Summary. Large, well-characterized single-crystals of titanomagnetite of approximate composition Fe2.4Ti0.6O4 were ground into spheres and orientated along specific crystallographic axes. The field dependences of the thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) and the temperature dependences of the magnetic hysteresis properties were measured and evaluated against the available theoretical models. The models, of necessity simplifications of real materials, were unable to account for many features of the experimental curves. The discrepancies were partly resolved by consideration of the mode of blocking of each individual coercivity fraction. It was deduced that the domain-walls were pinned by both dislocation lines and by inclusions or voids. A fraction of the walls were not thermally blocked. They could however be thought of as being blocked isothermally as the applied field was relaxed. The proportion of remanence blocked in by each process was found to be dependent on the strength of the inducing field through the field dependence of the blocking temperatures. A simplified model, taking these effects into account, was developed. This predicts the main features of the TRM acquisition curve and of the alternating field and thermal demagnetization spectra.  相似文献

Summary A comparison is made of synthetic and natural magnetites after oxidation and reduction. During these reactions new spinel phases are formed from basaltic magnetites which fall outside the composition diagram FeO-Fe2O3-TiO2. They are solid solutions of MgFe2O4, MnFe2O4, FeAl2O4 and FeFe2O4 depending on the minor components of natural magnetites like MgO, MnO, Al2O3. A irascibility gap makes the situation more complicated.  相似文献

The intensity of rotational remanent magnetization (RRM) acquired by single-domain greigite at a rotation frequency of 5 rps was combined with measurements of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) to calculate the effective biasing field ( Bg ) that produced the RRM. Samples of single-domain greigite had Bg values between -137 and -84 μT, and a MDFRRM of c. 80 mT. By contrast, a suite of natural and synthetic ferrimagnetic iron oxide samples, including single-domain magnetite and y Fe3O4 tape particles, acquired Bg values between -3 and -14 μT, and MDFRRM ranged between 43 and 68 mT (when RRM was acquired). Multidomain magnetite did not acquire a RRM. Bg values at 5 rps were calculated from previously published data for magnetite particles of different grain sizes, which revealed a minimum Bg value of -24 μT and a MDFRRM of 57 mT for the finest fraction (0.2-0.8 μm in diameter). In a geological example, measurements of Bg and MDFRRM were used to detect the presence of greigite in a 4 m long Late Weichselian sediment core. Variations in inclination, declination and the intensity of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) correlate with changes in magnetic mineralogy.  相似文献

TRM deviations in anisotropic assemblages of multidomain magnetite   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Anisotropic assemblages of multidomain magnetite particles develop an anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), which in turn induces deviations of thermo-remanent magnetization (TRM) from the field direction. From the theories of multidomain TRM acquisition, it is shown that the TRM anisotropy tensor has its eigenvalue ratios ( T i) related to the principal weak-field susceptibility ratios ( P i) by the order of magnitude T i≃ P 2i. This relation has been experimentally verified on two sets of highly anisotropic rock samples. The exponent has been determined to be 1.94 in the samples from a Peruvian gabbro, and 1.81 in those from the granite of Flamanville (NW France). Accounting for experimental difficulties in determining the TRM anisotropy tensors, these exponents are judged to agree well with the expected one. It is therefore stressed that AMS measurements provide a good means of evaluating the magnetic field direction from deviated TRM directions, providing magnetic carriers are mainly multidomain magnetites.  相似文献

Summary. The potential function ø for a magnetic body of susceptibility μ in a medium of susceptibility μ* satisfies the integral equation
Here Φ* is the potential function for the region without the heterogeneity and R is the distance from the point of observation to the point on the surface, s , of the body. δΦ /δn is the normal derivative, in the direction of the outward normal. The equation allows for the effects of demagnetization. For numerical purposes the surfaces can be divided into N facets over which δΦ/δ n is a constant. The unknown quantities δΦ/δnj can be found from the system of equations defined by:
The prime on the summation sign denotes that the summation does not include the i th element. The magnetic field in the direction of the unit vector P( P 1, P 2, P3 ) is given by:   相似文献

