Summary In the solar neighborhood, approximately half of all intermediate mass main sequence stars with initially between 1 and about 5 Mbecome carbon stars with luminosities near 104 L for typically less than 106 years. These high luminosity carbon stars lose mass at rates nearly always in excess of 10–7 M yr–1 and sometimes in excess of 10–5 M yr–1. Locally, close to half of the mass returned into the interstellar medium by intermediate mass stars before they become white dwarfs is during the carbon star phase. A much greater fraction of lower metallicity stars become carbon-rich before they evolve into planetary nebulae than do higher metallicity stars; therefore, carbon stars are much more importan t in the outer than in the inner Galaxy.  相似文献

The characteristics of gravitational bursts from active galactic nuclei, and globular clusters are obtained for three astrophysical situations:(i) scattering of stars by massive black holes residued at the centers of galaxies and globular clusters; (ii) the close encounters of stars in the nuclear regions of these objects; (iii) scattering of stars by black holes of stellar mass containing in the stellar population of galactic nuclei and clusters. The most effective source of gravitational bursts appears to be a scattering of stars by the massive central black holes which produces the bursts with dimensionless amplitudeh10–19–10–21 and frequencies from 10–1 to 10–5 Hz. The characteristics obtained correspond to the possiblities of a future gravitational-wave experiment with use of laser Doppler tracking of interplanetary spacecrafts.  相似文献

It is shown that during contact eclipsing binaries evolution under the influence of stellar wind, magnetic stellar wind and with matter transfer by gas flow, in binary stellar systems there may take place a process of star merger (low mass stars) within 105–107 yr and a fast increase of distance between stars of massive binaries. W UMa-type stars are a finite evolutionary stage of very close and low mass binary pairs. As for contact systems of early spectral types (CE-systems), they are more varied in evolution.  相似文献

Axisymmetrical models for protoplanetary nebulae are produced. We discuss the mechanism for mass loss from evolved cool stars and the characteristics of the gas outflow. By using two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics, we find that the gas is preferentially ejected in a so-called equatorial plane. For a grid of models, the expansion velocities are found to be of the order ofv escape/2 and the mass loss rates tilde 10–5-10–4 M /year which appear consistent with the available observational data. Magnetic fields intensities in the 10–4 to 10–3 gauss range are obtained in circumstellar envelopes, in good agreement with observations (Nedoluha and Bowers, 1992).  相似文献

We have investigated the effect of ionizing radiation from the UV stars (hot prewhite dwarfs) on the intergalactic medium (IGM). If the UV stars are powered only by gravitational contraction they radiate most of their energy at a typical surface temperature of 1.5×105 K which produces a very highly ionized IGM in which the elements carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are left with only one or two electrons. This results in these elements being very inefficient coolants. The gas is cooled principally by free-free emission and the collisional ionization of hydrogen and helium. For a typical UV star temperature ofT=1.5×105 K, the temperature of the ionized gas in the IGM isT g =1.2×105 K for a Hubble constantH o=75 km s–1 Mpc–1 and a hydrogen densityn H =10–6 cm–3. Heating by cosmic rays and X-rays is insignificant in the IGM except perhaps inHi clouds because when a hydrogen atom recombines in the IGM it is far more likely to be re-ionized by a UV-star photon than by of the other two types of particles due to the greater space density of UV-star photons and their appreciably larger ionization cross-sections. If the UV stars radiate a substantial fraction of their energy in a helium-burning stage in which they have surface temperatures of about 5×104 K, the temperature of the IGM could be lowered to about 5×104 K.  相似文献

We review various aspects of the evolutionary history of massive X-ray binaries. It is expected that moderately massive close binaries evolve to Be X-ray binaries, while very massive systems evolve to standard X-ray binaries. The compact objects are formed through supernova explosions. The fairly low galactic latitudes of those systems indicate that the explosion should, in general, not have accelerated the system to a velocity larger than 50kms–1. This implies that the mass of the exploding stars is in general less than 5 to 6M .After the explosion, tidal forces will circularize the orbit of short period systems. Even if the tidal evolution has been completed, the expansion of the optical star during the course of its evolution will continously disturb the stability of the orbit. Short period systems with large mass ratio may eventually become tidally unstable. Cen X-3 may be an example of such a system. The predicted rate of the orbital period decrease of Cen X-3 is in agreement with the observed rate.A way to represent the rotational and magnetic evolution of neutron stars in close binary systems is presented. The observed distribution of the pulsation periods of X-ray pulsars with Be companions is consistent with initial magnetic fields of 1012–1013 G of the neutron stars. We suggest that the fast X-ray pulsars 4U 0115+63 and A 0538-66 are young neutron stars, while Cen X-3 and SMC X-1 are recycled pulsars. The evolutionary relationship between massive X-ray binaries, binary pulsars, and millisecond pulsars is also discussed.Invited paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

