Turnagain Arm is a macrotidal fjord‐style estuary. Glacier Creek is a small, glacially fed stream which enters the estuary tangentially near Girdwood, Alaska. Trenches and daily sedimentation measurements were made in a mudflat along the fluvio–estuarine transition of Glacier Creek during several summers since 2003. Each year, the flats appear to erode during the winter and then accrete vertically in the spring and summer. In each of the years studied, tidal laminae in vertically thickening and thinning laminae bundles were deposited by twice daily tides in neap–spring tidal cycles. In 2004, bundles of thickening and thinning laminae couplets were noted in trenches cut into the flats. Five laminae bundles alternated between thicker and thinner bundles, corresponding to the perigean (high spring) and apogean (low spring) tides. Well‐preserved apogean–perigean cycles have rarely been documented in modern tidal flat sediments. At this location, vertical accretion of tidal rhythmites with well‐developed neap–spring cyclicity is possible because of the near‐complete removal of the flat from the previous year, which creates accommodation space for vertical accretion without significant reworking. Macrotidal conditions, no reworking by infaunal invertebrates, protection from the main tidal channel by a gravel bar and protection from storm waves and fluvial erosion by a recess in the sedge marsh that surrounds the flats all aid in preservation of rhythmites during aggradation. The position of the flats relative to tidal range allows for accumulation of complete spring cycles and incomplete neap cycles. In the summer of 2004, apogee and perigee were closely aligned with the new and full moons, resulting in successive strong perigee and apogee tides which probably aided in the accumulation of successive thick–thin spring cycles encoding the apogean and perigean tidal cycle. The 998-cm long sediment core was collected from the South basin of the Caspian Sea. Sediments from the lower, Late Pleistocene part of the core (998-90 cm) are marked by laminations, which rapidly disappear under oxidising conditions. TEM/EDS analyses of magnetic extracts, done at laminae scale, show the presence of iron monosulphide (greigite Fe3S4) in grey and black laminae. There are also small amounts of magnetite. Magnetic hysteresis parameters Mrs/Ms and Bcr/Bc, presented on a Day plot, cluster near SD/PSD boundary, with smaller particles for black laminae. This tendency is due to a higher content of greigite, relative to coarser grained detrital magnetite in black laminae, and to a lower relative content of greigite in grey laminae. Analyses of Ca/Mg carbonates, grain size of the bulk sediment, feldspars/quartz ratios and water content show that these parameters do not vary at laminae scale. These results suggest that the laminae are of early diagenetic rather than detrital origin, reflecting rhythmic, subtle variations in the geochemical environment during laminae formation.  相似文献

Siliceous oncoids, up to 4 cm in diameter, are common on the laterally extensive sinter aprons that surround the spectacular geysers and hot springs at El Tatio in northern Chile. Many of these complex oncoids developed close to geyser and spring vents that discharge boiling water. Internally the oncoids, which are composed of precipitated amorphous silica, are formed of complex arrays of spicules and concentric laminae as well as detrital volcanic grains. Spicular growth is dominant in most examples. The formation and growth of the spicules and concentric laminae were mediated by a microbial community which included filamentous microbes, mucus, and possibly bacteria. The microbes and mucus were silicified by replacement and encrustation. In some laminae the filamentous microbes lay parallel to the growth surface; in other laminae most filaments forming the thin mats were suberect. Amorphous silica precipitated between the filaments occluded porosity and commonly disguised the microbial fabric. The oncoids grew on the proximal sinter aprons around the geyser vents and hot spring pools. Most growth took place subaerially with the silica delivered to the precipitation sites by splashing water from the geysers and/or periodic shallow flooding of the discharge aprons. Unlike silica oncoids at other geothermal sites, vertical growth of oncoids that formed in some rimstone pools was not limited by water depth.  相似文献

