Observed hot spots on neutron stars are often associated with polar caps heated by the backflow of energetic electrons or positrons from accelerators on bundles of open magnetic field lines. Three effects are discussed that may be relevant to formation of hot spots and their areas. (1) The area of a polar cap is proportional to the ratio of the star’s surface dipole field to the local field at the polar cap. Because the field is coupled to the evolving spin of the superfluid core of the star, this ratio can depend on the stellar spin and its history. (2) The hot emission area may appear smaller to a distant observer when emitted X-rays propagate through electron-positron plasma created in the magnetosphere. The X-rays then change their energy spectrum because of cyclotron resonant scattering by pairs. (3) Hot spots may form on the star’s surface as a result of crust motions that are driven by the pull of core flux tubes pinned to the crust. Such motions twist the footprints of closed magnetic loops of the magnetosphere and induce an electric current in the loop, which will heat those footprints. 相似文献

We model stellar differential rotation based on the mean-field theory of fluid dynamics. DR is mainly driven by Reynolds stress, which is anisotropic and has a non-diffusive component because the Coriolis force affects the convection pattern. Likewise, the convective heat transport is not strictly radial but slightly tilted towards the rotation axis, causing the polar caps to be slightly warmer than the equator. This drives a flow opposite to that caused by differential rotation and so allows the system to avoid the Taylor-Proudman state. Our model reproduces the rotation pattern in the solar convection zone and allows predictions for other stars with outer convection zones. The surface shear turns out to depend mainly on the spectral type and only weakly on the rotation rate. We present results for stars of spectral type F which show signs of very strong differential rotation in some cases. Stars just below the mass limit for outer convection zones have shallow convection zones with short convective turnover times. We find solar-type rotation and meridional flow patterns at much shorter rotation periods and horizontal shear much larger than on the solar surface, in agreement with recent observations. A model for the angular momentum transfer within the convection zone of a rapidly rotating star is introduced and applied to the analysis of recent observations of temporal fluctuations of the differential rotation on the young late-type stars AB Doradus (AB Dor) and LQ Hydrae (LQ Hya). Under the hypothesis that the mean magnetic field produced by the stellar dynamo rules the angular momentum exchanges and that the angular velocity depends only on the distance s from the rotation axis and the time, the minimum azimuthal Maxwell stress | Bs B φ | , averaged over the convection zone, is found to range from ∼0.04 to ∼0.14 T2 . If the poloidal mean magnetic field B s is of the order of 0.01 T, as indicated by the Zeeman–Doppler imaging maps of those stars, then the azimuthal mean field B φ can reach an intensity of several teslas, which significantly exceeds equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy. Such strong fields can account also for the orbital period modulation observed in cataclysmic variables and RS Canum Venaticorum systems with a main-sequence secondary component. Moreover, the model allows us to compute the kinetic energy dissipation rate during the maintenance of the differential rotation. Only in the case of the largest surface shear observed on LQ Hya may the dissipated power exceed the stellar luminosity, but the lack of a sufficient statistic on the occurrence of such episodes of large shear does not allow us to estimate their impact on the energy budget of the convection zone. 相似文献

It is shown how to set up a mathematically elegant and fully relativistic superfluid model that can provide a realistic approximation (neglecting small anisotropies due to crust solidity, magnetic fields, etc., but allowing for the regions with vortex pinning) of the global structure of a rotating neutron star, in terms of just two independently moving constituents. One of these represents the differentially rotating neutron superfluid, while the other part represents the combination of all the other ingredients, including the degenerate electrons, the superfluid protons in the core, and the ions in the crust, the electromagnetic interactions of which will tend to keep them locked together in a state of approximately rigid rotation. Order of magnitude estimates are provided for relevant parameters such as the resistive drag coefficient. 相似文献

Based on Lee-Wick's theory of abnormal nuclear state, the possible existence of a new type of neutron stars of abnormal state is discussed. Calculation shows that there may be some stable and/or metastable abnormal neutron stars with M ∼ M⊙. 相似文献

