The location and the stability in the linear sense of the libration points in the restricted problem have been studied when there are perturbations in the potentials between the bodies. It is seen that if the perturbing functions satisfy certain conditions, there are five libration points, two triangular and three collinear. It is further observed that the collinear points are unstable and for the triangular points, the range of stability increases or decreases depending upon whetherP> or <0 wherep depends upon the perturbing functions. The theory is verified in the following four cases:
  1. There are no perturbations in the potentials (classical problem).
  2. Only the bigger primary is an oblate spheroid whose axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the plane of relative motion (circular) of the primaries.
  3. Both the primaries are oblate spheroids whose axes of symmetry are perpendicular to the plane of relative motion (circular) of the primaries.
  4. The primaries are spherical in shape and the bigger is a source of radiation.

The absolute temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) has been measured at a frequency of 1280 MHz. The observation was made with a modified version of the L-band receiver used in the Giant Metre wavelength Radio Telescope (GMRT): the feed horn was replaced by a corrugated plate and the receiver was placed on the ground, directed at zenith, and shielded from ground radiation by an aluminium screen with corrugated edges. Novel techniques have been adopted for
  • ?reducing and cancelling unwanted contributions to the system temperature of the receiver and
  • ?calibrating the contributions from the feed assembly and receiver.
  • The thermodynamic temperature of the CMB is estimated to be 3.45 ± 0.78 K.  相似文献

    The observational data permit us to establish clear statistical correlations between different parameters of stellar flare activity and the characteristics of quiet stars. These relations are:
    1. between energies and frequencies of flares on stars of different luminosities;
    2. between total radiation energies of flares and quiet stars both in X-ray and Balmer emission lines;
    3. between flare decay rates just after the maxima and flare luminosities at maxima.

    Two-dimensional maps of radio brightness temperature and polarization, computed assuming thermal emission with free-free and gyroresonance absorption, are compared with observations of active region 2502, performed at Westerbork at λ = 6.16 cm during a period of 3 days in June 1980. The computation is done assuming a homogeneous model in the whole field of view (5′ × 5′) and a force-free extrapolation of the photospheric magnetic field observed at MSFC with a resolution of 2″.34. The mean results are the following:
    1. A very good agreement is found above the large leading sunspot of the group, assuming a potential extrapolation of the magnetic field and a constant conductive flux in the transition region ranging from 2 × 106 to 107 erg cm?2s?1.
    2. A strong radio source, associated with a new-born moving sunspot, cannot be ascribed to thermal emission. It is suggested that this source may be due to synchrotron radiation by mildly relativistic electrons accelerated by resistive instabilities occurring in the evolving magnetic configuration. An order-of-magnitude computation of the expected number of accelerated particles seems to confirm this hypothesis.

    Celebrating the diamond jubilee of the Physics Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, India, we look back over the last six decades in solar physics and contemplate on the ten outstanding problems (or research foci) in solar physics:
    1. The solar neutrino problem
    2. Structure of the solar interior (helioseismology)
    3. The solar magnetic field (dynamo, solar cycle, corona)
    4. Hydrodynamics of coronal loops
    5. MHD oscillations and waves (coronal seismology)
    6. The coronal heating problem
    7. Self-organized criticality (from nanoflares to giant flares)
    8. Magnetic reconnection processes
    9. Particle acceleration processes
    10. Coronal mass ejections and coronal dimming
    The first two problems have been largely solved recently, while the other eight selected problems are still pending a final solution, and thus remain persistent Challenges for Solar Cycle 24, the theme of this jubilee conference.  相似文献

    An analysis of the data concerning high-velocity stars from Eggen's catalogue aimed at a determination of the approximate slope of the mass function for the spherical component of our Galaxy, and at estimating the local circular velocity, as well as the local rotation velocity, as by-products, has been performed. Our conclusions are that:
    1. A linear dependence of the mass on the radius is very likely;
    2. the value of the limiting radius is most likely equal to (40±10) kpc;
    3. the two local velocities are approximately equal to each other, being both equal to (230±30) km s?1;
    4. the local escape velocity appears to be most likely equal to (520±30) km s?1;
    5. the total mass of a corona, obtained in this way, is (5±1)×1011 M .

