The energy and angular distributions of electrons have been studied by combining small angle scatterings using analytical treatment with large angle collisions using Monte Caroo calculations as a function of column density for initially power-law electron distributions and incidence angles of 0, 30, and 60°. Using these distributions the X-ray and EUV line flux as a function of column density has been computed. The flux increases with increase in column density. At the initial column densities the contribution of non-thermal electrons for the production of line flux is negligible. However, it becomes significant at intermediate column densities at which the electron energy and angular distributions have non-Maxwellian nature. X-ray and EUV flux have also been calculated as a function of electron spectral index at a fixed column density. It falls steeply with increase in spectral index. The calculated flux is compared with the observations.  相似文献

We studied the spectral properties of the electron cyclotron maser emission generated by anisotropic distributions of fast electrons with power-law magnitude distributions in solar flares. The natural bandwidth of the generated spectral line depends significantly on the angle between the direction of the wave emission and the direction of the magnetic field in the source. In addition, the line bandwidth depends on the parameters of the momentum and pitch-angle distribution functions for fast electrons. The typical spectral bandwidths are shown to lie within the range 0.1–0.4%, in agreement with the minimum observable bandwidths of millisecond solar radio spikes.  相似文献

Fine time variation of hard X-rays has been explained in terms of a spread in the angle of incidence of the source electrons in non-thermal thick-target model for bremsstrahlung generation. The electron energy and angular distributions have been calculated by combining small angle scatterings using analytical treatment with a large angle collision using Monte Carlo calculations as a function of column density. The incidence angles of electrons are taken as 0, 30, and 60°. Using the Bethe-Heitler cross section and the above calculated electron distributions, the bremsstrahlung flux for different photon energies as a function of column density has been studied. The computed X-ray pulse as a function of column density has been converted into time profile. It corresponds well with the observed fine time structure. The calculated spectra of X-rays at the peak and valley are also consistent with the observations. The variation of photon flux with time has also been computed for photon energies 20, 50, and 100 keV for 90 and 180° observation angles together with the changes in spectral shapes of photon energy spectrum at different times for 90 and 180° observation angles.  相似文献

The energy and angular distribution of electrons as a function of column densities initially for monoenergetic and monodirectional electron beams and incidence angles of 0‡, 30‡ and 60‡ have been studied by combining small angle scattering using analytical treatment with large angle collisions using Monte Carlo calculations. Using these distributions, X-ray and EUV-line flux have been studied as a function of column density. It is observed that the line flux increases with the increase in column density, becoming significant at intermediate column densities where the electron energies and angular distributions have a non-Maxwellian nature.  相似文献

Electron spectra obtained during the flight of Black Brant VB-31 on August 17, 1970 through a stable aurora to a height of 268 km have been analyzed in detail to obtain the pitch angle distributions from 25 to 155° and the electron energy distributions over an energy range of 18 keV to 20 eV through the region of atmospheric interaction down to 97 km. Backscatter ratios for 140° pitch angle range from 0.065 for 18 keV electrons to 0.22 for 1 keV electrons. Backscatter of lower energy electrons decreases with atmospheric depth below 200 km. The effect of the interactions between auroral electrons and the atmosphere is such as to give a peak in electron flux which moves progressively to higher energies with penetration depth. The secondary electron flux increases monotonically with height up to 200 km. The secondary electron spectrum can be approximated by an energy power over small energy ranges but its form is somewhat dependent on height and on the primary electron spectrum.  相似文献

The spatial and angular distributions and also the energy spectrum of hard X-rays from solar flares have been studied in terms of the energy and angular distributions of the accelerated electron beam. The incident electron distributions as functions of column density have been computed by combining the analytical treatment of small-angle scattering with the Monte-Carlo calculations for large angle scattering. To start with monoenergetic electrons at 0°, 30°, and 60° incidence angles have been taken. Using the Bethe-Heitler total cross section and the Sauter differential cross section along with the calculated electron distributions, the bremsstrahlung flux and its angular distribution for different photon energies > 10 keV have been studied as function of column density. The shape of the calculated curves agrees with the observations of PVO/ISEE-3 lending support to the beamed thick-target model for X-ray generation with continuous injection.Physics Department, Vishwa Bharti Institution, Rainawari, Srinagar, India.  相似文献