ZAMS models with internal differential rotation are computed for 6.5 M⊙ and 10 M⊙ models with the 2D evolution code ROTORC. Two applications of these models, their pulsational frequencies and deduced locations in the HR diagram, are discussed in order to show how the internal differential rotation could be investigated. Recent spectropolarimetric observations of Ap and Bp stars with improved sensitivity have suggested that most Ap and Bp stars are magnetic with dipolar fields of at least a few hundred gauss. These new estimates suggest that the range of magnetic fluxes found for the majority of magnetic white dwarfs is similar to that of main-sequence Ap–Bp stars, thus strengthening the empirical evidence for an evolutionary link between magnetism on the main sequence and magnetism in white dwarfs. We draw parallels between the magnetic white dwarfs and the magnetic neutron stars and argue that the observed range of magnetic fields in isolated neutron stars ( Bp ∼ 1011 –1015 G) could also be explained if their mainly O-type progenitors have effective dipolar fields in the range of a few gauss to a few kilogauss, assuming approximate magnetic flux conservation with the upper limit being consistent with the recent measurement of a field of Bp ∼ 1100 G for θ Orion C.
In the magnetic field–rotation diagram, the magnetic white dwarfs can be divided into three groups of different origin: a significant group of strongly magnetized slow rotators ( Prot ∼ 50 –100 yr) that have originated from single-star evolution, a group of strongly magnetized fast rotators ( P rot ∼ 700 s) , typified by EUVE J0317–853, that have originated from a merger, and a group of modest rotators ( P rot ∼ hours–days) of mixed origin (single-star and CV-type binary evolution). We propose that the neutron stars may similarly divide into distinct classes at birth , and suggest that the magnetars may be the counterparts of the slowly rotating high-field magnetic white dwarfs. 相似文献

The rotation rates obtained by tracing 124 polar crown filaments are presented in comparison with previous results. Higher filament rotation rate in polar regions was detected and discussed in terms of the various phenomena such as: the projection effect due to the height of measured tracers, the connection of polar filaments with the magnetic field patterns which show an increase of the rotation rate at high latitudes, rigid rotation of polar filaments which form pivot points, and eventual change of the differential rotation law during the cycle. However, when the height correction for an average height of 1% of the solar radius is applied, the filament rotation rate in polar regions decreases. Then the rotation law becomes: () = 14.45 – 0.11 sin2 – 3.69 sin4 (° day–1, sidereal). 相似文献

The transition from a neutron star to a pion-condensed star is investigated in Newtonian hydrodynamics. It is shown that in
a certain range of ultradense equations of state, there occurs a mass ejection with energies comparable with usual supernova
outputs. But the ejected mass is only in the order of 0.02M
⊙.
Therefore, the observable consequences of this transition are not so dramatic as conjectured recently. In a realistic scenario
including a stiff ultradense equation of state and a weak effect of pion condensation the mass ejection disappears.
Additionally the collapse of a stellar core to a neutron star with pion-condensed core is considered. In comparison with a
standard supernova scenario we find only a slightly reduced explosion energy.
Further, the possible consequence of pion condensation during the secular evolution of the bounced core of a collapsing star
to the cool final neutron star is discussed. 相似文献

In the present paper we have considered the problem of determining the equilibrium structure of differentially rotating stars in which the angular velocity of rotation varies both along the axis of rotation and in directions perpendicular to it. Whereas Kippenhahn and Thomas averaging approach has been used to incorporate the rotational effects in the stellar structure equations, Kopal's results on Roche equipotentials have been used to obtain the explicit form of the stellar structure equations, which incorporate the rotational effects up to second order of smallness in the distortion parameters. The method has been used to compute the equilibrium structure of certain differentially rotating polytropes. Certain differentially rotating polytropes. Certain differentially rotating models of the Sun have also been computed by using this approach. 相似文献

Fast rotation of compact stars (at sub-millisecond period) and, in particular, their stability, are sensitive to the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. Recent observations of XTE J1739-285 suggest that it contains a neutron star rotating at 1122 Hz. At such rotational frequency the effects of rotation on star’s structure are significant. We study the interplay of fast rotation, EOS, and gravitational mass of a sub-millisecond pulsar. We discuss the EOS dependence of spin-up to a sub-millisecond period, via mass accretion from a disk in a low-mass X-ray binary. 相似文献

