Measurements on board the low altitude polar orbiting satellite Intercosmos-17 /nearly circular orbit h = 500 km, i = 83.5°/ have shown relatively high fluxes of high energy electrons /Ee > 100 MeV and Ee > 300 MeV respeetively/ at minimum-B-equator. Computation of the electron production spectra assuming the interaction of high energy protons of the inner radiation belt with residual atmosphere is made. The considered mechanism can explain the enhanced flux of high energy electrons registered in the Brazil magnetic anomaly.  相似文献

This paper discusses the relationship between some characteristics of microwave type IV radio bursts and solar cosmic ray protons of MeV energy. It is shown that the peak flux intensity of those bursts is almost linearly correlated with the MeV proton peak flux observed by satellites near the Earth and that protons and electrons would be accelerated simultaneously by a similar mechanism during the explosive phase of solar flares.Brief discussion is given on the propagation of solar cosmic rays in the solar envelope after ejection from the flare regions.  相似文献

A balloon borne counter telescope with a gas Cerenkov counter is used to measure the energy of primary cosmic ray electrons between 2 and 200 GeV. Electrons are identified by the characteristic electron-photon shower which they produce in a 15 radiation length deep stack of high-Z material interleaved with scintillation counters. Calibrations with monoenergetic electrons up to 14 GeV and monoenergetic protons up to 28 GeV from accelerators are used to develop criteria to statistically separate electrons from proton induced events. The results from six balloon flights (total exposure time 63 hours) are combined to obtain the electron energy spectrum. Up to about 30 GeV the spectrum measured in this experiment can be directly checked with calibrations and agrees well with results from other experiments. Above this energy the flux reported here is somewhat higher than the determinations reported by most other authors. We do not attach significance to an apparent flattening of the energy spectrum above 50 GeV. There is no evidence for a steepening of the spectrum at energies below 200 GeV.Work supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant NGL 14-001-005.Also Department of Physics.NSF trainee (1965–1969).  相似文献

The Energetic and Relativistic Nuclei and Electron (ERNE) experiment will investigate the solar atmosphere and the heliosphere by detecting particles produced in various kinds of energy release processes. ERNE is at the upper end in energy among the SOHO particle instruments. The instrument will measure the energy spectra of elements in the range Z=1–30. The energy coverage varies dependent on the particle species from a few MeV/n up to a few hundred MeV/n and electrons from 2 to 50 MeV. At high energies, ERNE records also the direction of the incident particles for accurate measurements of the pitch angle distribution of the ambient flux within the viewing cone. Especially the isotope identification capability has been one of the instrument design goals, thus providing new data regarding various fundamental questions in solar physics.  相似文献

The Solar Electron and Proton Telescope (SEPT) aboard the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) is designed to provide the three-dimensional distribution of energetic electrons and protons with good energy and time resolution. Each SEPT instrument consists of two double-ended magnet–foil particle telescopes which cleanly separate and measure electrons in the energy range from 30 keV to 400 keV and protons from 60 keV to 7000 keV. Anisotropy information on a non-spinning spacecraft is provided by two separate but identical instruments: SEPT-E aligned along the Parker spiral magnetic field in the ecliptic plane looking both towards and away from the Sun, and SEPT-NS aligned vertical to the ecliptic plane looking towards North and South. The dual set-up refers to two adjacent sensor apertures for each of the four viewing directions SUN, ANTISUN, NORTH, and SOUTH: one for protons, one for electrons. In this contribution a simulation of SEPT utilizing the GEANT4 toolkit has been set up with an extended instrument model in order to calculate improved response functions of the four different telescopes. Here we applied these response functions to quiet-time periods during the minimum between Solar Cycles 23 and 24 (SC-23 and SC-24) when the flux of ions above 10 MeV is dominated by galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The corresponding spectra are determined by a force-field approximation and used as input for our calculation, leading to good agreement of the computed ion count rates with measurements of SEPT above 400 keV.  相似文献

