophiolite), meta-graywacke, metachert, crystalline limestone, metaarkose, and metabasites in the Tananao Schist, the most probable site for the eugeosyncline may been an extensional trough near the fragmented paleo-Asiatic margin.  相似文献

Island arc volcanism has contributed and is still contributing to continental growth, but the composition of island arcs differs from that of the upper continental crust in its lower abundance of Si, K, Rb, Ba, Sr and light rare earth elements. In their advanced stage of evolution, island arcs contain more than 80% of tholeiitic and 15% of ‘island arc’ calc-alkaline rocks with varied SiO2 contents. The larger proportion of tholeiitic rocks is in the lower crustal levels. The high stratigraphical levels of the island arcs are composed of tholeiitic plus calc-alkaline and/or high potash (shoshonitic) associations with higher abundances of K, Rb, Sr, and Ba. Stratification of the island arc crust is accentuated by another type of calc-alkaline volcanism (Andean type) originating at a late stage of arc evolution, probably by partial melting at the base of the crust. This causes enrichment of the upper crust in K, Rb, Ba and REE and accounts for upper crustal abundances of these elements as well as of SiO2.  相似文献

The Tiefosi granitic pluton is located 5 km northwest of Xinyang City,northern Dabie Orogen,and was emplaced in the Proterozoic Qinling Group. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating suggests its crystallization at 436 ± 11 Ma. It is composed of monzogranite and syenogranite containing some amounts of muscovite and few mafic minerals. The rocks are characterized by high and restricted SiO2 content,low FeO,Fe2O3 and MgO contents,high K2O/Na2O ratio,and display high-K calc-alkaline and peraluminous (ACNK>1.1) characteristics. They are generally enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSE). They can be divided into three groups in light of rare earth elements (REE) and trace elements. Group I is moderate in ΣREE and characterized by the absence of Eu anom-aly,high (La/Yb)N ratio,and moderate Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. Group Ⅱ has moderately negative Eu anomaly,low (La/Yb)N ratio and high ΣREE contents,Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. Group Ⅲ displays positive Eu anomaly,moderate (La/Yb)N ratio,and low ΣREE,Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. The calculated εNd(440Ma) values of the rocks vary from 8.8 to 9.9 and Nd depleted mantle model ages are about 2.0 Ga,which resemble those of the paragneisses from the Qinling Group. The results indicate that the Tiefosi granite is crust-derived,syn-collisional S-type granite. Generation of Group I was related to low degree melting of the Qinling Group,while Group Ⅱ was formed by fractionational crystallization of plagioclase from Group I magmas,and Group Ⅲ resulted possibly from magma mingling with plagioclase cumulates. The Tiefosi granite was formed within crustal level related to the collision between the North China and South China blocks in the Early Paleozoic time.  相似文献

Four-hundred and twenty-one analyses of quartz-normative, peralkaline, extrusive rocks have been collected from the literature and from unpublished sources and are used to examine chemical variation in this group of rocks. Comparisons are particularly made between the full body of data and the variations recorded in the non-hydrated obsidians alone byMacdonald andBailey (1973). It is argued that the compositions of the magmas which formed these obsidians and those which subsequently crystallised were similar as regards the major oxides SiO2, Al2O3, FeO + Fe2O3, Na2O and K2O. Marked variations in the abundances of the minor oxides CaO and TiO2 are shown to be a result of geographical location. Small but significant differences in the distribution of Al and Fe as a function of normative quartz can be recognised between various pantelleritic suites. A new classificatory scheme is proposed, based on the iron (as FeO) and Al2O3 contents. This is simpler than previously employed normative classifications, is more applicable to crystalline rocks, and, happily, in 95 % of cases gives the same rock name as the normative system.  相似文献

