We observed a cluster of extremely bright penumbral grains located at the inner limb‐side penumbra of the leading sunspot in active region NOAA 10892. The penumbral grains in the cluster showed a typical peak intensity of 1.58 times the intensity I0 of the granulation surrounding the sunspot. The brightest specimen even reached values of 1.8–2.0 I0, thus, exceeding the temperatures of the brightest granules in the immediate surroundings of the sunspot. We find that the observed sample of extremely bright penumbral grains is an intermittent phenomenon, that disappears on time scales of hours. Horizontal flow maps indicating proper motions reveal that the cluster leaves a distinct imprint on the penumbral flow field. We find that the divergence line co‐located with the cluster is displaced from the middle penumbra closer towards the umbra and that the radial outflow velocities are significantly increased to speeds in excess of 2 km s–1. The extremely bright penumbral grains, which are located at the inner limb‐side penumbra, are also discernible in offband Hα images down to Hα ± 0.045 nm. We interpret the observations in the context of the moving flux tube model arguing that hotter than normal material is rapidly ascending along the inner footpoint of the embedded flux tube, i.e., the ascending hot material is the cause of the extremely bright penumbral grains. This study is based on speckle‐reconstructed broad‐band images taken at 600 nm and chromospheric Hα observations obtained with two‐dimensional spectroscopy. All data were taken with adaptive optics under very good seeing conditions at the Dunn Solar Telescope, National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak, New Mexico on 2006 June 10. Line asymmetries of five magnetically insensitive lines in penumbrae are investigated in detail. It is shown that the high Evershed velocities as derived from line satellites originate in dark penumbral regions (DR), the main line components showing small velocities originate in bright penumbral regions (BR). From the depressions of the main line component and the satellite the intensity of the DR is estimated to be 3.5 times higher than that of umbrae. The area of the BR exceeds that of the DR by a factor of about 1.8. An interpretation of the discrepancy between velocity- and magnetic neutral lines is given.  相似文献

It is confirmed that the penumbral bright grains are moving towards the sunspots umbra. We find different proper motions of 0.08 to 0.33 km s–1 for different penumbrae and different reduction methods. The lifetimes of these bright grains are about 1.5 to 3 hr depending on the position in the penumbra.  相似文献

On 13 May 2000 parts of a penumbra were observed in an active region NOAA 8990 with the La Palma Stokes Polarimeter attached to the Swedish Vacuum Solar Telescope. The stratification over the solar atmosphere of different physical parameters is retrieved from these data by using the Stokes inversion based on response functions. The results confirm the previous findings of the penumbral structure. In general, the magnetic field becomes weaker and more horizontal with increasing distance from the umbra and the line-of-sight velocities are increasing towards the outer boundary of the penumbra. The results also suggest the existence of the unresolved fine structure of the penumbra. The stratifications of the temperature and of the magnetic field strength indicate the presence of rising flux tubes, which were predicted theoretically by Schlichenmaier, Jahn and Schmidt (1998, Astron. Astrophys. 337, 897).  相似文献

Observations of the penumbral intensity of sunspots in 13 wavelength regions are presented. In 4 wavelength regions 54 sunspots are measured. In the other wavelength regions the number of sunspots considered ranges from 3–19.The penumbral intensity alters with position within the spot. This intensity variation is found to be comparable with the change in intensity from one spot to another. The penumbral intensity is found to be independent of spot size in the sample considered. The penumbra model of Kjeldseth Moe and Maltby (1969) with = 0.055 is supported by the measurements.  相似文献

A semi-empirical model of a penumbral chromosphere is presented which represents a specific region of the penumbra located approximately one-fourth the distance outward from the umbra-penumbra interface. The model is based on simultaneous observations of high-resolution spectra of Caii K, H, and 8498 made over a sunspot penumbra (SPO 5007) with the Echelle Spectrograph at the Vacuum Tower Telescope at Sacramento Peak Observatory on 18 December, 1979.Spectral profiles were calculated using a non-LTE line formation procedure with various chromospheric models where the optimum model is determined by matching the synthesized profiles with the observational features. The best fit yields a model with overlying column mass m 0 of 8 × 10–6 g cm–2 which also agrees with the observed K3/H3 intensity ratio of 1.22.This work was supported by the US-Republic of Korea Cooperative Science Program (K-53).  相似文献

