We have grouped observed type III solar bursts according to the discrete frequencies of observation in the kilometric wavelength range. For each group we have obtained the bursts' frequency of occurrence as a function of the heliographic longitude of the associated optical flares. We found that flares occurring east of a certain cutoff longitude do not produce bursts observable near the earth below a given frequency. The cutoff on the west is determined by observational limitation for flares beyond the limb. The mean longitude and the extreme eastern end of the longitude distribution both shift to the west as the radio frequency decreases. We interpret these findings in terms of radio wave propagation effects and curved trajectories of the bursts' exciter particles.

The RAE (Radio Astronomy Explorer) satellite observed enormous numbers of type III radio bursts at hectometric wavelengths from 13 to 25 August in 1968. The drift rate of these bursts reached a maximum around the middle of 20 August. This means that the source responsible for these bursts gradually moved on the solar disk in association with the rotation of the sun. During this period, there were two large active sunspot groups, MacMath Nos. 9593 and 9597, which were located in the southern hemisphere and adjacent to each other. By examining the observational data on solar flares, type I noise storm activity and energetic electron flux increases, it is shown that the active region, MacMath No. 9597 is responsible for the generation of these type III radio bursts. The relation between type III bursts producing electron beams and type I noise activity is briefly discussed and a model of this active region is qualitatively described.NAS-NRC Associate with NASA.

In association with solar flares accompanying type IV radio bursts of U-shaped spectrum, solar cosmic rays (MeV) and energetic electrons (keV) were generated. After acceleration, they were first stored in or near the flare regions and then gradually emitted into outer space. It seems that the streams of keV electrons generated the continuum radio emissions from metric to hectometric frequencies while passing through the outer coronal regions.

Low-energy (2–19 keV) impulsive electron events observed in interplanetary space have been traced back to the Sun, using their interplanetary type III radiation and metric/decimetric radio-spectrograms. For the first time we are able to study the highest frequencies and thus the radio signatures closest to the source region. All the selected impulsive solar electron events have been found to be associated with an interplanetary type III burst. This allows to time the particle events at the 2 MHz plasma level and identify the associated coronal radio emissions. Except for 5 out of 27 cases, the electron events were found to be associated with a coronal type III burst in the metric wavelength range. The start frequency yields a lower limit to the density in the acceleration region. We also search for narrow-band spikes at the start of the type III bursts. In about half of the observed cases we find metric spikes or enhancements of type I bursts associated with the start of the electron event. If interpreted as the plasma emission of the acceleration process, the observed average frequency of spikes suggests a source density of the order of 3×108 cm–3 consistent with the energy cut-off observed.

A high-speed, halo-type coronal mass ejection (CME), associated with a GOES M4.6 soft X-ray flare in NOAA AR 0180 at S12W29 and an EIT wave and dimming, occurred on 9 November 2002. A complex radio event was observed during the same period. It included narrow-band fluctuations and frequency-drifting features in the metric wavelength range, type III burst groups at metric – hectometric wavelengths, and an interplanetary type II radio burst, which was visible in the dynamic radio spectrum below 14 MHz. To study the association of the recorded solar energetic particle (SEP) populations with the propagating CME and flaring, we perform a multi-wavelength analysis using radio spectral and imaging observations combined with white-light, EUV, hard X-ray, and magnetogram data. Velocity dispersion analysis of the particle distributions (SOHO and Wind in situ observations) provides estimates for the release times of electrons and protons. Our analysis indicates that proton acceleration was delayed compared to the electrons. The dynamics of the interplanetary type II burst identify the burst source as a bow shock created by the fast CME. The type III burst groups, with start times close to the estimated electron-release times, trace electron beams travelling along open field lines into the interplanetary space. The type III bursts seem to encounter a steep density gradient as they overtake the type II shock front, resulting in an abrupt change in the frequency drift rate of the type III burst emission. Our study presents evidence in support of a scenario in which electrons are accelerated low in the corona behind the CME shock front, while protons are accelerated later, possibly at the CME bow shock high in the corona.

