Wrinkle ridge systems within and around Martian highland craters were studied in order to find their basin-induced and regional aspects. Most prominent ridge directions indicate regional tectonic patterns. Radial ridges near large craters are often slightly deflected along regional or global ridge systems. Crater floor ridges have simpler local distributions. Smaller or older craters are less resistant against the effects of global or regional stress systems. In craters concentric ridge rings locate at 0.8 crater radius with additional minor rings at 0.66, 0.44 and 0.94 crater radius. This pattern illustrates compression of lava fill over buried topography. 相似文献

Ejecta from impact craters 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An important feature of impacts into Solar System bodies is the fate of crater ejecta, the near-surface material launched during the highly dynamic crater formation process. Laboratory measurements of impact crater ejecta from 18 studies are summarized. The data are examined and used to assess our understanding of how the ejecta velocity and mass distributions depend on the conditions of an impact event. The effects of impact speed on the ejecta are reasonably well understood, but the dependences on target properties such as strength and porosity are only poorly constrained. A point-source scaling model for the ejecta mass and velocity distributions is developed and fit to the data for several classes of materials distinguished by porosity. 相似文献

Viscous relaxation of impact craters on icy planetary surfaces: Determination of viscosity variation with depth 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spacecraft images show that the icy Galilean satellites have surfaces with very low topographic relief. Impact craters on Ganymede and Callisto are anomalously shallow and are characterized by sharp well-defined rims and domed floors. These morphological characteristics can be explained by viscous relaxation of topography on an icy crust in which the viscosity is uniform or decreases with depth. Under these conditions, large craters relax more rapidly than small craters, therefore explaining a possible underabundance of large craters. Viscous relaxation on an icy crust that is thin compared to the crater diameter or on a thick icy crust in which viscosity increases with depth could not produce this crater morphology and would result in the more rapid relaxation of small craters rather than large craters. The results of this study suggest that more detailed analysis of relaxing impact crater morphology may resolve the rate of viscosity decrease with depth and so provide evidence on the interior thermal evolution of icy planetary bodies. 相似文献

The existence of large terrestrial impact crater doublets and Martian crater doublets that have been inferred to be impact
craters demonstrates that simultaneous impact of two or more bodies occurs at nearly the same point on planetary surfaces.
An experimental study of simultaneous impact of two projectiles near one another shows that doublet craters with ridges perpendicular
to the bilateral axis of symmetry result when separation between impact points relative to individual crater diameter is large.
When separation is progressively less, elliptical craters with central ridges and central peaks, circular craters with flat
floors containing ridges and peaks, and circular craters with deep round bottoms are produced. These craters are similar in
structure to many of the large lunar craters. Results suggest that the simultaneous impact of meteoroids near one another
may be an important mechanism for the production of central peaks in large lunar craters. 相似文献

This study presents an automated system for cataloging impact craters using the MOLA 128 pixels/degree digital elevation model of Mars. Craters are detected by a two-step algorithm that first identifies round and symmetric topographic depressions as crater candidates and then selects craters using a machine-learning technique. The system is robust with respect to surface types; craters are identified with similar accuracy from all different types of martian surfaces without adjusting input parameters. By using a large training set in its final selection step, the system produces virtually no false detections. Finally, the system provides a seamless integration of crater detection with its characterization. Of particular interest is the ability of our algorithm to calculate crater depths. The system is described and its application is demonstrated on eight large sites representing all major types of martian surfaces. An evaluation of its performance and prospects for its utilization for global surveys are given by means of detailed comparison of obtained results to the manually-derived Catalog of Large Martian Impact Craters. We use the results from the test sites to construct local depth-diameter relationships based on a large number of craters. In general, obtained relationships are in agreement with what was inferred on the basis of manual measurements. However, we have found that, in Terra Cimmeria, the depth/diameter ratio has an abrupt decrease at ∼38°S regardless of crater size. If shallowing of craters is attributed to presence of sub-surface ice, a sudden change in its spatial distribution is suggested by our findings. 相似文献

