The general solution for the distribution of ages for primary galactic cosmic rays is given for a class of steady-state, bounded models of cosmic-ray diffusion in the Galaxy. Both one-and threedimensional models are considered, with point sources and distributed sources. In all models, the age distribution, is approximately exponential for ages longer than the average age, although for shorter ages the distribution depends on the details of the model. The leaky-box model, with an exponential age distribution, is thus a good approximation to most diffusive models. It is shown that one-dimensional (disk) models are consistent with both age and anisotropy data for galactic cosmic rays regardless of whether production takes place near the galactic center or throughout the disk.  相似文献

The origin and behavior of cosmic rays in the Galaxy depends crucially upon whether the galactic magnetic field has a closed topology, as does the field of Earth, or whether a major fraction of the lines of force connect into extragalactic space. If the latter, then cosmic rays could be of extragalactic origin, or they could be of galactic origin, detained in the Galaxy by the scattering offered by hydromagnetic waves, etc. If, on the other hand, the field is largely closed, then cosmic rays cannot be of extragalactic origin (at least below 1016 eV). They must be of galactic origin and escape because their collective pressure inflates the galactic field and they push their way out. This paper examines the structure of a galactic field that opens initially into intergalactic space and, with the inclusion of turbulent diffusion, finds no possibility for maintaining a significant magnetic connection with an extragalactic field. Unless some mechanism can be found, we are forced to the conclusion that the field is closed, that cosmic rays are of galactic origin, and that cosmic rays escape from the Galaxy only by pushing their way out.  相似文献

The propagation of radioactive nuclei of cosmic rays in a flat diffusion galactic model (sources and the main gaseous mass are concentrated in the galactic disc) is considered. The corresponding results are not reducible to the results of a simple homogeneous model. It is shown that the recent data on the Be10 nuclei abundance in cosmic rays do not contradict the occurrence of a large cosmic ray halo.  相似文献

We investigate the problem of transition from galactic cosmic rays to extragalactic ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Using the model for extragalactic ultra-high energy cosmic rays and observed all-particle cosmic ray spectrum, we calculate the galactic spectrum of iron nuclei in the energy range 108–109 GeV. The flux and spectrum predicted at lower energies agree well with the KASCADE data. The transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays is distinctly seen in spectra of protons and iron nuclei, when they are measured separately. The shape of the predicted iron spectrum agrees with the Hall diffusion.  相似文献

We study the impact of possible spiral-arm distributions of Galactic cosmic-ray sources on the flux of various cosmic-ray nuclei throughout our Galaxy. We investigate model cosmic-ray spectra at the nominal position of the sun and at different positions within the Galaxy. The modelling is performed using the recently introduced numerical cosmic ray propagation code Picard. Assuming non-axisymmetric cosmic-ray source distributions yields new insights on the behaviour of primary versus secondary nuclei. We find that primary cosmic rays are more strongly confined to the vicinity of the sources, while the distribution of secondary cosmic rays is much more homogeneous compared to the primaries. This leads to stronger spatial variation in secondary to primary ratios when compared to axisymmetric source distribution models. A good fit to the cosmic-ray data at Earth can be accomplished in different spiral-arm models, although leading to decisively different spatial distributions of the cosmic-ray flux. These lead to different cosmic ray anisotropies, where even reproducing the data becomes possible. Consequently, we advocate directions to seek best fit propagation parameters that take into account the higher complexity introduced by the spiral-arm structure on the cosmic-ray distribution. We specifically investigate whether the flux at Earth is representative for a large fraction of the Galaxy. The variance among possible spiral-arm models allows us to quantify the spatial variation of the cosmic-ray flux within the Galaxy in presence of non-axisymmetric source distributions.  相似文献

Cosmic rays are a sample of solar, galactic and extragalactic matter. Their origin and properties are one of the most intriguing question in modern astrophysics. The most energetic events and active objects in the Universe: supernovae explosion, pulsars, relativistic jets, active galactic nuclei, have been proposed as sources of cosmic rays although unambiguous evidences have still to be found. Electrons, while comprising ∼1% of the cosmic radiation, have unique features providing important information regarding the origin and propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy that is not accessible from the study of the cosmic-ray nuclear components due to their differing energy-loss processes. In this paper we will analyse, discussing the experimental uncertainties and challenges, the most recent measurements on cosmic-ray nuclei and, in particular, electrons with energies from tens of GeV into the TeV region.  相似文献

