A maximal spectrum of gravitational radiation from sources outside our galaxy is calculated. The sources are galaxies, quasars and events that occur in the early history of the universe. The major contribution is from galaxies whose effect extends over the frequency region 10–810+4Hz, peaking at 10–110 Hz, with a spectral flux of 10 erg cm–2, s–1. The main processes of gravitational radiation in the galaxies are stellar collapse into a black hole and dying binary systems. In the region 10–4104 Hz the background spectrum is well above the detection levels of currently proposed detectors. FromMinimal considerations of this spectrum it is determined that the density of gravitational radiation is 10–39g cm–3. This background spectrum is sensitive to galactic evolution and especially sensitive to the upper mass limits and mass distribution of stars in galactic models. Therefore, the spectrum could provide information about galactic evolution complementary to that obtained by electromagnetic investigations.  相似文献

Intense low-frequency intergalactic gravitational radiation with wave lengths λ smaller than the HUBBLE distance λH ≌ 3000 (100/H0) Mpc but not exceedingly small compared to λH. generates anisotropies in the microwave background radiation. One contribution results from the local wave field and produces mainly a quadrupole-type temperature variation on the sky. Available data on large-scale microwave fluctuations do not exclude appreciable amounts of gravitational background radiation in the Megaparsec wave band. A more sensitive test is provided by a second far-field contribution, which has a small angular scale. Its amplitude depends strongly on the ratio of the (present) rest mass density to the HUBBLE constant, if a cosmological origin of the blackbody radiation is assumed. In a low-density universe, pre-galactic COMPTON scattering of the blackbody radiation is not able to reduce the fluctuations caused by the low-frequency gravitational wave field. The recent small-scale data by PARIJSKIJ would allow only small amplitudes of gravitational waves with an energy density significantly below the critical cosmological density. On the other hand, in a high-density universe, the small angular scale fluctuation in the blackbody radiation is completely damped out, and a gravitational radiation cosmos reaching the critical density is admitted. Independent of the matter density, the data by PARIJSKIJ would confine gravitational background radiation to insignificant amplitudes if a discrete source model for the origin of the microwave background has to be assumed.  相似文献

We propose a -inflation model that explains a significant part of the COBE signal by primordial cosmic gravitational waves. The primordial density perturbations fulfil both the constraints of large-scale microwave background and galaxy cluster normalization. The model is tested against the galaxy cluster power spectrum and the high-multipole angular cosmic microwave background anisotropy.  相似文献

In the present paper the gravitational radiation emitted from large solar energetic flares and from the Sun as a whole in the course of the generation shock waves and quadrupole oscillations of the solar body are studied. The expected densities of the energy fluxes of the gravitational radiation at the distance of the Earth are calculated.  相似文献

We discuss gravitational radiation from a neutral mass particle within a bound orbit in the background Schwarzschild metric. We compare the power loss of gravitational radiation according to this formalism with the heuristic quadrupole radiation formula as applied to a binary system. There are evidence and compelling reasons to believe that the quadrupole formula is valid even in a fairly strong gravitational field, although its fully consistent analytical derivation is not yet known. In particular, we emphasize that the application of the quadrupole formula to the binary pulsar system PSR 1913+16 as well as other binary pulsars, which are weakly bound by gravity, is well justified.  相似文献

A procedure with a Bayesan approach for calculating upper limits to gravitational wave bursts from coincidence experiments with multiple detectors is described, where the detection efficiency for small signals is taken into consideration. The Bayesan approach to the upper limit estimation is confronted with the unified approach for the case when no events are observed in presence of a non-zero background.  相似文献

In the framework of unifying gravity and electromagnetism, we have shown that accelerating objects emit gravitational wave as those determined by Larmor formula for the accelerating charged particle. We have found new formulae for the power of Gravitational waves radiated by spinning and orbiting objects. The minimum wavelength of the gravitational wave emitted by an object of mass m and radius R is .  相似文献

A new, rigorous model is developed for the difference of gravitational potential between two close earth-orbiting satellites in terms of measured range-rates, velocities and velocity differences, and specific forces. It is particularly suited to regional geopotential determination from a satellite-to-satellite tracking mission. Based on energy considerations, the model specifically accounts for the time variability of the potential in inertial space, principally due to earth’s rotation. Analysis shows the latter to be a significant (±1 m2/s2) effect that overshadows by many orders of magnitude other time dependencies caused by solar and lunar tidal potentials. Also, variations in earth rotation with respect to terrestrial and celestial coordinate frames are inconsequential. Results of simulations contrast the new model to the simplified linear model (relating potential difference to range-rate) and delineate accuracy requirements in velocity vector measurements needed to supplement the range-rate measurements. The numerical analysis is oriented toward the scheduled Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission and shows that an accuracy in the velocity difference vector of 2×10−5 m/s would be commensurate within the model to the anticipated accuracy of 10−6 m/s in range-rate. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We use the large cosmological Millennium Simulation (MS) to construct the first all-sky maps of the lensing potential and the angle, aiming at gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), with the goal of properly including small-scale non-linearities and non-Gaussianity. Exploiting the Born approximation, we implement a map-making procedure based on direct ray tracing through the gravitational potential of the MS. We stack the simulation box in redshift shells up to z ∼ 11, producing continuous all-sky maps with arcmin angular resolution. A randomization scheme avoids the repetition of structures along the line of sight, and structures larger than the MS box size are added to supply the missing contribution of large-scale (LS) structures to the lensing signal. The angular power spectra of the projected lensing potential and the deflection-angle modulus agree quite well with semi-analytic estimates on scales down to a few arcmin, while we find a slight excess of power on small scales, which we interpret as being due to non-linear clustering in the MS. Our map-making procedure, combined with the LS adding technique, is ideally suited for studying lensing of CMB anisotropies, for analysing cross-correlations with foreground structures, or other secondary CMB anisotropies such as the Rees–Sciama effect.  相似文献

Modern ground-based gravitational-wave antennas designed to detect bursts of gravitational radiation from astrophysical catastrophes are described. Basic antenna characteristics, peculiarities of the noise background in antennas from various sources, and methods of their suppression are presented. The contribution from cosmic rays to the background is estimated. New programs of searching for low-frequency gravitational waves and potentialities for increasing the sensitivity of antennas of new types are briefly described.  相似文献

Stars on eccentric orbits around a massive black hole (MBH) emit bursts of gravitational waves (GWs) at periapse. Such events may be directly resolvable in the Galactic Centre. However, if the star does not spiral in, the emitted GWs are not resolvable for extragalactic MBHs, but constitute a source of background noise. We estimate the power spectrum of this extreme mass ratio burst background (EMBB) and compare it to the anticipated instrumental noise of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). To this end, we model the regions close to an MBH, accounting for mass segregation, and for processes that limit the presence of stars close to the MBH, such as GW inspiral and hydrodynamical collisions between stars. We find that the EMBB is dominated by GW bursts from stellar mass black holes, and the magnitude of the noise spectrum  ( fS GW)1/2  is at least a factor of ∼10 smaller than the instrumental noise. As an additional result of our analysis, we show that LISA is unlikely to detect relativistic bursts in the Galactic Centre.  相似文献

From the assumption of a universal upper limit for the temperature of about 1012 K which is suggested by the experiences of high energy physics, it follows taking additionally into account the strong interaction between hadrons explicitly that in the earliest stage of the Universe the numbers of nucleon number by a factor of about 107. Accordingly the 3K background radiation, is generated for the most part by annihilation of nearly all primordial heavy particles.  相似文献
