We have simulated asteroid lightcurves for simple shape models using a realistic surface scattering law. The scattering law includes a shadowing function computed with numerical ray‐tracing. We computed lightcurves in a variety of illumination geometries for both the traditional Lommel–Seeliger law and our seminumerical law. We observe a shift in the rotational phase of the lightcurves, which depends on the parameters of the scattering law as well as the illumination geometry and the direction of the spin axis of the asteroid. This phase shift is always zero at opposition, and can be as large as 10° for illumination geometries typical for Main Belt asteroids. The phase shift has implications on the accuracy of other results which are based on asteroid lightcurve analysis, such as spin‐state or shape determination.  相似文献

Understanding the evolution of asteroid spin states is challenging work, in part because asteroids have a variety of orbits, shapes, spin states, and collisional histories but also because they are strongly influenced by gravitational and non-gravitational (YORP) torques. Using efficient numerical models designed to investigate asteroid orbit and spin dynamics, we study here how several individual asteroids have had their spin states modified over time in response to these torques (i.e., 951 Gaspra, 60 Echo, 32 Pomona, 230 Athamantis, 105 Artemis). These test cases which sample semimajor axis and inclination space in the inner main belt, were chosen as probes into the large parameter space described above. The ultimate goal is to use these data to statistically characterize how all asteroids in the main belt population have reached their present-day spin states. We found that the spin dynamics of prograde-rotating asteroids in the inner main belt is generally less regular than that of the retrograde-rotating ones because of numerous overlapping secular spin-orbit resonances. These resonances strongly affect the spin histories of all bodies, while those of small asteroids (?40 km) are additionally influenced by YORP torques. In most cases, gravitational and non-gravitational torques cause asteroid spin axis orientations to vary widely over short (?1 My) timescales. Our results show that (951) Gaspra has a highly chaotic rotation state induced by an overlap of the s and s6 spin-orbit resonances. This hinders our ability to investigate its past evolution and infer whether thermal torques have acted on Gaspra's spin axis since its origin.  相似文献

Asteroid families are the remnants of catastrophic collisions, and their fundamental physical properties provide us the information of their parent bodies and thereafter dynamical evolutions. Especially, the orbit and spin characteristics can reveal the influences of the Yarkovsky effect and the Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect on the evolution of the asteroid family, respectively. Based on the Asteroid Lightcurve Database (LCDB), the spin rate distribution of the Flora asteroid family is studied, and a tendency that the spin rates of the small Flora family members concentrate primarily in the range of 3–5 d?1 is found. The analysis on the spin states of the Flora family asteroids tells that most of these asteroid family members are in the prograde spinning state. However, for the Flora family members with an orbital semi-major axis smaller than 2.2 au, the ratio between the number of prograde spinning members and that of retrograde ones is close to that of the near-Earth asteroids, namely 1 : 3. Furthermore, for those prograde spinning Flora family asteroids with an orbital semi-major axis larger than 2.2 au, a portion of them exhibit the aggregation in the distribution of orbital semi-major axis against the absolute magnitude, and in which nine members show the features similar to the Slivan state.  相似文献

Among 11 673 of near-Earth objects (NEOs), 52 asteroids are identified, which, together with the Eccentrids meteor system, comprise a single population of small bodies of the Solar System with the smallest orbits of high eccentricity. Some features of this unique system of bodies are discussed in this paper. The distribution of perihelion longitudes is studied for the given group of asteroids and compared to that of the Aten asteroids, which are the most similar to the Eccentrids. The dependence is obtained of the character of perihelion longitude distribution on the eccentricities of the NEO orbits. Eight asteroid stream of the Eccentrids are found. The Eccentrids asteroids approaching the Earth’s orbit along its whole length in their aphelia can pose a certain hazard for the Earth.  相似文献

Abstract– To understand the nature of C asteroid surfaces, which are often related to phyllosilicates and C chondrites, we report near‐infrared spectra for a suite of phyllosilicates, heated to 100–1100 °C in 100 °C intervals, and compare the results for telescope IRTF spectra for 11 C asteroids. As C asteroids have relatively featureless spectra, we focus on “continuum plots” (1.0–1.75 μm slope against 1.8–2.5 μm slope). We compare the continuum plots of the 11 C asteroids and our heated phyllosilicates with literature data for C chondrites. The CI, CR, CK, and CV chondrite meteorites plot in the C asteroid field, whereas CM chondrites plot in a close but discrete field. All are well separated from the large phyllosilicate field. Heating kaolinite and montmorillonite to ≥700 °C moves their continua slopes into the C asteroid field, whereas chlorite and serpentine slopes move into the CM chondrite field. Water losses during heating are generally 10–15 wt% and were associated with a 20–70% albedo drop. Our data are consistent with surfaces of the C asteroids consisting of the dehydration products of montmorillonite whereas the CM chondrites are the dehydration products of serpentine and chlorite. The presence of opaque minerals and evaporites does not provide quantitative explanations for the difference in continua slopes of the phyllosilicates and C asteroids. The CM chondrites can also be linked to the C asteroids by heating. We suggest that the CM chondrites are interior samples, and the presence of a 3 μm feature in C asteroid spectra also indicates the excavation of material.  相似文献