Ceboruco is a major composite volcano at the western end of the Mexican Volcanic Belt, near the junction between the North American and Pacific plates. The volcano is built from successive eruptions of andesite lavas and pyroclastic rocks, and major eruptions during its history have resulted in the formation of two concentric calderas. The youngest volcanic activity has included the extrusion of dacites within the inner caldera and a voluminous flank eruption of andesite during 1870–72. Fumarolic activity persists to the present day. Chemical analyses show that the lavas are of cale-alkaline type and rangs from andesite (SiO2=58–61%) to acid dacite (SiO2=68%) in composition. The rate of increase of K2O relative to SiO is greater than that in volcanic rocks from the Mexican Volcanic Belt as a whole. This indicates that simple models based on the application of such relationships may not be adequate to explain the petrogenesis of calc-alkaline lavas.  相似文献

Towada caldera, lying near the northern end of Honsyu, Japan was constructed by eruptions of lavas and pyroclastic materials in three separate periods. At the ends of the first and second periods, great amounts of pumice were erupted in the form of pumice flow and fall respectively. Each pumice cruption was followed by collapse of the center of the cones resulting in double calderas. The lavas of these three periods and the pumice of the first and second periods were chemically analysed. The result was plotted in several different types of variation diagrams. The points for the lavas and pumice lie generally on smooth curves, indicating that the magmas which caused the pumice cruptions belong to the same general differentiation series as do the lavas. If SiO2/FeO+Fe2O, is plotted against sodification index (MgO x 100/MgO+FeO+Fe2O, +Na2O+K2O), points for the lavas lie on a straight line, whereas those for the pumice lie on another straight line branching from the former at some point in the middle stage of differentiation. The rate of increase of this ratio in the pumice is greater than in the lavas, implying that less SiO2 and more iron were subtracted from the magmas producing the pumice than from those producing the lavas. This was probably caused by crystallization of a greater amount of magnetite in the former magmas possibly due to higher oxygen partial pressure which may be in turn related to higher water content. It is not necessary to postulate melting of the crust in order to generate magmas of the pumice eruptions of the central type.  相似文献

Major, trace element and Sr-isotope compositions are reported for a suite of lavas coming from the area of Commenda in the SE Vulsinian district. The analyzed samples have all low silica contents and variable but generally high CaO, MgO and FeOt. Based on K2O% and K2O/Na2O ratio, the rocks from Commenda can be classified as belonging to the Potassic Series (KS) and the High-potassium Series (HKS). The HKS rocks appear to have derived by cristal/liquid fractionation from the most mafic types with separation of olivine and clinopyroxene and then of clinopyroxene + leucite. The most primitive HKS rocks have aphyric texture and high Mg-values, Cr and Ni contents which are close or within the range of values of magmas formed by partial melting of periodititic mantle sources. The KS rocks have lower incompatible element contents as the HKS rocks with similar degree of evolution.The variations of Sr-isotopic ratios of the analyzed rocks and of other Vulsinian lavas, indicate that the basic HKS Vulsinian rocks did not interact significantly with the continental crust. Instead, the KS appears to have evolved by combined crystal fractionation and assimilation processes, starting from parental magmas which had87Sr/86Sr ratio not significantly lower than that found in the less evolved rocks of the suite.The most primitive HKS rocks from Commenda have hygromagmatophile element distribution pattern characterized by high ratio of LILE/HFSE with negative anomalies of Ta and Ti, resembling closely those of other Roman mafic volcanics. The primitive geochemical characteristics of the Commenda rocks exclude that these features are the products of interaction with the crust and provide a further support to the hypothesis of a genesis within a subduction-modified mantle source.  相似文献