The present study focuses both on the influence of impact scale on ejecta expansion and on specific features of ejecta deposits around relatively small craters (i.e., those a few kilometers in width). The numerical model is based on the SOVA multimaterial multidimensional hydrocode, considering subaerial vertical impacts only, applying a 2‐D version of the code to projectiles of 100, 300, and 1000 m diameter. Ejecta can roughly be divided into two categories: “ballistic” ejecta and “convective” ejecta; the ballistic ejecta are the ejecta with which the air interacts only slightly, while the convective ejecta motion is entirely defined by the air flow. The degree of particle/air interaction can be defined by the time/length of particle travel before deceleration. Ejecta size‐distributions for the impacts modeled can be described by the same power law, but the size of maximum fragment increases with scale. There is no qualitative difference between the 100 m diameter projectile case and the 300 m diameter projectile impact. In both cases, fine ejecta decelerate in the air at a small distance from launching point and then rise to the stratosphere by air flows induced by the impacts. In the 1000 m‐scale impact, the mass of ejecta is so large that it moves the atmosphere itself to high altitudes. Thus, the atmosphere cannot decelerate even the fine ejecta and they consequently expand to the rarefied upper atmosphere. In the upper atmosphere, even fine ejecta move more or less ballistically and therefore may travel to high altitudes. 相似文献

The preliminary conclusion of the Mariner 9 Television Team that the surfaces of Phobos and Deimos are saturated with craters larger than 0.2 km in diameter is reconsidered on the basis of more extensive and uniform crater counts. For Phobos, it is verified that the surface appears saturated with craters larger than 1 km in diameter. For craters smaller than 1 km, the data points fall below the saturation curve, and it is not clear that all the departure can be explained in terms of loss of resolution. For Deimos, because of the paucity of craters visible in the Mariner 9 images, a statistically meaningful crater density curve cannot be constructed. Definitive crater density curves for subkilometer craters can only be established once additional imagery at a resolution of better than 100 m is obtained. Such imagery will be provided by the 1976 Viking Orbiters. 相似文献

Research on the impact cratering process on icy bodies has been largely based on the most abundant ice, water. However little is known about the influence of other relatively abundant ices such as ammonia. Accordingly, data are presented studying the influence on cratering in ammonia rich ice using spherical 1 mm diameter stainless steel projectiles at velocities of 4.8±0.5 km s−1. The ice target composition ranged from pure water ice, to solutions containing 50% ammonia and 50% water by weight. Results for crater depth, diameter, volume and depth/diameter ratio are given. The results showed that the presence of ammonia in the ice had a very strong influence on crater diameter and morphology. It was found that with only a 10% concentration of ammonia, crater diameter significantly decreased, and then at greater concentrations became independent of ammonia content. Crater depth was independent of the presence of ammonia in the ice, and the crater volume appeared to decrease as ammonia concentration increased. Between ammonia concentrations of 10 and 20% crater morphology visibly changed from wide shallow craters with a deeper central pit to craters with a smoothly increasing depth from the crater rim to centre. Thus, a small amount of ammonia within a water ice surface may have a major effect on crater morphology. 相似文献

A thermodynamic model of meteorite impact is applied to determine if craters of equal diameter were necessarily created by events of similar thermal regimes. The particular case considered is that of a spherical basalt meteorite hitting a basalt target, and only two parameters are varied: impact velocity and meteorite radius. It is found that, in producing craters of equal diameter (20 cm), a small fast meteorite produces less melted and vaporized material, or tends to yield less glass, than does a large slow meteorite. Above 10 km s–1 the amount of melted material is a monotonically decreasing function of impact velocity; above 20 km s–1 the amount of vaporized material is a monotonically decreasing function of impact velocity. At 70 km s–1 only 23% as much melt and vapor is produced as at 10 km s–1, for events yielding equal crater diameters of 20 cm. According to the model used, this effect can be explained by observing that a meteorite with a small contact surface will deposit more heat and will produce a hotter but smaller amount of liquid than will a larger slower meteorite. Implications include, in principle, the possibility of estimating impact velocities by means of ejecta sample analysis. 相似文献

This article presents fractal analyses of 28 outflow margins from 18 Venusian impact craters. The fractal dimensions of the second parts of R-plots of the outflow outlines were measured by a three-step method. The fractality values for the same outflow measured from images which have only a small difference in resolution are very similar, while large differences in image resolution may result in differences in fractality, possibly due to the fact that we are actually studying geological processes on different scales. The outflows were classified into three general categories: single outflows, multiple outflows and outflow fields. Three conclusions were drawn on the relations between fractality and crater diameter, which may be related to the greater effects caused by the immediate local environment on the outflows from small craters than on those from larger craters. Investigation of the relations between the regional topography and fractality indicates that there are substantially less effects on outflows originating from large craters than on those from small craters. The smooth bending in the R-plot and the higher D-value for the multiple outflows could result from the mixing of various fractal or non-fractal units. When comparing our results with the fractality of terrestrial lava flows, outflows from craters of diameter greater than 50 km seem to resemble aa-type lava flows in their fractal dimensions and outflows from craters of diameter below 50 km tend to be more pahoehoe-like. This preliminary result is based on 28 outflows, however, and the pattern should be investigated more carefully by further more extensive work. 相似文献