Summary. A new asymptotic formula is obtained for the spectrum of an isolated normal mode multiplet nSl or nTl , with n ≪ l , on a laterally heterogeneous Earth. The principal feature of this formula is that it is uniformly valid on the Earth's surface, including near the epicentre and its antipode. The formal conditions for its validity are that | δm / m 0|≪ 1 and s max≪ l ≪ s min| δm / m 0|–1, where | δm / m 0| is the relative magnitude of the lateral heterogeneity, and s min and s max are the minimum and maximum significant degrees in its spherical harmonic expansion. As well as providing a basis for the geographical interpretation of near-epicentral or near-antipodal long-period recordings, the new formula also unifies the asymptotic theory and adds insight into the phenomena which govern the details of multiplet spectra in general.  相似文献

Summary. After thermal and alternating field (AF) cleaning, the characteristic high blocking temperature A component of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of the Tudor gabbro of southern Ontario has a mean direction D = 326°, I =–46° ( k = 132, α95= 4.8°, N = 8 sites). The corresponding palaeopole, 133°E, 12°N ( dp = 4°, dm = 6°), confirms the palaeopole 137°E, 17°N (α95= 8.4°) reported earlier by Palmer & Carmichael, based on AF cleaning only. The A NRM has unblocking temperatures > 515–525°C which exceed the estimated 500°C peak temperature reached locally during ∼ 1050 Ma Grenvillian regional metamorphism. The A NRM therefore predates metamorphism and is probably a primary thermoremanence (TRM). The age of the Tudor NRM has previously been taken to be about 675 Ma, but recent 40Ar/39Ar dating by Baksi has shown that this is the time of post-metamorphic cooling to 200–250°C. Hornblendes record initial cooling of the intrusion to 590±20°C at 1110 Ma and this is the best estimate of the age of the A remanence. Successful Thellier-type palaeointensity determinations on 11 Tudor samples confirm that the A NRM is a TRM and indicate a palaeofield at this time of 18–27 μT, about 50–70 per cent of the present field intensity at 27° magnetic latitude. The anomalous Tudor A palaeopole, which lies well to the west of both 1000–800 Ma Grenvillian palaeopoles and 1100–1050 Ma poles from Interior Laurentia, is interpreted as recording divergence between Grenvillia and Interior Laurentia just before the Grenvillian orogeny, rather than a post-metamorphic extension of the apparent polar wander path as previously assumed.  相似文献

The traveltime perturbation equations for the quasi-compressional and the two quasi-shear waves propagating in a factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media are derived. The concept of FAI media simplifies considerably these equations. In the FAI medium, the density normalized elastic parameters a ijkl ( X i ) can be described by the relation a ijkl ( X i) = f 2( x i ) A ijkl, where A ijkl are constants, independent of coordinates x i and f 2( x i) is a continuous smooth function of x i . The types of anisotropy ( A ijkl ) and inhomogeneity [ f ( x i)] are not restricted. The traveltime perturbations of individual seismic body waves ( q P , qS 1 and qS 2) propagating in the FAI medium depend, of course, both on the structural pertubations [δ f 2( x i)] and on the anisotropy perturbations (δ A ijkl ), but both these effects are fully separated. The perturbation equations for the time delay between the two qS -waves propagating in the FAI medium are simplified even more. If the unperturbed (background) medium is isotropic, the perturbation of the time delay does not depend on the structural perturbations (δ f 2( x i) at all. This striking result, valid of course only in the framework of first-order perturbation theory, will simplify considerably the interpretation of the time delay between the two split qS -waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. Numerical examples are presented.  相似文献