We present the analysis of 20 years of time‐series BV photometry of the SB1 RS CVn binary HD 89546. The system's yearly mean V brightness, the BV color index, the photometric period, and the light curve amplitude all show clear cyclic variability with an ≈9‐year time scale. We also find some evidence for brightness variability on a time scale longer than the 20‐year time span of our observations, perhaps indicating a longer cycle analogous to the solar Gleissberg cycle. We estimate the unspotted V magnitude of HD 89546 to be 7.m154, which is ≈0.m2 brighter than the observed maximum brightness. Spot modelling of the system shows that spot temperature variations affect the observed BV color as well as the V brightness. Two active longitudes are observed, centered around 180° and 360° longitude on the G9 III primary, each covering a longitude range of 120°. Furthermore, two inactive longitude zones are seen spanning only 60° between the two active longitudes. The longitudinal distribution of the spots exhibits no strong cyclic variability but does show rapid jumps of 120° that look like the flip‐flop phenomenon. We estimate the differential rotation coefficient of the star as k = 0.086 by considering the range of observed photometric period variations and assumed latitudinal spot variations over 45° (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract— The Aerospace Corporation's broadband array spectrograph system (BASS) mounted on the NASA infrared telescope facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii was used to obtain spectral measurements of Mercury's thermal emission on 1998 March 21 (45–85° longitude), and on 1998 May 12 (68–108° longitude). The spectra show heterogeneous composition on Mercury's surface between longitudes 45–85° and about 68–108°. These observations include measurements from 3 to 6 μm, a spectral region not previously covered by mid‐infrared spectroscopy. Excellent quality data were obtained in the atmospheric windows between 3–4.2 and 4.6–5.5 μm. These wavelength regions exhibit high emissivity characteristic of a regolith with strong thermal gradients maintained in a vacuum environment with spectra dominated by grain sizes of ?30 μm. Emission peaks are present at 3.5 and 5 μm in the 45–85° longitude data. The 5 μm peak has been tentatively attributed to clinopyroxene. Data were also obtained in the 7.5–13.5 μm spectral region. Spectra obtained during both observing periods show well‐defined emissivity maxima (EM) in the spectral vicinity (between 7.7 and 9.2 μm) of the Christiansen frequency of silicate soils. The location of the EM for longitudes 45–85° (7.9 μm) is consistent with a surface composition of intermediate SiO2 content. The overall spectral shape is similar to that obtained previously at the same location with different instrumentation. In the region 68–108° longitude, three EM are observed at 7.8, 8.2, and 9.2 μm, indicating the presence of distinctly different surface composition from the other location. Comparisons of these data to other mid‐infrared spectra of Mercury's surface and asteroids, and of the different instrumentation used in observations are included.  相似文献

Trojan asteroids undergo very large perturbations because of their resonance with Jupiter. Fortunately the secular evolution of quasi circular orbits remains simple—if we neglect the small short period perturbations. That study is done in the approximation of the three dimensional circular restricted three-body problem, with a small mass ratio μ—that is about 0.001 in the Sun Jupiter case. The Trojan asteroids can be defined as celestial bodies that have a “mean longitude”, M + ω + Ω, always different from that of Jupiter. In the vicinity of any circular Trojan orbit exists a set of “quasi-circular orbits” with the following properties: (A) Orbits of that set remain in that set with an eccentricity that remains of the order of the mass ratio μ. (B) The relative variations of the semi-major axis and the inclination remain of the order of ${\sqrt{\mu}}$ . (C) There exist corresponding “quasi integrals” the main terms of which have long-term relative variations of the order of μ only. For instance the product c(1 – cos i) where c is the modulus of the angular momentum and i the inclination. (D) The large perturbations affect essentially the difference “mean longitude of the Trojan asteroid minus mean longitude of Jupiter”. That difference can have very large perturbations that are characteristics of the “horseshoes orbit”. For small inclinations it is well known that this difference has two stable points near ±60° (Lagange equilibrium points L4 and L5) and an unstable point at 180° (L3). The stable longitude differences are function of the inclination and reach 180° for an inclination of 145°41′. Beyond that inclination only one equilibrium remains: a stable difference at 180°.  相似文献