The late-Kimmeridgian Southern Jura (France) is a carbonate platform where laminated limestones accumulated locally (notably at Orbagnoux). The two types of laminations encountered result either from particle settling in a very quiet environment or from bacterial mat growth. In the latter case, as revealed by acid etching, the dark-coloured laminae result from filamentous cyanobacteria developments, whereas the light-coloured laminae appear, surprisingly, to comprise packed peloids. These peloids are interpreted as originating from the in vivo or shortly post mortem calcification of sheaths of coccoid cyanobacteria in an environment loaded by temporary excess alkalinity (and possible H2S emissions). Thus, a simple etching treatment reveals the unsuspected, albeit prominent, role of cyanobacteria in the genesis of the limestones from Orbagnoux. As such facies are widespread in Late Jurassic records, the role of cyanobacteria in their formation deserves re-evaluation.  相似文献

Large pisoliths from the Laguna Pastos Grandes playa in the Bolivian Altiplano have a wide diversity of cortical fabrics and variable mineralogical composition. The cortical laminae are composed of radial calcite bundles, spar calcite, micrite, amorphous silica, mixed micrite-amorphous silica, quartz, gypsum and halite. Diatoms are common in the outer parts of some radial calcite laminae and amorphous silica laminae, but cyanobacterial filaments are rare. Although the organization of the cortical laminae is highly variable, some repetitive sequences of different laminae are present. Cavities in and between pisoliths contain micrite, detrital grains, calcite bundles and peloids morphologically similar to those found in marine reefs. The pisoliths grow in shallow ephemeral pools fed by hot springs. Radial bundles of calcite precipitate rapidly by degassing and photosynthetic removal of CO2 following spring snowmelt. Conditions for micrite precipitation are unclear, but there is evidence to suggest formation in partially stagnant waters, some of elevated salinity. Amorphous silica laminae precipitate mainly by evaporative concentration; quartz may precipitate from warm silica-rich spring waters that remain below amorphous silica saturation. The evaporite minerals form during desiccation of the pools or from spray. The peloids in cavities are probably primary precipitates. Different types of laminae may form simultaneously in different pools because of the highly variable conditions across the playa. Lateral migration of spring locations through time has created a complex carbonate-silica pavement. Large spherical pisoliths form in outflow channels near spring orifices and across discharge aprons where waters are several decimetres deep. With mineral precipitation, channels are filled and become shallow, producing discoid pisoliths and crusts. In shallow waters and on distal aprons only small pisolith gravels form. As spring pools fill with deposits, their locations shift laterally; new pisoliths form elsewhere or precipitation may recommence on older abandoned pisoliths.  相似文献

The significance of stromatolites as depositional environmental indicators and the underlying causes of lamination in the lacustrine realm are poorly understood. Stromatolites in a ca 600 m thick Miocene succession in the Ebro Basin are good candidates to shed light on these issues because they are intimately related to other lacustrine carbonate and sulphate facies, grew under variable environmental conditions and show distinct lamination patterns. These stromatolites are associated with wave‐related, clastic‐carbonate laminated limestones. Both facies consist of calcite and variable amounts of dolomite. Thin planar stromatolites (up to 10 cm thick and less than 6 m long) occurred in very shallow water. These stromatolites represented first biological colonization after: (i) subaerial exposure in the palustrine environment (i.e. at the beginning of deepening cycles); or (ii) erosion due to surge action, then coating very irregular surfaces on laminated limestones (i.e. through shallowing or deepening cycles). Sometimes they are associated with evaporative pumping. Stratiform stromatolites (10 to 30 cm high and tens of metres long) and domed stromatolites (10 to 30 cm high and long) developed in deeper settings, between the surge periods that produced hummocky cross‐stratification and horizontal lamination offshore. Changes in stromatolite lamina shape, and thus in the growth forms through time, can be attributed to changes in water depth, whereas variations in lamina continuity are linked to water energy and sediment supply. Growth of the stromatolites resulted from in situ calcite precipitation and capture of minor amounts of fine‐grained carbonate particles. Based on texture, four types of simple laminae are distinguished. The simple micrite and microsparite laminae can be grouped into light and dark composite laminae, which represent, respectively, high and low Precipitation/Evaporation ratio periods. Different lamination patterns provide new ideas for the interpretation of microbial laminations as a function of variations in climate‐dependent parameters (primarily the Precipitation/Evaporation ratio) over variable timescales.  相似文献

