In this article I discuss methods and issues of interferometric data processing, i.e. how to compute visibilities from interferograms, correct for systematic errors, and calibrate the data. I conclude with some remarks on interferometric imaging, as it can be considered part of data processing, one step before the analysis using physical models of the target observed.  相似文献

The significance of tidal interactions in the evolution of the faint radio population (sub-mJy) is studied using a deep and homogeneous radio survey (1.4 GHz), covering an area of 3.14 deg2 and complete to a flux density of 0.4 mJy. Optical photometric and spectroscopic data are also available for this sample. A statistical approach is employed to identify candidate physical associations between radio sources and optically selected 'field' galaxies. We find an excess of close pairs around optically identified faint radio sources, albeit at a low significance level, implying that the pairing fraction of the sub-mJy radio sources is similar to that of 'field' galaxies (at the same magnitude limit) but higher than that of local galaxies.  相似文献

Wide-field radio interferometric images often contain a large population of faint compact sources. Due to their low intensity/noise ratio, these objects can be easily missed by automated detection methods, which have been classically based on thresholding techniques after local noise estimation. The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the performance of several alternative or complementary techniques to thresholding. We compare three different algorithms to increase the detection rate of faint objects. The first technique consists of combining wavelet decomposition with local thresholding. The second technique is based on the structural behaviour of the neighbourhood of each pixel. Finally, the third algorithm uses local features extracted from a bank of filters and a boosting classifier to perform the detections. The methods’ performances are evaluated using simulations and radio mosaics from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We show that the new methods perform better than well-known state of the art methods such as SExtractor, SAD and DUCHAMP at detecting faint sources of radio interferometric images.  相似文献

The radio frequency emission at 10.7 cm (or 2800 MHz) wavelength (considered as solar flux density) out of different possible wavelengths is usually selected to identify periodicities because of its high correlation with solar extreme ultraviolet radiation as well as its complete and long observational record other than sunspot related indices. The solar radio flux at 10.7 cm wavelength plays a very valuable role for forecasting the space weather because it is originated from lower corona and chromospheres region of the Sun. Also, solar radio flux is a magnificent indicator of major solar activity. Here in the present work the solar radio flux data from 1965 to 2014 observed at the Domimion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Penticton, British Columbiahas been processed using Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT) to identify predominant periods within the data along with their confidence levels. Also, the multi-taper method (MTM) for periodicity analysis is used to validate the observed periods. Present investigation exhibits multiperiodicity of the time series F10.7 solar radio flux data around 27, 57, 78, 127, 157, 4096 days etc. The observed periods are also compared with the periods of MgII Index data using same algorithm as MgII Index data has 99.9% correlation with F10.7 Solar Radio Flux data. It can be observed that the MgII index data exhibits similar periodicities with very high confidence levels.Present investigation also clearly indicates that the computed results are very much confining with the results obtained in different communication for the similar data of 10.7 cm Solar Radio Flux as well as for the other solar activities.

The 10.7cm solar radio flux (F10.7), the value of the solar radio emission flux density at a wavelength of 10.7cm, is a useful index of solar activity as a proxy for solar extreme ultraviolet radiation. It is meaningful and important to predict F10.7 values accurately for both long-term (months-years) and short-term (days) forecasting, which are often used as inputs in space weather models. This study applies a novel neural network technique, support vector regression (SVR), to forecasting daily values of F10.7. The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of SVR in short-term F10.7 forecasting. The approach, based on SVR, reduces the dimension of feature space in the training process by using a kernel-based learning algorithm. Thus, the complexity of the calculation becomes lower and a small amount of training data will be sufficient. The time series of F10.7 from 2002 to 2006 are employed as the data sets. The performance of the approach is estimated by calculating the norm mean square error and mean absolute percentage error. It is shown that our approach can perform well by using fewer training data points than the traditional neural network.  相似文献

The MRT survey will be by far one of the most extensive survey at low frequencies. This survey will provide a moderately deep radio catalog reaching a source density of about 2 × 104 sr-1over the southern sky with an angular resolution of 4' × 4' and a limiting flux density of 70 mJy (1 σ) at 151 MHz. The availability of zero spacing and short baselines in the MRT array will make it sensitive to the background temperature and to large scale features in the sky. In addition to this feature, the low frequency operation makes a study of continuum emission from large radio sources by MRT to have several interesting and important implications in the study of radio galaxies. This paper discusses the parameter space of radio galaxies which can be explored using the MRT. Images of a few extended radio galaxies are also presented. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present an interferometric technique for the reconstruction of ultra-wide band impulsive signals from point sources. This highly sensitive method was developed for the search for ultra-high energy neutrinos with the ANITA experiment but is fully generalizable to any antenna array detecting radio impulsive events. Applications of the interferometric method include event reconstruction, thermal noise and anthropogenic background rejection, and solar imaging for calibrations. We illustrate this technique with applications from the analysis of the ANITA-I and ANITA-II data in the 200–1200 MHz band.  相似文献

