The New EC Framework Water Directive: Assessment of the Chemical and Ecological Status of Surface Waters The main objective of the draft EC Framework Water Directive is the good quality of all surface waters. The directive provides for an assessment of the chemical status of surface waters (EU‐wide valid environmental quality standards for approximately 30 priority substances) and a five‐stage ecological classification of waters, comprising the stages high, good, moderate, poor, and bad. The starting point for the assessment are the reference conditions, which are defined as corresponding to high water quality and characterising a water status with no significant anthropogenic impact. The reference sites in the various water body types are to be selected using hydromorphological and physico‐chemical parameters and subsequently characterised by means of biological parameters. For surface waters, three groups of characteristics are provided for, namely: 1. with priority the biology – in the case of surface waters – with the four elements phytoplankton, macrophytes/phytobenthos, benthic invertebrate fauna, and fish fauna; 2. supporting the hydromorphology, e.g. flowing waters with the three elements hydrological regime, river continuity, and morphological conditions and 3. supporting the physico‐chemical conditions with the three elements general conditions, specific synthetic pollutants, and specific non synthetic pollutants (other than the priority substances of the chemical status).  相似文献

Reduction of the Concentration of Bacteria and Coliphages along the Flowing Stretch of a Treated Sewage Channel The efficiency of surface waters to eliminate E. coli, fecal streptococci, Salmonella spp., and coliphages was evaluated in a small river which receives treated wastewater and which is rich in submerged macrophytes. The study took place between April and December, 1994. Total colony count, BOD5, O2 concentration and water temperature were determined in the river as well. As the river does not receive additional water downwards along its 17.2 km course, dilution effects could be ruled out as the cause for the elimination of the microorganisms. The reduction is assumed to happen rather due to sedimentation, grazing, and adsorption to the submerged waterplants. Immediately after discharge of the wastewater, the river water contained about 105 cfu/100 mL E. coli and 104 cfu/100 mL fecal streptococci, about 1000 pfu/100 mL coliphages, and, as a rule, was positive for salmonella in 10 mL. The reduction of E. coli, fecal streptococci, salmonella, clostridia, and coliphages at the end of the course was 1 to 2 orders of magnitude. This reduction took place mainly within the first 4.7 km, a part in which, due to low flowing velocities, suspended solids settle down efficiently. Besides, at the end of this part the submerged waterplants are especially abundant. The reduction of suspended solids correlated positively with that of BOD5, bacteria, and coliphages. The reduction of microorganisms was not sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the European Community guidelines for bathing waters and for surface waters used as drinking water source. The regenerating capacity of surface waters is not sufficient to eliminate pathogens from convenionally treated wastewater. Therefore, tertiary treatment is necessary to keep receiving waters reasonably free from pathogens.  相似文献

Bacterial growth measurements in treated waters from different origins. Measuring growth curves of bacteria in a drinking water gives information on the regrowth potential of the water in the pipe system. The method which was developed by Werner was used for analyzing drinking waters from different origins. As a negative control high purity water and as positive control acetate were used. It is proposed to use acetate-C-equivalents for quantification because the biodegradable part of total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is mostly below 0,1 mg/1 in treated waters. The analyses of treated surface waters showed results from 40–80 μg/1 acetate-C-equivalents, whereas in treated waters from ground water and bankfiltrates the concentration of easily biodegradable organic carbon was between 10 and 20 μg/1 acetate-C-equivalents. This is in the region of high purity water, where in average 9 μg/1 acetate-C-equivalents are detected, which therefore is the detection limit of the method. These waters normally do not show any regrowth problems.  相似文献

To protect a water for the purpose of local recreation – inclusive of bathing – the effluent of an upstream clarification plant was chlorinated. Due to poorly controlled dosing, residual chlorine quantities exceeding the permissible level entered the receiving stream, its biocenosis having been considerably endangered. Detrimental effects on the chemical composition are graphically represented by the measured results for some waters – partly criteria of quality. There is explained that the self-purification capacity of the water decreased by about 30 % and that the hydrobiological species composition of periphyton was reduced by about 80 %. Finally, advice is given concerning the prevention of such damages to waters.  相似文献