We present results of investigations into chromospheric velocity oscillations in sunspots, carried out at the Sayan Solar Observatory. It is shown that the “chevron” structures in the space-time diagrams demonstrate wavetrain properties. Such structures are indicators of a propagating wave process and they are typical of many sunspots. In the authors’ opinion, three-minute umbral oscillations are not the source of running penumbral waves (RPW). It is very likely that umbral oscillations and RPW initially propagate along different magnetic field lines. We explain the decrease in RPW propagation velocity and frequency in the outer penumbra, as compared with the inner, by the combined action of different frequency modes. To better reveal the properties of these modes, frequency filtering was used. Our measurements of the RPW (five-minute mode) wavelength and RPW propagation velocity in different sunspots vary from 12 to 30 and from 28 to 60 – 70 km s−1 correspondingly.  相似文献

Preliminary results of a study of photographic and photometric properties of the large-scale ( 3) structure of a sunspot and its surrounding photosphere are given. Stratospheric direct frames of the solar photosphere were used in the study. Isophotes located immediately beyond the outer edge of the penumbra were of an irregular form and reflected bright and dark regions. No presence of either a sunspot bright outer ring or inner ring was detected. The photospheric structure and its behaviour with time were, in fact, unchanged up to the very boundary of the penumbra.A distribution of the smeared intensity in a sunspot has been derived. The mean brightness of the penumbra is I PU 0.62 I and umbra I U < 0.15 I . An analysis of the obtained results allowed us to make a conclusion that the area of the dark penumbral regions exceeds that of the bright penumbral regions, and the condition S BR/S DR < 1 should be fulfilled in the penumbrae of sunspots.  相似文献

Spatial scans with a resolution of 3.4 arc sec of the broad-band circular polarization of several sunspots have been made in five filter bands over the wavelength range 0.4–1.7µ with a sensitivity of 1 × 10–6 fractional polarization. The scans, across a spot through the penumbra and umbra center, revealed two important features: (1) The broad-band circularly polarized fluxV reverses in sign, or diminishes to near zero, at the center of the umbral region relative to the outer penumbra. This effect was wavelength dependent and was most clearly detected as a definite reversal in a band at 1.2µ, although a reversal was also detected in a very broad band extending from 0.8 to 1.6µ. (2) There is a marked asymmetry: in all cases the limbward penumbral region exhibited strongerV values than did the disk-center (inward) side of the spot, at all observed wavelengths. Such previously unreported structure in the magnetic circular polarization of sunspots provides new clues for understanding the anomalous large broad-band polarization at short wavelengths and at the same time imposes new constraints on sunspot models. For example, the polarization reversal in the umbra relative to the penumbra can be naively explained by return-flux sunspot models; but this is not the only interpretation. Alternatively, it can relate to reversals in mass-flow velocities and/or vertical velocity gradients, as between the umbra and penumbra.  相似文献

We have studied running penumbral waves, the homogeneous Evershed effect, and the spatial relation between intensity and Doppler velocity penumbral features of a chromospheric sunspot. The observations were obtained with the multichannel subtractive double-pass spectrograph (MSDP) operating in H at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) installed at Tenerife (Canary Islands). We derived intensity and Doppler velocity maps at H ± 0.3 Å over a two-dimensional field of view. We have computed the components of the velocity vector (radial, azimuthal, vertical) as a function of distance from the center of the spot under the assumption of axial symmetry. The results show the well-known, from previous observations, general large-scale characteristics of the chromospheric Evershed flow. Our measurements show that the axes along the discrete structures, where the Evershed flow is confined, are not spatially related to the axes along H ± 0.3 Å intensity features, and we suggest that either the flow is confined in flow channels or that it takes place along sheared magnetic field lines. We also detected, for the first time in velocity images, running penumbral waves, which started in the outer 0.3 of the umbral radius and propagated through the penumbra with propagation velocities 13–24 km s–1. The propagation velocity, as well as the velocity amplitude, is greater for the waves closer to the center of the spot and diminishes as one moves outward.  相似文献

A time sequence of high-resolution SOHO/MDI magnetograms, Dopplergrams, and continuum images is used to study the moving magnetic features (MMFs) in and out of penumbral filaments. Precursors of MMFs have been observed inside the penumbral filaments. One hundred and fifteen out of 127 well-observed individual MMFs in the moat of two sunspots have been identified to have precursors at an average distance of 4″ inside the penumbral filaments. The velocity of these precursors is small inside the penumbral filaments and becomes large once the MMFs cross the outer penumbra. The paths followed by the MMFs exhibit large fluctuations in their magnetic field strength values, with an additional hike in the fluctuations near the outer penumbra. It is also observed that the path followed by the MMFs appear as a cluster of fibrils which could be traced back inside the penumbra. The appearance of MMFs and their azimuthal velocity is position and time dependent. Electronic Supplementary Material Electronic Supplementary Material is available for this article at  相似文献