In solar extreme ultraviolet spectra the He  i and He  ii resonance lines show unusual behaviour and have anomalously high intensities compared with other transition region lines. The formation of the helium resonance lines is investigated through extensive non-local thermal equilibrium radiative transfer calculations. The model atmospheres of Vernazza, Avrett & Loeser are found to provide reasonable matches to the helium resonance line intensities but significantly overestimate the intensities of other transition region lines. New model atmospheres have been developed from emission measure distributions derived by Macpherson & Jordan, which are consistent with SOHO observations of transition region lines other than those of helium. These models fail to reproduce the observed helium resonance line intensities by significant factors. The possibility that non-Maxwellian electron distributions in the transition region might lead to increased collisional excitation rates in the helium lines is studied. Collisional excitation and ionization rates are recomputed for distribution functions with power-law suprathermal tails that may form by the transport of fast electrons from high-temperature regions. Enhancements of the helium resonance line intensities are found, but many of the predictions of the models regarding line ratios are inconsistent with observations. These results suggest that any such departures from Maxwellian electron distributions are not responsible for the helium resonance line intensities.  相似文献

We consider the evolution of a long-lived coronal hole (CH) from February to August 2002 in the zone φ = ?20°…+15°, L = 30°–35°. Active structures emerged in it several times over its lifetime. After their disappearance, the CH was restored to its original form. The Carrington rotation R1989 from May 12 to May 26, 2002, is considered in detail. The relative CH areas have been determined for this rotation from observations in the HeI 1083 nm line. Based on observations in the NiI 676.8 nm line (SOHO, MDI), we have found the periods of the line-of-sight velocity variations. The variations of these periods in CHs are qualitatively compared with those of the CH areas. The oscillation periods in photospheric CH layers have been found to correlate linearly with the CH areas in the chromosphere. For the interval of observations May 12–26, 2002, we have identified 52 sites in CHs for which the area variations in the HeI 1083 nm line were estimated. For times close to the observations in the HeI 1083 nm line, we have determined the average velocities of vertical motion of matter from MDI data. The CH growth and decay have been found to be accompanied, respectively, by upward and downward motions of matter at the photospheric level.  相似文献

The Carte Synoptique catalogue of solar filaments from 1919 March to 1957 July, corresponding to complete cycles 16‐18, is utilized to show the latitudinal migrations of solar filaments at low (≤50°) and high (>50°) latitudes and the latitudinal distributions of solar filaments for all solar filaments, solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are less than or equal to 70° and solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are larger than 70°. The results show the following. (1) The latitudinal migrations of all low‐latitude solar filaments and low‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are less than or equal to 70° follow the Spörer sunspot law. However, the latitudinal migration of low‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are larger than 70° do not follow the Spörer sunspot law: there is no equatorward and no poleward drift. The latitudinal migration of high‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are larger than 70° is more significant than those of all high‐latitude solar filaments and high‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are less than or equal to 70°: there is a poleward migration from the latitude of about 50° to 70° and an equatorward migration from the latitude of about 70° to 50° of all high‐latitude solar filaments and high‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are less than or equal to 70° and there is a poleward migration from the latitude of about 50° to 80° and an equatorward migration from the latitude of about 80° to 50° of high‐latitude solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are larger than 70°. (2) The statistical characteristics of latitudinal distribution of solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are larger than 70° is different from those of all solar filaments and solar filaments whose maximum lengths during solar disk passage are less than or equal to 70° (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We analyze the polarization effects of the radiation scattered in conical optically thin plasma envelopes. The density of free electrons in the envelope is assumed to decrease in inverse proportion to the square of the distance from the radiation source. The magnetic field, radial or azimuthal, is also assumed to vary in inverse proportion to the square of the distance from the center of the system. We take into account the fact that the scattered radiation near the surface of a star or a quasar is virtually unpolarized (the model of a nonpoint star). The spectra of linear polarization and its position angle are given for conical-envelope opening half-angles of 7.5°, 15°, and 30°. The inclination of the cone axis with respect to the observer’s direction took on values of 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 135°, and 150°. We allowed for the fact that part of the envelope is screened from the observer by the star itself. We also give polarization spectra for the radiation scattered in two mutually opposite conical envelopes. We use the results of our theoretical calculations to analyze the polarimetric observations of relativistic jets in cosmic gamma-ray bursts and active galactic nuclei. As a result, we estimated the magnetic fields in these objects. The constraint on the density of relativistic electrons is <107 cm?3.  相似文献

