The relationships among the monochromatic luminosities at 0.408, 1.4, and 4.85 GHz and the integrated luminosity in the far-infrared (IR) range for galaxies of the liner type (galaxies with low-ionization, narrow-emission regions) are investigated. At all the frequencies there is a close correlation between radio luminosity and IR luminosity for liners. The character of the relationship between the radio and IR luminosities of spiral liners differs from that for spiral normal and spiral Seyfert galaxies. For the latter this relationship is linear in a wide radio range. For spiral liners it may have a nonlinear character. The scatter (standard deviation) around the regression line for the relationship between radio and IR luminosities is considerably larger for spiral liners. The ratio of the emission fluxes in the far-IR range and in the radio range is larger, on the average, for spiral liners than for normal and Seyfert spiral galaxies.  相似文献

The relationships between the monochromatic luminosity of Seyfert galaxies at frequencies of 0.408, 1.49, and 4.85 GHz and the integrated luminosity in the far infrared (IR) range are investigated. At all radio frequencies they are linear and equally close. Some Seyfert galaxies, of morphological types S0/a, E, and S0, have a far higher radio luminosity than Seyfert spiral galaxies with the same IR luminosity. Most of them are found to have compact central radio components. Seyfert spiral galaxies follow the same relationship between radio and IR emission as non-Seyfert spiral galaxies. The relationships between radio and IR luminosity for the individual groups of galaxies of spectral types Sy 1-Sy 1.5 and Sy 1.8-Sy 2 are also linear.  相似文献

It is shown that the radio luminosity of spiral galaxies correlates with their optical surface brightness. Galaxies with high surface brightness have stronger radio emission, on the average. Their ratio of radio and optical luminosities is also higher than for galaxies with lower surface brightness.  相似文献

We estimate the intrinsic luminosities and synchrotron peak frequencies using the derived Doppler factor for a sample of 170 BL Lac objects, of which the synchrotron peak frequency is derived by fitting the SED constructed with the collected multi-band data from the literature. We find that the debeamed radio and optical core luminosities follow the same correlation found for FR I radio galaxies, which is in support of the unification of the BL Lac objects and the FR I galaxies based on orientation. For the debeamed luminosity at the synchrotron peak frequency, we find a significant positive correlation between the luminosity and intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency. This implies that the more powerful sources may have the majority of jet emission at higher frequency. At the synchrotron peak frequency, the intrinsic luminosity and black hole mass show strong positive correlation, while mild correlation is found in the case of jet power, indicating that the more powerful sources may have more massive black holes.  相似文献

The optical luminosities of extragalactic objects with broad emission lines, i.e. quasi-stellar radio sources, radio quiet quasi-stellar objects and Seyfert galaxies are compared. At high luminosities (M < - 23) we find no difference in the form of the optical luminosity function for radio quiet and radio emitting objects; at low luminosities this function is growing steeply only for radio quiet objects, whereas for objects with higher radio indices it remains nearly constant below M = - 22. This may possibly be interpreted as indicating a division between the optically bright “quasars” and the less luminous objects. The quasars with the highest radio index show only a small scatter in optical luminosities and thus yield a well defined Hubble relation.  相似文献

It has been shown that the radio emission properties of spiral galaxies, if the other conditions are the same, are determined rather by the presence of the close neighbours than by space density of galaxies around them. The rate of occurence of radio sources and their radio luminosities among the spiral members of groups of galaxies depend on the projected seperation between them and their nearest neighbour. The shorter this seperation the higher the probability of radio emission.  相似文献

