Formation waters in the Palo Duro Basin, Texas, U.S.A. fall into four major groups based on integrated chemical and isotopic characteristics: (1) interbed brines within the major Permian evaporite aquitard; these are the most chemically concentrated and18O-rich fluids in the basin, and are interpreted as evaporatively concentrated sea water which has been hydrologically isolated since the Permian; (2) brines below the salt on the eastern side of the basin have ClBr, divalent cation, and isotopic systematics indicating a mixture of evaporatively concentrated sea water and meteoric water of δD= −20‰; (3) brines below the salt on the western side of the basin have chemical and isotopic systematics suggesting a mixture of two pulses of meteoric water, one with δD= −20‰ and the other with δD= −55‰; and (4) waters above the salt have the isotopic composition of meteoric waters. Diagenetic alteration of the cation chemistry has occurred for brines within and below the salt. Aquifers below the salt on the eastern side are interpreted as having been charged with dense Permian evaporite brines which subsequently mixed in various amounts with a basin-wide pulse of Triassic meteoric water. On the western side the descending Triassic meteoric waters became saline by dissolution of halite and are currently mixing with a Tertiary pulse of meteoric water initiated by the Laramide uplift to the west. The hydrochemistry suggests flow on the western side of the basin and static conditions on the eastern side. An unrecognized, approximately N-S permeability restriction, or discontinuity in the potentiometric flow surface, is inferred for major aquifers in the central area of the basin.  相似文献

The sedimentary record from Lake George provides the longest relatively continuous Quaternary continental sequence yet available from Australia, and may record one of the longest Upper Cainozoic lacustrine records in the world.

Palaeomagnetic analysis of a 36 m core from the lake floor identifies a sequence of deposition extending through the Brunhes and Matuyama, to the Gauss magnetic Chron. A longer core from the same site, but with incomplete recovery, extends to 72 m in lacustrine sediment; the age of the base of this core estimated by extrapolation is between 4.2 and 7 Ma. As there are still older and deeper sediments in the basin, extending to an estimated depth of 134 m, the age of the tectonic formation of the Lake George basin must be reckoned as Middle Miocene or older.

The pattern of facies organisation through time demonstrates a phase of deep water deposition extending from the base of the cored sequence (72 m) up to 51.5 m, at which time a major change took place. A disconformity developed at this level, associated with a period of deep weathering and a prolonged phase of slope mantle deposition (from 51.5 to 30.8 m). A gradual return to lacustrine environments, with diminishing proportion of slope wash detritus, resulted in increased rates of deposition coincident with the Jaramillo Subchron at 21.5 m. Thereafter, throughout the Brunhes magnetic Chron, lacustrine conditions dominated, varying from deep to lake dry conditions in a rhythmic fashion, and reflecting the major climatic oscillations of the past 700 000 years, becoming more regular in the past 400 000 years.

The pollen analytical record of the upper 8.6 m, covering the last 350 000 years, provides the main framework for the reconstruction of climatic history. The pollen and algal records indicate a sequence of vegetation and lake level changes, in which four major glacial/interglacial cycles are correlated with stages 1 to 10 of the 180 marine record. This provides by far the longest continuous biostratigraphic framework for the Quaternary period in Australia.

Comparison between the palaeoclimatic record and the lake level evidence shows that there is no simple correlation between the lake level fluctuations and the glacial/ interglacial oscillations. In fact, major falls in the lake level occured both at the peak of cold glacials and during the warm interglacials. Though the falls in the lake levels during a warm period (interglacial) can be explained by high rates of evaporation, drying during maximum cold can be explained best in terms of a fall in precipitation. Permanent to deep‐lake conditions generally occurred during intermediate cool periods following warm intervals, when perhaps the seas were still warm and low rates of evaporation on land prevailed. On the other hand, short periods of shallow to deep lake levels also occurred during warm (interglacial) periods, showing that these were associated with reasonably high rates of precipitation.  相似文献