Rotational data on 321 asteroids observed as of late 1978 are analyzed. Selection effects within the sample are discussed and used to define a data set consisting of 134 main-belt, nonfamily asteroids having reliably determined periods and amplitudes based on photoelectric observations. In contrast to A. W. Harris and J. A. Burns (1979, Icarus40, 115–144) we found no significant correlation between rotational properties and compositional type. Smaller asteroids have a greater range of rotational amplitudes than the largest asteroids but are not, on the average, appreciably more elongated. While no definite relationship between asteroid size and rotation rate was found the distribution is not random. The largest asteroids have rotation periods near 7 hr compared with 10 hr for the smaller. A group of large, rapidly rotating, high-amplitude asteroids is recognized. A pronounced change in rotational properties occurs near this size range (diam = 200 ± 50 km) which also corresponds to the size at which a change of slope occurs in the size frequency distribution. We believe this size range represents a transition region between very large, rapidly rotating, low-amplitude (primordial?) objects and smaller ones having a considerably greater range of periods and amplitudes. Asteroids in this transition size range display an increase in rotational amplitude with increasing spin rate; other than this, however, there is no correlation between period and amplitude. The region of low spatial density in the asteroid belt centered near 2.9 AU and isolated from the inner and outer belt by the 2:5 and 3:7 commensurabilities is shown to be a region in which non-C or -S asteroids are overrepresented and which have marginally higher rotational amplitudes than those located in more dense regions. We attribute disagreements between our results and other studies of this type to the inclusion of non-main-belt asteroids and photographic data in the earlier analyses.  相似文献

Photometry results of 32 asteroids are reported from only seven observing nights on only seven fields, consisting of 34.11 cumulative hours of observations. The data were obtained with a wide-field CCD (40.5×27.3) mounted on a small, 46-cm telescope at the Wise Observatory. The fields are located within ±1.5° from the ecliptic plane and include a region within the main asteroid belt. The observed fields show a projected density of ∼23.7 asteroids per square degree to the limit of our observations. 13 of the lightcurves were successfully analyzed to derive the asteroids' spin periods. These range from 2.37 up to 20.2 h with a median value of 3.7 h. 11 of these objects have diameters in order of two kilometers and less, a size range that until recently has not been photometrically studied. The results obtained during this short observing run emphasize the efficiency of wide-field CCD photometry of asteroids, which is necessary to improve spin statistics and understand spin evolution processes. We added our derived spin periods to data from the literature and compared the spin rate distributions of small main belt asteroids (5>D>0.15 km) with that of bigger asteroids and of similar-sized NEAs. We found that the small MBAs do not show the clear Maxwellian-shaped distribution as large asteroids do; rather they have a spin rate distribution similar to that of NEAs. This implies that non-Maxwellian spin rate distribution is controlled by the asteroids' sizes rather than their locations.  相似文献

Our photometric observations of 18 main-belt binary systems in more than one apparition revealed a strikingly high number of 15 having positively re-observed mutual events in the return apparitions. Our simulations of the survey showed that it cannot be due to an observational selection effect and that the data strongly suggest that poles of mutual orbits between components of binary asteroids in the primary size range 3–8 km are not distributed randomly: The null hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of the orbit poles is rejected at a confidence level greater than 99.99%. Binary orbit poles concentrate at high ecliptic latitudes, within 30° of the poles of the ecliptic. We propose that the binary orbit poles oriented preferentially up/down-right are due to either of the two processes: (i) the YORP tilt of spin axes of their parent bodies toward the asymptotic states near obliquities 0° and 180° (pre-formation mechanism) or (ii) the YORP tilt of spin axes of the primary components of already formed binary systems toward the asymptotic states near obliquities 0° and 180° (post-formation mechanism). The alternative process of elimination of binaries with poles closer to the ecliptic by dynamical instability, such as the Kozai effect due to gravitational perturbations from the Sun, does not explain the observed orbit pole concentration. This is because for close binary asteroid systems, the gravitational effects of primary’s irregular shape dominate the solar-tide effect.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of polarization observations of asteroid 554 Peraga obtained with the UBVRI polarimeter using the 1.25 m telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory down to phase angles of 3.1°–16.6° from October to November 2006. The asteroid’s polarization phase curve is shown to have a negative branch with the parameters P min = −1.7% and αmin = 8.4°, which is typical of C-type asteroids. However, these data contradict the results of Zellner and Gradie (1976) obtained in March 1975 that the reflected light from the asteroid’s surface is positively polarized, ≈1% at phase angles of 8°–10°. Since the asteroid’s ecliptic longitudes differ by 160°-145° for the two observation periods, we discuss the possibility that the two sets of observations refer to the asteroid’s two hemispheres with different polarimetric properties.  相似文献