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami deposited a sheet of sand with surficial bedforms at the Andaman coast of Thailand. Here we show the recognition of bedforms and the key internal sedimentary structures as criteria of the tsunami supercritical flow condition. The presence of well‐preserved capping bedforms implied a dominant tsunami inflow. Sets of internal sedimentary structures including parallel lamination, seaward and landward inclined‐laminations, and downstream dipping laminae indicated antidune structures that were generated by a supercritical flow current in a depositional stage during the inflow. A set of seaward dipping cross‐laminations containing sand with mud drape on the surface of one depositional layer are a unique indication of an outflow structure. A majority of deposits show normal grading, but in some areas, localized reverse grading was also observed. The recognition of these capping bedforms and determination of the internal sedimentary structures provides new key criteria to help derive a better understanding of tsunami flow conditions.  相似文献

Oligocene oncoids from the lacustrine Süβwasserschichten of the Mainz Basin exhibit a pustular surface and a characteristic cavity on their undersides, which gave rise to their designation as ‘swallow nests’. Oncoids grew in situ, under low-energy conditions during a pause in sedimentation. Three features indicate that they were never overturned: (1) oncoids can be placed in a stable position on a smooth surface; (2) laminae, which are mostly concentric around the entire oncoids, display polar thickenings on the upper side during all growth stages of oncoids; (3) the depression is always situated on the stable side of oncoids. Development of this cavity is favoured by unionid shells, in the stable position, serving as oncoid nuclei, but occurs also under flat nuclei. It is interpreted as a product of reduced growth of cyanobacteria due to oligophotic conditions, on a fine-grained substrate, and is considered as diagnostic of the in situ growth of oncoids. Oncoid cortices are mainly formed by a Scytonema-like cyanobacterium, whose carbonaceous organic remnants are occasionally preserved. Growth stages of individual oncoids were image-processed and compared by means of shape parameters. Due to optimum growth conditions, cyanobacteria try to occupy the entire available space; hence, oncoids tend to achieve a spherical form even during in situ growth. Renewed background sedimentation triggered the formation of pustular surfaces and finally caused the cessation of cyanobacterial growth.  相似文献

A laminated and slumped limestone bed from the Carboniferous Limestone of Derbyshire, known as the Rosewood Marble, is described in detail. The laminations comprise alternations of micrite and dolomite, the dolomite laminae originally being fine grainstones. The bed was deposited on a slope and slipping and sliding gave rise to tensional features such as pull-apart structures and compressional features such as slump folds. Evidence suggests that the palaeoslope was inclined towards the south-southeast and caused by synsedimentary movements of the Longstone Edge monocline and/or the Priestcliffe syncline. Diagenetic features described include cementation, dolomitization, calcite pseudomorphs after replacement anhydrite and silicification.  相似文献

Abstract Core BAP96‐CP, sampled from the deepest part of the Bay of La Paz, Gulf of California, has been analysed sedimentologically taking into account regional climate and oceanography. Laminated sediments at the bottom of the bay are essentially not bioturbated by benthic fauna. A subanoxic condition (O2 < 0·2 mL L?1) inhibits the proliferation of benthic fauna. Within the bay, the relative abundances of terrigenous and biogenic inputs change periodically. The terrigenous input is greater than the biogenic input and apparently experiences larger fluctuations. The terrigenous input dominates in dark laminae, whereas the biogenic input mostly occurs in light laminae. Thus, it is assumed that, down the core, the alternation of dark and light laminae represents cycles in the extent of dilution of the biogenic input by terrigenous input. The terrigenous input into the Bay of La Paz is mostly regulated by pluvial runoff. Thus, its temporal fluctuation follows the periods shown by the regional pluvial regime, particularly the 11·2 year period. This is equal to the frequency of sunspot cycles.  相似文献

