Low altitude satellite observations of precipitated and locally mirroring protons during periods of ground-based SAR arc observations are presented. The SAR arcs are found to be located in a region with significantly enhanced proton pitch angle scattering and enhanced electron temperature, but inside the plasmapause where the proton pitch angle distribution is anisotropic. The increase in the pitch angle scattering takes place in a localized region having a width of a few tenths of a L-value. The observations can favourably be accounted for by the Cornwall et al. (1971) theory for the SAR arc formation. Using observed proton fluxes and typical energy spectra, the expected intensity in the SAR arc region is estimated to be a few Rayleighs, and the energy flux from precipitated protons above a few keV to be 10?2?10?1erg/cm2s. These estimates are in reasonable agreement with previously published theoretical and experimental values. Simultaneous groundbased observations of Hα emissions were found in the region of intense, isotropic proton precipitation located outside the plasmapause.  相似文献

Simultaneous optical and particle data from the ISIS-2 satellite are used to characterize polar cap arcs. Polar cap arcs are identified from two-dimensional geomagnetic transforms of the optical data along with precipitating electron data for the time at which the satellite is on the field line intersecting the arc. No precipitating protons were detected for any of the arc crossings. The pitch angle. distribution of the precipitating electrons is generally isotropic and the differential electron spectra show enhancements in the flux in the 300–750 eV energy range. The average energy of the precipitating electrons for the different arcs ranges from about 300 to 600 eV. A possible explanation of the observed precipitating particle characteristics is that parallel electric fields are accelerating polar rain type spectra at an altitude of several thousand km. For the arc crossings reported here the equivalent 4278 Å emission rate per unit energy deposition rate has a mean value of 162 R/(erg cm?2 s?1). Average 3914 Å intensities are about 0.8 kR while 6300 Å intensities range from 0.5 to 3 kR. Model calculations indicate that direct impact excitation is a minor source for the 5577 Å emission rate, but supplies approx. 40% of the 6300 Å emission.  相似文献

SAR arcs were observed from Southern Africa on 17/18 December 1971, 4/5 August 1972 and 1/2 April 1973 with the equatorwards edge at L = 1.8. Simultaneous with the latter event the intertropical arc was observed at an equatorial station. There was no apparent relationship. Calculations show that while the entire observed inter-tropical emission results from dissociative recombination of O2+ this process may, in some cases, account for only a fraction of a percent of the observed SAR arc emission. More than five years of geomagnetic storm data shows that Southern African SAR arcs are unlikely unless disturbances exceed 150 γ. For very severe 300 γ disturbances main phase SAR arcs may be observed. Estimates of the fraction of storm energy used in production of the present arcs indicate they are inefficient sinks for magnetic storms.  相似文献

The ionization structure of the auroral arc was measured on a sounding rocket which penetrated into a bright auroral arc. The E-region electron density becomes large (2 ~ 5 × 105 el/cm3 only in the moving auroral arc, whose N2+ 4278 Å brightness is 1 ~ 2·5 kR. The electron density in the D-region beneath the lower boundary of the arc (75 ~ 98 km in altitude) is also considerably enhanced to 2 ~ 5 × 104 el/cm3.The observed E-region electron density can be interpreted theoretically as due to the direct ionization by precipitating electrons, whose energy spectrum is approximately represented by an exponential type having the characteristic energy of 2 keV. The correlation between the electron density and the N2+ 4278 Å brightness can be reasonably explained by considering the simultaneous effects on the ionization and the optical excitation caused by the primary electrons having a flux of 9 × 109 el/cm2/sec per 1 kR of the 4278 Å emission.Further analyses using the electron density data from four other sounding rockets have shown that the D-region ionization has good correlations to the cosmic noise absorption (CNA) and the magnetic substorm activities observed simultaneously at the ground station, whereas it has poor correlation to the same quantity of the E-region measured in the same experiment. It is found that the observed D-region ionization is much larger than that predicted by the theory which takes into account the Bremsstrahlung X-ray ionization along with the direct impact ionization when it is applied to the precipitating electron flux spectrum consistent to the E-region ionization and optical excitation. After all the present experimental results suggest a dual nature of the electron precipitation spectrum in the substorm, i.e. the softer part which is localized in the auroral arc and the harder part which is spatially wide-spread over the substorm area.  相似文献

Eighty MHz observations of the occultation of the radio source Culgoora-1 0300 + 16 by the plasma tail of Comet Kohoutek (1973f) were made in February/March 1974 with the Culgoora radioheliograph. No detectable source broadening or change in flux density was observed, but the results showed a 2' arc anomaly in the observed position. This is greater than can be attributed to ionospheric refraction or experimental error. We suggest that it arose from refraction in the plasma tail of the comet. Similar observations of the occulation of the radio source Culgoora-1 2313-14 by the plasma tail of Comet West (1975n) were made at Culgoora in February 1976. These results were inconclusive but did suggest that the cometary plasma may have had some influence on the observed source position. The results are used to derive, from simple models, the distribution of electron density in comet tails. Peak electron densities of approximately 2 to 5 × 104 cm?3 and density gradients of ~0.05 cm?3 km?1 are indicated.  相似文献