A sample of 2712 radio-luminous galaxies is defined from the second data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by cross-comparing the main spectroscopic galaxy sample with two radio surveys: the National Radio Astronomy Observatories (NRAO) Very Large Array (VLA) Sky Survey (NVSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters (FIRST) survey. The comparison is carried out in a multistage process and makes optimal use of both radio surveys by exploiting the sensitivity of the NVSS to extended and multicomponent radio sources in addition to the high angular resolution of the FIRST images. A radio source sample with 95 per cent completeness and 98.9 per cent reliability is achieved, far better than would be possible for this sample if only one of the surveys was used. The radio source sample is then divided into two classes: radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galaxies in which the radio emission is dominated by star formation. The division is based on the location of a galaxy in the plane of 4000-Å break strength versus radio luminosity per unit stellar mass and provides a sample of 2215 radio-loud AGN and 497 star-forming galaxies brighter than 5 mJy at 1.4 GHz. A full catalogue of positions and radio properties is provided for these sources. The local radio luminosity function is then derived both for radio-loud AGN and for star-forming galaxies and is found to be in agreement with previous studies. By using the radio to far-infrared (FIR) correlation, the radio luminosity function of star-forming galaxies is also compared to the luminosity function derived in the FIR. It is found to agree well at high luminosities but less so at lower luminosities, confirming that the linearity of the radio to FIR correlation breaks down below about 1022 W Hz−1 at 1.4 GHz.  相似文献

The conventional interpretation of the cosmic background radiation (CBR) as a relic of the Big Bang assumes that the intergalactic medium is highly transparent to radio frequency radiation. Previous work (Lerner, 1990) used the well-known correlation of IR and radio luminosities of spiral galaxies to test this assumption. That analysis, using 237 Shapley-Ames galaxies showed that radio luminosity (L R ) for a given IR-luminosity, declines with distance, implying that the IGM strongly absorbs radio frequency radiation. That absorption has now been confirmed using a sample of 301 IR-bright galaxies. Using two independent methods of determining the correlation of IR and radio luminosities of spiral and interacting galaxies, the sample shows that for a givenL IR ,L R D –0.32±0.04 over a range of distances from 0.7-300 Mpc. (H 0 = 75 km s–1 Mpc–1). The correlation is significant at the 8 or 10–14 level. Absorption by the IGM is the only reasonable explanation for this correlation. The existence of such absorption implies that neither the isotropy nor the spectrum of the CBR are primordial and that neither is evidence for a Big Bang.

The radio and xray properties of spiral galaxies with and without a bar are discussed on the basis of complete samples that we have compiled. The two types of spirals are shown not to differ from one another in emission power in the two indicated ranges. In the case of SB galaxies, the luminosities in the IR, radio, and xray ranges are closely related. The spectral indices of SB and SA galaxies in the 1.4–5 GHz range are the same, on the average. In the case of barred galaxies, however, a definite dependence is observed between the spectral index and both the IR and × ray luminosities, i.e., the spectral index increases as both luminosities increase. It is assumed that this is caused by the bar itself, which stimulates star formation in a barred galaxy. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41. No. 4, pp. 599–608, October–December, 1998.  相似文献

We present the first results from a major HST WFPC2 imaging study aimed at providing the first statistically meaningful comparison of the morphologies, luminosities, scalelengths and colours of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars, radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies. We describe the design of this study and present the images that have been obtained for the first half of our 33-source sample. We find that the hosts of all three classes of luminous AGN are massive elliptical galaxies, with scalelengths ≃10 kpc, and R − K colours consistent with mature stellar populations. Most importantly, this is first unambiguous evidence that, just like radio-loud quasars, essentially all radio-quiet quasars brighter than M R =−24 reside in massive ellipticals. This result removes the possibility that radio 'loudness' is directly linked to host galaxy morphology, but is however in excellent accord with the black hole/spheroid mass correlation recently highlighted by Magorrian et al. We apply the relations given by Magorrian et al. to infer the expected Eddington luminosity of the putative black hole at the centre of each of the spheroidal host galaxies we have uncovered. Comparison with the actual nuclear R -band luminosities suggests that the black holes in most of these galaxies are radiating at a few per cent of the Eddington luminosity; the brightest host galaxies in our low- z sample are capable of hosting quasars with M R ≃− 28, comparable to the most luminous quasars at z ≃3. Finally, we discuss our host-derived black hole masses in the context of the radio luminosity:black hole mass correlation recently uncovered for nearby galaxies by Franceschini et al., and consider the resulting implications for the physical origin of radio loudness.  相似文献

