A set of H chromospheric magnetograms at various wavelengths near the line center, chromospheric Dopplergrams, and photospheric vector magnetograms of a unipolar sunspot region near the solar limb were obtained with the vector video magnetograph at the Huairou Solar Observing Station. The superpenumbral chromospheric magnetic field is almost parallel to the surface at the outside of the sunspot penumbra, where the magnetic lines of force are mainly concentrated in the superpenumbral filaments. In the gaps between the filaments the chromospheric horizontal field is weak.  相似文献

The active region NOAA 6555 had several locations of highly sheared magnetic field structure, yet, only one of them was the site for all the five X-class flares during its disk passage in March 1991. The pre-flare observations of high-resolution H filtergrams, vector magnetograms and H Dopplergrams of the 2B/X5.3 flare on 25 March 1991 show that the flaring site was characterized by a new rising emerging flux region (EFR) near the highly sheared magnetic field configuration. The polarity axis of the emerging flux was nearly perpendicular to the pre-existing magnetic neutral line. The location of the EFR was the site of initial brightening in H. The post-flare magnetograms show higher magnetic shear at the flare location compared to the post-flare magnetograms, which might indicate that the EFR was sheared at the time of its emergence. As the new EFR coincided with the occurrence of the flare, we suggest that it might have triggered the observed flare. Observations from Big Bear Solar Observatory and Marshall Space Flight Center also show that there was emergence of new flux at the same location prior to two other X-class flares. We find that out of five observed X-class flares in NOAA 6555, at least in three cases there are clear signatures of flare-related flux emergence. Therefore, it is concluded that EFRs might play an important role in destabilizing the observed sheared magnetic structures leading to large X-class flares of NOAA 6555.  相似文献

The Big Bear videomagnetograph is calibrated using three methods. Longitudinal magnetograms are calibrated by using the differences in radial velocity of the Sun caused by solar rotation, or by measuring the line profile in the Zeeman-sensitive 6103 line used by the magnetograph system. Transverse magnetograms can be calibrated by obtaining spectra in the more magnetically sensitive 5250 line which measure the total magnetic field and then subtracting the longitudinal component. The calibration of the transverse magnetograms is in agreement with that obtained by line profile measurements. Observations of an active region on 1993 March 8 with both the magnetograph system and with the BBSO spectrograph showed that good agreement was found between all three methods, provided the effect of seeing on the magnetograms is allowed for. Magnetograph saturation does not occur for magnetic fields below about 2100 G.  相似文献

We describe an instrument we have built and installed at Mees Solar Observatory on Haleakala, Maui, to measure polarization in narrow-band solar images. Observations in Zeemansensitive photospheric lines have been made for nearly all solar active regions since the instrument began operations in 1992. The magnetograph includes a 28-cm aperture telescope, a polarization modulator, a tunable Fabry-Pérot filter, CCD cameras and control electronics. Stokes spectra of a photospheric line are obtained with 7 pm spectral resolution, 1 arc sec spatial resolution over a field 4.7 arc min square, and polarimetric precision of 0.1%. A complete vector magnetogram observation can be made every eight minutes. The flexibility of the instrument encourages diverse observations: besides active region magnetograms we have made, for example, composite vector magnetograms of the full solar disk, and H polarization movies of flaring regions.  相似文献

Photospheric (Fei 5324.19 Å line) and chromospheric (H line) magnetic fields in quiet-Sun regions have been observed in the solar disk center by using the vector video magnetograph at Huairou Solar Observing Station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. Observational results show that the quiet-Sun magnetic elements in the solar photosphere and chromosphere present similar magnetic structures. Photospheric and chromospheric magnetograms show corresponding time variations. This suggests that the magnetic fields in quiet-Sun regions present different 3-D magnetic configurations compared to those in solar active regions.  相似文献