A suite of 16 basanitic volcanic rocks, representing all stages in the evolution of the La Breña — El Jagüey (LBEJ) Maar Complex, has been studied petrographically and analyzed for mineral compositions and whole-rock major element, trace element, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions. Two feldspathic granulite xenoliths were also studied as possible lower-crustal contaminants to the LBEJ magmas. The volcanic rocks contain the stable minerals olivine, plagioclase, augite, and titanomagnetite±ilmenite, plus a diverse suite of xenocrusts derived from disaggregation of mantle xenoliths of spinel lherzolite (olivine, orthopyroxene, spinel) and lower-crustal granulite xenoliths (plagioclase, quartz, augite, ilmenite). Late-stage interstitial melts rich in Fe and Ti migrated into vesicles in several samples, forming coarse-grained segregation vesicles that are dominated by ilmenite blades up to 2 mm long. The whole-rock elemental data are typical of intra-plate basanitic rocks, with strong enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (i.e. K, Th, U) as well as high field strength elements (i.e. Nb, Ta) relative to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) and estimates of primordial mantle abundances. Mg# increased systematically with time during the evolution of the LBEJ Maar Complex, from 57.0–58.2 in the pre-maar lavas to 59.1–63.8 in the post-maar lavas. Compatible elements (Ca, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni) correlate positively with Mg#, whereas a large group of incompatible elements (Al, Na, K, P, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, Hf, Ta, Th, U) correlate negatively with Mg#. These trends can be closely reproduced by simple models of fractional crystallization, provided that the incompatible element abundances of the parental, high-Mg# magmas are allowed minor variability. All successful fractionation models demand an important role for augite, despite its presence in the LBEJ volcanic rocks as only a late-stage microphenocrystic and groundmass mineral. Minor garnet fractionation is necessary to produce depletion of heavy rare earth element (REE) abundances in the pre-maar lavas, whose REE patterns cross those for the rest of the suite. The importance of augite and garnet fractionation indicate that the differentiation of the LBEJ magmas took place within the upper mantle, a conclusion that is supported by the presence of spinel lherzolite xenoliths in magmas from all stages in the evolution of the maar complex. Isotopic data for seven LBEJ volcanic rocks show the following ranges: 87Sr/86Sr 0.70327–0.70347, Nd 4.2–5.0, 206Pb/204Pb 18.60–18.81, 207Pb/204Pb 15.58–15.65, 208Pb/204Pb 38.19–38.58. Sr-Nd values are negatively correlated and form a trend parallel to the mantle array, overlapping the field for ocean island basalts (OIB). The LBEJ rocks have similar 87Sr/86Sr values but lower Nd compared to basanitic rocks from the US Basin and Range Province (BRP). Pb isotopic ratios are positively correlated and overlap the braod fields for MORB and OIB and the small fields for Mexican ore deposits and volcanic rocks from the active subduction-related Mexican Volcanic Belt. The LBEJ rocks have slightly more radiogenic Pb than basanitic rocks from the US BRP. Despite correlations among the isotopic ratios of the LBEJ suite, none of these ratios correlate with position in the eruption sequence, Mg#, or any other compositional parameter. The two lower-crustal xenoliths have high 87Sr/86Sr values (0.707, 0.710) and low Nd (-1.5,-8.0) compared to the LBEJ volcanic rocks, but their Pb isotopic compositions are only slightly more radiogenic than the volcanic rocks. These data do not support the widely held view that the lower crust is a major reservoir of unradiogenic Pb. In order to further constrain the role played by crustal contamination in generating the isotopic diversity in the LBEJ suite, we conducted an extensive investigation of Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic ratios for scoria clasts from different levels of a single scoria-fall horizon in the pyroclastic sequence related to the formation of La Breña Maar. Our results do not support an important role for crustal contamination in the LBEJ magmas. Rather, we conclude that minor isotopic variability exists in the mantle source regions beneath the maar complex.  相似文献

1) Petrochemical studies of volcanic rocks shows that alkaline rocks of continents and oceans are different genetically in spite of their mineralogical and chemical similarity. 2) Oceanic rocks develop according to the following type: tholeiitic basalt — olivine basalt — alkaline rocks. 3) Continental alkaline rocks are derivatives of initially alkaline basalts and are connected by gradual transitions with calc-alkaline rocks of island arcs. 4) The source of all volcanic rocks is the upper mantle. Therefore the existence of two main types of rocks — oceanic and continental — reflects basic heterogeneities in composition and structure of the upper mantle.  相似文献