Detailed statistics and analysis of 264 type III bursts observed with the 625–1500 MHz spectrograph during the 23rd solar cycle (from July 2000 to April 2003) are carried out in the present article. The main statistical results are similar to those of microwave type III bursts presented in the literature cited, such as the correlation between type III bursts and flares, polarization, duration, frequency drift rate (normal and reverse slopes), distribution of type III bursts and frequency bandwidth. At the same time, the statistical results also point out that the average values of the frequency drift rates and degrees of polarization increase with the increase in frequency and the average value of duration decreases with the increase in frequency. Other statistical results show that the starting frequencies of the type III bursts are mainly within the range from 650 to 800 MHz, and most type III bursts have an average bandwidth of 289 MHz. The distributions imply that the electron acceleration and the place of energy release are within a limited decimetric range. The characteristics of the narrow bandwidth possibly involve the magnetic configuration at decimetric wavelengths, the location of electron acceleration in the magnetic field nearto the main flare, the relevant runaway or trapped electrons, or the coherent radio emission produced by some secondary shock waves. In addition, the number of type III bursts with positive frequency drift rates is almost equal to that with negative frequency drift rates. This is probably explained by the hypothesis that an equal number of electron beams are accelerated upwards and downwards within the range of 625 to 1500 MHz. The radiation mechanism of type III bursts at decimetric wavelengths probably includes these microwave and metric mechanisms and the most likely cause of the coherent plasma radiation are the emission processes of the electron cyclotron maser.

We report the results of 1966, 1968, and 1969 polarization measurements of solar type III radio noise bursts made by recording the output of two orthogonally polarized receiving channels and subsequent digital processing of selected data. The processed data yield total intensity, degree of polarization, ellipticity, and polarization ellipse orientation at 1 second intervals. The measurements are made in a 100 Hz bandwith to minimize the influence of the propagating medium on the measurements. The mean degree of polarization was found to be about 65% in contrast to previous studies which indicated that type III events were more weakly polarized. By assuming that type III bursts are flare related we study the polarization characteristics of type III bursts as a function of the solar longitude of the related flares. The relation between type III event polarization characteristics and flare importance is also investigated. The significance of polarization measurements in studies of solar radio events is pointed out and suggestions for further theoretical research are given.

The low frequency array (LOFAR) radiotelescope will be a powerful instrument for answering fundamental, unresolved scientific questions concerning solar system radio phenomena and related emissions from nearby stellar systems. This paper reviews the phenomena, emission mechanisms, open scientific questions, and LOFAR's capabilities. LOFAR will detect metric solar radio bursts in the corona and interplanetary medium, out to distances of order 10 solar radii, as well as Jovian radio emissions. Arguments are given that LOFAR may be sufficiently sensitive to detect stellar analoges of solar type II and III bursts, and may detect cyclotron-maser emissions from extra-solar planets. LOFAR may also aid space weather research, by passively detecting coronal mass ejections (CMEs) via scintillation and Faraday rotation effects, or by detecting radar signals bounced off CMEs and coronal density structures if a suitable solar radar is developed.

The phenomena observed at the Sun have a variety of unique radio signatures that can be used to diagnose the processes in the solar atmosphere. The insights provided by radio observations are further enhanced when they are combined with observations from space-based telescopes. This Topical collection demonstrates the power of combination methodology at work and provides new results on i) type I solar radio bursts and thermal emission to study active regions; ii) type II and IV bursts to better understand the structure of coronal mass ejections; and iii) non-thermal gyro-synchrotron and/or type III bursts to improve the characterisation of particle acceleration in solar flares. The ongoing improvements in time, frequency, and spatial resolutions of ground-based telescopes reveal new levels in the complexity of solar phenomena and pose new questions.

Storms of type III solar radio bursts observed from 5.4 to 0.2 MHz, indicate the quasicontinuous production of type III events observable for a half solar rotation but persisting in some cases for well over a complete rotation. The characteristics of these storms, including the dependance of occurrence and apparent drift rates on the disc position of the associated active region are discussed. The drift rate dependance is shown to be a consequence of the propagation time of emission from the source to the observer. The occurrence rate of a burst every 10 sec observed near CMP implies that if this level of activity persists, then about a quarter of a million exciter packets are released into the interplanetary plasma during a complete rotation. Storm bursts are less intense than most isolated type III's and occur over a more limited frequency range. There appears to be a very close relation between these storms and decametric continuum.