The structural control of venusian polygonal impact craters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pre-impact inhomogeneities of the target material sometimes cause the rim of an impact crater to be composed of several straight segments, instead of being circular. The venusian surface hosts 121 such polygonal impact craters (PICs)>12 km in diameter. Their straight rim segments are often parallel to the orientations of the surrounding tectonic structures, particularly those in tessera terrain and young rift zones, as well as the concentric components of coronae. This match is notably more distinct in distances less than two crater diameters between the PICs and the tectonic structures than further away. Surrounding wrinkle ridges, lineaments or radial components of volcano-tectonic features seem to have very little influence on the orientations of PIC rims. These results imply that the formation of straight segments of venusian PIC rims is controlled by pre-existing tectonic structures of the crust, but not by the apparently most surficial ones. Thus, PICs could be used to provide further constraints on the distribution and orientations of zones of weakness in the venusian crust. 相似文献

Empirical formulae are presented for calculating the displaced mass, depth, diameter, and effects of oblique trajectories for impact craters formed in dense crystalline rocks. The formulae are applicable to craters with diameters from approximately 10?3–103 cm that require, respectively, impact kinetic energies of approximately 10 to 1016 ergs for their formation. The experimental results are in poor agreement with Öpik’s theoretical calculations and raise questions on the validity of his theoretical model. 相似文献

Many lunar craters greater than 10 km in diam exhibit a variety of morphological characteristics which are not produced by meteorite impact or meteorite erosion. Most such craters are located in or near the margins of the maria. Although some could have resulted from processes such as cauldron resurgence, caldera formation, or ring dike emplacement, most have formed by modification of impact craters by endogenic processes including erosion by flowing lava, fissure volcanism, plutonism and uplift of crater floors along ring fractures of impact origin. 相似文献

We conducted a systematic, global survey using Thermal Emission Imaging System Infrared (THEMIS IR) coverage (∼100 m/pixel) to search for large alluvial fans in impact craters on Mars. Our survey has focused on large fans (apron areas greater than ∼40 km2, usually located in craters greater than 20 km in diameter) due to the resolution of the THEMIS images and Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) coverage. We find that the host craters are found to have a distinctive diameter range from 30-150 km. The fans generally cluster in three geographic areas—southern Margaritifer Terra, southwestern Terra Sabaea, and southwestern Tyrrhena Terra, however several outliers do exist. The alluvial fans do not form in a particular orientation along the crater rim nor are they associated with the location of current high rim topography. Fan area magnitude and variability increase with crater diameter while fan concavity magnitude and variability increase with decreasing crater diameter. Smaller fan aprons in general have higher, more variable concavity. The source of the water forming these fans is uncertain given the challenges of accommodating the global distribution pattern and formation patterns within the craters. 相似文献

The very young Wabar craters formed by impact of an iron meteorite and are known to the scientific community since 1933. We describe field observations made during a visit to the Wabar impact site, provide analytical data on the material collected, and combine these data with poorly known information discovered during the recovery of the largest meteorites. During our visit in March 2008, only two craters (Philby‐B and 11 m) were visible; Philby‐A was completely covered by sand. Mapping of the ejecta field showed that the outcrops are strongly changing over time. Combining information from different visitors with our own and satellite images, we estimate that the large seif dunes over the impact site migrate by approximately 1.0–2.0 m yr?1 southward. Shock lithification took place even at the smallest, 11 m crater, but planar fractures (PFs) and undecorated planar deformation features (PDFs), as well as coesite and stishovite, have only been found in shock‐lithified material from the two larger craters. Shock‐lithified dune sand material shows perfectly preserved sedimentary structures including cross‐bedding and animal burrows as well as postimpact structures such as open fractures perpendicular to the bedding, slickensides, and radiating striation resembling shatter cones. The composition of all impact melt glasses can be explained as mixtures of aeolian sand and iron meteorite. We observed a partial decoupling of Fe and Ni in the black impact glass, probably due to partitioning of Ni into unoxidized metal droplets. The absence of a Ca‐enriched component demonstrates that the craters did not penetrate the bedrock below the sand sheet, which has an estimated thickness of 20–30 m. 相似文献