A statistical study of the cusp plasma has been performed using mainly electron data from the LPS, Rome, plasma experiment flown onboard HEOS-2. We have located the cusp by means of 35–50 eV electrons, from 1.5 to 2.5RE (south pole) and from 3RE up to 11RE (north pole) at 60–70° SM latitude within ±60° of SM longitude from the noon meridan plane. The average cusp thickness is 4.2° of invariant latitude. The location of the cusp in invariant latitude around the noon meridian plane depends on the IMF component BzGSM according to the linear best fit: Λ = 78.7° + 0.48BzGSM(γ). Away from the noon meridian plane the invariant latitude of the cusp decreases from 79–84° to 70–74° (at ±50° SM Longitude). At the equatorward edge of the north pole cusp, at all radial distances and at all SM longitudes, we have found a population of electrons with a harder energy spectrum than in the cusp itself. These electrons show a peak at 170–280 eV in our data. They are not the cusp (35–50 eV) electrons and are easily distinguishable from the 1 keV magnetospheric electrons. In the south pole auroral oval they are found at any SM longitude mainly poleward of the 1 keV electrons. The cusp electrons (35–50 eV) and protons have anisotropies that vary with radial distance and SM latitude, both flowing earthward more or less along the magnetic field.

We investigate wave amplification through the electron–cyclotron maser mechanism. We calculate absorption and emission coefficients without any approximations, also taking into account absorption by the ambient thermal plasma. A power-law energy distribution for the fast electrons is used, as indicated by X-ray and microwave observations.
We develop a model for the saturation length and amplification ratio of the maser, scan a large parameter space and calculate the absorption and emission coefficients for every frequency and angle.
Previous studies concluded that the unobservable Z mode dominates in the ν p≈ ν B region, and that millisecond spikes are produced in the region ν p ν B<0.25. We find that the observable O and X modes can produce emission in the 0.8< ν p ν B<2 region, which is expected at the footpoints of a flaring magnetic loop. The important criterion for observability is the saturation length and not the growth rate, as was assumed previously, and, even when the Z mode is the most strongly amplified, less strongly amplified O or X modes are still intense enough to be observed.
The brightness temperature computed with our model for the saturation length is found to be of order 1016 K and higher. The emission is usually at a frequency of 2.06 ν B, and at angles of 30°–60° to the magnetic field. The rise time of the amplified emission to maximum is a few tenths of a millisecond to a few milliseconds, and the emission persists for as long as new fast electrons arrive in the maser region.  相似文献

Role of many-body interactions on the energy loss of electrons accelerated at neutral point during solar flares has been studied. Energy loss with and without many-body interactions has been computed for different electron-density models as function of height. The energy loss increases by a factor of two by inclusion of many-body interactions for incident electron energies greater than 10 keV. Role of this on the generation of hard X-rays is discussed.  相似文献

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are important sources of Solar Proton Events (SPEs). Their speeds and source region locations have significant effects on the occurrence of SPEs. In this paper, all the halo CMEs observed in recent five years are statistically analyzed. The results show that the fast halo CMEs with small angular distances are more likely to produce SPEs, especially, those halo CMEs with a speed greater than 1200 km s?1 and an angular distance less than 60°. Three fast halo CMEs with no SPEs caused are elaborately studied. The results show that the ejection direction of the CME's main body and the variation of interplanetary magnetic field also have important impacts on the occurrence of SPEs. Consequently, in the practical daily space environment forecasts, an accurate forecast for SPEs must take various factors into account, such as the eruption speed, source region location, the main-body ejection direction of CMEs, and the interplanetary environment, etc.  相似文献

