Hard X-ray and radio observations lead to the conclusion that production of non-thermal electrons is a common phenomenon of the active Sun. A preliminary analysis of three hard X-ray bursts observed with the OGO-5 satellite and the radio observations reported in the literature indicates that non-thermal particles are present in the flare region prior to the impulsive (flash) phase and also during the gradual rise and fall (GRF) bursts which are usually explained in terms of purely thermal radiation. The principal difference between the non-thermal electrons observed before the flash phase and during the flash phase appears to be in their total number rather than in the hardness of their energy spectrum. This indicates that the basic characteristics of the two acceleration processes are probably similar although the total energy converted into non-thermal electrons is considerably larger in the flash phase than in the build-up phase. Transient absorbing H features and filament activations are discussed in terms of their ability to produce energetic particle events and magnetic energy release.Presently at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley and Institute of Plasma Research, Stanford University, Stanford, California.  相似文献

I have studied the observational relationship between the location of flare sites in active regions and three other observables, viz., H line width, hard X-ray burst parameters, and peak microwave fluxes. Results suggest that the strength of the magnetic field plays a role in governing the magnitudes of these emissions. Qualitative relationships are derived on the assumption of proportionality between the spectral maximum frequency of the associated microwave burst and the field strength in the microwave source. The relationship inferred between the power in thick target electrons (derived from the hard X-ray burst) and the column density of second-level hydrogen atoms (derived from the H line widths) is compared with calculations by Brown (1973) and Canfield (1974).The line widths observed for two white light flares suggest that a criterion for detectable continuum emission in disk flares is an H line width 20 Å.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We describe the instrumental corrections which have to be incorporated for reliable correction and deconvolution of images obtained in the 16–22 keV and 22–30 keV energy bands of the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) aboard the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM). These corrections include amplifier gain and collimator hole size variations across the field of view, amplifier/filter efficiency, variation in effective collimator hole size and angular response with photon energy, dead-time, and hard X-ray plate transmission. We also emphasise the substantial Poisson noise in these energy bands, and describe the maximum entropy deconvolution/correction routine we have developed to establish the spatial structure which can be reliably inferred from HXIS data.

Next we discuss the results of application of our routine to the three impulsive flare phases reported by Duijveman et al. (1982) as exhibiting hard X-ray ‘footpoints’, namely 1980, April 10, May 21, and November 5. Our main conclusions are:

  1. (1)

Maximum entropy smoothing and Poisson noise data perturbations do not remove the main footpoint features in 16–30 keV nor change their basic morphology. However the results emphasise the asymmetry in footpoint size in the May 21 flare and confirm its possible presence in April 10. They also reveal the 3rd weak distant footpoint in the May 21 flare at an earlier time than found by Duijveman et al.

When the 16–22 and 22–30 keV bands are analysed separately, however, it is found that the footpoints are much less visible above noise in the harder band - i.e. the footpoint spectra are steep. In the April 10 and November 5 flares they are steeper than either the spectrum of intervening pixels or the spectrum at higher energies measured for the whole flare by the SMM Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS).

  1. (2)

The footpoint contrast with surroundings is less than found by Duijveman et al., despite image deconvolution, because of the maximum entropy smoothing of noise.

  2. (3)

The 16–30keV HXIS footpoint fluxes in the three flares are respectively 28%, 17%, and 15% of the simultaneous HXRBS flare power-law spectrum extrapolated into this energy range.

  3. (4)

Where Poisson noise is taken into account we find, by cross-correlating pixel count rates, that footpoint synchronism was either not provable at all, or substantially less close than reported by Duijveman et al.

Next we considered the implications of these results for models of the footpoint emission. Contrary to Duijveman et al. we do not consider the HXIS ‘footpoint’ data as supporting a conventional thick target beam interpretation since:

  1. (A)

The footpoint photon (and electron) fluxes are much less than expected from HXRBS extrapolation. This result casts doubt on recent models of chromospheric heating by electron beams which usually assume all of the HXRBS emission to come from HXIS footpoints.

  2. (B)

The footpoint spectra for the April 10 and November 5 flares are much softer than the HXRBS spectrum and than the spectrum of intervening pixels, contrary to thick target predictions.

  3. (C)

Contrary to Duijveman et al. footpoint synchronism does not demand an unreasonable Alfvén speed and so does not require non-thermal particles.