Abstract— To ascertain the progressive stages of shock metamorphism of zircon, samples from three well‐studied impact craters were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy in thin section and grain separates. These samples are comprised of well‐preserved, rapidly quenched impactites from the Ries crater, Germany, strongly annealed impactites from the Popigai crater, Siberia, and altered, variably quenched impactites from the Chicxulub crater, Mexico. The natural samples were compared with samples of experimentally shock‐metamorphosed zircon. Below 20 GPa, zircon exhibits no distinct shock features. Above 20 GPa, optically resolvable planar microstructures occur together with the high‐pressure polymorph reidite, which was only retained in the Ries samples. Decomposition of zircon to ZrO2 only occurs in shock stage IV melt fragments that were rapidly quenched. This is not only a result of post‐shock temperatures in excess of ?1700 °C but could also be shock pressure‐induced, which is indicated by possible relics of a high‐pressure polymorph of ZrO2. However, ZrO2 was found to revert to zircon with a granular texture during devitrification of impact melts. Other granular textures represent recrystallized amorphous ZrSiO4 and reidite that reverted to zircon. This requires annealing temperatures >1100 °C. A systematic study of zircons from a continuous impactite sequence of the Chicxulub impact structure yields implications for the post‐shock temperature history of suevite‐like rocks until cooling below ?600 °C. 相似文献

Impact craters on icy satellites display a wide range of morphologies, some of which have no counterpart on rocky bodies. Numerical simulation studies have struggled to reproduce the diversity of features, such as central pits and transitions in crater depth with increasing diameter, observed on the icy Galilean satellites. The transitions in crater depth (at diameters of about 26 and 150 km on Ganymede and Callisto) have been interpreted as reflecting subsurface structure. Using the CTH shock physics code, we model the formation of craters with diameters between 400 m and about 200 km on Ganymede using different subsurface temperature profiles. Our calculations include recent improvements in the model equation of state for H2O and quasi-static strength parameters for ice. We find that the shock-induced formation of dense high-pressure polymorphs (ices VI and VII) creates a gap in the crater excavation flow, which we call discontinuous excavation. For craters larger than about 20 km, discontinuous excavation concentrates a hot plug of material (>270 K and mostly on the melting curve) in the center of the crater floor. The size and occurrence of the hot plug are in good agreement with the observed characteristics of central pit craters, and we propose that a genetic link exists between them. We also derive depth versus diameter curves for different internal temperature profiles. In a 120 K isothermal crust, calculated craters larger than about 30 km diameter are deeper than observed and do not reproduce the transition at about 26 km diameter. Calculated crater depths are shallower and in good agreement with observations between about 30 and 150 km diameter using a warm thermal gradient representing a convective interior. Hence, the depth-to-diameter transition at about 26 km reflects thermal weakening of ice. Finally, simulation results generally support the hypothesis that the anomalous interior morphologies for craters larger than 100 km are related to the presence of a subsurface ocean. 相似文献

The morphological characteristics of craters with relatively small ratio depth/diameter are discussed. It is observed that many morphological similarities exist among craters possessing ratiosd/D which do not differ considerably. The distribution of 1933 craters with respect to diameter, depth and the depth/diameter ratio is presented. 相似文献

Confirmed small impact craters in unconsolidated deposits are rare on Earth, and only a few have been the subjects of detailed investigations. Consequently, our knowledge of indicators permitting unambiguous identification of such structures is limited. In this work, detailed geological mapping was performed in the area of the Morasko craters, of which the largest crater is of about 96 m diameter. These craters were formed in the mid‐Holocene (~5000 yr ago) in unconsolidated sediments of a glacial terminal moraine. Fragments of the impactor—an iron meteorite—have been found in the craters’ vicinity for many decades. Despite numerous studies of the meteorite, no detailed research concerning the geological structure around the craters and of the ejecta deposits has been undertaken. The new data, including evaluation of over 52 sediment cores and 260 shallow drillings, permit the identification of four main sediment types: Neogene clays, diamicton with Neogene clay clasts containing charcoal pieces, diamicton without clasts, and sand with locally preserved paleosoil and charcoal pieces. Based on sedimentological properties, the ejecta deposits are mainly identified as diamicton with Neogene clay clasts, described as lithic impact breccia, covering locally preserved pre‐impact soil. Moreover, crater sections characterized by inverse stratigraphy of sediments are identified as belonging to overturned flaps. 相似文献