Abstract– We review the conditions under which explosive volcanism took place on early‐forming differentiated asteroids. The pressure‐dependent solubility of typical asteroid volatiles in melts implies that the gas driving explosive volcanism on asteroids less than approximately 100 km in diameter was probably present mainly as a free phase capable of accumulating into large gas bodies and, thus, causing slug flow in melts approaching the surface. In contrast, in asteroids larger than approximately 100 km the gas was probably present largely as a dispersion of small bubbles. We show that these gas distributions have implications for the size distribution of the pyroclastic droplets produced in explosive eruptions at the surface. All pyroclastic melt droplets are accelerated by the expanding gases, but their speeds lag the gas speed by a finite amount that is a function of the droplet size and density and the asteroid size and, hence, acceleration due to gravity. We compute pyroclast speeds and, by comparing them with escape velocities, we identify the critical pyroclast diameter on a given‐size asteroid that distinguishes droplets lost to space from droplets that return to the surface. Identification of asteroidal pyroclasts and measurements of their sizes could throw light on the amounts of gas driving eruptions.  相似文献

Data are presented for the 182 asteroids whose rotational properties are available in the literature. Plots are provided for the asteroid rotational frequency f and lightcurve amplitude Δm versus asteroid size; the latter is determined using standard methods if data are available but otherwise is estimated from asteroid albedos, selected depending on taxonomic type or orbital position. A linear least-squares fit to all the data shows that f increases with decreasing size, confirming McAdoo and Burns' (1973) result; this is demonstrated to be primarily caused by relatively more small non-C than C asteroids in our sample, coupled with a slower mean rotation rate for C asteroids (P ≈ 11 hr) than non-C asteroids (P ≈ 9 hr). In terms of the collisional theory of Harris (1979a), this means that the C's are less dense than the other minor planets. Any slight tendency for smaller asteroids to spin faster, even within a taxonomic type, could be due to selection effects; our data are not extensive enough to determine whether the very smallest (? 10-km diameter) spin especially fast. The minor planets of our survey become more irregular at smaller sizes, disputing the conclusions of Bowell (1977b), Degewij (1977), and Degewij et al. (1978), based on other, perhaps more complete, data; selection effects may account for this disagreement. Shapes do not appear to depend on taxonomic type. The dispersion of asteroid rotation rates from the mean is found to be in excellent agreement with a three-dimensional Maxwellian distribution, such as would be developed in a collisionally evolved system. The rotation axes, therefore, appear to be randomly oriented in space. Rotation pole positions are also tabulated and calculated to likely be constant in space over the extent of past observation. Observers are encouraged to measure the rotational properties of faint objects and asteroids of unusual taxonomic types, and to carry out long-time studies of asteroids which over short periods do not seem to vary.  相似文献

The sky‐projected orientation (position angle) of the axis (line of maximum density or maximum brightness) of the long time‐known, linear structure (LS) in the sunward hemisphere of the coma of Comet 19P/Borrelly is measured on 45 photographs taken by different observers under different projection conditions and covering three consecutive apparitions (1994, 2001, and 2008) for a total time interval of 5174 days. The analysis of the results by a tomographic approach yields an LS axis constantly oriented towards a fixed point in the space, at Right Ascension 214°.4 ± 0°.5 and Declination –7°.0 ± 0°.5 (J2000), corresponding to an obliquity of 103°.5 ± 1° and an orbital longitude of 147°.2 ± 1°, throughout the relevant interval. Such coordinates are close to the ones found by other authors for the spatial orientation of the nucleus spin axis during the apparitions of 1994 and 2001. In the hypothesis of an LS orientation aligned with the nucleus spin axis, the new results confirm the previous ones and show that this orientation remained unchanged during the subsequent 2008 apparition (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We study the longitudinal distribution of sunspot activity in 1917–1995 using vector sums of sunspot areas. The vector sum of sunspots of one solar rotation gives a total vector whose amplitude characterizes the size of longitudinal asymmetry and whose phase describes the location of the momentarily dominating longitude. We find that when the phase distributions are calculated separately for the ascending phase and maximum (AM) on the one hand and for the declining phase and minimum (DM) on the other hand, they behave differently and depict broad maxima around roughly opposite longitudes. While the maximum of the phase distribution for the AM period is found around the Carrington longitude of 180°, the maximum for the DM period is at the longitude of about 0°. This difference can be seen in both solar hemispheres, but it is more pronounced in the southern hemisphere where the phase distribution has a particularly clear pattern. No other division of data into two intervals leads to similar systematic differences.  相似文献

Dermott and Murray (1982) have found certain relations between mean spin frequency and mean diameter for asteroids. By assuming that matter gets compacted during the evolution of an asteroid, these relations may be explained by means of a spin formula for accreted bodies given by Alfvén and Arrhenius. We present a rough model for gravitational compaction of porous matter in asteroids, combine it with the spin formula, and fit the result to Dermott's and Murray's spin-diameter curves. The values obtained for the parameters (mass densities and material strengths) appear to be of a quite realistic order of magnitude.  相似文献