The solar-wind interacts directly with the lunar surface due to tenuous atmosphere and magnetic field. The interaction results in an almost complete absorption of the solar-wind corpuscles producing no upstream bowshock but a cavity downstream. The solar-wind oxygen ionic species induce and undergo a complex set of reactions with the elements of the lunar minerals and the solar-wind derived trapped gases. The oxygen concentration indegeneous to the lunar surface material is about 60 at.%. Some of these oxygen are displaced from their crystal lattice locations by interactions of the solar-wind corpuscles. A small fraction of these displaced oxygen is in active state. The solar-wind oxygen species flux is about 6×104 cm–2 s–1. Besides inducing and undergoing various reactions these species become trapped as oxygen atoms in the lunar grains. Only a portion of these trapped oxygen atoms is in active state. For the contribution of oxygen atoms and molecules from the lunar surface grains to the atmosphere and their reactions with other species, the diffusion coefficients of oxygen atom and molecule should be known. However their values in the highly radiation-damaged lunar surface material are not known. The coefficients are calculated by using the apparent lifetimes of atomic and molecular oxygen in the lunar material. The atmospheric concentration of oxygen atoms and molecules near the lunar surface are found to be about 20 and 3 cm–3, respectively. These values appear to be very reasonable in comparison with the experimental data. The Apollo 17 lunar orbital UV spectrometer data indicate the atomic oxygen concentration is <8×101 cm–3. The Apollo 17 lunar surface mass spectrometer (sensitivity: 1 count=2×102 molecules cm–3) did not detect any oxygen molecules on the dayside of the Moon, but the sunrise concentration was reported to be 1±×103 cm–3. At the time of the sample collection on the Moon the oxygen content in the trapped gas layer was partly as oxygen atoms and partly as oxygen molecules. At the time of sample analysis on the Earth the concentrations of these two species did not change appreciably.  相似文献

We have derived the real and imaginary indices of refraction for 10 phyllosilicate minerals—montmorillonite, beidellite, nontronite, hectorite, saponite, illite, illite–smectite (60/40 interlayered) kaolinite, halloysite, and serpentine—from 100–2000 cm−1 (5–100 μm) at 2 cm−1 spectral sampling using classical Lorentz–Lorenz dispersion theory. We present the real and imaginary indices and the oscillator parameters with which they were modeled. Use of these optical constants will aid in the modeling of thermal infrared spectra of planets, asteroids, interplanetary and interstellar dust, and protoplanetary disks around nearby stars.  相似文献

The properties of explosive events in the solar transition zone are presented by means of detailed examples and statistical analyses. These events are observed as regions of exceptionally high velocity ( 100 km s–1) in profiles of Civ, formed at 105 K, observed with the High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS). The following average properties have been determined from observations obtained during the third rocket flight of the HRTS: full width at half maximum extent along the slit - 1.6 × 103 km; maximum velocity - 110 km s–1; peak emission measure - 4 × 1041 cm–3; lifetime - 60 s; birthrate - 4 × 10–21 cm–2 s–1 in a coronal hole and 1 × 10–20 cm–2 s–1 in the quiet Sun; mass - 6 × 108 g; and, kinetic energy - 6 × 1022 erg. The 6 examples show that there are considerable variations from these average parameters in individual events. Although small, the events show considerable spatial structure and are not point-like objects. A spatial separation is often detected between the positions of the red and blue shifted components and consequently the profile cannot be explained by turbulence alone. Mass motions in the events appear to be isotropic because the maximum observed velocity does not show any correlation with heliographic latitude. Apparent motions of the 100 km s–1 plasmas during their 60 s lifetime should be detected but none are seen. The spatial frequency of occurrence shows a maximum near latitudes of 40–50°, but otherwise their sites seem to be randomly distributed. There is enough mass in the explosive events that they could make a substantial contribution to the solar wind. It is hard to explain the heating of typical quiet structures by the release of energy in explosive events.  相似文献