Experimental evidence for the role of accessory phases in magma genesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent experimental studies have established petrogenetic models based on melting processes involving major phases. The possible residual character of trace-element-enriched accessory phases is not considered for temperatures well above the solidus in these models. In contrast, geochemists, applying trace element data to independently test the experimentally-based models, have concluded that residual (or fractionating) accessory phases may have an essential role in controlling the trace element (especially REE) distributions in magmas.Some recent experimental work provides data on the stability of potentially significant accessories such as sphene, rutile, apatite, zoisite and mica in basaltic compositions at elevated P and T. Sphene is stable to 1000°C with 60% melting of a hydrous tholeiite at 15 kbar. At higher pressure, rutile is the only Ti-rich accessory phase, and is present to at least 1000°C and high degrees of melting. Published REE data on sphene and rutile suggest that these phases may be important in controlling REE distribution in some magmas. For example, island are high-Mg, low-Ca-Ti tholeiites with low REE abundances and U-shaped patterns (Hickey and Frey, 1979) may reflect the role of sphene. In addition to rutile, similar close-packed Ti-rich accessory phases such as priderite, perovskite, crichtonite and loveringite may occur in mantle-derived magmas. These phases readily accommodate the REE but their possible role needs experimental confirmation.Apatite is recorded in hawaiite (1.16% P2Os) with 2% H2O added at 5–6 kbar and 1050°C within 30°C of the liquidus, but at present no other experimental data are available on its high P, T stability, although thermodynamic calculations indicate that F may increase its stability markedly. Apatite is well known in high-pressure inclusions and as a phenocryst phase in rocks of the alkaline and calc-alkaline series.Ilmenite is known as a near-liquidus phase in some mafic magmas at 5–10 kbar, but its stability decreases to near-solidus at 25–30 kbar. Zoisite occurs in hydrous mafic compositions at mantle pressures, but it is confined to temperatures < 780°C. Finally, mica has a wide temperature range of stability at mantle pressures, especially in potassic magmas, and phlogopitic mica is stable to 1040°C at 20–25 kbar in a hydrous, K-rich “tholeiite” (1.6% K2O).  相似文献

143Nd/144Nd,87Sr/86Sr and REE results are reported on volcanic rocks from the islands of Dominica and St. Kitts in the Lesser Antilles. Particular attention is given to the lavas and xenoliths of the Foundland (basalt-andesite) and the Plat Pays (andesite-dacite) volcanic centres on Dominica. Combined major and trace element [2] and isotope results suggest that the bulk of the andesites and dacites on Dominica, and by analogy in the rest of the arc, are produced by fractional crystallisation of basaltic magma. The differences in the erupted products of the two volcanoes do not appear to be related to any significant differences in the source rocks of the magmas.Along the arc87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.7037 on St. Kitts, to 0.7041–0.7047 on Dominica, and 0.7039–0.7058 on Grenada [5], and these are accompanied by a parallel increase in K, Sr, Ba and the light REE's. Moreover, compared with LIL-element-enriched and -depleted rocks from MOR and intraplate environments, the basic rocks from the Lesser Antilles are preferentially enriched in alkaline elements (K, Ba, Rb, Sr) relative to less mobile elements such as the rare earths.143Nd/144Nd varies from 0.51308 on St. Kitts, to 0.51286 on Dominica, and 0.51264–0.51308 on Grenada [5], and all these samples have relatively high87Sr/86Sr ratios compared with the main trend of Nd and Sr isotopes for most mantle-derived volcanic rocks. Alkaline elements and87Sr appear to have been introduced from the subducted ocean crust, but the results on other, less mobile elements are more ambiguous — island arc tholeiites (as on St. Kitts) do not appear to contain significant amounts of REE's, Zr, Y, etc., from the subducted oceanic crust, but such a contribution may be present in more LIL-element-enriched calc-alkaline rock types.  相似文献