In spite of these objections we also re-considered the constraints placed on the acceleration site conditions in a beam interpretation by return current stability and footpoint contrast in the summed 16–30 keV range. Using the smoothed maximum entropy contrast and taking explicit account of coronal thermal emission, we find maximum densities somewhat larger than Duijveman et al. estimated, and much higher maximum values of T e /T i .

Regarding thermal interpretations we found:

  1. (a)

Models involving continuous production of short-lived hot kernels in the arch top with Maxwellian tail electrons escaping to the footpoints could explain the 16–30 keV contrast with a rather higher energetic efficiency than a pure beam model. However, whatever the temperature distribution of hot kernel production, the model predicts footpoints harder than the arch summit, contrary to HXIS data.

  2. (b)

A model with hot kernels produced in one limb of an arch can explain the asymmetry in footpoint size observed in May 21, and probably April 10, and is energetically even more efficient than (a) but is also inconsistent with the spectral data.

  3. (c)

Finally we point out that HXIS footpoint data may be consistent with a purely geometric interpretation in an almost uniform arch filled with hot plasma.

Dicke (1978) has argued that the phase of the solar cycle appears to be coupled to an internal clock: shorter cycles are usually followed by longer ones, as if the Sun remembers the correct phase. The data set is really too short to demonstrate the presence of a phase memory, but phase and amplitude of the cycle are strongly correlated for 300 yr or more. It is shown that this memory effect can be explained by mean field theory in terms of fluctuations in , which induce coherent changes in the frequency and amplitude of a dynamo wave. It is concluded that there is neither a strong observational indication nor a theoretical need for an extra timing device, in addition to the one provided by dynamo wave physics.Dedicated to Cornelis de Jager  相似文献

An attempt is made to impart a constructive character to the concept of the solar flaremagnetospheric substorm analogy. An idealized scheme for a two-ribbon solar flare in the originally closed magnetosphere of the active region is discussed. The basis is formed by a terrestrial substorm scenario with two active phases (Mishin et al., 1992). While a quadrupole magnetic configuration turns out to be a solar analog of the Earth's magnetosphere. A physical mechanism that sustains the preflare storage phase, is provided by an instability like a stretching instability of the closed geomagnetotail. The storage process is attributed to the emergence into the corona of closed magnetic flux lines in adjacent (to the location of the would-be flare) regions. The flare flash-phase is determined by the change-over of the stretching instability to a disruption instability of a nonstationary (not neutral) current sheet inside the storage zone. The final recovery phase corresponds to the wellknown Pneuman-Kopp model.  相似文献

We evaluate the relationship between the hard X-ray photon spectrum and the flux of iron K emission in a thick-target electron bombardment model. Results are presented for various power-law hard X-ray spectra. We then apply these results to two events observed with the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer and the K channel of the X-Ray Polychromator Bent Crystal Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. For one of the events, on 29 March, 1980, at 09:18 UT, the K flux predicted for a thick-target non-thermal process is significant compared to the background fluorescent component, and the data are indeed consistent with an enhancement of the predicted amount. For the other event, on 14 October, 1980 at 06:09 UT, the hard X-ray spectrum is so steep that no significant Ka flux is predicted for this process, and no enhancement is seen. We conclude that the agreement between the predicted K flux and the observed magnitude of the K enhancement above the fluorescent background at the time of the large hard X-ray bursts lends support to a thick-target non-thermal interpretation of impulsive hard X-ray emission in solar flares.  相似文献

Recently Gosling (1993) examined the interplanetary consequences of solar activity, and suggested that the coronal mass ejection (CME) was the prime driver of most disturbances (i.e., interplanetary shocks, high-energy particles, geomagnetic storms, etc.) and that the solar flare was relatively unimportant in this context. He coined the phrase Solar Flare Myth. Since that paper there has been much debate on the origin of interplanetary disturbances - most people sitting squarely in the flare or CME camp. vestka (1995) has attacked Gosling's conclusions on the grounds that it is misleading to ignore the flare, and that past flare classifications were perfectly adequate for explaining the observations described by Gosling. This paper is a comment on vestka's report and an attempt to put the Solar Flare Myth into perspective - indeed it is an attempt to view the solar flare/CME phenomena in a more constructive light.  相似文献