The propagation and modulation of electrons in the heliosphere play an important part in improving our understanding and assessment of the modulation processes. A full three-dimensional numerical model is used to study the modulation of galactic electrons, from Earth into the inner heliosheath, over an energy range from 10 MeV to 30 GeV. The modeling is compared with observations of 6–14 MeV electrons from Voyager 1 and observations at Earth from the PAMELA mission. Computed spectra are shown at different spatial positions. Based on comparison with Voyager 1 observations, a new local interstellar electron spectrum is calculated. We find that it consists of two power-laws: In terms of kinetic energy E, the results give E ?1.5 below ~500 MeV and E ?3.15 at higher energies. Radial intensity profiles are computed also for 12 MeV electrons, including a Jovian source, and compared to the 6–14 MeV observations from Voyager 1. Since the Jovian and galactic electrons can be separated in the model, we calculate the intensity of galactic electrons below 100 MeV at Earth. The highest possible differential flux of galactic electrons at Earth with E=12 MeV is found to have a value of 2.5×10?1 electrons m?2?s?1?sr?1?MeV?1 which is significantly lower (a factor of 3) than the Jovian electron flux at Earth. The model can also reproduce the extraordinary increase of electrons by a factor of 60 at 12 MeV in the inner heliosheath. A lower limit for the local interstellar spectrum at 12 MeV is estimated to have a value of (90±10) electrons m?2?s?1?sr?1?MeV?1.  相似文献

High resolution electric field and particle data, obtained by the S23L1 rocket crossing over a discrete prebreakup arc in January 1979, are studied in coordination with ground observations (Scandinavian Magnetometer Array—SMA, TV and all-sky cameras) in order to clarify the electrodynamics of the arc and its surroundings. Height-integrated conductivities have been calculated from the particle data, including the ionization effects of precipitating protons and assuming a steady state balance between ion production and recombination losses. High resolution optical information of arc location relative to the rocket permitted a check of the validity of this assumption for each flux tube passed by the rocket. Another check was provided by a comparison between calculated (equilibrium values) and observed electron densities along the rocket trajectory. A way to compensate for the finite precipitation time when calculating the electron densities is outlined. The height-integrated HalI-Pedersen conductivity ratio is typically 1.4 within the arc and about 1 at the arc edges, indicative of a relatively softer energy spectrum there. The height-integrated conductivities combined with the DC electric field measurements permitted calculation of the horizontal ionospheric current vectors (J), Birkeland currents (from div J) and energy dissipation through Joule heating (ΣpE2). An eastward current of typically 1 A m?1 was found to be concentrated mainly to the arc region and equatorward of it. A comparison has been made with the equivalent current system deduced from ground based magnetometer data (SMA) showing a generally good agreement with the rocket results. An intense Pedersen current peak (1.2 A m?1) was found at the southern arc edge. This edge constituted a division line between a very intense (> 10 μA m?1) and localized (~ 6 km) downward current sheet to the south, probably carried by upward flowing cold ionospheric electrons and a more extended upward current sheet (> 10 μA m?2) over the arc carried by measured precipitating electrons. Joule and particle heating across the arc were anticorrelated, consistent with the findings of Evans et al. (1977) with a total value of about 100mW m?2.  相似文献

We present the observations of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with the main detector of the SIGMA telescope onboard the Granat Observatory from January 1990 through September 1994. The observations were carried out in the energy range 35–1300 keV. We detected 36 GRBs and 31 high-energy solar flares during this period. No GRB fell within the main field of view; they were all recorded by the “secondary optics” of the telescope. The SIGMA telescope recorded relatively bright bursts with peak fluxes of 10?6–10?4 erg s?1 cm?2 in the 100–500-keV energy band. Stable detector background allows the long-term variability of GRB sources on a time scale of ~1000 s to be studied. The results of our search for early afterglows of GRBs are presented. The flux averaged over all bursts in the interval 100–800 s after the main event is 0.36±0.14 counts s?(35–300 keV), suggesting that there is soft gamma-ray emission on this time scale after a considerable number of GRBs.  相似文献