Time sequences of vector magnetograms and H filtergrams of NOAA 7469 were obtained during 4–12 April 1993 at Huairou Solar Observing Station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. The region was characterized by the emergence of several new bipoles and the formation of active magnetic interfaces between newly emerging and pre-existing magnetic flux. Based on the 3-D magnetic lines of force, computed with the boundary element method (BEM), it has been found that the topology of magnetic lines of force changes when longitudinal magnetic fields evolve during the observing period. Two active magnetic interfaces were identified from 6 to 8 April in this region. By comparing H filtergrams with vector magnetograms of the photosphere and 3-D magnetic lines of force, it is found that many flares initiated at the active magnetic interfaces.  相似文献

This paper reviews studies of the relationship between the evolution of vector magnetic fields and the occurrence of major solar flares. Most of the data were obtained by the video magnetograph systems at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) and Huairou Solar Observatory (HSO). Due to the favorable weather and seeing conditions at both stations, high-resolution vector magnetograph sequences of many active regions that produced major flares during last solar maximum (1989–1993) have been recorded. We have analyzed several sequences of magnetograms to study the evolution of vector magnetic fields of flare productive active regions. The studies have focused on the following three aspects: (1) processes which build up magnetic shear in active regions; (2) the pre-flare magnetic structure of active regions; and (3) changes of magnetic shear immediately preceding and following major flares. We obtained the following results based on above studies: (1) Emerging flux regions (EFRs) play very important roles in the production of complicated photospheric flow patterns, magnetic shear and flares. (2) Although the majority of flares prefer to occur in magnetically sheared regions, many flares occurred in regions without strong photospheric magnetic shear. (3) We found that photospheric magnetic shear increased after all the 6 X-class flares studied by us. We want to emphasize that this discovery is not contradictory to the energy conservation principle, because a flare is a three-dimensional process, and the photosphere only provides a two-dimensional boundary condition. This argument is supported by the fact that if two initial ribbons of a flare are widely separated (which may correspond to a higher-altitude flare), the correlation of the flare with strong magnetic shear is weak; if the two ribbons of a flare are close (which may correspond to a lower-altitude flare), its correlation with the strong shear is strong. (4) We have analyzed 18 additional M-class flares observed by HSO in 1989 and 1990. No detectable shear change was found for all the cases. It is likely that only the most energetic flares can affect the photospheric magnetic topology.  相似文献

We compare vector magnetograms of active region NOAA 5747 observed by two very different polarimetric instruments: the imaging vector magnetograph of Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS) and the Haleakala Stokes Polarimeter of Mees Solar Observatory (MSO). Unlike previous comparative studies, we concentrate our attention on differences in observations and data reduction techniques that can affect the helicity computation. Overall, we find a qualitative agreement between the HSOS and MSO vector magnetograms. The HSOS data show slightly higher field strength, but the distribution of inclination angles is similar in measurements from the two instruments. There is a systematic difference (up to 20°) in the azimuths of transverse fields, which is roughly proportional to the longitudinal field strength. We estimate that Faraday rotation in the HSOS magnetograms contributes 12° in the azimuth difference if possible sources of error are taken into account. Next, we apply two independent methods to both data sets to resolve 180° azimuth ambiguity and to compute two helicity measures – the force-free field parameter best and the current helicity fractional imbalance h. The methods agree reasonably well in sign and value of the helicity measures, but the HSOS magnetograms show systematically smaller values of h and best in agreement with an expected contribution of Faraday rotation. Finally, we discuss the role of Faraday rotation in computation of best and h and conclude that it does not affect the strength of the hemispheric helicity rule. The strength of the rule appears to be related to a helicity parameter: best shows weaker hemispheric asymmetry than h.  相似文献

This paper studies the evolution of vector magnetic fields in the active region Boulder No. 6233 during an 11-hour observing period and its relationship to an X-3 flare on August 27, 1990.We observed the evolution of magnetic fields, which includes magnetic shear build-up, directly in high-resolution vector magnetograph movies. The magnetic shear is observed to be built up in two ways: (1) shear motion between two poles of opposite magnetic polarities and (2) direct collision of two poles of opposite polarities. When two magnetic elements of opposite polarities are canceling, the field lines are observed to turn from direct connection (potential) to a sheared configuration during the process. An X-3 flare occurred at 2100 UT. The vector magnetic structure showed an unexpected pattern of changes during and after the flare. The shear (defined as the angle between the measured transverse field and the calculated potential field) in the area covering two major footpoints increased rapidly coinciding with the burst of GOES X-ray flux. While the flare faded away in about one hour, the high shear status dropped slowly for the remainder of the observing period. Immediately after the flare, new flux emerged more rapidly and the flow speed of several magnetic elements increased near the flare footpoints. In this active region and a few other flare-productive regions we have studied recently, we always find rapid and complicated flow motions near the sites where flares occur. Photospheric flows appear to be another important factor for the production of flares.  相似文献