Since their discovery in Voyager images, the origin of the bright polar caps of Ganymede has intrigued investigators. Some models attributed the polar cap formation to thermal migration of water vapor to higher latitudes, while other models implicated plasma bombardment in brightening ice. Only with the arrival of Galileo at Jupiter was it apparent that Ganymede possesses a strong internal magnetic field, which blocks most of the plasma from bombarding the satellite's equatorial region while funneling plasma onto the polar regions. This discovery provides a plausible explanation for the polar caps as related to differences in plasma-induced brightening in the polar and the equatorial regions. In this context, we analyze global color and high resolution images of Ganymede obtained by Galileo, finding a very close correspondence between the observed polar cap boundary and the open/closed field lines boundary obtained from new modeling of the magnetic field environment. This establishes a clear link between plasma bombardment and polar cap brightening. High resolution images show that bright polar terrain is segregated into bright and dark patches, suggesting sputter-induced redistribution and subsequent cold trapping of water molecules. Minor differences between the location of the open/closed field lines boundary and the observed polar cap boundary may be due to interaction of Ganymede with Jupiter's magnetosphere, and our neglect of higher-order terms in modeling Ganymede's internal field. We postulate that leading-trailing brightness differences in Ganymede's low-latitude surface are due to enhanced plasma flux onto the leading hemisphere, rather than darkening of the trailing hemisphere. In contrast to Ganymede, the entire surface of Europa is bombarded by jovian plasma, suggesting that sputter-induced redistribution of water molecules is a viable means of brightening that satellite's surface. 相似文献

In order to specify the structure of a rapidly and differentially rotating gaseous polytrope, we extend Chandrasekhar's perturbation theory to include third-order terms in the perturbation parameter. Formation of the spectra of X-ray pulsars and gamma bursters is investigated. Interpretation of a hard X-ray spectrum of pulsars containing cyclotron lines is feasible on the basis of an isothermal model of a polar spot heated due to accretion to a neutron star. It has been ascertained that in the regions responsible for the formation of continuum radiation and lines the mode polarization is determined by a magnetized vacuum rather than by a plasma. Bearing this in mind, the influence of the magnetic field of a star on the wide wings of the cyclotron line and on its depth is discussed. The part played by the accreting column in the case of strong accretion (1019 el cm–3) needed for long sustaining of the high level of X-rays from a neutron star-pulsar is studied. There occur the gaps in spectrum at frequencies close to the electron gyro-frequency and its harmonics due to the screening of the hot spot by the opaque gyro-resonant layers located within the accreting column. These gaps ensure the formation of cyclotron lines in absorption irrespective of the presence of such lines in the X-ray spectrum of a polar hot spot. The spectra of gamma-bursters recorded by Venus 11 and Venus 12 are interpreted in terms of a two-layer model of a polar hot spot. The estimates are given of the distance to some of the bursters, of the emission measure from a high-temperature layer responsible for continuum radiation and of the dispersion measure of a colder layer forming cyclotron lines in absorption. It is noted that the action of an accreting column leads generally to the radiation depression at frequencies below cyclotron lines. By the observed depression for one of the bursters the electron density of near-star accreting plasma during the burst has been directly estimated (4×10–14 el cm–3). Possible appearance of false cyclotron lines associated with cyclotron scattering in accreting column has been revealed. The problem of measuring the magnetic fields of neutron stars taking account of the gravitational redshift and the quantum recoil effect in emission and in absorption is discussed. Possibilty for a more precise measurement of the magnetic fields of those bursters whose spectrum contains both a cyclotron and an annihilation lines is noted. 相似文献

A model of the behavior of the Martian polar caps is described which incorporates the heating effects of the atmosphere, as well as insolation and conduction. This model is used to try to match the observed regression curves of the polar caps, and it predicts that all the seasonally condensed CO2 will be lost by around the summer solstice. The implication is that the residual caps are composed of water ice which, it is found by further modeling, should be stable during the Martian summers. However, it is also argued that this model may be too simplistic, and that the effects of wind in redistributing the seasonal condensate may lead to sufficient thickness of CO2 in the central polar region to allow the year-long existence of CO2 without significantly changing the retreat characteristics of the cap, and it is, therefore, concluded that at the present, the nature of the residual caps cannot be reliably determined. 相似文献