Four fluorotensides which are used mainly industrially are investigated with respect to their removability from waters. Since, in general, fluorotensides are difficult to remove or not at all removable biochemically, the effects of chemical or physicochemical treatment processes are tested. As the results represented in pictures and tables show, different modes of behaviour can be recognized with respect to the respective purification effect for the investigated fluorotensides, partly among them. Flocculation with Al- and Fe-salts as well as chlorination and ozonization show only partial effects. But all the investigated fluorotensides can be adsorptively eliminated by means of powder or granular active charcoal and adsorbent resin Wofatit EA60.  相似文献

On the basis of investigations into periphyton for three years as well as selected physical and chemical criteria of water quality at eight stations with different wastewater load there were classified initially 52 algal taxa with respect to their saprobic indicative values: 4 oligoto β-mesosaprobic, 23 β-mesosaprobic, 19 β- to α-mesosaprobic, 6 α-mesosaprobic. Their distribution and ecological demands are shortly discussed. The degree of saprobity, expressed as the index of saprobity according to PANTLE and BUCK proves to be very suitable for the documentation of ecological changes at wastewater inlet points and their environment. Finally, proposals for an ecological classification of coastal waters by their trophic state and anthropogenic load are derived from the results of investigation by analogy with the corresponding classification of stagnant inland waters.  相似文献

After an explanation of the complex composition of the system of humic substances, some gravel deposits are described from whose open-pit boundaries there were taken water samples, their content of components of humic matter having been determined. Since spectroscopic analysis techniques yield spectra which are difficult to analyse and have a relatively low detection sensitivity, an indirect polarographic method was applied by which water-soluble humic substances can be determined very selectively down to a lower limit of 5 μg/1. Thus, enrichment in water or in adsorbing columns is not required. From the results found there are derived several statements concerning the occurrence of humic substances and fulvic acids in waters and conclusions about the possible influence on the hardening of concrete are given.  相似文献

The CO2 content, air saturation and calcite equilibrium of the River Ilm and some of its tributaries were analysed. CO2 content was measured by degasing the CO2 from water. The CO2 level is a very sensitive indicator for a low pollution in oxygen saturated waters. Clean running waters have a CO2 content close to the air saturation of 0.1–0.3 mg C l−1. Ground water and springs are rich in CO2. Polluted waters are characterised by higher CO2 contents, also organic pollution can result in high values of CO2. Carbon dioxide concentration of streams and brooks is limited by re-aeration.

The headwater region (softwater) of the River Ilm is unsaturated, the hard water in the middle- and underflow is oversaturated. In summer and autumn high saturation could be found, but without autochthonous calcite precipitation like in hard water lakes.  相似文献

Organohalogen compounds are gaining in importance in the control of surface and drinking water due to their unwholesome properties. An accumulation of the organohalogen compounds, occurring mostly at low concentrations, is possible in different ways. The author discusses the possibility and problems of the extractability from waters with the aid of organic solvents. The group parameter EOX that can be determined does not allow any statement concerning components of individual substances, but gives some clues to the state of surface and drinking waters which are mostly anthropogenically polluted. Results of practical examples as well as theoretical considerations indicate the importance of the different distribution coefficients in the solvent/water extraction system. The degree of extraction can be considerably increased by the application of suitable mixtures of solvents. In waters with a known composition, the probably detectable EOX-quantity can be calculated by means of theoretical degrees of extraction.  相似文献

A Specord M 40 device with the Date Handling 1 computer cassette was used for the derivative-spectroscopie determination of lignosulphonic acid. Because of the higher sensitivity and the better evaluable peaks, the 2nd derivation of the five possible derivations was used. The analysis method described in detail was tested with test substances on a surface water which was polluted with waste-products from the pulp industry. With the stated device parameters, the lignosulphonic acid up to 2 mg/l can be determined in the presence of humic acids and chlorolignosulphonic acids. In weakly polluted waters, as groundwaters and shore filtrates. still lignosulphonic acid concentrations of 0.1 mg/l can be detected after an adequate enrichment.  相似文献

Recently the method of flotation is used as a simple step within a number of procedures of chemical analysis for enrichment of waters or industrial lyes to be investigated by ions. By the example of tin analysis all the possible variants are compared with regard to their efficiency. The advantages result from the using conventional methods of chemical analysis in connection with coprecipitation of traces and their flotation at trace levels of ng/ml. The flotation is a fast method of enrichment, it is easily to handle and sufficiently exact. As a proof example the chemical analysis of Sn, Au and Ag is described.  相似文献