A time sequence of magnetograms and velocity-grams in the H and Fe i 6569 Å lines has been made at a rate of 12 h–1 of McMath Region 10385 from 26 to 29 October, 1969. The 14 flares observed during this period have been studied in relation to the configuration and changes in the magnetic and velocity fields. There was little correlation between flare position and the evolutionary changes in the photospheric magnetic and velocity field, except at large central meridian distances where the velocity observations suggested shearing taking place at flare locations. At central meridian distances > 30° we found that flares are located in areas of low line-of-sight photospheric velocity surrounded by higher velocity hills. The one exception to this was the only flare which produced a surge. Blue-shifted velocity changes in the photosphere of 0.3 to 1 km s–1 were observed in localized areas at the times of 8 of 14 flares studied.Visiting Astronomer, Kitt Peak National Observatory.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We present H CCD observations of three small-to-medium-size two-ribbon flares observed in the giant AR 9433 on 24 April 2001. Flare observations at other associated wavelengths (e.g., soft X-rays (SXR), hard X-rays (HXR), microwaves (MW)) obtained from archives are also presented and compared. We have tested the Neupert effect for the most energetic third flare. The flare observations are in agreement with the thick-target model. In the case of this flare the HXR emitting electrons appears to be the heating source of SXR and H emissions. The flares are also studied in EUV and UV emissions using TRACE data. We discuss the complexity of the magnetic field using SOHO/MDI magnetograms. The flares are observed to occur in both (f/p) polarity regions in highly sheared magnetic field with emerging flux regions and MMFs.  相似文献

A sub-flare and surge were observed on June 13, 1990, with the Marshall Space Flight Center vector magnetograph and coaligned H telescope. This activity occurred at the site of a parasitic polarity near a large, mature sunspot. Analysis of the vector magnetic field showed that while flux emergence and other field changes occurred sporadically throughout a period of 4 days, the sub-flare and surge only took place after an increase in magnetic shear in the field of the parasitic polarity. This event also provided an example of relaxation of magnetic shear following the flare and surging.  相似文献

We have analyzed the H filtergrams and vector magnetograms of the active region NOAA 7070, in which a 3B/X3.3 flare occurred on February 27, 1992. The average area per sunspot of this active region was in declining phase at the time of the flare. The vector magnetograms indicate that the magnetic field was non-potential at the flaring site. Besides non-potentiality, the longitudinal field gradient was found to be the highest at the region showing initial H brightening. Further, in H filtergrams no appreciable change in the morphology of the filament tracing the magnetic neutral line was noticed in the post-flare stage. Also, the photospheric vector magnetograms show considerable shear in post-flare magnetic field of the active region. In this paper we present the observations and discuss the possible mechanism responsible for the 3B/X3.3 flare.  相似文献

Average (over longitude and time) photospheric magnetic field components are derived from 3 Stanford magnetograms made near the solar minimum of cycle 21. The average magnetograph signal is found to behave as the projection of a vector for measurements made across the disk. The poloidal field exhibits the familiar dipolar structure near the poles, with a measured signal in the line Fe i 5250 Å of 1 G. At low latitudes the poloidal field has the polarity of the poles, but is of reduced magnitude ( 0.1 G). A net photospheric toroidal field with a broad latitudinal extent is found. The polarity of the toroidal field is opposite in the nothern and southern hemispheres and has the same sense as subsurface flux tubes giving rise to active regions of solar cycle 21.These observations are used to discusse large-scale electric currents crossing the photosphere and angular momentum loss to the solar wind. Now at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Tucson, Ariz. 85726, U.S.A.  相似文献