    The paper discusses an investigation of linear polarization produced by the transmission of light through an astronomical spectrograph slit. An experimental apparatus was designed and set up to carry out this work. The parallel beam of plane polarized light was rotated in the measuring system, by optically active of half-wave plate. The intensity of normally incident of polarized light of wavelength 0.436 μm transmitted by various slit was measured as a function of slit width. The results indicate:
    1. That the degree of polarization increased as thedepth of the narrow slit was increased.
    2. That the degree of polarization increased as thewidth of the narrow slit was decreased.
    3. That when the width of slit was widened the degree of polarization tended to approach a constant value asymptotically.
    4. That the theoretical calculation of Slater (1942) predicts the measured experimental values more accurately than Thiessen (1947) and Jones and Richards (1954).
    It is shown that the existence and order of magnitude of all these effects may be predicted from the propagation losses of the electromagnetic theory of light in metallic wave guide. The paper brings out the salient points related to the degree of polarization of light by a dielectric slit of finite depth. The polarization effects from one such slit have been investigated and the results were compared with those for metallic slits.  相似文献

    Radio and X-ray observations are presented for three flares which show significant activity for several minutes prior to the main impulsive increase in the hard X-ray flux. The activity in this ‘pre-flash’ phase is investigated using 3.5 to 461 keV X-ray data from the Solar Maximum Mission, 100 to 1000 MHz radio data from Zürich, and 169 MHz radio-heliograph data from Nançay. The major results of this study are as follows:
    1. Decimetric pulsations, interpreted as plasma emission at densities of 109–1010 cm?3, and soft X-rays are observed before any Hα or hard X-ray increase.
    2. Some of the metric type III radio bursts appear close in time to hard X-ray peaks but delayed between 0.5 and 1.5 s, with the shorter delays for the bursts with the higher starting frequencies.
    3. The starting frequencies of these type III bursts appear to correlate with the electron temperatures derived from isothermal fits to the hard X-ray spectra. Such a correlation is expected if the particles are released at a constant altitude with an evolving electron distribution. In addition to this effect we find evidence for a downward motion of the acceleration site at the onset of the flash phase.
    4. In some cases the earlier type III bursts occurred at a different location, far from the main position during the flash phase.
    5. The flash phase is characterized by higher hard X-ray temperatures, more rapid increase in X-ray flux, and higher starting frequency of the coincident type III bursts.

    The radiation fluxes of the NGC 1275 galaxy central region are being observed on the 1.25-m telescope, using a scanning spectrophotometer with the entrance aperture 10″ in three Δλ=80 Å spectral regions: Hβ, 4959+5007 Å [OIII] and continuum. There were 35 nights of observations during 1982–1987. With the time resolution of half an hour 379 measurements were obtained in each spectral region. The analysis of these results shows:
    1. The standard deviations of measurements in each spectral region 2–3 times exceed the errors of observations.
    2. The radiation flux distribution resembles to normal one only for Hβ line.
    3. Two-humps forms of continuum flux distribution curve is like that of radio emission in 8 mm and 2.6 cm wavelengths.
    4. Various forms of fluxes distribution curves of Hβ and [OIII] lines permit us to suppose that the location of these lines emission regions near the sources of excitation are different.

    The recent observation of the absorption of radiation belts in the vicinity of Saturn's bright rings and historical observations of the ring system make the following related results apparent:
  • - The gaps in the rings are caused by the presence of at least 6 small, extremely dense and probably electrically charged ‘sweeper’ moons which effectively sweep the ring matter clean from the gaps. This is known due to the fading of the inner ring edges whereas the outer edges are well defined. Their orbital periods will differ from the expected Keplerian periods if the moons and Saturn do possess electric fields.
  • - Absorption of radiation belts near the rings (of Jupiter also) implies that the ring particles themselves are not absorbing the radiation but the small moons are. This is consistent with the observed radiation belt absorption near the outer Saturnian moons.
  • - If electric fields of the sweeper moons cause the ring edge fading as observed (and not simply gravitational), then Saturn itself must maintain an electric field in its vicinity by way of a sizeable proton wind to affect the uneven ring edge fading and will be surrounded by an H+ cloud at least to approximately the A-ring. this is consistent with the detection of an H+ cloud surrounding Saturn (Weiseret al., 1977, p. 755). The other possibility is that these moons are extremely dense and have very large internal magnetic fields.
  • - Because of their location, these moons must be captured and if very dense as believed, may be core remnants of a nova.