Until recently, most of the information on particle acceleration processes in solar flares has been obtained from hard X-ray and cm-microwave observations. As a rule they provide information on electrons with energies below 300 keV. During recent years it became possible to measure the gamma-ray and millimeter radio emission with improved sensitivities. These spectral ranges carry information on much higher energy electrons. We studied the temporal and spectral behaviour of the radio burst emission at centimeter-millimeter wavelengths (8–50 GHz) by using the data from the patrol instruments of IAP (Bern University). We have analyzed more than 20 impulsive and long duration radio bursts (of 10 s to several 100 s duration). The main finding of the data analysis is the presence of spectral flattening throughout the bursts, which occurs always during the decay phase of flux peaks, at frequencies well above the spectral peak frequency and independently of burst duration. Furthermore, for some of the bursts, the flux maxima at higher frequencies are delayed. These findings can serve as evidence of the hardening of the electron spectrum at energies above some hundreds of keV during the decay phase of cm–mm flux peaks. As a most likely reason for such a hardening we consider Coulomb collisions of energetic electrons continuously injected and trapped in a flaring loop.  相似文献

We investigate accelerated electron energy spectra for different sources in a large flare using simultaneous observations obtained with two instruments, the Nobeyama Radio Heliograph (NoRH) at 17 and 34 GHz, and the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) at hard X-rays. This flare is one of the few in which emission up to energies exceeding 200 keV can be imaged in hard X-rays. Furthermore, we can investigate the spectra of individual sources up to this energy. We discuss and compare the HXR and microwave spectra and morphology. Although the event overall appears to correspond to the standard scenario with magnetic reconnection under an eruptive filament, several of its features do not seem to be consistent with popular flare models. In particular we find that (1) microwave emissions might be optically thick at high frequencies despite a low peak frequency in the total flux radio spectrum, presumably due to the inhomogeneity of the emitting source; (2) magnetic fields in high-frequency radio sources might be stronger than sometimes assumed; (3) sources spread over a very large volume can show matching evolution in their hard X-ray spectra that may provide a challenge to acceleration models. Our results emphasize the importance of studies of sunspot-associated flares and total flux measurements of radio bursts in the millimeter range.  相似文献

We present new 6.0 and 21.1 cm interferometric observations of Venus. When combined with our previous 3.12 cm work they provide s self-consistent set of high-resolution observations at three wavelengths covering a range in which the opacity of the Venus atmosphere varies by a factor of 50. Model calculations indicate that a model atmosphere of CO2 in adiabatic equilibrium containing uniformly mixed gaseous absorbers surrounding a dielectric sphere cannot simultaneously and adequately predict the radio interferometric measurements at all wavelengths together with the radar and radio occultation measurements.  相似文献

Calibrated data for 65 flat-spectrum extragalactic radio sources are presented at a wavelength of 850 μm, covering a three-year period from 1997 April. The data, obtained from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope using the SCUBA camera in pointing mode, were analysed using an automated pipeline process based on the Observatory Reduction and Acquisition Control–Data Reduction ( orac–dr ) system. This paper describes the techniques used to analyse and calibrate the data, and presents the data base of results along with a representative sample of the better-sampled light curves.  相似文献

The knowledge of receiver beam shapes is essential for accurate radio interferometric imaging. Traditionally, this information is obtained by holographic techniques or by numerical simulation. However, such methods are not feasible for an observation with time varying beams, such as the beams produced by a phased array radio interferometer. We propose the use of the observed data itself for the estimation of the beam shapes. We use the directional gains obtained along multiple sources across the sky for the construction of a time varying beam model. The construction of this model is an ill posed non linear optimization problem. Therefore, we propose to use Riemannian optimization, where we consider the constraints imposed as a manifold. We compare the performance of the proposed approach with traditional unconstrained optimization and give results to show the superiority of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Previous work by Motch et al. [1985, Space Sci. Rev. 40, 219] suggested that in the low/hard state of GX, the soft X-ray power-law extrapolated backward in energy agrees with the IR flux level. Corbel and Fender [2002, ApJ 573, L35–L39] later showed that the typical hard state radio power-law extrapolated forward in energy meets the backward extrapolated X-ray power-law at an IR spectral break, which was explicitly observed twice in GX. This has been cited as further evidence that jet synchrotron radiation might make a significant contribution to the observed X-rays in the hard state. We explore this hypothesis with a series of simultaneous radio/X-ray hard state observations of GX. We fit these spectra with a simple, but remarkably successful, doubly broken power-law model that indeed requires a spectral break in the IR. For most of these observations, the break position as a function of X-ray flux agrees with the jet model predictions. We then examine the radio flux/X-ray flux correlation in CYG through the use of 15 GHz radio data, obtained with the Ryle radio telescope, and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data, from the All Sky Monitor and pointed observations. We find evidence of ‘parallel tracks’ in the radio/X-ray correlation which are associated with ‘failed transitions’ to, or the beginning of a transition to, the soft state. We also find that for CYG the radio flux is more fundamentally correlated with the hard, rather than the soft, X-ray flux.