Summary. Temperatures of CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite glass) shocked to pressures between 48 and 117 GPa have been measured in the range from 2500 to 5600 K, using optical pyrometry techniques. The pressure dependence of the shock temperatures deviates significantly from predictions based on a single high-pressure phase. Either a variable specific heat, or the existence of three phase transitions, at pressures of about 55, 85 and 100 GPa and with transition energies of about 0.5 MJ kg−1 each (∼ 1.5 MJ kg−1 total) can explain the shock-temperature data. The proposed phase transition at 100 GPa can possibly be identified with the stishovite melting transition. Theoretical models of the time dependence of the thermal radiation from the shocked anorthite based on the geometry of the experiment and the absorptive properties of the shocked material yield good agreement with observations, indicating that it is not necessary to invoke intrinsic time dependences to explain the data in many cases. Observed time dependences were used to calculate absorption coefficients of the shocked material of from about 2 mm−1 to greater than 24 mm−1– an increasing function of shock pressure. The assumption that the shocked material radiates as a black body is supported by the theoretical model, and by the close agreement between measured and calculated black body spectral radiance as a function of wavelength.  相似文献

Summary. This note presents an exact analytical formula for determining the magnitude of coseismic surface volume change (δ V ) of earthquake faults in a half-space. For a Poisson solid, the formula is remarkably simple; δ V = M zz |8μ, where M zz is one of the moment tensor elements of the source. Maximum δ V values derive from dip slip on faults plunging 45°. For these events, surface volume changes of 0.0001 and 4.3 km3 can be expected for magnitude 5 and 8 earthquakes respectively. All of the coseismic surface volume change is recovered in the interseismic period through relaxation of the Earth and rebound of the surface. A useful rule of thumb for estimating the magnitude of vertical rebound in 45° dip slip events is δ h p=Δ s /24, where Δ s is the coseismic slip on the fault.  相似文献

Summary. It has been reported that no stoichiometric FeO can be formed at temperatures above about 600°C regardless of pressure. The stoichiometry of Fe X O quenched from static high pressure and temperature experiments appears to decrease with increasing pressure in the range 100–300kbar. On the basis of these observations, we have re-interpreted the recent shock results on Fe0.94O, and have found that the Hugoniot data can be reasonable interpreted by the same shift in stoichiometry as observed in the static high-pressure experiments instead of a first-order transformation as proposed. If oxygen is assumed to be the light component of the outer core, the outer core can be chemically homogeneous only if the stoichiometry of Fe X O decreases with increasing pressure. A constant stoichiometry would demand that the oxygen content decreases by a factor of 2 from the top to the bottom of the outer core. A chemically homogeneous outer core is consistent with a convecting outer core.  相似文献

Summary. Palaeomagnetic investigations were carried out on nine lava flows around the Dhar region, which constitute the northern part of the Deccan traps. The stability of remanent magnetism of these specimens was analysed by an alternating magnetic field, thermal demagnetization and memory tests. Six flows exhibited characteristic components of magnetization, with a mean direction of D =143°, I =+46° ( K = 107.1, α95=5.5°). This gives a VGP located at 29° N, 67° W (δp=4.5°, δm= 7.0°). The lower site with normal magnetization and the upper five sites with reverse magnetization indicate a geomagnetic field reversal during the initial phases of Deccan volcanism in the Early Tertiary period. A rapid northward migration of about 18° in latitude and a simultaneous anticlockwise rotation of 37° is calculated for the subcontinent.  相似文献

Summary. The segregation of melt from a partially molten source region requires a corresponding deformation of the unmelted residue ('matrix'). The role of matrix deformation during melt segregation is examined using simple one-dimensional models, for which the deformation consists only of bulk compression or 'compaction'. In model I, a volume fraction φ0 of ascending mantle material undergoes pressure-release melting at a depth z = 0 (localized melting). Compaction of the matrix occurs in a boundary layer whose thickness (reduced compaction length δR) is proportional to the square root of the matrix viscosity. In the Earth's mantle, δR∼ 10–100 m, indicating that compaction cannot be important over large distances. Model II examines the case in which melting occurs over a depth range of order h (distributed melting). In the limit h ≪δR, the solution is the same as for the case of localized melting, except in a 'melting layer' of thickness ∼ h near z = 0. In the more realistic limit h ≫δR, compaction makes a negligible contribution to the balance of forces associated with melt segregation. This result is also valid for the more general case of two-dimensional flow. Compaction is therefore likely to be of negligible importance in the Earth's mantle, with the consequence that melt segregation can be accurately described by Darcy's law.  相似文献