    The properties of rapidly changing inhomogeneities visible in the H and K lines above sunspot umbrae are described. We find as properties for these ‘Umbral Flashes’:
    1. A lifetime of 50 sec. The light curve is asymmetrical, the increase is faster than the decrease in brightness.
    2. A diameter ranging from the resolution limit up to 2000 km.
    3. A tendency to repeat every 145 sec.
    4. A ‘proper motion’ of 40 km/sec generally directed towards the penumbra.
    5. A Doppler shift of 6 km/sec.
    6. A magnetic field of 2100 G.
    7. A decrease in this field of 12 G/sec. This decrease is probably related to the flash motion.
    8. At any instant an average of 3–5 flashes in a medium-sized umbra. A weak feature often persists in the umbra after the flash. This post-flash structure initially shows a blue shift, but 100–120 sec after the flash, it shows a rapid red shift just before the flash repeats.

    The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) gave us the highest EUV spatial resolution and the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectrometric Imager (RHESSI) gave us the highest hard X-ray and gammaray spectral resolution to study solar flares. We review a number of recent highlights obtained from both missions that either enhance or challenge our physical understanding of solar flares, such as:

    A study of ephemeral active regions (ER) identified on good quality full-disk magnetograms reveals:
    1. On the average 373 and 179 ER were present on the Sun in 1970 and 1973 respectively. The number varies with the solar cycle.
    2. The median lifetime of ER depends on observation quality and selection rules but is estimated as about 12 hr for our data.
    3. The latitude distribution is very broad but not uniform. The distribution peaks near the equator and shows variations similar to distributions of large active regions.
    4. The longitude distribution is essentially homogeneous.
    5. The spatial orientation of ER is almost random. In 1973 there is a hint of an excess of new cycle orientations at high latitudes.
    A comparison of parameters of ER and regular active regions suggests that ER are the small-scale end of a broad spectrum of active regions. The role of ER in the light of present theories of solar activity is investigated but is not yet clear. Heating of the chromosphere and corona may be significantly affected by ER.  相似文献

    A new high-resolution radio spectropolarimeter instrument operating in the frequency range of 15?–?85 MHz has recently been commissioned at the Radio Astronomy Field Station of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Gauribidanur, 100 km north of Bangalore, India. We describe the design and construction of this instrument. We present observations of a solar radio noise storm associated with Active Region (AR) 12567 in the frequency range of \({\approx}\,15\,\mbox{--}\,85~\mbox{MHz}\) during 18 and 19 July 2016, observed using this instrument in the meridian-transit mode. This is the first report that we are aware of in which both the burst and continuum properties are derived simultaneously. Spectral indices and degree of polarization of both the continuum radiation and bursts are estimated. It is found that
    1. i)
      Type I storm bursts have a spectral index of \({\approx}\,{+}3.5\),

    2. ii)
      the spectral index of the background continuum is \({\approx}\,{+}2.9\),

    3. iii)
      the transition frequency between Type I and Type III storms occurs at \({\approx}\,55~\mbox{MHz}\),

    4. iv)
      Type III bursts have an average spectral index of \({\approx}\,{-}2.7\),

    5. v)
      the spectral index of the Type III continuum is \({\approx}\,{-}1.6\), and

    6. vi)
      the degree of circular polarization of all Type I (Type III) bursts is \({\approx}\,90\%\) (\(30\%\)).