The Phebus experiment on board the GRANAT satellite provides temporal and spectral observations of solar and cosmic -ray bursts in the 0.1 100 MeV nominal energy range. The experiment was turned on January 8, 1990 and is still in operation. In this paper we present the main characteristics of the Phebus experiment and we describe and discuss some of the observational properties of the 18 solar hard X-ray/-ray events detected during the first semester of the Phebus operation. It is found that: (i) events of a few minutes duration, detected above 100 keV, systematically show subsecond time variations; (ii) longer duration events (>5 min) do not exhibit fast time variations and generally consist of 1-min peaks superimposed on a less intense, sometimes harder, slowly varying component. In addition to these general trends we discuss in more detail three events for which significant count-rates have been detected above 10 MeV.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the relationship between photospheric magnetic fields and chromospheric velocity fields in a solar active region, especially evolving features of the chromospheric velocity field at preflare sites. It seems that flares are related to unusually distributed velocity field structures, and initial bright kernels and ribbons of the flares appear in the red-shifted areas (i.e., downward flow areas) close to the inversion line of H Dopplergrams with steep gradients of the velocity fields, no matter whether the areas have simple magnetic structure or a weak magnetic field, or strong magnetic shear and complex structure of the magnetic fields. The data show that during several hours prior to the flares, while the velocity field evolves, the sites of the flare kernels (or ribbons) with red-shifted features come close to the inversion line of the velocity field. This result holds regardless of whether or not the flare sites are wholly located in blue-shifted areas (i.e., upward flow areas), or are far from the inversion line of the Doppler velocity field (V = 0 line), or are partly within red-shifted areas. There are two cases favourable for the occurrence of flares, one is that the gulf-like neutral lines of the magnetic field (B = 0 line) occur in the H red-shifted areas, the other is that the gulf-like inversion lines of the H Doppler velocity field (V = 0 line) occur in the unipolar magnetic areas. These observational facts indicate that the velocity field and magnetic field have the same effect on the process of flare energy accumulation and release.  相似文献

A theoretical model of the polarization properties of a Zeiss-type coelostat is presented and discussed in detail. The Muller matrix describing the modification of the Stokes vector of the incident radiation as a result of the multiple reflections on the coelostat mirrors is derived as a function of the solar coordinates, the geometrical configuration of the coelostat, and the parameters defining the optical properties of the mirrors. These parameters, or more particularly, the index of refraction n and the extinction coefficient k, have been evaluated by means of laboratory measurements performed on a series of specimens having characteristics similar to those of the coelostat mirrors. The geometry of the coelostat configuration is described in full detail. The theoretical model has been then particularized to the case of the Donati Solar Tower in Arcetri, and some experimental measurements have been performed to check the correctness of the model. These measurements show the basic adequacy of the mathematical model, although some offset terms are found in the Stokes parameters U and V.  相似文献

A low-frequency wave is treated as a local oscillation to modulate the guiding center of electrons beam, which is considered as free energy to excite Alfvén waves by a kinetic plasma instability under low-frequency approximation. The nonlinearity of the model is shown by a critical value of the amplitude of the low-frequency wave, and Alfvén waves are growing in a broad turbulent spectrum with fractional harmonics, which strongly depend on the criterion. The instability is limited in the direction nearly perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The growth rates are very sensitive to the beam speed that perpendicular to the magnetic field, the propagational angle, and the magnetic field strength, but not sensitive to the beam speed parallel to the magnetic field. This model is used to explain the modulations with multiple timescales in the flare light curves at radio, hard X-ray and H-alpha bands.  相似文献

A new crossing method for the study of turbulent velocities in solar and stellar photospheres is considered. The method does not need knowledge of the abundance and oscillator strengths for determining the microturbulent velocity, if the macroturbulent velocity is adopted; or it allows investigation of the micro- and macro-velocities simultaneously, if the abundance and oscillator strengths are known. Using the crossing method for 200 lines of neutral iron we obtain microturbulent velocities for a large range of depths in the solar photosphere. The distribution of macroturbulent velocities with depth is also investigated. The total velocity field calculated from the obtained micro- and macro-velocities agrees with previous results from independent methods. This demonstrates the reliability of using the crossing method for separate determination of the micro- and macroturbulent velocities in solar and stellar atmospheres.  相似文献