A sounding rocket was flown during the predawn on 17 January, 1976 from Uchinoura, Japan, to measure directly the behaviour of the conjugate photoelectrons at magnetically low latitudes. On board the rocket were an electron energy analyzer, 630 nm airglow photometer, and plasma probes to measure electron density and temperature. The incoming flux of the photoelectrons was measured in the altitude range between 210 and 340 km. The differential flux at the top of the atmosphere was determined to be F = (1.3 ± 0.4) × 1011exp[?E(eV)12] electron · m?2 · sr?1 · s?1 in the energy range 10 ? E ? 50 eV. The emission rate of the 630 nm airglow was observed in the altitude range between 90 and 360 km. The apparent emission rate observed at 80 km was 32 ± 5 R. From a theoretical calculation of the optical excitation rate using the observed electron flux data along with a model distribution of atomic oxygen, it was estimated that more than 65% of the emission could be produced by direct impact of the photoelectrons with atomic oxygen in the thermosphere between 200 and 360 km. Using the observed electron density and the model distribution of oxygen molecules the residual of the emission was ascribed to the excitation of O(1D) through dissociative recombination, O2++eO1 + O7. The direct collisional excitation by ambient electrons is estimated to be negligibly small at the level of observed electron temperature.  相似文献

Interferometric radio observations together with soft X-ray observations are presented here to show that during the growth phase of soft X-ray flares, a large mass increase occurs simultaneously with the creation of an X-ray hot region in the corona. The lack of an increase of radio flux from pre-flare active regions absolutely excludes the possibility of the coronal accumulation of low-temperature matter just prior to flare onset. Therefore we suggest a hypothesis that a large amount of hot matter, which contains almost the entire energy in the flare, is supplied from the chromosphere into the corona during each flare. Since even small flares produce coronal hot regions radiating thermal soft X-rays and microwaves, the formation of the hot region may be a basic process in most flares. Energy, created by some instability in the corona, travels by thermal conduction to the chromosphere where the dense matter is heated and subsequently expands into the corona, producing the observed hot region. Impulsive heating of the chromosphere by nonthermal electrons which simultaneously emit hard X-rays is not sufficient to be the energy source in our model. Slower heating, which supplies the flare more energy than that supplied in the impulsive phase, is required. If the temperature of the energy source in the corona exceeds 2 × 107 K, the conductive energy flux becomes sufficient to exceed the radiation loss from the chromosphere-corona transition region. This excess energy may cause the chromospheric gas expansion.  相似文献

Radio and X-ray observations are presented for three flares which show significant activity for several minutes prior to the main impulsive increase in the hard X-ray flux. The activity in this ‘pre-flash’ phase is investigated using 3.5 to 461 keV X-ray data from the Solar Maximum Mission, 100 to 1000 MHz radio data from Zürich, and 169 MHz radio-heliograph data from Nançay. The major results of this study are as follows:
  1. Decimetric pulsations, interpreted as plasma emission at densities of 109–1010 cm?3, and soft X-rays are observed before any Hα or hard X-ray increase.
  2. Some of the metric type III radio bursts appear close in time to hard X-ray peaks but delayed between 0.5 and 1.5 s, with the shorter delays for the bursts with the higher starting frequencies.
  3. The starting frequencies of these type III bursts appear to correlate with the electron temperatures derived from isothermal fits to the hard X-ray spectra. Such a correlation is expected if the particles are released at a constant altitude with an evolving electron distribution. In addition to this effect we find evidence for a downward motion of the acceleration site at the onset of the flash phase.
  4. In some cases the earlier type III bursts occurred at a different location, far from the main position during the flash phase.
  5. The flash phase is characterized by higher hard X-ray temperatures, more rapid increase in X-ray flux, and higher starting frequency of the coincident type III bursts.

Radar and rocket electric field observations of auroral arcs have earlier been used to identify essentially four different arc types, namely anticorrelation and correlation arcs (with, respectively, decreased and increased arc-associated field) and asymmetric and reversal arcs. In this paper, rocket double probe and supplementary observations from the literature, obtained under various geophysical conditions, are used to organize the different arc types on a physical rather than morphological basis. This classification is based on the relative influence on the electric field pattern from the two current continuity mechanisms, polarization electric fields and Birkeland currents. In this context the tangential electric field plays an essential role and it is thus important that it can be obtained with both high accuracy and resolution. In situ observations by sounding rockets are shown to be better suited for this specific task than monostatic radar observations. Depending on the dominating mechanism, estimated quantitatively for a number of arc-crossings, the different arc types have been grouped into the following main categories: Polarization arcs, Birkeland current arcs and Combination arcs. Finally the high altitude potential distributions corresponding to some of the different arc types are presented.  相似文献