We set up diffusion equations for the nuclear component of cosmic rays and solve these to find the ratio of light to medium nuclei in the cosmic rays as well as the gamma-ray distribution in our Galaxy. From a comparison of our calculated quantities with observational data we determine the values of various parameters appearing in the model. We find that best agreement between theory and observations is obtained if the cosmic-ray confinement region consists of a narrow disk of total height 160 pc and radius 16 kpc, where the cosmic-ray sources are located, and an extensive halo of height 20 kpc. The diffusion coefficient near the Sun must be between 1026 and 1027 cm2 s–1 while it equals 1028 to 1029 cm2 s–1 in the halo. Finally, we find that the diffusion coefficient in the Galaxy must depend on the gas density as a power law with an index of the order of –1.  相似文献

High energy protons produced by various sources of cosmic rays, e.g., supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts, participate in Pγ and pp interactions. Although pp interactions may be the dominant mechanism in our Galaxy, it is unclear how important pγ process is. We show that the upper bound on the fraction of total number of protons participating in pγ interactions inside all Galactic astrophysical sources of cosmic rays is 10%.  相似文献

The spectrum of galactic primary cosmic rays at relativistic monenta is calculated. The primaries are assumed to be accelerated continuously from the thermal galactic background medium by first- and second-order Fermi acceleration. We show that the observed spectrum is readily obtained from the transport equation conventionally invoked to discuss propagation and loss of cosmic rays in our Galaxy from a distribution of sources. We have previously (Lerche and Schlickeiser, 1985) shown that the observed secondary to primary ratio is satisfactorily explained by a similar use of the transport equation, allowing for secondary production from the primaries. Accordingly, when the results of this paper are added to those concerning the secondary/primary ratio behaviour, it would seem that continuous Fermi acceleration accounts, in a quantitative fashion, for the spectral behaviours observed at Earth.  相似文献

The hydrostatic equilibrium of the gas field system is studied in the halo. Cosmic-ray distribution is considered independently from the magnetic field on the basis of the diffusion model of the propagation of cosmic rays. We show that the cosmic rays extend in the halo to distances of a few kiloparsecs. The magnetic field decreases slowly with height above the galactic plane.  相似文献

It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Such emission can be amplified if cosmic rays penetrate into dense molecular clouds. The propagation of cosmic rays inside a molecular cloud has been studied assuming an arbitrary energy and space dependent diffusion coefficient. If the diffusion coefficient inside the cloud is significantly smaller compared to the average one derived for the galactic disk, the observed gamma-ray spectrum appears harder than the cosmic ray spectrum, mainly due to the slower penetration of the low energy particles towards the core of the cloud. This may produce a great variety of gamma-ray spectra.  相似文献

Many years ago physical and radio-astronomical arguments and data led to the assumption that cosmic rays in the Galaxy (and probably in other galaxies) fill a more or less extended halo, but are not concentrated in the disk. It was not so long ago, however, that the existence of a radio-halo was discovered, in which the effective dimensions increase with a decrease in frequency. The frequency decrease occurs when relativistic electrons diffuse from the disk, losing energy due to bremsstrahlung and Compton scattering.Meanwhile, some ambiguity on the question of the existence of a radio-halo, and other reasons, have led to a rather wide use of disk models, particularly those in which cosmic rays are present in the Galaxy only for a periodT cr,d3×106 yr. The authors have repeatedly stated the inadmissibility of such models and, generally, a homogeneous (leaky box) model for the origin of cosmic rays. The new data concerning the amount of radioactive10Be nuclei in cosmic rays near the Earth in no way contradict the halo models in which the lifetime of cosmic rays isT cr,h108 yr. In connection with the continuing controversy, the present paper is devoted to a detailed consideration of the difference between the homogeneous and diffusion models. Within the latter models some calculations on the chemical composition of cosmic rays have been carried out, which concern not only stable but also radioactive isotopes.  相似文献

With the help of empirical data concerning the latitudinal distribution of galactic gamma rays the contribution of inverse Compton scattered gamma rays is calculated using various models concerning the distribution of high energy cosmic ray electrons perpendicular to the galactic plane. It is shown that gamma ray astronomy from regions with vanishing stellar and interstellar matter densities at energies greater than 100 MeV provides instructive information on the cosmic ray electron density. We find evidence for the existence of a broad galactic electron disk with a total thickness of at least 6.4 kpc. The uncertainties of the cosmic ray electron spectrum measurements above 100 GeV imply an additional uncertainty in the inverse Compton source function of at least a factor 6.  相似文献