Analysis of the observational data obtained with a high angular resolution in the ranges of vacuum ultraviolet (1″, TRACE) and hard X-ray (4″, RHESSI) emissions in some solar flares previously considered “single-loop” ones shows that they are not such flares. The thick single loops with a diameter of 13″–21″ observed in these flares in the microwave range with an angular resolution of 5″–10″ (NoRH) are actually arcades of thinner loops with a diameter of less than 3″. In this case, the observed quasi-periodic pulsations of microwave emission are not a consequence of the oscillations of an isolated thick loop, as is usually assumed, but a result of the successive involvement of many relatively thinner loops in the process of flare energy release. The established facts impose significant constraints on the generation models of pulsations in flares.  相似文献

The X-ray line at 6.4 keV has been observed from solar flares. It is found that K-fluorescence of neutral iron in the photosphere due to thermal (T 107 K) X-rays of the gradual phase is its dominant production mechanism. For a given flux and energy spectrum of incident X-rays, the flux at 1 AU of iron K-photons depends on the photospheric iron abundance, the height of the X-ray source, and the helio-centric angle between the flare and the observer. Therefore, the flux of iron K-photons, when measured simultaneously with the flux and energy spectrum of the X-ray continuum and the flare location, can give us information on the height of the X-ray source and the photospheric iron abundance. Here we present our Monte Carlo calculations of iron K-fluorescence efficiencies, so that they might be useful for interpretations of future measurements of the 6.4 keV line (e.g., by a detector to be flown on the Solar Maximum Mission).  相似文献

The results of observations of 159 stars at 1640 Å in Puppis made with the space telescope Glazar are presented. It is shown that the observed stars are members of different groups of stars situated at distances of about 120, 370, 700, 1250, 2400, and 4000 pc. The last two groups belong to the Pup OB1 and the Pup OB2 stellar associations. There is relatively little absorption in the observed region. The absorbing matter is mainly concentrated in small clouds. It is suggested that three stars — CP –27°4197, HD 60479, and HD 61672-are embedded in a dust envelope and that the star HD 60057 has a hot subdwarf companion.Forty-four of the observed stars are new OB or early A-type stars, spectral types of which were not known.  相似文献

TeV γ-ray detections in flaring states without activity in X-rays from blazars have attracted much attention due to the irregularity of these “orphan” flares. Although the synchrotron self-Compton model has been very successful in explaining the spectral energy distribution and spectral variability of these sources, it has not been able to describe these atypical flaring events. On the other hand, an electron–positron pair plasma at the base of the AGN jet was proposed as the mechanism of bulk acceleration of relativistic outflows. This plasma in quasi-thermal equilibrium called Wein fireball emits radiation at MeV-peak energies serving as target of accelerated protons. In this work we describe the “orphan” TeV flares presented in blazars 1ES 1959+650 and Mrk 421 assuming geometrical considerations in the jet and evoking the interactions of Fermi-accelerated protons and MeV-peak target photons coming from the Wein fireball. After describing successfully these “orphan” TeV flares, we correlate the TeV γ-ray, neutrino and UHECR fluxes through interactions and calculate the number of high-energy neutrinos and UHECRs expected in IceCube/AMANDA and TA experiment, respectively. In addition, thermal MeV neutrinos produced mainly through electron–positron annihilation at the Wein fireball will be able to propagate through it. By considering two- (solar, atmospheric and accelerator parameters) and three-neutrino mixing, we study the resonant oscillations and estimate the neutrino flavor ratios as well as the number of thermal neutrinos expected on Earth.  相似文献

A coronal bright point is resolved into a pattern of emission which, at any given time, consists of 2 or 3 miniature loops (each 2500 km in diameter and 12 000 km long). During the half-day lifetime of the bright point individual loops evolved on a time scale 6 min. A small ctive region seemed to evolve in this way, but the occasional blurring together of several loops made it difficult to follow individual changes.  相似文献

Although the Salpeter approximation for static screening is widely accepted and used in stellar modeling, the question of dynamic screening has been revisited. Here we reproduce Shaviv and Shaviv’s numerical analysis of the screening energy for p-p reactions in the solar core using the techniques of molecular dynamics to directly calculate the motion of ions and electrons due to Coulomb interactions without the mean-field assumption that is inherent in the Salpeter approximation. We conclude that the effects of dynamic screening are relevant and should be included in the treatment of the plasma, especially in the computation of nuclear reaction rates.  相似文献