The Codocedo Limestone Member is a thin but laterally persistent lacustrine sequence within the red beds of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Quebrada Monardes Formation, in the Atacama region of northern Chile. The thick succession of clastic terrigenous sediments of the Quebrada Monardes Formation was deposited in an arid to semi-arid environment. Sedimentary facies are indicative of deposition of aeolian dunes, alluvial fans and braided streams, playa-lake mudflats, and saline lakes and coastal lagoons. The strata accumulated in a N-S elongated extensional back-arc basin on the landward side of an active volcanic arc. The 3 m thick Codocedo Limestone Member marks striking facies changes within the Quebrada Monardes Formation. It is underlain by a thick sequence of conglomerates and sandstones, deposited on alluvial fans. The limestone itself is characterized by evaporite minerals and laterally continuous laminations, indicative of deposition by vertical accretion in a perennial saline lake. The overlying siltstones and fine sandstones contain geodes and gypsum pseudomorphs and were deposited on playa-lake mudflats. The limestone therefore represents a relatively short period of lacustrine deposition within an essentially terrigenous succession. The lake was possibly formed quite suddenly, for example by damming of the basin by a lava flow. Sedimentation in the perennial lake was predominantly cyclical. Seasonal planktonic algal blooms produced millimetre-scale laminations. Interbedded with these laminites are centimetre-scale beds of evaporitic gypsum, anhydrite and minor halite. The evaporite minerals have been largely replaced by calcite, chalcedony and quartz. The centimetre-scale cycles may have resulted from periodic freshwater input into the lake. After a period of about 3000 yr the lake dried up, to be replaced by extensive playa-lake mudflats. The Codocedo Limestone Member possibly formed a plane of detachment during an early Tertiary phase of E-W directed regional compression. The limestones and evaporites were folded and extensively brecciated. This deformation probably resulted from simple shear along the bedding plane of the relatively weak evaporite minerals prior to their replacement by calcite and quartz.  相似文献

Newly discovered carbonate laminites are described from the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation (Middle Jurassic, Britain). These occur in the upper peloidal unit of fining-upward rhythms which comprise much of the lagoonal lower Lincolnshire Limestone in south Lincolnshire. The flat, millimetre-scale laminations are of three types: (1) alternating peloid-rich, peloid-poor laminae; (2) alternating bioclastic and peloidal laminae; (3) alternating bioclastic and micritic laminae. In all three types, small-scale cross-laminated sets (usually < 40 mm thick) also occur. The laminite horizons are usually < 150 mm thick and have, in some cases, been traced laterally for ~100 m. The close analogy of these carbonate laminites with siliciclastic counterparts favours their interpretation as tidal rhythmites, mechanically deposited in a low intertidal/shallow subtidal setting. The associated sedimentary features and overall stratigraphic-sedimentologic position of the deposits support this conclusion. According to the literature, mechanically deposited as opposed to algally induced carbonate laminites are rare outside the supratidal realm. Possible reasons for the real or imagined scarcity of intertidal/ subtidal carbonate laminites in ancient sedimentary regimes are discussed.  相似文献

湖南石门杨家坪下寒武统杷榔组第三段主要为一套深灰色、灰绿色页状至薄层含粉砂水云母泥(页)岩与泥质粉砂岩夹透镜状、条带状粉砂岩,其沉积环境为斜坡环境。中上部透镜状、条带状粉砂岩中交错层理极为发育,纹层倾向既有沿斜坡向上和向下双向倾斜的,也有沿斜坡向下或沿斜坡向上单向倾斜的,它们不应是等深流沉积或浊流沉积,而应为内波、内潮汐产生的沿斜坡上下交替流动所形成的。笔者对寒武系内波、内潮汐沉积做了首次研究。  相似文献