Photospheric models were calculated for 90 stars with effective temperatures between 2500 K and 41600 K for five logg-values ranging from 1 to 5. Molecule formation was taken into account. In order to have an idea about possible instabilities in the different stellar layers some quantities, characteristic for convection and turbulence were calculated, such as the Rayleigh-, Reynolds-, Prandtl- and Péclet-numbers. It turned out that all the investigated stars contain unstable layers, including the hottest. Nevertheless, only stars with effective temperatures of 8300 K or less contain layers where the convective energy transport is important. For all stars the convective velocities were calculated and also the generated mechanical fluxes in the convection zones were tabulated.Under the hypothesis that this mechanical energy flux is responsible for the heating of the corona, coronal models were constructed for the Sun and for some stars with effective temperatures between 5000 K and 8320 K for logg-values of 4 or 5.For Main Sequence stars the largest fluxes are generated in F-stars; stars withT eff=7130 K and logg=4 possess also the hottest and most dense coronas with a computed temperature of 3.7·106 K and logN e =10.5.The solar corona computed in this way, on the basis of a photospheric mechanical flux of 0.14·108 erg cm–2 sec–1, has a temperature of 1.3·106 K and logN e =9.8. This density is apparently too high, but even when including in the computations all theoretical refinements proposed in the last few years by various authors it does not appear possible to obtain a solar coronal model with a smaller density. However, when taking into account the inhomogeneous structure of the chromosphere and by associating the calculated mechanical fluxes to the coarse mottles, and lower fluxes to the undisturbed regions we find a mean coronal temperature of 1.1·106 K and a mean logN e -values of 9. The computed velocity of the solar wind at a distance of 104 km above the photosphere has a value between 7 and 11 km sec–1. These latter values are in fair agreement with the observations.  相似文献

Line-forming regions around close binaries with strong winds ( /4r * v 10–4 g cm–2) are large in extent compared with the stars, large enough to screen them. Their orbitally-modulated Doppler shifts can overestimate the mass function, because of a larger rotational lever arm. In particular, most of the black-hole candidates need not involve companions more massive than a neutron star. The solar-wind problem is reconsidered. An extrapolation to Wolf-Rayet stars suggests that their winds are centrifugally driven. Their mass-loss rates tend to have been overestimated.Seemingly single (massive) stars can hide a (compact) companion.  相似文献

It is shown that a universal steady X-ray background with the energy flux 10–7 erg cm–2 s–1 sr–1 can arise as a superposition of radiation from pulsars (neutron stars) in various galaxies when it is taken into account that supernova outburst occurs in a galaxy at the rate of 10–2/year.  相似文献

The light curves, obtained by the authors of the present paper during the period 1978–1992, of the chromospherically active binary system RT Lac were examined. The average (B–V) colour indices were obtained and corrected for the interstellar extinction. Spectroscopic studies indicate that the less massive component may be taken as G8. The light curve analysis indicates that the less massive, larger component fills its corresponding Roche lobe. Both photometric and spectroscopic observations compel one to draw a conclusion that circumstellar matter does exist around the binary system. A colour excess caused by this matter is found to be 0.278 for B–V colour at mid–secondary eclipse. On the basis of photometric colour indices alone, the components of RT Lac are classified as G3–4 and G8. If we use the observed radial velocities of the less massive subgiant star from Ca II emission lines and from other optical lines we find for the mass of the more massive component as 1.34–1.70 M. This mass range corresponds to the main sequence late F stars. The common envelope hypothesis and mass function and also blending of the spectral lines of more massive component point out that it should be at most a late F type main sequence star.  相似文献

Rocket observations have shown that the far-ultraviolet resonance lines have P-Cygni profiles in the spectra of many hot stars, including of and Wolf-Rayet stars and OB supergiants. Velocity shifts as high as–300- km sec–1 have been measured for the short-wavelength edges of some of the lines. The difference of spatial distributions between the O-type stars, supernovae and red giant stars found by Riekeet al. (1980) in the nuclear region of M82 can be interpreted if the star formation has been triggered by shock waves expanding from the nucleus with velocities of 100 km s–1 at 300 pc from the centre and if the explosions have recurrently occurred with time interval of about 2×106 yr. The recurrent formation of such giant compressed gas layer makes the formation rate of massive stars efficient.  相似文献