We present the results of a pilot study in which we obtained Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) L-band snapshot images of the 20 strongest radio sources from a sample of 123 radio objects that exhibit significant flux density variations at 1.4 GHz on a seven year base-line. The sample was created using FIRST VLA B-array data from 1995 and 2002 on a strip around zero declination near the south Galactic cap. The primary purpose is to assess the presence of radio jets and provide direct evidence between long-term variability and jet structures, as several models suggest. The radio structure of all the sources in this subsample appears very compact and our high resolution MERLIN observations reveal for the first time the presence of small milli-arcsecond (mas) jets and/or jet-like extensions in 17 of the 20 variable sources (literature data show core-jet structures or hints of extended structure in the other three objects which are point sources in our MERLIN observations). In the future we will use the radio results from the complete study, in combination with their optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, in order to investigate trends and possible differences or similarities between the quasars and galaxies that host these radio sources, and so examine existing unification schemes or open up new aspects in AGN unification.  相似文献

We present radio interferometric observations of the Algol-type binary system RZ Cassiopeiae made with the VLA and MERLIN arrays at 6 cm over an incomplete orbital cycle of the system (1.195 d). We detected RZ Cas with both instruments. The images were unresolved in both cases, with angular extents comparable to the synthesized beams. The peak flux density in the VLA image was 1.14 mJy beam−1 and in the MERLIN image it was 0.93 mJy beam−1. The derived brightness temperatures are  4.02 × 108  and  4.35 × 108 K  and the effective electron energies are 0.347 and 0.346 MeV for the MERLIN and VLA data respectively. The radio light curve shows an interesting modulation centred close to the primary eclipse which seems to correlate with ASCA SIS observations of the system. The results can be interpreted as an emitting region on the outer hemisphere of the cool component aligned along the centroid axis of the binary system.  相似文献

A new sample of extra-Galactic radio sources having a peak in the continuous spectrum near 1 GHz has been compiled, using data available in the literature on their radio flux densities, and some characteristic parameters of radio sources in this sample have been calculated. The median value of the calculated spectral indices of radio sources in the sample is -0.95, the median flux density at the peak (Sm) is 465 mJy, and almost half the radio sources (14 out of 30) have ultrasteep spectra, for which the spectral indices in the high-frequency range are α <-1.0 (S ∝ vα). This paper proposes an active sub-reflector suitable for large radio telescopes, which can compensate both of the deformation of the main reflector and sub-reflector position offsets. The mathematical formula of the main reflector deformation compensated by the sub-reflector is deduced based on Cassegrain and Gregory antenna structures. The position of the sub-reflector is adjustable to compensate for defocusing errors on high and low elevations, which are mainly caused by the deformation of the sub-reflector supporting legs. In this paper, the method of obtaining the optimum position of the sub-reflector from the aperture phase by the interferometric method is introduced. The actual measurement is verified on the Tianma 65 m radio telescope, which provides a new way to diagnose the position error of the sub-reflector.  相似文献

We present 2.7-mm interferometric observations of Saturn made near opposition in June 1984 and June 1985, when the ring opening angle was 19° and 23°, respectively. By combining the data sets we produce brightness maps of Saturn and its rings with a resolution of 6″. The maps show flux from the ring ansae, and are the first direct evidence of ring flux in the 3-mm wavelength region. Modelfits to the visibility data yield a disk brightness temperature of 156 ± 5°K, a combined A, B, and C ring brightness temperature of 19 ± 3°K, and a combined a ring cusp (region of the rings which block the planet's disk) brightness temperature of 85 ± 5°K. These results imply a normal-to-the-ring optical depth for the combined ABC ringof 0.31 ± 0.04, which is nearly the same value found for wavelenghts from the UV to 6 cm. About 6°K of the ring flux is attributed to scattered planetary emission, leaving an intrinsic thermal component of ∼13°K. These results, together with the ring particle size distributions found by the Voyager radio occultation experiments, are consistent with the idea that the ring particles are composed chiefly of water ice.  相似文献