The sea lochs (fjords) of north-west Scotland are located in a region of Europe particularly well situated to monitor changes in westerly air streams. The moisture transported in these air streams has a profound effect on regional precipitation, freshwater run-off and, in turn, sea loch circulation. The gentle slope of the regional salinity:δ18O mixing-line, defined as 0.18 ‰ per salinity unit, suggests that the temperature: δ18O relationship may be readily resolved in these coastal waters. Deep-water renewal events, both observed and predicted from empirical models, in the bottom-waters of Loch Etive provide an opportunity to assess the temperature, salinity and δ18O relationship. Predicted changes in δ18Ocalcite as a function of changing salinity (ΔS) and changing temperature (ΔT) during deep-water renewal events suggest that >80% fall above analytical detection limits. The theoretical likelihood of recording such renewal events in the "palaeoclimate" record appears to be promising, but temperature and salinity change during renewal events may have either sign. Scottish fjords, because of the relatively small impact which salinity has on δ18Owater, may provide useful study sites in palaeoclimate research, particularly where palaeotemperature is the primary record of interest.  相似文献

A detailed record of mineral magnetic properties of a loess–palaeosol profile comprising seven loess horizons, six interbedded palaeosols and recent soil at the top in NE Bulgaria is analysed. A strong contrast between the soil and loess susceptibilities as well as other concentration-dependent hysteresis parameters is present, similar to the well-documented magnetic characteristics of the Chinese loess ( Hus & Han 1992 ; Maher & Thompson 1992 ; Heller & Evans 1995 ; Hunt et al. 1995 ). The magnetic enhancement of the palaeosol units is caused by very fine-grained pedogenic magnetite with superparamagnetic behaviour. Thermomagnetic analyses on bulk material suggest magnetite and maghemite as the main ferrimagnetic carriers in both soil and loess horizons. Their relative proportions are shown to reflect different palaeoclimatic conditions. Chernozem soils, which include recent soil S0 and first and second palaeosols S1 and S2 developed under steppe vegetation, show a high degree of low-temperature oxidation of the pedogenic magnetite to maghemite. This material is characterized by coercive force H c showing even higher values than those of the parent loess material. The older palaeosols (S4 to S6 ) were formed during more humid climatic conditions and therefore probably developed as forest types. Rock magnetic data suggest the existence here of only partly oxidized magnetite grains. The behaviour of the thermomagnetic curves, characterized by a kink at 200 °C, may be due to either a release of internal stress (built up as a result of partial low-temperature oxidation) or interactions between two phases.  相似文献

Magnetic susceptibility ( χ ) variations and the behaviour of the ratio of susceptibility to saturation magnetization ( χ/J s ) along the loess/palaeosol section at Koriten (NE Bulgaria) are used to deduce climatic changes during the Pleistocene in southeastern Europe. A good correlation of susceptibility variations with the astronomically tuned oxygen isotope record from ODP site 677 enables us to propose a more precise dating of the upper part of the Bulgarian loess complex. Close correspondence between susceptibility and δ 1 8 O records demonstrates the global significance of the palaeoclimatic signal recorded, although differences in relative amplitudes of χ and χ/J s and δ 1 8 O create difficulties in making quantitative estimates of the climatic humidity in the past. The role of local factors affecting the palaeoclimatic mineral magnetic record deduced from the profile studied in Bulgaria is discussed.  相似文献

