The paper discusses the results of numerical experiments on response of the Black Sea to the ‘real’ (mean monthly) atmospheric forcing. A new version of the multi-layer quasi-isopycnic model is applied which does not use the rigid-lid approximation and allows for a salt flux through the sea surface. Ways of obtaining quantitative agreement between the calculated data due only to the external forcing, without invokingin situ temperature/salinity observations are suggested. Studies of mesoscaleT, S characteristics of deep waters in the Black Sea carried out during 1978–1988 are generalized. Transformed lower Bosphorus waters are spread in the layer from 400 m to the bottom following density isosurfaces corresponding to this water. This is the way that interlayers ofT, S inversions are formed; their vertical thickness reaches 100–200 m in the Anatolian flow. The streamwise decrease of theT, S maxima and the location of isotherms in the cross-sections of these tongues permit the estimation of the order of the values of the coefficients of the vertical and horizontal turbulent diffusion.Translated by Mikhail M. The paper considers the thermohaline structure of Black Sea abyssal and near-bottom waters on the basis of exact measurements recorded in recent years under the HYDROBLACK and COMSBLACK international projects. The surface water mass (along with the cold mixed layer), the intermediate, abyssal, and near-bottom masses are identified. The upper boundary of deep waters is defined as a depth level where the density ratio decreases down to 0.1 This depth roughly corresponds to the 900–1100 m depth levels. Furthermore, the paper provides potential temperature and salinily values in the near-bottom layer, with an error of, respectively, 0.002°C and 0.002‰, at most. Translated by Vladimir A. The paper considers the correlation between the variability of river discharges in the northwestern Black Sea and water salinity (from 1962 to 1994). As the most complete series, we have chosen salinity data collected at the port of Odessa. The dominant oscillations in the intra-annual variability of river discharges (Danube, Dniester, Dnieper, Yuzhny Bug) and salinity attain about 2–3 months and one year, respectively. In the inter-annual variability of river discharges and water salinity, cyclicities equal to about 4–6 months and 9–12 years, respectively, have been identified. Through analysing the inter-annual variations, an inversely proportional dependence has been found between the overall river discharges and salinity (between discharges in April and salinities in May, the correlation coefficient has amounted to −0.61). For each river, we have obtained the following dependences: for Odessa-Dniester, −0.72; and for Odessa-Danube, −0.65. Translated by Vladimir A. Puchkin.  相似文献

Basin-wide distributions of normalized spectral radiances averaged over different time periods were plotted based on the estimates of the average radiance for 20 × 20 km squares in 482 digital images of the Black Sea obtained with a SeaWiFS color scanner in 1998–2004. Significant distinctions of the annual average distributions in the amplitude, localization, and configuration of basin-scale inhomogeneities allowed us to consider these distributions as yearly spectral-radiance portraits of the Black Sea that reflect specific features of the annual behavior of the hydrometeorological conditions over the Black Sea region. Seasonal features of the radiance distributions related to the wind field were discovered. Substantial interannual variability in the errors of the standard atmospheric correction algorithm resulting in an underestimation of the shortwave radiances were revealed. It is shown that the river discharge and the stratification of the layer sensed substantially influence the yearly spectral-radiance portraits of the Black Sea.  相似文献

Periods and amplitudes of long-term temperature fluctuations were obtained using the methods of spectral analysis and filtration of secular time series of the air temperature at 13 hydrometeorological stations in the Black Sea region. The prognostic calculations of the long-term air temperature variability are based on the results of processing of time series. The calculations of the air temperature agree with the data of observations. The possibility of the long-term air temperature variability prediction is shown.  相似文献

The spatial, seasonal, and interannual variability of the water’s transparency (Secchi depth) in the Sea of Azov is studied using the database of long term transparency measurements for the 1922–2009 period and relevant materials on the meteorological, hydrological, and hydrobiological parameters of the environment. We identified four main types of seasonal variability of the water’s transparency depending on the local conditions. The mean values of the Secchi depth are calculated for the different periods, which are distinguished by the differences in the relative role of the water transparency factors associated both with the climatic variations and the human activities.  相似文献