The data on optical, X-ray and gamma emission from proton flares, as well as direct observations of flare-associated phenomena, show energetic proton acceleration in the corona rather than in the flare region. In the present paper, the acceleration of protons and accompanying relativistic electrons is accounted for by a shock wave arising during the development of a large flare. We deal with a regular acceleration mechanism due to multiple reflection of resonance protons and fast electrons from a collisionless shock wave front which serves as a moving mirror. The height of the most effective acceleration in the solar corona is determined. The accelerated particle energy and density are estimated. It is shown in particular that a transverse collisionless shock wave may produce the required flux of protons with energy of 10 MeV and of relativistic electrons of 1–10 MeV.The proposed scheme may also serve as an injection mechanism when the protons are accelerated up to relativistic energies by other methods.  相似文献

It is shown that the correlation takes place between the 4–7 MeV gamma–ray line flare fluence F4–7 and the intensity of the > 10 MeV proton flux in the interplanetary space as well as between F4–7 and the peak flux density of microwave bursts. Besides, the energy spectral index of protons displays the definite dependence from parameters of the radio burst frequency spectrum. These testify that: a) there is a close physical association between the acceleration of electrons and protons in flares; b) protons, giving gamma–ray lines, and ones, registered in the interplanetary space, belong to the same population.  相似文献

The result on λ-rays obtained from the analysis of 5800 orbits of data from the University of Rochester telescope on board the OSO-3 satellite are presented. For γ-rays of energy greater than 100 MeV, an upper limit of 2.3×10?4 cm?2 s?1 std has been placed on the diffuse (assumed isotropic) flux. An upper limit to the flux from the Sun is set at 3.2×10?5 and 2.4×10?5 cm?2 s?1 for energies greater than 50 MeV and 100 MeV, respectively. All flux values are calculated assuming a π0-decay source of γ-rays.  相似文献

An indirect proton flux measuring tool based on discrimination of the energy deposited by protons in 128 × 128 pixel EIT CCD areas outside the solar disk images is presented. Single pixel intensity events are converted into proton incident energy flux using modeled energy deposition curves for angles of incidence ±60° in four EIT spatial areas with different proton stopping power. The extracted proton flux is corrected for both the loss of one‐pixel events in the range of angles of incidence as well as for the contribution to the single pixel events resulting from scattered middle‐energy protons (low‐energy or high‐energy particles are stopped by the EIT components or pass through them, accordingly). A simple geometrical approach was found and applied to correct for a non‐unique relation between the proton‐associated CCD output signal and the incident proton energy. With this geometrical approximation four unique proton incident energy ranges were determined as 45–49, 145–154, 297–335, and 390–440 MeV. The indirect proton flux measuring tool has been tested by comparing Solar Energetic Particles (SEP) flux temporal profiles extracted from the EIT CCD frames and downloaded from the GOES database for the Bastille Day (BD) of 2000 July 14 and the more recent 2005 January 20 events. The SEP flux temporal profiles and proton spectra extracted from the EIT in the relatively narrow energy ranges between 45 and 440 MeV reported here are consistent with the related GOES profiles. The four additional EIT extracted ranges provide higher energy resolution of the SEP data. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy with (or without) a bar-like central structure. There is evidence that the distribution of suspected cosmic ray sources, such as supernova remnants, are associated with the spiral arm structure of galaxies. It is yet not clearly understood what effect such a cosmic ray source distribution has on the particle transport in our Galaxy. We investigate and measure how the propagation of Galactic cosmic rays is affected by a cosmic ray source distribution associated with spiral arm structures. We use the PICARD code to perform high-resolution 3D simulations of electrons and protons in galactic propagation scenarios that include four-arm and two-arm logarithmic spiral cosmic ray source distributions with and without a central bar structure as well as the spiral arm configuration of the NE2001 model for the distribution of free electrons in the Milky Way. Results of these simulation are compared to an axisymmetric radial source distribution. Also, effects on the cosmic ray flux and spectra due to different positions of the Earth relative to the spiral structure are studied. We find that high energy electrons are strongly confined to their sources and the obtained spectra largely depend on the Earth’s position relative to the spiral arms. Similar finding have been obtained for low energy protons and electrons albeit at smaller magnitude. We find that even fractional contributions of a spiral arm component to the total cosmic ray source distribution influences the spectra on the Earth. This is apparent when compared to an axisymmetric radial source distribution as well as with respect to the Earth’s position relative to the spiral arm structure. We demonstrate that the presence of a Galactic bar manifests itself as an overall excess of low energy electrons at the Earth.Using a spiral arm geometry as a cosmic ray source distributions offers a genuine new quality of modeling and is used to explain features in cosmic ray spectra at the Earth that are else-wise attributed to other propagation effects. We show that realistic cosmic ray propagation scenarios have to acknowledge non-axisymmetric source distributions.  相似文献