Low-temperature rock magnetic measurements have distinct diagnostic value. However, in most bulk marine sediments the concentration of ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic minerals is extremely low, so even sensitive instrumentation often responds to the paramagnetic contribution of the silicate matrix in the residual field of the magnetometer. Analysis of magnetic extracts is usually performed to solve the problems raised by low magnetic concentrations. Additionally magnetic extracts can be used for several other analyses, for example electron microscopy or X-ray diffraction. The magnetic extraction technique is generally sufficient for sediments dominated by magnetite. In this study however, we show that high-coercivity components are rather underrepresented in magnetic extracts of sediments with a more complex magnetic mineralogy. We test heavy liquid separation, using hydrophilic sodium polytungstenate solution Na6[H2W12O40], to demonstrate the efficiencies of both concentration techniques. Low-temperature cycling of zero-field-cooled, field-cooled and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization acquired at room temperature was performed on dry bulk sediments, magnetic extracts, and heavy liquid separates of clay-rich pelagic sediments originating from the Equatorial Atlantic. The results of the thermomagnetic measurements clarify that magnetic extraction favours components with high spontaneous magnetization, such as magnetite and titanomagnetite. The heavy liquid separation is unbiased with respect to high- and low-coercive minerals, thus it represents the entire magnetic assemblage.  相似文献

Magnetic properties of sediments from a core (10 m long) in the southern basin of the Caspian Sea have been investigated. Varying concentrations of greigite (Fe3S4) dominate the magnetic fraction in Late Pleistocene sediments. The synsedimentary formation of greigite indicates that the Late Pleistocene Caspian Sea was a brackish or fresh-water, poorly ventilated basin and suggests a water level higher than at the present. The variation in magnetic parameters, with the detrital magnetite-bearing fraction remaining constant, is interpreted in terms of greigite grain-size variation and related to the slight variation in water salinity. The Holocene sediments are characterized by detrital magnetite. This indicates better ventilation of the basin and suggests lower water levels than in the Late Pleistocene. The gradual change in magnetic properties of the sediments between 90 and ≈60 cm depth, with decreasing quantities of greigite, indicates stepwise establishment of oxic conditions in the Holocene.  相似文献

Thermal generation of ferromagnetic minerals from iron-enriched smectites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In recent years remagnetization of orogenic belts has been explained by fluid migration through rocks undergoing deformation. A laboratory study of remagnetization is presented in which varying amounts of iron (0-13.5 weight per cent Fe2O3) are adsorbed onto smectite surfaces. All smectite samples contain structural Fe (III) which is located in octahedral sites and is thermally stable up to 700 C. An increase in the amount of iron adsorbed onto the clay surface leads to the formation of ferric nanophases in which parts are magnetic. Mineralogical changes that occur during thermal treatment between room temperature and 700 C were monitored using electron spin resonance (ESR), bulk susceptibility, acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and Curie temperature analysis. After heating the samples to 250 C, a new ferrimagnetic phase is created as indicated by ESR and IRM acquisition. ESR spectra, IRM acquisition and Curie analyses suggest that magnetite is the predominant phase that is being created. These grains continue to be created and grow with heating up to 500 C. Above this temperature a decrease in the intensity of the IRM at 1T suggests that the phase is being transformed into haematite. The thermal experiments on iron-loaded smectites show that surface-induced processes can lead to the formation of new magnetic minerals under conditions characteristic of low-grade metamorphism.  相似文献

Summary. Asymptotic expressions for components of the electromagnetic field of a grounded electric dipole are considered for the model consisting of a thin surface-layer overlapping a stratified medium with a highly resistive screen on the roof. It is shown that the method of spatial derivatives makes it possible to obtain proper estimates of the impedance at distances of r ≥|λ0| from the nearest edge of the surface anomaly (|λ0| being the effective depth of the field penetration in the underlying section). the magnetotelluric methods allow one to obtain the true values of impedance, provided r ≥ max {|λ0|, |/( S −1+ Z 0|1/2} where S is the integrated conductivity of the surface layer, is the transverse resistance of the screen, and Z 0 is the Tikhonov—Cagniard impedance for the medium underlying the surface layer.  相似文献