Spectro-polarimetric observations at 2231 nm were made of NOAA 10008 near the west solar limb on 29 June 2002 using the National Solar Observatory McMath–Pierce Telescope at Kitt Peak and the California State University Northridge – National Solar Observatory infrared camera. Scans of spectra in both Stokes I and Stokes V were collected; the intensity spectra were processed to remove strong telluric absorption lines, and the Stokes V umbral spectra were corrected for instrumental polarization. The sunspot temperature is computed using the continuum contrast and umbral temperatures down to about 3700 K are observed. A strong Tii line at 2231.0 nm is used to probe the magnetic and velocity fields in the spot umbra and penumbra. Measurements of the Tii equivalent width versus plasma temperature in the sunspot agree with model predictions. Zeeman splitting measurements of the Stokes I and Stokes V profiles show magnetic fields up to 3300 G in the umbra, and a dependence of the magnetic field on the plasma temperature similar to that which was seen using Fei 1565 nm observations of the same spot two days earlier. The umbral Doppler velocity measurements are averaged in 16 azimuthal bins, and no radial flows are revealed to a limit of ±200 m s–1. A Stokes V magnetogram shows a reversal of the line-of-sight magnetic component between the limb and disk center sides of the penumbra. Because the Tii line is weak in the penumbra, individual spectra are averaged in azimuthal bins over the entire penumbral radial extent. The averaged Stokes V spectra show a magnetic reversal as a function of sunspot azimuthal angle. The mean penumbral magnetic field as measured with the Stokes V Zeeman component splitting is 1400 G. Several weak spectral lines are observed in the sunspot and the variation of the equivalent width versus temperature for four lines is examined. If these lines are from molecules, it is possible that lines at 2230.67, 2230.77, and 2231.70 nm originate from OH, while the line at 2232.21 nm may originate from CN.  相似文献

We have studied running penumbral waves, umbral oscillations, umbral flashes and their interrelations from H observations of a large isolated sunspot. Using a subtraction image processing technique we removed the sharp intensity gradient between the umbra and the penumbra and enhanced the low contrast, fine features. We observed running penumbral waves which started in umbral elements with a size of a few arcseconds, covered the umbra and subsequently propagated through the penumbra. The period of the waves was 190 s and the mean propagation velocity was about 15 km s–1. We detected intense brightenings, located between umbral elements from where waves started, which had the characteristics of umbral flashes. There are indications that umbral flashes are related to the propagation of the waves through the umbra and their coupling. The subtraction images also show considerable fine structure in the chromospheric umbra, with size between 0.3 and 0.8.  相似文献

Photographic spectra of the umbra of a sunspot (1971, August 24, Rome No. 6205) around 6150 Å show fine bright threads which were identified as the spectra of a lightbridge, of the bright end of a penumbral filament and of umbral dots, respectively. It was found, in agreement with the results of other authors, that the magnetic field in bright structures is considerably weaker than in dark umbral material. Analysis of line profiles of Fe ii 6149.2 Å in umbral dots indicates (a) a fieldstrength reduced by a factor 2 compared to the surroundings, (b) an outflow with v3.0 km s–1 relative to the penumbra and (c) possibly photospheric temperatures in umbral dots.Mitteilungen aus dem Fraunhofer Institut Nr. 115.  相似文献

Horizontal proper motions of penumbral structure and umbral dots have been measured from a 17-min-long time series of sunspot images by numerical techniques. In the penumbra, inflows are seen to occur predominantly in the inner region, with an average velocity of 290 m s–1. Penumbral outflows take place mostly in the outer part, where they reach velocities as high as 1.5 km s–1, with an average velocity of 500 m s–1. In the umbra, proper motions of 28 bright dots have been measured with an accuracy better than 50 m s–1. The mean velocity of the umbral dots is 210 m s–1. Most of the umbral dots display the well-known inward motion away from the peripheral umbra.  相似文献