The rise of the waters of the main pycnocline in the central part of the western cyclonic gyre at the end of the winter in the 1960s–1970s and their deepening in the eastern cyclonic gyre from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s were revealed on the basis of archival hydrologic data obtained on the standard sections of the Black Sea in 1957–1992. It is shown that, simultaneously, the waters of the pycnocline descended in the Sevastopol anticyclone and rose in the Yalta and Batumi anticyclones. These tendencies indicate that the water circulation intensified in the region of the western cyclonic gyre (off the southwestern coast of the Crimea) and weakened in the vicinity of the eastern cyclonic gyre at the end of the winter season in the 1960s–1970s and in the 1960s–1980s, respectively. It is shown on the basis of NCEP reanalysis data and archival hydrometeorological data that all major circulation factors, such as a decrease in the cyclonic vorticity in the wind field during the winter season, changes in its spatial structure, an increase in the river discharge, and a decrease in the turbulent heat fluxes at the Black Sea surface, affect the energy redistribution between the gyres. A quasi-periodic (wave) spatial-temporal structure of the intrannual variability of the climatic fields of the seawater geostrophic motion within the constant halocline in the Black Sea (75–300m) has been revealed on the basis of generalized archival data on hydrological observations in the main Black Sea current (MBSC) near the Crimea and Caucasus. The variability with annual and semi-annual periods has the character of standing quasi-geostrophic waves at 2- to 4-month periods which become progressive as the direction of their propagation changes during the year. The energy characteristics for the forms of variability revealed are discussed and interpreted from the viewpoint of gradient-eddy waves and the hydrodynamic instability of the MBSC.Translated by Mikhail M. By using the archival hydrological data for 1955–1998, we analyze the trends of deep-water thermohaline characteristics of the Black Sea and their interannual and decadal variability. It was discovered that the level of salinity increased at depths greater than 1000 m in the west part of the sea from the mid-1950-s till the early 1980s and the opposite trend was observed for the next 15–20 yr. The average rate of increase in the deep-water salinity between 1960 and 1980 and its decrease after 1980 was equal to 0.05‰ per 20 yr. These facts demonstrate that the water exchange through Bosporus was intensified for the first 25 yr of the analyzed period and weakened for the next 20 yr. Statistical characteristics and the parameters of the temporal variability of currents are analysed using data on current measurements conducted by five moored autonomous buoy stations over Bulgaria's shelf. Estimates of the specific contribution to the variability of synoptic (60%) and mesoscale (40%) oscillations are derived. The qualitative spectrum of the currents is defined, constituted by synoptic oscillations, short-period synoptic oscillations, inertial oscillations, and internal waves. Estimates of periods and oscillation amplitudes are also derived. The kinetic energy of the currents is calculated and the specific contribution of the energy of different-scale oscillations and their interrelations are determined.Translated by V. The chemical speciation of Cu and Zn was investigated by voltammetric titration methods in the surface waters (10 m) of the western Black Sea during an Istanbul–Sevastopol cruise conducted in November 1998. Supporting parameters (temperature (T), salinity (S), pH, alkalinity (Alk), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and dissolved and particulate 234Th) were obtained in order to distinguish hydrographic features against involvement of the metals in biogeochemical processes. In the Turkish continental slope region, the cruise track intersected a narrow vein of colder water originating on the western shelf. The core of this cold water vein was characterised by a relatively low salinity, higher specific alkalinity and higher metal (especially Cu) and metal-binding ligand concentrations.A very large portion of Cu (93–99.8%) and Zn (82–97%) was organically complexed. The degree of complexation was highest in shelf waters and lowest in the central gyre. Titration data for Cu were modelled by two classes of organic binding ligands characterised by (CL1=3–12 nM, log K1′=13.1–13.9) and (CL2=20–70 nM, log K2′=9.4–11.2). These ligands occurred mainly in the ‘dissolved’ phase, as defined by 0.4-μm filtration. The stronger Cu-binding ligand seemed to be produced in situ in response to Cu concentration, whereas the weaker Cu-binding ligand appeared to be derived from terrestrial sources and/or reducing shelf sediments. Titration results for Zn were generally represented by one class of ligands (CL1=8–23 nM, log K1′=9.4–10.2), which were almost uniformly distributed between the ‘dissolved’ (78±8%) and the particulate phase (22±8%). The concentration of these strong Zn-binding ligands showed a very good correlation with SPM (r2=0.64), which improved when the dissolved ligands alone were considered (r2=0.78). It is hypothesised that these ligands were produced in situ by the bacterial breakdown of particulate organic matter.  相似文献