A Radiation Belt Monitor (RBM) sensitive to protons and electrons with energy 0.5 MeV1 has been designed for the High Energy Transient Experiment (HETE) satellite in order to: first, control the on-off configuration of the experiments (i.e. those susceptible to proton damage); and second, to indicate the presence of proton and/or electron events that could masquerade as legitimate high energy photon events. One of the two RBM channels has an enhanced sensitivity to electrons. Each channel of the RBM, based on a PIN silicon diode, requires a typical power of 6 milliwatts. Tests have been performed with protons with energies from 0.1 to 2.5 MeV (generated by a Cockcroft-Walton linear accelerator via the d(d,p)t reaction), and with electrons with energies up to 1 MeV (from a 1.0 µCi207Bi source).  相似文献

The trapping of energetic electrons and protons in a simple, arched magnetic field imbedded in the lower solar atmosphere was considered. The lifetime of electrons with kinetic energies up to about 1.5 MeV was found to be completely determined by the motion of the mirror points, provided the gyro-synchrotron loss can be neglected. The same motion also influences the lifetimes of more energetic electrons, up to 10 MeV. This was not found to be the case for protons in the range from 1 MeV to 100 GeV. Some fluid and streaming instabilities were also considered; they pull the particles upward, raise their mirror points, and increase their lifetime. The emission of gyro-synchrotron radiation and bremsstrahlung in this model has been related to observations. Using the duration of non-thermal X-ray peaks given by Kane (1969), the altitude of injection of energetic particles was estimated.  相似文献

Using realistic models of cosmic-ray propagation in interplanetary space we present, for electrons, protons and helium nuclei of a given energy near Earth, calculations of their distribution in energy before entering the solar cavity and their mean energy loss. Interplanetary conditions appropriate for the epochs 1965 and 1969 have been used. Cosmic-ray energies in the range of 20 MeV/nucleon to 1000 MeV/nucleon have been considered.  相似文献

The diurnal variation of the high latitude outer zone boundary at 1400km has been determined for electrons ?140keV electrons, and for protons in two energy intervals: 0.56?E?1.1 MeV, 1.1?E?3.2 MeV, from detectors aboard the NOAA-2 satellite. The dependence of the 140 keV electron boundary on Dst has been examined as well?. A wel?l defined correlation of boundary position with Dst is found to exist during the main phase of disturbances, together with an evident local time dependence. All the boundaries are found to be consistent witn the supposition of adiabatic drift and demonstrate the stability of the boundary position over approximately ten years of comparable observation. No statistically significant hemispheric differences in boundary location were observed to occur.  相似文献

A joint analysis is carried out of data obtained with the help of the solar X-ray SphinX spectrophotometer and the electron and proton satellite telescope STEP-F in May 2009 in the course of the scientific space experiment CORONAS-PHOTON. In order to determine the energies and particle types, in the analysis of spectrophotometer records data are used on the intensities of electrons, protons, and secondary γ-radiation, obtained by the STEP-F telescope, which was located in close proximity to the SphinX spectrophotometer. The identical reaction of both instruments is noted at the intersection of regions of the Brazilian magnetic anomaly and the Earth’s radiation belts. It is shown that large area photodiodes, serving as sensors of the X-ray spectrometer, reliably record electron fluxes of low and intermediate energies, as well as fluxes of the secondary gamma radiation from construction materials of detector modules, the TESIS instrument complex, and the spacecraft itself. The dynamics of electron fluxes, recorded by the SphinX spectrophotometer in the vicinity of a weak geomagnetic storm, supplements the information about the processes of radial diffusion of electrons, which was studied using the STEP-F telescope.  相似文献