The UCSD X-ray telescope on OSO-3 scanned Jupiter for 33 days during February and March 1968. We have searched the data for a steady Jovian flux, and for a burst component at times of decametric radio bursts. Neither component was detected at a sensitivity of ~0.1 photon (cm2sec)?1 for hv > 7.7 keV. At 4.4AU, the 3σ upper limits correspond to X-ray luminosities of 7.4 × 1019 ergs sec?1 for the steady component, and 2 × 1020 ergs sec?1 for the burst component. The observations occurred during a period of high solar activity, during which three sudden-commencement magnetic storms were observed at Earth. We compare the upper limits with several different calculations of the expected flux levels, and conclude that major improvements in X-ray detection techniques will be required before Jovian X rays can be detected with near-Earth observations.  相似文献

It is shown that photoionization of vibrationally excited H2 and photodissociation of the H 2 + ions produced thereby constitute a significant electron production route in high UV flux situations. A significant fraction of the electron density in the direction of ζ Oph (?15 km s?1 cloud) deduced from observations may be expected to arise in this way.  相似文献

We present the results of our observations of the H2O maser emission toward the complex source ON2 associated with an active star-forming region. The observations were performed in a wide range of radial velocities, from ?75 to 90 km s?1. We have detected an emission with flux densities of 9.2, 4, and 26 Jy at radial velocities of ?33.5, ?24.4, and ?18.8 km s?1, respectively, at which no emission has been observed previously. The detected emission is most likely associated with a hitherto unknown cluster of maser spots located between the northern (N) and southern (S) components of the source ON2 (closer to the northern one). This cluster may be associated with one of the three CO molecular outflows in the ON2 region. We have also detected an emission at ?22 and ?14.5 km s?1 in N and at 12.6 km s?1 in S, which has extended significantly the velocity ranges of the maser emission in these sources and allowed their models to be improved.  相似文献

The results of long-term photometric and spectroscopic observations of the young compact planetary nebula Vy 2-2 (PNG 045.4-02.7) are presented. The UBV photometry in 1990–2016 has revealed a slight brightness trend in the yearly averaged data, most pronounced in the V band. We have measured the relative fluxes of optical emission lines on the spectrograms taken with the 1.25-m telescope at the Southern Station of the SAI MSU in 1999–2016, estimated the absolute flux in the Hβ line to be F(Hβ) = (2.1 ± 0.4) × 10?12 erg cm?2 s?1, and determined the interstellar extinction constant c(Hβ) = 1.8. The electron temperature and density in the nebula have been estimated from diagnostic line ratios: Te = (10?12) × 103 K and Ne ≥ 105 cm?3. To detect any possible evolutionary changes, we have compared the new observations with the archival data obtained over the entire history of spectroscopic observations of Vy 2-2. No significant changes in the relative intensities of the strongest emission lines and the integrated flux in the Hβ line exceeding the observational errors have been found. We have revealed a tendency for the intensity ratio F(λ4363)/F(λ4959) to decrease with time, which may be related to a decrease in the electron density in the nebula. Based on our photometric and spectroscopic data, we have estimated the luminosity of the central star of Vy 2-2, which corresponds to the evolutionary tracks for the most massive post-AGB stars of the O-rich sequence.  相似文献

Photoelectron flux in the energy range 6–70 eV coming from the sunlight conjugate ionosphere has been measured directly by the rocket borne low energy electron spectrometer in the altitude region of 210–350 km. Pitch angle distribution of the measured flux is nearly isotropic, the flux decreasing slightly with pitch angle. The photoelectron fluxes measured at 350 km at the energies of 15 and 30 eV are 3 × 106 and 1 × 106 (cm2 s str eV)?1 respectively which decrease to 1 × 106 and 1 × 105 at 250 km at the same energies. These values are consistent with the vertical profile of the 630 nm airglow intensity measured simultaneously. The fluxes obtained near apogee show peaks in the range 20–30 eV which also appear in the daytime photoelectron flux, indicating reduced loss of electrons during the passage from the conjugate ionosphere through the plasmasphere at the low geomagnetic latitude where observation was made. Photoelectron fluxes observed below the apogee height are compared to the calculated fluxes to investigate the interaction of electrons with the atmospheric species during the passage in the ionosphere. Calculated fluxes obtained by using continuous slowing-down approximation and neglecting pitch angle scattering are in good agreement with the observations although there still remain disagreements in detailed comparison which may be ascribed to the assumptions inherent in the calculation and/or to the uncertainties of the input data for the calculation.  相似文献

We present the observations of Cygnus X-3 carried out with the GT-48 gamma-ray telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in 1994–1995. The mean gamma-ray flux at energy E>1012 eV is shown to be approximately equal to 1.3×10?11 cm?2 s?1. The flux in 1994 was much lower than that in 1995, being (6.2±2.6)×10?12 cm?2 s?1; i.e., it was statistically insignificant. The flux in 1995 was (2.7±0.7)×10?11 cm?2 s?1. Thus, the very high energy gamma-ray emission from Cyg X-3 is variable. These measurement results can be used to obtain upper limits on the flux from Cyg X-3 in 1994–1995.  相似文献