Super-active region NOAA 6555 was highly flare productive during the period March 21st–27th, 1991 of its disk passage. We have st udied its chromospheric activity using high spatial resolution Hα filtergrams taken at Udaipur along with MSFC vector magnetograms. A possible relationship of flare productivity and the variation in shear has been explored. Flares were generally seen in those subareas of the active region which possessed closed magnetic field configuration, whereas only minor flares and/or surges occurred in subareas showing open magnetic field configuration. Physical mechanisms responsible for the observed surges are also discussed.  相似文献

The locations of flares and chromospheric absorption features on May 21 and 23, 1967, are compared with a series of H magnetograms. Each of the four major flares included in the study developed as double emission ribbons lying at positions of steep field gradient on opposite sides of the boundary between regions of opposite magnetic polarity. At certain stages, the flare outlines followed closely the isogauss contours of the longitudinal field. A fluctuating field of 75 gauss was measured directly in the importance two flare of May 21. Modifications in the magnetic structure of the active region followed the flares of May 23.  相似文献

A series of H chromospheric magnetograms was obtained at various wavelengths near the line center with the vector video magnetograph at Huairou Solar Observing Station as a diagnostic of chromospheric magnetic structures. The two-dimensional distribution of the circular polarization light of the H line with its blended lines at various wavelength in active regions was obtained, which consists of the analyses of Stokes' profileV of this line. Due to the disturbance of the photospheric blended line Fei 4860.98 for the measurement of the chromospheric magnetic field, a reversal in the chromospheric magnetograms relative to the photospheric ones occurs in the sunspot umbrae. But in the quiet, plage regions, even penumbrae, the influence of the photospheric blended Fei 4860.98 line is not obvious. As regards the observation of the H chromospheric magnetograms, we can select the working wavelength between -0.20 and -0.24 from the line core of H to avoid the wavelengths of the photospheric blended lines in the wing of H.After the spectral analysis of chromospheric magnetograms, we conclude that the distribution of the chromospheric magnetic field is similar to the photospheric field, especially in the umbrae of the sunspots. The chromospheric magnetic field is the result of the extension of the photospheric field.  相似文献

NOAA 5747 was a flare-productive active region during its transit across the solar disk in October 1989. After the resolution of the 180° ambiguity of the transverse field synthetically, and transformation of vector magnetograms from the image plane to the heliographic frame, we have determined the distribution of the photospheric vertical electric current density in the active region. By analyzing the evolution of vector magnetograms and vertical current over a 6-day period (October 17–22) in the active region, we get the following results: (1) Two magnetic fluxes of opposite polarities emerged synchronously with their separating motion, one of which converged with an old magnetic structure and caused a number of flares. (2) There appeared a new current system, with the emergence of the fluxes. (3) The initial H bright kernels occurred in the vicinity of the neutral line of vertical current (J z = 0) with a steep gradient, but not just on the sites of vertical current peaks. (4) The flares were probably triggered by the interaction between the new emerging electric current system and old current system.  相似文献

In this paper, the chromospheric magnetic structures and their relation to the photospheric vector magnetic field in the vicinity of a dark filament in active region 5669 have been demonstrated. Structural variations are shown in chromospheric magnetograms after a solar flare. Filament-like structures in the chromospheric magnetograms occurred after a solar flare. They correspond to the reformation of the chromospheric dark filament, but there is no obvious variation of the photospheric magnetic field. We conclude that (a) some of the obvious changes of the chromospheric magnetic fields occurred after the flare, and (b) a part of these changes is perhaps due to flare brightening in the chromospheric H line.During the reforming process of the dark filament, a part of its chromospheric velocity field shows downward flow, and it later shows upward flow.  相似文献

Joint vector magnetograph observations were carried out at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO), Huairou Solar Observing Station (Huairou), and Mees Solar Observatory (MSO) in late September 1989. Comparisons of vector magnetograms obtained at the three stations show a high degree of consistency in the morphology of both longitudinal and transverse fields. Quantitative comparisons show the presence of noise, cross-talk between longitudinal field and transverse field, Faraday rotation and signal saturation effects in the magnetograms. We have tried to establish how the scatter in measurements from different instruments is apportioned between these sources of error.  相似文献