Wastewater with high ammonia concentrations is produced by many industries, e.g. in the production of fertilizer and explosives and in the agricultural and food industry. A direct discharge into rivers and lakes has to be avoided: Oxidation of ammonia requires 4.56 g DO/g NH+4-N and results in a decrease of dissolved oxygen concentration. Moreover, nitrate stimulates the proliferation of algae, with regard to the eutrophication of natural waters. For municipal wastewater with an ammonia concentration less than 50 mg/L NH+4-N nitrification is a standard process. However, the removal of higher loaded industrial effluents still poses many questions. Recently, lab-scale and pilot-scale investigations show remarkable advances in the increase in nitrification efficiency and in the stabilization of the process. But because of changing flowrates and concentrations, the aid of advanced control algorithms is necessary. Some of the most important variables of biochemical reactors can be determined only with difficulty, at times only with off-line measurements. Model-aided measurement approaches try to determine these variables indirectly from easily measured variables. An experimentally-proved reactor model is required. Therefore, a dynamic model of nitrification in ideally mixed reactors is proposed based on mass balances for the components ammonia. nitrite, nitrate. dissolved oxygen DO, carbon dioxide, pH. nitrosomonas and nitrobacter. The biological reaction rates consider oxygen limitation and substrate inhibition. The process model presented is tested by lab scale experiments using an aerated stirred tank reactor and a fluidized bed reactor. Conformity between the predictions of the model and the observed data was positive. It has been shown that the nitrite oxidation by nitrobacter is the most sensible step in nitrification.  相似文献

In the last few years ecological evaluation of lowland freshwaters was controversely discussed. Due to the fact that most basic information of assessment systems derived from upland streams, the results could not be applied to the lowland situations. Additionally, it is not sufficient for an integral freshwater evaluation only to focus on the stream to show degradation in the tight coupling of running waters and their adjacent landscape. In this study we critically tested a new method, the Standorttypie-Index (STI), to assess lowland streams using caddis-fly communities.

During 1994 and 1996 we investigated the caddisfly community at 15 sampling sites of a river system in the “Westfälische Tieflandbucht” (Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany). As a result we found 72 species belonging to 16 families of the order Trichoptera. The calculation of the “Standorttypie-Index” is based on four defined ecological categories. Although the definitions were inaccurate, each species was classified into one category. In view of stream regulation and streamwidth, we calculated for all study sites the STI of the immature stages, the adults and a combined total STI.

Although there is a correlation between the “Standorttypie-Index” and the state of degradation of the study sites, the separate analysis of larval and adult communities showed that the results easily lead to misinterpretation. The STI of adults devalues the combined total STI of regulated as well as natural study sites. As a consequence, until now it is not possible to evaluate the state of degradation in the coupling of the stream and the adjacent landscape using the STI of the caddis-fly community.  相似文献

In laboratory investigations with model waters, the behaviour of selected cation-exchange resins (Amberlite 200 C, Duolite C-25, Lewatit S-100, Wofatit KPS and Wofatit KS-10) is tested. The usable volume capacity of the resins in the forms of H, Na and NH4 as well as the water content and the total volume capacity after 25 cycles of loading/regeneration are determined. It is recommended to use Amberlite 200 C and Wofatit KS-10.  相似文献

By a comparison of methods of the nitrate determination in groundwater the correctness of the values of more than 10 mg/1 nitrate determined with a Nitratsensitrode (VEB Kombinat Keramische Werke Hermsdorf) is proved. In this range of concentrations, the rate of retrieval and the coefficient of variation are about 99.6 % and 2.5 %, respectively. Measured values from samples with less than 10 mg/1 nitrate have a larger error and are recorded as too high.  相似文献