The existence of a class of fast-drift, shock-associated (SA), kilometric radio bursts which occur at the time of metric type II emission and which are not entirely the kilometric continuation of metric type III bursts has been reported previously (Cane et al., 1981). In this paper, we establish unambiguous SA event criteria for the purpose of statistically comparing SA events with conventional kilometric type III bursts. We apply these criteria to all long-duration, fast-drift bursts observed by the ISEE-3 spacecraft during a 28-month interval and find that more than 70% of the events satisfying the criteria are associated with the radio signatures of coronal shocks. If a given event in our sample is associated with a metric type II or type IV burst, it is 13 times more likely to satisfy the SA criteria than an event associated only with metric type III activity. Compared with conventional kilometric type III bursts, the characteristics of these SA events are longer duration, higher maximum intensity, and a larger number of components. Differences in these characteristics for the two classes of events are not sufficient to distinguish all SA events from conventional type III bursts. The consistent lack of reported metric type III activity during the latter part of the candidate events suggests that some of the electrons are accelerated high in the corona, at or near the altitude of the shock.

Using the observed data for wide-band type IV solar radio bursts, the onset time differences between the microwave and metric frequencies and the peak flux intensities of the metric component are analyzed as a function of the longitudinal position of the associated flares on the solar disk. It is shown that this time difference is dependent on the position of the associated flare and that the peak flux intensity reaches maximum when a flare occurs in the region 10 to 40 ° west of the central meridian of the solar disk. These results are explained by taking into account the eastward expansion of magnetic bottles which trap mildly relativistic electrons responsible for type IV bursts. Discussion is given on the relation between these magnetic bottles and shock waves which excite type II radio bursts.NASA Associate with University of Maryland, Astronomy Program.

It is shown that for burst bandwidth B considered in the time-frequency domain, the distribution of w(B −1) is the probability density of radiation of radio emission of a given relative frequency bandwidth, while the distribution w(B) is the density of bursts, arrangement on axis B. Using this remark, we find that solar decimetric spikes and type III bursts, and metric noise storms, have a `radiation probability' approximately 10 times higher for large-bandwidth bursts than for small-bandwidth bursts.

An analysis has been made of type III bursts recorded during a decametric solar storm observed from July 29 to August 16, 1975 with the UTR-2 antenna (Kharkov, IRE Acad. Sci. Ukr. SSR). The bursts were recorded with a dynamic spectrograph and radiometers at 25.0, 20.0, 16.7, and 12.5 MHz. Daily observations have yielded histograms of the type III burst distribution with respect to the frequency drift rate in three subbands between 25.0 and 12.5 MHz. During the middle stage of the storm the drift rate was about twice as high as at the onset and the final stage of the storm. Abrupt changes in the mean frequency drift rate were registered some two to three days after the active region McMath 13790 had come onto the limb and also before it disappeared behind the solar disk. Sudden changes in the drift rates of the type III bursts were accompanied by sudden changes of their mean duration. The rather long burst durations observed at 25.0 MHz at the beginning and the end of the radio storm coincided with such at the twice lower frequency, i.e. 12.5 MHz, during the period when an increased drift rate was observed.Similar variations of type III burst parameters can be interpreted in the framework of the plasma mechanism of burst generation in the corona, assuming that at the middle stage of the storm the bursts observed in the 25.0–12.5 MHz range were emitted at the fundamental whereas when the emitting region was near the limb the bursts received corresponded to the second harmonic of the Langmuir oscillations in the range of 12.5 to 6.25 MHz excited at greater heights.

We present the results of radio telescope UTR-2 observations of solar Type II radio bursts in the 10–30 MHz frequency range. These events possess a fine structure consisting of fast drift sub-bursts similar to Type III bursts. The frequency drift rate of the Type II bursts at decameter wavelengths is smaller than 0.1 MHz s–1. One of these bursts with herringbone structure has a wave-like backbone that almost does not drift. The features of the observed bursts are discussed.

Over 500 days of low-frequency (<1 MHz) radio observations from the IMP-6 spacecraft have been accumulated to produce a two-dimensional map (frequency vs elongation) of solar type III burst occurrences. This map indicates that most solar bursts in this frequency range are observed at the second harmonic of the plasma frequency rather than the fundamental. The map also shows that the solar wind electron density varies as R ?γ , where γ can be somewhat less than 2 to perhaps 3 or higher.