ABSTRACT Ooids occurring in the shallow-water Purbeckian carbonate sediments of the Jura mountains can be grouped into six types. Gradations from one type to another and coexistence of the various types are common. Type 1 ooids are small and well rounded. They display fine concentric micritic laminae. In many cases their cortices are dissolved and replaced by void-filling spar. Microsparitic neomorphic replacement occurs locally. Type 2 ooids are large and have irregular shapes. They show fine micritic laminae and occasional layers of fine-radial crystals. They commonly evolve into oncoids. Ooids of type 3 display many fine-radial cortical laminae and are patchily micritized. They are medium in size and mostly well rounded. This type of ooid may pass into large, irregularly shaped coated grains. Type 4 ooids have 1 to 4 cortical laminae with a fine-radial structure and patchy micritization. They are medium in size and well rounded. Type 5 ooids have only one lamina with a coarse-radial structure. They are small and well rounded. Associated are spherical grains containing bundles of elongate crystals. Ooids of type 6 show superpositions of two or more different, radial and or fine micritic laminae. The cortical structure may also change laterally in the same lamina. The preferential dissolution of type 1 ooid cortices to form oomoulds indicates a primary composition of unstable carbonate. Sedimentological features and comparison with modern ooid occurrences point to formation on high-energy sandbars in normal-marine waters. Type 2 ooids grew in marine-lagoonal environments with quiet water and abundant cyanobacteria. The radially structured ooid cortices of types 3, 4 and 5 show no dissolution features. This implies that they were originally composed of stable carbonates, or that an unstable carbonate phase was transformed into a stable one at an early stage of diagenesis. Type 3 ooids occur together with marine faunas and indicate high water energy. Ooids of type 4 and type 5 originated probably from relatively quiet water of variable salinity. Coexistence of different ooid types and mixed forms of type 6 implies gradual or rapid changes in hydrodynamic, geochemical and microbiological conditions which were a feature of the Purbeckian depositional environments.  相似文献

贵阳地区下三叠统是一个完整的碳酸盐岩层序(相当于三级旋回层序).该层序中的凝缩段由深色薄层(单层厚0.5cm~1cm)的泥晶灰岩和泥质条带灰岩组成.凝缩段中产丰富的遗迹化右.该遗迹群落为:Cochlichnus,Cosmorhaphe,Chondrites,Gordia,Huaxich-nus,Oldhamia,Phycosiphon.Protopaleodictyon,Pinnatpedus,Mammillichnus,Neonerites和生物扰动构造.遗迹化石组合与Nereites遗迹相相似。此外,文本还讨论了此遗迹群落的形成原因。  相似文献

Hurricane washover fans from the Texas Gulf Coast exhibit large-scale rhomboid bed forms developed on washover deposits of fine sand with varying shell content. Washover processes inferred from aerial photographs, storm characteristics, and physical settings suggest that these bed forms are the product of (1) storm surge flooding or (2) high wind shear stress. Multiple bed forms, including large-scale rhombs, are responsible for sedimentary structures preserved in washover deposits. Proximal channels exhibit scour and fill sequences capped by mud drapes. Mid-channel fan deposits also have scour bases marked by shell lags which are overlain by horizontal laminations and foreset and backset laminae. Distal fan sediments are relatively shell free and are interbedded with tidal flat deposits characterized by bioturbated, alternating sand and mud laminae. Rhomboidal patterns can form on the free surface of water in response to five processes: (1) wave interference from two externally independent sources, (2) wave interference from refraction of a single set of wave fronts, (3) standing oblique waves caused by bed roughness elements, (4) standing oblique waves formed at channel boundaries and channel transitions, and (5) wind stress. Geologically, standing oblique waves from unidirectional nearly supercritical flow is probably the most important process in rhomboid bed form development.  相似文献

Extensive occurrences of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous aeolian sandstones form part of a thick sequence of terrigenous red beds in northern Chile. These sediments accumulated in a N-S-elongated intermontane back-arc basin on the landward side of an active volcanic chain. This volcanic chain, which was produced by subduction beneath the continental margin, provided the source of almost all the clastic sediments. The aeolian sands formed isolated dune fields covering only part of the depositional basin at any one time. Cosets of cross-bedded sandstone up to 40 m thick represent the deposits of linear draas. Cross-bedded sets, which average between 0.5 and 1 m in thickness, were produced by the migration of small dunes down and along the gentle lee slopes of the draas. The majority of foreset laminations in the cross-bedded sets are thin, parallel and persistent. They are the product of the lateral migration of dunes which developed oblique to the prevailing winds. Foreset laminations dip at low angles (averaging 19°), well below the angle of repose of dry sand. Most of the laminations originated by tractional processes, rather than by grainflow (avalanching) or grainfall. This conclusion indicates that the dunes were gently undulating with no slip faces. The orientation of the direction of maximum dip of foreset laminations does not provide a reliable indicator of the palaeowind direction. Although individual sets or cosets commonly show a unidirectional pattern, significant variations have been recorded between sets of the same age at nearby locations and vertically between one coset and the next. Variations in vertical sections were produced by the superimposition of draas with different orientations.  相似文献