Bands of sphalerite, pyrrhotite, galena, and chalcopyrite are found within and conformable with two distinctive stratigraphic horizons of the metasedimentary Breonie Metalliferous series of northern Italy. Banding is attributable to deposition and metamorphism. Gangue minerals and ore minerals are intergrown and of comparable grain size. Sulfide textures, an older and a younger generation, are metamorphic in origin. Older textures include porphyroblasts, coarse grain, annealing twins, and concentrations of selected minerals along grain boundaries and in fold hinges. Younger generation textures include minute fractures, breccia, mylonite, mineral preferred orientation, deformation twins, linear arrays of small grains, grain size reduction of an order of magnitude, and pressure shadows. The younger deformation textures were slightly modified by syntectonic and posttectonic recrystallization, annealing, and grain growth. Metamorphic textures combined to erase original depositional features except for the layering and conformability inherited from an early sedimentary sulfide setting.Work carried out within the "Progetto Finalizzato Geodinamica", subproject 4, Operative Unit 4. 2. 3., C. The Fetterman Mammoth locality, eastern Wyoming, U.S.A., produced the remains of a single subadult mammoth and a small lithic assemblage. This paper employs a fine‐grained taphonomic approach to investigate the events responsible for the deposit's creation. No cultural modifications were noted on any of the specimens. Long axis orientations plotted against a reconstruction of the depositional surface suggest limited postdepositional movement of individual disarticulated elements. Weathering patterns based on in situ upside and downside positioning document two discrete episodes of sedimentation. These results suggest that the mammoth remains and the cultural assemblage may be separated by at least one depositional event and, as such, their association is considered equivocal. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Analysis of shapes of folds, together with other structures such as axial plane foliation boudinage, mullions and cross joints, show that the F1 folds in the ‘main Raialo syncline’ were formed by buckling, and were subsequently modified by flattening normal to the axial planes and lengthening along the axis. The apparent buckle shortening of the F1 folds generally ranges between 70 and 80%. The folds were formed by simple shear (giving place to pure shear at certain stages) in an almost north-south direction on subhorizontal beds. Progressive deformation in the later stage of F1 folding resulted in gentle upright folding of F1 axial planes on F1′ axes slightly oblique to F1. The F2 folds, whose average shortening ranges from 20 to 30%, were also formed by buckling caused by horizontal compression in a nearly northwest-southeast direction. This folding was preceded and followed in some instances by homogeneous strain, as deduced fro mthe shapes of the F2 folds and the nature of variation of the F1 lineations. The F3 conjugate structures developed when the maximum compressive strain was vertical and the intermediate compressive strain northwest-southeast, almost normal to the subvertical F2 axial planes. The increase in the amplitude of the F2 folds in the last phase of F2 folding in certain zones resulted in an excess of vertical load, which dissipated with the formation of the F3 structures. In the last stage of movement (F4) the maximum compressive strain became horizontal along the strike of F2 axial planes, whereas the minimum compressive strain was normal to them. The F4 structures, therefore, point to a longitudinal shortening with reference to large scale F2 folding.  相似文献

Evidence of a dynamic Holocene glacial history is preserved in the terrestrial and marine archives of St. Jonsfjorden, a small fjord‐system on the west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. High‐resolution, remotely sensed imagery from marine and terrestrial environments was used to construct geomorphological maps that highlight an intricate glacial history of the entire fjord‐system. The geomorphology and stratigraphy indicate an early Holocene local glacier advance constrained to the Lateglacial–early Holocene transition. Identification and 14C dating of the thermophilous bivalve mollusc Modiolus modiolus to 10.0±0.12 cal. ka BP suggest a rapid northward migration of the species shortly after deglaciation. Further evidence enhances the understanding of the onset and subsequent climax of the Neoglacial‐Little Ice Age in inner St. Jonsfjorden. The present‐day terminus of Osbornebreen, the dominating glacier system in St. Jonsfjorden, is located over 8.5 km up‐fjord from its Neoglacial maximum extent. Cross‐cutting relationships suggest subsequent advances of all the smaller glaciers in the area following the break‐up of Osbornebreen. Glacial deposits, landforms and their cross‐cutting relationships observed in both terrestrial and marine settings imply a complex and highly dynamic environment through the later part of the Holocene.  相似文献