Results from kinematic solar dynamo models employing α ‐effect and turbulent pumping from local convection calculations are presented. We estimate the magnitude of these effects to be around 2–3 m s–1, having scaled the local quantities with the convective velocity at the bottom of the convection zone from a solar mixing‐length model. Rotation profile of the Sun as obtained from helioseismology is applied in the models; we also investigate the effects of the observed surface shear layer on the dynamo solutions. With these choices of the small‐ and large‐scale velocity fields, we obtain estimate of the ratio of the two induction effects, C α /C Ω ≈ 10–3, which we keep fixed in all models. We also include a one‐cell meridional circulation pattern having a magnitude of 10–20 m s–1 near the surface and 1–2 m s–1 at the bottom of the convection zone. The model essentially represents a distributed turbulent dynamo, as the α ‐effect is nonzero throughout the convection zone, although it concentrates near the bottom of the convection zone obtaining a maximum around 30° of latitude. Turbulent pumping of the mean fields is predominantly down‐ and equatorward. The anisotropies in the turbulent diffusivity are neglected apart from the fact that the diffusivity is significantly reduced in the overshoot region. We find that, when all these effects are included in the model, it is possible to correctly reproduce many features of the solar activity cycle, namely the correct equatorward migration at low latitudes and the polar branch at high latitudes, and the observed negative sign of B r B ϕ . Although the activity clearly shifts towards the equator in comparison to previous models due to the combined action of the α ‐effect peaking at midlatitudes, meridional circulation and latitudinal pumping, most of the activity still occurs at too high latitudes (between 5° … 60°). Other problems include the relatively narrow parameter space within which the preferred solution is dipolar (A0), and the somewhat too short cycle lengths of the solar‐type solutions. The role of the surface shear layer is found to be important only in the case where the α ‐effect has an appreciable magnitude near the surface. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The temporal and spatial distribution of the magnetic field and density of non-thermal electrons in the source of solar microwave bursts are studied by the gyrosynchrotron model, using the observations of the high-resolution spectrometer at the Owens Valley solar interferometer. The general results are consistent with the previous knowledge about these parameters. For example, the magnetic field decreases with increasing radio flux, and the distribution gradually flattens, so that the non-uniformity of the magnetic field decreases gradually, meanwhile the density increases, and the nonthermal electrons propagate from lower to higher levels. It is interesting that the oscillation of the density is detected at lower frequencies, and there is a correlation between the density and the energy index. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a diagnostic method for the basic plasma parameters in solar flares.  相似文献

Observations made at the quiet Sun-centre with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instruments on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory ( SOHO ) have shown that the intensities of the resonance lines of He  i and He  ii are significantly larger than predicted by emission measure distributions found from other transition region lines. The intensities of the helium lines are observed to be lower in coronal holes than in the quiet Sun. Any theory proposed to account for the behaviour of the helium lines must explain the observations of both the quiet Sun and coronal holes. We use observations made with SOHO to find the physical conditions in a polar coronal hole. The electron pressure is found using the C  iii 1175-Å and N  iii 991.5-Å lines, as the C  iii line at 977.0 Å becomes optically thick in some regions at high latitudes. The mean electron pressure is a factor of ≃2 lower than that at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean coronal electron temperature is     . The helium lines are enhanced with respect to other transition region lines but by factors which are ≃ 30 per cent smaller than at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean ratios of the intensities of the He  i 537.0- and 584.3-Å lines and of the He  i and He  ii 303.8-Å lines vary little with the type of region studied. These ratios are compared with those predicted by models of the transition region, taking into account the radiative transfer in the helium lines. No significant variation is found in the relative abundances of carbon and silicon.  相似文献

Latitudinal distributions of narrow-band 5 kHz hisses have been statistically obtained by using VLF electric field data received from the ISIS-1 and -2 at Syowa station, Antartica and Kashima station, Japan, in order to study an origin of the narrow-band 5 kHz hisses which are often observed on the ground in mid- and low-latitudes. The result shows that the narrow-band 5 kHz hiss occurs most frequently at geomagnetically invariant latitudes from 55° to 63°, that are roughly the plasmapause latitudes at various geomagnetic activities, both in the northern and southern hemispheres. The narrow-band 5 kHz hiss seems to be generated by the cyclotron instabilities of several keV to a few ten keV electrons for the most feasible electron density of 10 cm?3?103 cm?3 in the vicinity of the equatorial plasmapause since the hotter electrons with energy of 10–100 keV are dominant just outside the plasmapause. This will be the origin of the narrow-band 5 kHz hiss observed frequently in mid- and low-latitudes.  相似文献

Energy spectra and pitch angle distributions of auroral electrons in the energy range 2.5–11 keV observed on a rocket flight launched from Andøya on 13 November 1970 are presented. Strong rapidly fluctuating fluxes during the first part of the flight were succeeded by fluxes below or close to the level of detectability. Before the rocket passed through the northern precipitation boundary two spectral events of “inverted V” character occurred. Both events were associated with field aligned pitch angle distributions. While anisotropies with the flux peaked near 0° were in general associated with the spectral peak energy, isotropy over the upper hemisphere was the dominant distribution for other energies. The observations made during these events provide strong support for the theory of a parallel potential drop close to the ionosphere as an important accelerating mechanism for auroral electrons in connection with “inverted V” events.  相似文献