This is a statistical study of galaxies with a UV excess. A sample of 702 Kazarian galaxies (KG) is used. The KGs are identified with objects from the MAPS, IRAS FSC, IRAS PSC, and NVSS catalogs. The O and E magnitudes are known for more than 92% of the KGs. It is shown that the KG sample is complete up to 16m.0 in the blue and to 16m.5 in the red. More than 36% of the KGs are identified with infrared (IR) sources at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 m. Calculations of the far IR (FIR) luminosities show that 4% of the KGs are strong FIR emitters (LFIR ≥ 1011 L). More than 32% of the KGs have been identified as radio sources at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. A determination of the radio luminosities shows that the sample of KGs with known radial velocities include one powerful, LR ≥ 1025 W/Hz, radio object (Kaz 273) which is a BL Lac object. A close correlation (r=0.93) is bound between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies with a UV excess. An examination of the relationship between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies in different spectral classes shows that the correlation coefficient is higher (r=0.99) and the slope of the fit curve is larger (a=1.18) for Seyfert galaxies. Calculations of the logarithm of the ratio of the FIR and radio fluxes indicate that the sample includes 4 KGs with a radio excess, while there are none with an IR excess. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 369–379 (August 2007).  相似文献

We present the first results of our Hubble Space Telescope HST WFPC2 F814W snapshot imaging survey, targeting virtually all sub-mJy decimetric radio-selected star-forming galaxies. The radio selection at ∼1 GHz is free from extinction effects and the radio luminosities are largely unaffected by AGN contamination, making these galaxies ideal tracers of the cosmic star formation history. A subsample of four targets is presented here, selected at 1.4 GHz from the spectroscopically homogenous and complete samples of Benn et al. and Hopkins et al. The redshifts are confined to a narrow range around z ∼0.2, to avoid differential evolution, with a radio luminosity close to L ∗ where the galaxies dominate the comoving volume-averaged star formation rate. We find clearly disturbed morphologies resembling those of ultraluminous infrared galaxies, indicating that galaxy interactions may be the dominant mechanism for triggering star formation at these epochs. The morphologies are also clearly different from those of coeval quasars and radio galaxies, as found in star-forming galaxies selected at other wavelengths. This may prove challenging for models that propose direct causal links between AGN evolution and the cosmic star formation history at these epochs. The asymmetries are typically much larger than seen in the Canada–France Redshift Survey at similar redshifts, optical luminosities and H α -derived star formation rates, indicating the possible existence of an obscuration-related morphological bias in such samples.  相似文献

We present a statistical analysis of the largest X-ray survey of nearby spiral galaxies in which diffuse emission has been separated from discrete source contributions. Regression and rank-order correlation analyses are used to compare X-ray properties, such as total, source and diffuse luminosities and diffuse emission temperature, with a variety of physical and multiwavelength properties, such as galaxy mass, type and activity, and optical and infrared luminosity.
The results are discussed in terms of the way in which hot gas and discrete X-ray sources scale with the mass and activity of galaxies, and with the star formation rate. We find that the X-ray properties of starburst galaxies are dependent primarily on their star-forming activity, whilst for more quiescent galaxies, galaxy mass is the more important parameter. One of the most intriguing results is the tight linear scaling between far-infrared and diffuse X-ray luminosity across the sample, even though the hot gas changes from a hydrostatic corona to a free wind across the activity range sampled here.  相似文献

We investigate the dependence of the Fanaroff–Riley (FR) 1/2 dichotomy of radio galaxies on their luminosities and redshifts. Because of a very strong redshift-luminosity correlation (Malmquist bias) in a flux-limited sample, any redshift-dependent effect could appear as a luminosity-related effect and vice versa. A question could then arise—do all the morphological differences seen in the two classes (FR 1 and 2 types) of sources, usually attributed to the differences in their luminosities, could as well be primarily a redshift-dependent effect? A sharp break in luminosity, seen among the two classes, could after all reflect a sharp redshift dependence due to a rather critical ambient density value at some cosmic epoch. A doubt on these lines does not seem to have been raised in past and things have never been examined with this particular aspect in mind. We want to ascertain the customary prevalent view in the literature that the systematic differences in the two broad morphology types of FR 1 and 2 radio galaxies are indeed due to the differences in their luminosities, and not due to a change in redshift. Here we investigate the dependence of FR 1/2 dichotomy of radio galaxies on luminosity and redshift by using the 3CR sample, where the FR 1/2 dichotomy was first seen, supplemented by data from an additional sample (MRC), that goes about a factor of 5 or more deeper in flux-density than the original 3CR sample. This lets us compare sources with similar luminosities but at different redshifts as well as examine sources at similar redshifts but with different luminosities, thereby allowing us a successful separation of the otherwise two intricately entangled effects. We find that the morphology type is not directly related to redshift and the break between the two types of morphologies seems to depend only upon the radio luminosity.  相似文献