Attenuation of Heavy Metals and Sulfate by Aluminium Precipitates in Acid Mine Drainage During the mixing of acid mine waters with nearly neutral tributaries, often precipitates are formed which are high in iron or aluminium. These precipitates cover the river bed for many kilometres. Near the town of Lehesten (Thuringian slate mining area), leachates of slate quarries and waste rock dumps contain high amounts of aluminium, sulfate, copper, nickel, zinc, manganese, and H+ ions as a result of the oxidation of incorporated pyrite. These leachates enter the brooks Loquitz, Kleine Sormitz, and Rehbach leading to the phenomenon named above. The contribution of the forming aluminium‐rich precipitates on the attenuation of sulfate and heavy metals by sorption or coprecipitation was studied by analysing the composition of water and sediment samples as well as samples of suspended matter. Sulfate is often considered as conservative tracer in acid mine drainage. However, sulfate does not behave conservatively in this system what might be explained by the adsorption of sulfate to the aluminium precipitates. Instead, conservative behaviour was found for calcium, potassium, chloride, zinc, manganese, and nickel. A formation of jurbanite can be excluded because of the low sulfate contents. The sulfate content of the sediment depends on the pH. At low pH values (4.8) the S/Al ratio corresponds to the theoretical ratio in basaluminite and decreases with rising pH. Sulfate is weakly bound to the solid phase and can easily be replaced by OH ions. A formation of basaluminite is possible at low pH values with a fluent transition to aluminium hydroxide. Therefore the precipitates are assumed to consist predominantly of aluminium hydroxide with sulfate being adsorbed to the surface.  相似文献

水质是流域生态系统的重要指标,水质评价则是开展流域水体污染防治等工作的基础.基于2010-2014年羊卓雍错流域湖泊、河流水质及2012-2014年流域居民饮用井水、自来水水质监测资料,结合单因子污染评价法和内梅罗污染指数法,对流域水质现状进行分析和评价.结果表明,12处地表水体中,羊卓雍错和巴纠错受中度污染,其他水体清洁或尚清洁,硒及氟化物为主要污染因子;9处居民饮用水体中,自来水水质明显好于井水,但也仅有3处自来水达清洁标准,硒、铝及硝酸盐为主要超标项.污染因子通过水-土-植被-动物系统破坏流域生态环境、阻碍农业生产发展,并直接或间接影响人类身体健康.因此,必须做好流域环境的综合整治、控制农业面源污染、完善饮用水基础设施建设,同时继续加强水质监测.  相似文献

Summary: The application of the UV derivative spectroscopy method to determine aniline and phenol in spiked waste water samples was investigated. Two statistical procedures (modified t-tests) were used to evaluate constant and percentage systematic errors of the method presented. On our conditions, i.e. type of samples, the aniline determination by the 2nd and 4th derivatives was predominantly disturbed but in contrary the phenol concentrations of all samples determined by the 4th and 5th derivatives show no significant bias. The influence of substituted phenols was examined by factor experiments (Plackett-Burman-plan). Generally the higher derivative order brings the better resolving power and in part then the interference is eliminated (p-cresol, hydroquinone).  相似文献

Quality Requirements for Fresh Waters: Water Quality Targets, Water Quality Objectives, and Chemical Water Quality Classification In the Federal Republic of Germany, water quality requirements for the protection of inland surface waters against hazardous substances are formulated on the basis of a quality targets derivation concept developed jointly by the Federal Government and the Federal States. The quality requirements were termed “water quality targets” in order to make it clear that the values derived are orientational values rather than legally binding limit values. The international comparison of quality requirements for surface waters shows that, on the whole, the national quality targets ensure a high level of protection. According to present scientific knowledge, impairments of uses, such as supply of drinking water, or risks to aquatic communities need not to be expected if the quality targets are complied with. A comparison of water quality data with the water quality targets makes it possible, on the one hand, to identify those substances whose inputs must be further reduced; on the other hand, it also shows that, for a number of substances, there is no need at present for concern over their adversely water quality. A further differentiation of the aquatic hazard potential of pollutants allows a water quality classification system to be developed on the basis of the quality targets derivation concept. The basic elements of this water quality classification system are presented, and its application is explained by way of examples.  相似文献

A New Electrochemical Method for the Determination of Bromide in Natural Waters Formation of poorly soluble Hg(I)-halides at the polarized mercury electrode was used for the development of a new electrochemical method for determination of bromide in mixed chloride and bromide solutions. Interferences due to anions, surface-active agents, and suspended matter present in natural waters were not found. The applicability of the method to natural waters was tested in the Krka River estuary in Croatia. The mass ratio Br/chlorinity = 3.320·10?3 was calculated on the basis of recorded bromide concentrations in the estuary. As the relationship is linear, conservative behaviour of bromide ions in the Krka River estuary may be assumed.  相似文献