The STEP-F satellite telescope for measuring electrons and protons of the Photon scientific equipment is described. Its design features are given. The device detects electrons, protons, and α-particles in the energy range 0.18–2.3, 7.4–55.2, and 298–160.0 MeV, respectively. Geometric factors vary in the range of 12.4–21.7 cm2 sr, depending on the energy of the particles. In addition, there are three channels of mixed recording of particles of different types and channels of recording of the secondary electromagnetic radiation generated in the construction materials of the device and spacecraft. Methods and results of the computer simulation of the passage of the particle through detector materials are presented, along with configuration, calibration measurements, and tests (both standalone and integrated) within the complex of scientific instrumentation and spacecraft. Updated data on geometric factors of the device and energy ranges of the direct detection of charged high-energy particles and of channels of mixed recording of several types of particles are given. Special software is described for the rapid analysis of the processed data of the STEP-F telescope, and the visualization of time variations of particle fluxes with different time resolution in some periods of high solar activity and in its absence.  相似文献

Charged Particle Monitor (CPM) on-board the Astrosat satellite is an instrument designed to detect the flux of charged particles at the satellite location. A Cesium Iodide Thallium (CsI(Tl)) crystal is used with a Kapton window to detect protons with energies greater than 1 MeV. The ground calibration of CPM was done using gamma-rays from radioactive sources and protons from particle accelerators. Based on the ground calibration results, energy deposition above 1 MeV are accepted and particle counts are recorded. It is found that CPM counts are steady and the signal for the onset and exit of South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) region are generated in a very reliable and stable manner.  相似文献

Quite an unusual behavior of the low-energy ion fluxes measured with the LECP and CRS instruments onboard Voyager 1, which is located in the outer heliosphere at a distance of about 90 AU, has been observed since July 2002 until recently (February 2003). This behavior can be interpreted as a possible manifestation of a combination of the global heliospheric disturbance produced by solar activity and the precursor of the outer heliosphere with its termination shock. The extremely large variability of the enhanced ion fluxes since the second half of 2002 in several energy channels from 0.5 to several MeV/nucleon is presumed to be associated with the sources of their acceleration near the termination shock. The simultaneous increase in the flux of protons with energies above 70 MeV may result from the easier penetration of Galactic cosmic rays because of the reduction in modulation at the declining phase in the current solar cycle 23 after the maximum in 2000 and from an admixture of the anomalous component accelerated at the termination shock.  相似文献

Based on the results from three balloon flights, made at Hyderabad(7.6°N geomagnetic latitude) using omnidirectional gamma ray spectrometers, the different aspects of the low energy atmospheric gamma rays at equatorial latitudes in the energy interval 100 keV to 1 MeV are investigated and detailed discussion is presented. The energy loss spectrum in this energy range is found to consist of a continuum superimposed on which is a photopeak due to 0.51 MeV line arising from electron positron annihilation. The continuous background spectrum is similar to that observed at mid and high latitudes. The intensity of 0.51 MeV line is estimated to be 0.079 ± 0.01 photons cm−2 sec−1 at 6 g cm−2 over Hyderabad and the altitude dependence of its intensity is established for this low latitude station. The latitude effect of the intensity of this line at 6 g cm−2 is derived for the first time by comparing the results of the present measurements with those available for mid and high latitudes. The contribution of the cosmic gamma rays to the observed count rates at 6 g cm−2 is shown to be negligible in the case of the omnidirectional spectrometers of the type used in the present observations even for low latitude stations.  相似文献

Various topological features, for example magnetic null points and separators, have been inferred as likely sites of magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the solar atmosphere. In fact, magnetic reconnection is not constrained to solely take place at or near such topological features and may also take place in the absence of such features. Studies of particle acceleration using non-topological reconnection experiments embedded in the solar atmosphere are uncommon. We aim to investigate and characterise particle behaviour in a model of magnetic reconnection which causes an arcade of solar coronal magnetic field to twist and form an erupting flux rope, crucially in the absence of any common topological features where reconnection is often thought to occur. We use a numerical scheme that evolves the gyro-averaged orbit equations of single electrons and protons in time and space, and simulate the gyromotion of particles in a fully analytical global field model. We observe and discuss how the magnetic and electric fields of the model and the initial conditions of each orbit may lead to acceleration of protons and electrons up to 2 MeV in energy (depending on model parameters). We describe the morphology of time-dependent acceleration and impact sites for each particle species and compare our findings to those recovered by topologically based studies of three-dimensional (3D) reconnection and particle acceleration. We also broadly compare aspects of our findings to general observational features typically seen during two-ribbon flare events.  相似文献