Wolf-Rayet stars
This paper reviews the current status of knowledge regarding the basic physical and chemical properties of Wolf-Rayet stars; their overall mass loss and stellar wind characteristics and current ideas about their evolutionary status. WR stars are believed to be the evolved descendents of massive O-type stars, in which extensive mass loss reveals successive stages of nuclear processed material: WN stars the products of interior CNO-cycle hydrogen burning, and WC and WO stars the products of interior helium burning. Recent stellar evolution models, particularly those incorporating internal mixing, predict results which are in good accord with the different chemical compositions observationally inferred for WN, WC and WO stars. WR stars exhibit the highest levels of mass loss amongst earlytype stars: mass loss rates, typically, lie in the range [1–10]×10−5 M yr−1. Radiation pressure-driven winds incorporating multi-scattering in high ionisation-stratified winds may cause these levels, but additional mechanisms may also be needed.  相似文献

Strong absorption satellite lines of CaI 6572 were found on spectrograms taken on three successive days just after the fourth contact of the 1971–72 eclipse of Zeta Aurigae. The radial velocities of the satellite lines are –88 km s–1, –74 km s–1, and –180 km–1, respectively, relative to the K-type primary star (K4 Ib). These absorptions should be due to a circumstellar cloud in which the column density of neutral calcium atoms is 1×1017 cm–2 and the turbulent velocities come to 20–50 km s–1. It is suggested that the cloud may be formed by the rocket-effect of the Lyman quanta of the B-type component (B6 V). We estimate the density in the cloud to be 2×1011 atoms cm–3 fors=10R K and 2×1010 atoms cm–3 fors=102 R K, wheres denotes the distance of the cloud from the K star andR K the K star's radius. The mass loss rate of the K-type component is also estimated to be about 10–7 M yr–1, assuming that the expansion of the K star occurs isotropically.  相似文献

Structures of Newtonian super-massive stars are calculated with the opacity for Comptor effectK 0/(1 + T), whereK 0=0.21(1 +X and =2.2×10–9K–1. The track of the Main-Sequence is turned right in the upper part of the HR diagram. Mass loss will occur in a Main-Sequence stage for a star with mass larger than a critical mass. The cause of mass loss and the expansion of the radius is continuum radiation pressure. The critical mass for mass loss is 1.02×106 M for a Population I star, and 1.23×105 M for Population III star. Mass loss rates expected in these stars are 3.3×10–3 and 4.0×10–3 M yr–1, respectively.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

Winds are directly detected from solar-type stars only when they are very young. At ages 106 yr, these stars have mass loss rates 106 times the mass flux of the present solar wind. Although these young T Tauri stars exhibit ultraviolet transition-region and X-ray coronal emission, the large particle densities of the massive winds lead to efficient radiative cooling, and wind temperatures are only 104 K. In these circumstances thermal acceleration is unlikely to play an important role in driving the mass loss. Turbulent energy fluxes may be responsible for the observed mass loss, particularly if substantial magnetic fields are present. The presence of stellar mass loss is indirectly shown by the spindown of low-mass stars as they age. It appears that many solar-mass stars spin up as they contract toward the Main-Sequence, reaching a maximum equatorial velocity of 50 to 100 km s–1. These stars spin down rapidly upon reaching the Main Sequence. Spindown may be enhanced by a decoupling or lag between convective envelope and radiative core. Because this spindown occurs fairly early in a solar-type star's history, the internal structure of old stars like the Sun may not depend upon initial conditions.  相似文献

Wolf-Rayet stars are defined, a summary is given of the properties of Wolf-Rayet stars, and a qualitative model of a Wolf-Rayet star is sketched. It is incontrovertible that Wolf-Rayet stars are losing mass, a typical rate of mass loss being near 10–5 M per year. The outward directed velocity of the expanding shell has been estimated for 10 stars. The largest value found is 2500 km/sec; most values lie between 1000 and 1500 km/sec. Two outstanding problems are to understand how the observed high velocities are generated and to demonstrate quantitatively the effect of these velocities on the observed spectrum. Five questions raised by the fact that mass loss is observed to take place from Wolf-rayet stars are discussed briefly in Section 5.Presented at the Trieste Colloquium on Mass Loss from Stars, September 12–16, 1968.  相似文献