We study the periodicity of twisting motions in sunspot penumbral filaments, which were recently discovered from space (Hinode) and ground-based (SST) observations. A sunspot was well observed for 97 minutes by Hinode/SOT in the G-band (4305 Å) on 12 November 2006. By the use of the time?–?space gradient applied to intensity space?–?time plots, twisting structures can be identified in the penumbral filaments. Consistent with previous findings, we find that the twisting is oriented from the solar limb to disk center. Some of them show a periodicity. The typical period is about ≈?four minutes, and the twisting velocity is roughly 6 km s?1. However, the penumbral filaments do not always show periodic twisting motions during the time interval of the observations. Such behavior seems to start and stop randomly with various penumbral filaments displaying periodic twisting during different intervals. The maximum number of periodic twists is 20 in our observations. Studying this periodicity can help us to understand the physical nature of the twisting motions. The present results enable us to determine observational constraints on the twisting mechanism.  相似文献

This paper presents a continued study of the two-dimensional guiding-center model of the solar wind interaction with the Moon. The characteristics theory and the computational method are discussed. The magnetic permeability of plasma is (1 + /2)–1 in the solar wind flow upstream of the Moon, and it changes to 1 in the void region of the lunar wake. The gradual change of the magnetic permeability in the penumbral region from the interplanetary condition to the void condition is explained as the source of field perturbations in the lunar wake. Perturbations of the magnetic field propagate as magnetoacoustic waves in a frame of reference moving with the plasma flow. Computer solutions were obtained to show that (i) the two principal perturbations of the magnetic field in the lunar wake (the umbral increase and the penumbral decrease) are confined to a region bounded by a Mach cone tangent to the lunar body, and (ii) the penumbral increases occur outside the lunar Mach cone. Computer solutions are also used to identify the source of field perturbations and to simulate the solar wind-moon interaction under varying interplanetary conditions.  相似文献

For the leading part of sunspot group NOAA 8323, which rapidly changed its complex structure, a time series of the line-of-sight (LOS) component of the velocity field was obtained. With a two-dimensional Fabry–Pérot spectrometer, the magnetically insensitive line Fei 557.6 nm was scanned. The inclination of the LOS (heliographic angle) to the vertical was =28.5°. The umbra of the observed spot was divided by a system of light bridges into several parts. The spatial and temporal velocity field also exhibits a considerable complexity: in one extended umbral area there is a downward flow of 1 km s–1 relative to other dark sub-umbrae. At the center-side penumbra, with a line-of-sight Evershed outflow of 1.5 km s–1, a persistent patch, somewhat darker than the average penumbra, has a LOS velocity of 1.3 km s–1 in opposite direction, probably a downflow. At the limb-side penumbra, a photosphere-like area is interspersed, interrupting the Evershed flow which resumes with typical strength beyond this feature towards the outer penumbral boundary. Most interesting is the behavior of the light bridges, which have a slight blue shift, interrupted by short events of strong blue or red shifts which – within the time resolution of 35 s – instantly affect a considerable part of a light bridge.  相似文献

The ratio of penumbral to umbral area of sunspots is an important topic for solar and geophysical studies. Hathaway (Solar Phys.286, 347, 2013) found a curious behaviour in this parameter for small sunspot groups (areas smaller than 100 millionths of solar hemisphere, msh) using records from Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO). Hathaway showed that the penumbra–umbra ratio decreased smoothly from more than 7 in 1905 to lower than 3 by 1930 and then increased to almost 8 in 1961. Thus, Hathaway proposed the existence of a secular variation in the penumbra–umbra area ratio. In order to confirm that secular variation, we employ data of the sunspot catalogue published by the Coimbra Astronomical Observatory (COI) for the period 1929?–?1941. Our results disagree with the penumbra–umbra ratio found by Hathaway for that period. However, the behaviour of this ratio for large (areas greater or equal than 100 msh) and small groups registered in COI during 1929?–?1941 is similar to data available from RGO for the periods 1874?–?1914 and 1950?–?1976. Nevertheless, while the average values and time evolution of the ratio in large groups are similar those for small groups according to the Coimbra data (1929?–?1941) it is not analogous for RGO data for the same period. We also found that the behaviour of the penumbra–umbra area ratio for smaller groups in both observatories is significantly different. The main difference between the area measurements made in Coimbra and RGO is associated with the umbra measurements. We would like to stress that the two observatories used different methods of observation and while in COI both methodology and instruments did not change during the study period, some changes were carried out in RGO that could have affected measurements of umbra and penumbra. These facts illustrate the importance of the careful recovery of past solar data.  相似文献