X-ray observations of low-power radio galaxies from the B2 catalogue   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We present an analysis of X-ray data, taken with ROSAT , for a well-defined sample of low-power radio galaxies from the Bologna B2 catalogue. Where possible, the HRI has been used in order to take advantage of the high spatial resolution provided by this instrument. A variety of models are fitted to radial profiles in order to separate the resolved and unresolved X-ray emission from the galaxies. We demonstrate a strong, approximately linear, correlation between the luminosities of the unresolved X-ray components and the 5-GHz luminosities of the radio cores in this sample. This suggests a physical relationship between the soft X-ray emission of radio galaxies and the jet-generated radio core emission. We infer a nuclear jet-related origin for at least some of the X-ray emission.  相似文献

The relationship between the rotation curves for the galaxies and the distribution of mass and angular momentum within the galaxies is examined. The theory of angular momentum transfer is applied to the observed properties of the galaxies. The coupling between the dynamical mass of a spiral galaxy and its luminosity is studied. Most of the spiral galaxies in subclusters surrounding NGC 4889, NGC 4874, and NGC 4839 in the Coma cluster are galaxies that have lower luminosities, with MB fainter than −21m.5. These galaxies are characterized by a higher mass-to-luminosity ratio than that of the galaxies with higher luminosities MB brighter than −21m.5, which suggests the presence of a large fraction of dark matter in the spiral galaxies of the subclusters. The properties of a sample of extragalactic H2O maser sources over a wide spectral range are discussed. Based on a sample of 81 maser galaxies it is shown that mega- and kilomasers have completely different properties. In particular, for megamasers the strongest observed relationships are between the parameters of the H2O line and the mass of the galactic nucleus, while the parameters of the line are uncorrelated with the x-ray, infrared, and radio emission. A weak correlation between megamaser emission and the surface (column) density of hydrogen is observed. As for kilomasers, their H2O luminosity depends weakly on the x-ray emission, although in the case of soft x rays this dependence is significant. The H2O luminosity of kilomasers is moderately correlated with the infrared and radio continuum luminosities, but the line parameters are independent of the mass of the nucleus and the surface density of hydrogen.  相似文献

We present optical identifications for a sample of 20 previously unknown X-ray/radio sources that are present both in the source catalogue of ROSAT PSPC pointed observations ( ROSAT SRC) and in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). The optical spectroscopy was carried out with the 2.1-m telescope at San Pedro Martir (Mexico) during 1995 April and September. We have identified 15 active galactic nuclei [including 12 broad-emission-line (FWHM >1000 km s−1) objects, one bona fide BL Lac, one BL Lac candidate and one narrow-line (FWHM < 1000 km s−1) radio galaxy] and five radio galaxies. We derive the X-ray fluxes and luminosities by analysing the PSPC exposures, and show the radio morphology from the NVSS maps.  We find that the correlation between the monochromatic X-ray luminosity at 2 keV and the core radio luminosity at 5 GHz for the radio galaxies in our sample follows that found for the 3CR radio galaxies, suggesting a possible nuclear origin for the X-ray emission in these sources. This correlation is weaker in the case of broad-line objects, indicating the presence of another (unbeamed) mechanism for the X-ray emission only weakly related to the radio emission.  相似文献

Six complete samples of radio sources have been analysed by the Spearman rank and the Spearman partial-rank correlation coefficients. The relations between the radio luminosities and linear sizes as well as between linear sizes and redshift indicate that the observed angular diameter-redshift diagram may be explained by the changes of linear sizes with radio luminosity of radio sources.  相似文献