Meiobenthos (harpacticoids), microzoobenthos (ciliates) and microphytobenthos (epipelic diatoms and dinoflagellates) were collected during July 1999 using nested sampling at the scales of decimeters, meters and tens of meters. Similarity between samples decreased rapidly with distance for all groups, but unicellular organisms were distributed more heterogeneously at a large scale than meiobenthos. Microspatial (decimeter scale) variations contributed the main part of total variation of harpacticoid abundance, while the large-scale differences were less important. On the contrary, these differences yielded the main variability for ciliates and especially for microalgae. The relative role of temporal variability decreased steadily for the smaller-sized organisms. Stability of spatial structure at multiple scales was estimated by Mantel correlations, Rm, between the successive similarity matrices. For harpacticoids, the results showed intensive and chaotic turnover of microaggregations. For microbenthos, rather high Rm values were found in smaller scales: tens of meters—for ciliates, from meters on—for dinoflagellates, and already from decimeter scale and on—for diatoms. Thus, the general spatial pattern (that is the arrangement of micropatches) was more stable for microbenthos than for meiobenthos. Temporal variability of species structure, in contrast to the spatial one, was highest for the smallest organisms. Correlations between size groups, using both total abundance and species composition, differed for microspatial, meso-spatial or temporal distribution. At the microscale, there were slight but significant negative correlations between harpacticoids and microalgae. Meso-scale distribution of dinoflagellates and diatoms differed significantly due to their different preferences in sediment properties. Ciliates were strongly positively correlated with dinoflagellates. At the microscale, each group had an individual community pattern. At larger scales, species composition of diatoms, ciliates and harpacticoids varied in space in coordination, while dinoflagellates behaved independently. It is hypothesized that body size determines the spatio-temporal scale of the perception of environmental heterogeneity.  相似文献

As part of the Russian-Ukrainian program “The Black Sea as a Simulation Model of the Ocean,” the monitoring of the marine environment is considered using modern measuring systems. On the basis of historical and contemporary observation data, we estimate the spatial and temporal scales of dominant processes in the Black Sea. We describe the main measuring systems used to monitor the structure and variability of the hydrophysical fields. The spatio-temporal variabilities in sea surface temperature (SST) were analyzed using a time series of MODIS datasets for four separate regions in the Yellow Sea (YS) that were located along a north-south axis. The space variant temporal anomaly was further decomposed using an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) for estimating spatially distributed SST. The monthly SSTs showed similar temporal patterns in each region, which ranged from 2.4°C to 28.4°C in the study years 2011 to 2013, with seasonal cycles being stronger at the higher latitudes and weaker at the lower latitudes. Spatially, although there were no significant differences among the four regions (p < 0.05) in any year, the geographical distribution of SST was characterized by an obvious gradient whereby SST decreased along the north-south axis. The monthly thermal difference among regions was largest in winter since the SST in the southeast was mainly affected by the Yellow Sea Warm Currents. The EOF1 mode accounted for 56% of the total spatial variance and exhibited a warming signal during the study period. The EOF2 mode accounted for 8% of the total variance and indicated the warm current features in the YS. The EOF3 mode accounted for 6% of the total variance and indicated the topographical features. The methodology used in this study demonstrated the spatio-temporal variabilities in the YS.  相似文献

The concentrations of137Cs and134Cs were measured using the sorption method in the waters of the Black Sea during 1986–1987. An inhomogeneous character of the contamination of the surface waters in the Black Sea due to the Chernobyl disaster is shown. The subsequent migration and redistribution of caesium radionuclides in the various seasons of the year were studied. The amount of137Cs and134Cs in the upper 50 m layer was estimated. The results of measuring the concentration of caesium radionuclides in the near-water atmospheric layer over the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea in 1986–1987 are also reported.Translated by Mikhail M.