The effect of high-speed recurrent solar wind streams from coronal holes on the galactic cosmic rays intensity is investigated. The distribution of galactic cosmic rays for different solar cycles is considered based on the data of the world network of neutron monitors. Within the inhomogeneous model, which includes a homogeneous background and regions of high-speed streams (HSS’s), the transport equation has been solved and the effect of HSS’s on the spatial distribution of galactic cosmic rays is estimated. It is shown that theoretical calculations are agreed with the experimental results obtained for 2000–2014 under different assumptions about the mean free path of cosmic rays in the corresponding period of HSS’s.  相似文献

A diffusion model for the propagation of relativistic nuclear cosmic rays in the Galaxy is developed. The model has two nonstandard features: The escape of cosmic-ray particles from the Galaxy is simulated by a term in the diffusion equations, rather than the imposition of boundary conditions on the diffusion solution at the surface of the confinement region. And an age-dependent, locally-averaged effective gas distribution is employed in the diffusion equations. The model simulates free-particle outflow at the Galactic boundary. The model is fit to chemical composition data in the 0.3–5 GeV per nucleon range. It is then consistent with the large-scale Galactic -ray data, radio halo data, energy constraints on the assumed supernova sources, and, when extended to very high energies, cosmic-ray anisotrophy data. From the fit we conclude that the cosmic rays are confined in a large flattened or quasis-pherical halo with a scale height in the range 3–6 kpc and an average Galactic escape time of 108 yr.  相似文献

A simple model of cosmic ray propagation is proposed from which the major experimental results can be derived: The model reproduces the observed nuclear abundances and accounts for the observed changes of nuclear composition with energy, the high degree of isotropy of cosmic ray flux at all energies, and the high degree of its constancy throughout the history of the Solar System. It is consistent with the observed size distribution of extensive airshowers, the intensity and energy distribution of the electron component, and the diffuse emission of γ-rays and radio waves. The model is characterized by the two basic assumptions: (1) that cosmic rays have been injected at an unchanging rate by sources located in the galactic spiral arms and (2) that a large-scale magnetic field retains all particles in our galaxy, where they interact with interstellar gas, so that all complex nuclei are finally fragmented and their energy dissipated in meson production and electro-magnetic interactions.  相似文献

We consider effects on an (ultra)relativistic jet and its ambient medium caused by high-energy cosmic rays accelerated at the jet side boundary. As illustrated by simple models, during the acceleration process a flat cosmic ray distribution can be created, with gyro-radii for the highest particle energies reaching scales comparable to the jet radius or energy density comparable to the pressure of the ambient medium . In the case of efficient radiative losses, a high-energy bump in the spectrum can dominate the cosmic ray pressure. In extreme cases, the cosmic rays are able to push the ambient medium off, providing a 'cosmic ray cocoon' separating the jet from the surrounding medium. The considered cosmic rays provide an additional jet braking force and lead to a number of consequences for the jet structure and its radiative output. In particular, the dynamic and acceleration time-scales involved are in the range observed in variable active galactic nuclei.  相似文献

We have obtained a simple representation to the observed invariant cross-section for the production of neutral pions in proton-proton collisions. Making use of this representation, we have calculated the differential and integral production spectra of gamma rays in the Galaxy from interactions of cosmic ray nuclei with interstellar gas. It is shown that the uncertainties in deducing interstellar proton spectrum by demodulating the observed spectrum do not affect very much the gamma ray spectrum. We have also determined the gamma ray production spectrum through bremsstrahlung process for a typical interstellar electron spectrum derived from the radio spectrum in the Galaxy. From these, the total gamma ray production spectrum resulting from the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar matter is compared with the observed gamma ray spectrum in the Galaxy and some inferences have been obtained. We also point out the possible uncertainty in the present calculation and suggest the improvements needed.  相似文献

Abstract— The new B solar-system abundance calculated by Zhai and Shaw (1994), 16.9 atoms/106 Si (or 606 atoms/1012 H) is used to reevaluate the different possibilities of LiBeB (except 7Li) nucleosynthesis. The revised abundances support two models: (1) Light elements were formed by continual bombardment of interstellar medium (ISM) by galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), but these galactic cosmic rays should contain a very intense low-energy component, in the form of E?5 which cannot be observed near the Earth due to solar modulation effects; (2) Light elements are a mixture of two sources. In the first source, light elements were synthesized by continual bombardment of interstellar medium by galactic cosmic rays. In the second source, they were made by the interactions of C and O nuclei ejected from supernovae with the H and He in the surrounding gas. The first source constitutes ~46% of total B. The Si-normalized and CI-meteorite-normalized abundances of common and volatile elements in carbonaceous chondrites show a linear correlation with their condensation temperatures. Using this relationship and the normalized B abundances in CM, CO, and CV meteorites, we can estimate the B condensation temperature to be ~910 K, which is similar to Ga.  相似文献