    The results obtained here indicate that the continuum emission is due to bursts occurring in rapid succession. We find that the derived parameters for Type I bursts are consistent with suprathermal electron acceleration theory and those of Type III favor fundamental plasma emission.

    Shock remagnetization is a significant mode of alteration of the intensity and direction of magnetization in planetary crustal rocks subjected to the dynamic and thermochemical effects associated with meteorite impact. Shock remagnetization will take place almost instantaneously during and following the transient shock episode, and over longer times depending on residual temperature effects associated with shock heating and the production of impact melt. Remagnetization will follow certain demagnetization effects. The following transitions and residual effects will result in remagnetization of planetary crustal material:
    1. First order reversible crystallographic transitions in bodycentered cubic iron-nickel alloys.
    2. Second order Curie temperature transitions in face-centered cubic iron-nickel alloys.
    3. Shock induced uniaxial anisotropy due to magnetoelasstic coupling of magnetic vectors to the shock wave.
    4. Shock melting of iron containing silicates.
    5. Subsolidus reduction and FeO decomposition.
    6. Partial ther moremanence due to post-shock temperature.
    7. Total thermoremanence due to post-shock temperature.
    8. Production of a superparamagnetic distribution of iron which is sensitive to surface temperature fluctuation.
    9. Thermal effects in metal and alloy phases.
    Lunar breccia and soil samples are generally more reduced than crystalline rocks and some of th's reduction is subsolidus probably associated with the transient thermal effects due to meteorite impact in teh porous reglith.  相似文献

    The properties of small (< 2″) moving magnetic features near certain sunspots are studied with several time series of longitudinal magnetograms and Hα filtergrams. We find that the moving magnetic features:
    1. Are associated only with decaying sunspots surrounded entirely or in part by a zone without a permanent vertical magnetic field.
    2. Appear first at or slightly beyond the outer edge of the parent sunspot regardless of the presence or absence of a penumbra.
    3. Move approximately radially outward from sunspots at about 1 km s?1 until they vanish or reach the network.
    4. Appear with both magnetic polarities from sunspots of single polarities but appear with a net flux of the same sign as the parent sunspot.
    5. Transport net flux away from the parent sunspots at the same rates as the flux decay of the sunspots.
    6. Tend to appear in opposite polarity pairs.
    7. Appear to carry a total flux away from sunspots several times larger than the total flux of the sunspots.
    8. Produce only a very faint emmission in the core of Hα.
    A model to help understand the observations is proposed.  相似文献

    In this paper we relate two methods of analyzing the kinematic parameters of the local macroscopic motions of the Galaxy:
    1. The Ogorodnikov-Milne model (OM) that consists in the three-dimensional Taylor expansion of the mean velocity field.
    2. The two-dimensional spherical harmonic development of the velocity components (SH). We present the theoretical relations between the SH coefficients and the second-order OM ones for the radial velocityv r and the galactic heliocentric components of the velocityU, V, W. Only the hypothesis of separability of the stellar density function of the sample into angular and radial parts is needed. Also, we apply them to 4732 A-M stars included in the Figueras (1986) sample.

    In connection with the appearance of the first results of infrared observations of stellar flares, a more elaborate analysis ofnegative infrared flares as a phenomenon, predicted by the fastelectron hypothesis, has been carried out. As a result, the wavelength regions of negative flares are established for the stars of different spectral types as well as the calculated amplitudes of the negative flares (Tables I and II). The analysis of the infrared observations (c.f. Kilyachkoet al., 1978) lead to the following conclusions:
    1. The negative infrared flares discovered around 8000 Å is not in agreement with the theory in the case of the flare star UV Cet. Some traces of negative flares have been noted for a number of less powerful flares of EV Lac.
    2. The amplitudes of the recorded positive flares of UV Cet and EV Lac on λ8000 Å are in good agreement with the magnitudes predicted by the fast-electron hypothesis (non-thermal bremsstrahlung).
    3. In the future the negative flares around 8000 Å should be looked for in early-type flare stars of types M0-K5.
    4. For a positive discovery of negative flares, future observations must be carried out in the wavelength region of 1–3 μm.
