The published literature has revealed conflicting results regarding the effect of low plastic fines fraction (Ip?≤?5.0%) on the mechanical behavior of sandy soils. For this reason, the use of different sample initial structures as (initial relative density approach, global void ratio index approach, etc.) could explain these different mechanical responses of granular materials. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the quantitative aspect of the low plastic fines effects on the undrained monotonic response of sand-silt mixtures using the global void ratio approach. To achieve this goal, an experimental testing program through controlled monotonic triaxial tests was carried out on reconstituted saturated Chlef sand containing from 0 to 50% silt with an interval of 10% at three global void ratios (e?=?0.64, 0.66 and 0.68) and subjected to constant confining pressure (σ'3?=?100 kPa). The different samples were reconstituted using two different preparation techniques: DFP and MT. The obtained results show that the low plastic fines content appears as a very relevant parameter in the characterization of the mechanical response of sand-silt mixture samples reconstituted at constant global void ratios, where the steady state shear strength and instability shear strength decreased with the increase in low plastic fines content up to the limiting fines contents (Fc?=?40% and Fc?=?10%) considering both studied initial structures (Dry funnel pluviation and Moist tamping), respectively. Beyond these thresholds fines contents, a reverse trend was observed for all parameters under study. Moreover, the test results indicate that the brittleness index, flow potential (Vf), friction index, equivalent void ratio (e*) and equivalent relative density (Dr*) could be considered as reliable parameters in the prediction of the mechanical behavior of the silty sand soils under study.

Gap-graded granular soils are used as construction materials worldwide, and their hydraulic conductivity depends on their relative content of coarse and fine grains, initial conditions, and particle shape. In this study, a series of constant head hydraulic conductivity tests were performed on gap-graded granular soils with different initial relative densities, fine contents, and particle shapes. The test results show that the hydraulic conductivity decreases with an increase in fine fraction and then remains approximately constant beyond the “transitional fine content.” The role of the structural effect on the hydraulic conductivity is different from that on the mechanical properties (such as stiffness and shear strength). This can be attributed to the degree of filling within inter-aggregate voids, disturbance of soil structure, and densified fine bridges between coarse aggregates. The equivalent void ratio concept was introduced into the Kozeny–Carman formula to capture the effect of fines (aggregates) on the “coarse-dominated” (“fine-dominated”) structure, and a simple model is proposed to capture the change of hydraulic conductivity of gap-granular soils. The model incorporates a structural variable to capture the effect of fines on “coarse-dominated” structure and coarse aggregates on “fine-dominated” structure. The performance of the model was verified with experimental data from this study and previously reported data compiled from the literature. The results reveal that the proposed model is simple yet effective at capturing the hydraulic conductivity of gap-graded granular soils with a wide range of fine contents, initial conditions, and particle shapes.

When the slope geometry, unit weight and pore water pressure distribution in a homogeneous soil slope are given, the location of the critical slip surface for a particular method of slices is related only to the ratio of c′ (cohesion) and tan ϕ′ (internal friction angle). To utilize this relationship in back calculating c′ and ϕ′ values, two slope models with circular slip mechanism are presented to represent shear failures in simple fill or cut slopes and long natural slopes, and for each of the models, two dimensionless parameters regarding c′/tan ϕ′ and maximum depth of the critical slip surface are introduced. Based on the new findings from limit equilibrium analysis of slope models, charts are plotted to show the relationships of the two dimensionless parameters and ϕ′ values for a safety factor of unity. Using the charts can make a rapid estimate of the magnitude of both c′ and ϕ′ from a known position of the failure surface in a homogeneous slope.  相似文献

The flow direction is generally different from the gravity direction in geotechnical structures or slopes, the effect of which during suffusion remains unclear. This paper presents a coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method approach to simulate the particle–fluid interaction relevant to this problem. The CFD-DEM approach is first benchmarked by a classic granular system problem, which is then used to investigate the characteristics of suffusion and its impact on the mechanical behavior. Five different angles between gravity and seepage directions for gap-graded soils with two fines contents are examined. Both the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics during suffusion and triaxial loading tests are analyzed. The direction angle is found to play a significant role affecting the erosion process and the mechanical consequence of soils. The results show that the greater the angle is, the harder it is for suffusion to occur and continue.

The vertical uplift resistance of circular plate anchors, embedded horizontally in a clayey stratum whose cohesion increases linearly with depth, has been obtained under undrained ( = 0) condition. The axi-symmetric static limit analysis formulation in combination with finite elements proposed recently by the authors has been employed. The variation of the uplift factor (Fc) with changes in the embedment ratio (H/B) has been computed for several rates of increases of soil cohesion with depth. It is noted that in all the cases, the magnitude of Fc increases continuously with depth up to a certain value of Hcr/B beyond which the uplift factor becomes essentially constant. The proposed static limit analysis formulation is seen to provide acceptable results even for the two other simple chosen axi-symmetric problems.  相似文献

Present study addresses the role of major plate-driving forces, particularly the slab pull and slab resistive forces, for the generation of 26 December 2004 M w > 9.0 off Sumatra megathrust earthquake. Major controls on the plate-driving forces are normally visualized through age, speed, and average dip of the slab during subduction. Wide variation in age, plate obliquity, stress obliquity, subduction rate, dip angle, and flexing depth of the subducting oceanic lithosphere between Andaman and Sumatra thus allowed us for quantitative evaluation of the slab pull (F SP) and slab resistive (F SR) forces in three well-defined sectors (I, II and III). Computed values of these forces in the three sectors: (1) F SP = 1.29 × 1013 N/m, F SR = 1.41 × 1013 N/m; sector I, (2) F SP = 2.10 × 1013 N/m, F SR = 1.13 × 1013 N/m; sector II, and (3) F SP = 2.08 × 1013 N/m, F SR = 2.72 × 1013 N/m; sector III clearly suggest a spatial variation of stress regime in the subducting oceanic lithosphere. Excess F SR in sectors I and III are interpreted as the causative forces behind the triggering of major seismic energy bursts near Sumatra and Andaman on 26 December 2004. A gap of minimum seismic energy burst near Great Nicobar possibly was controlled by the excess of F SP in sector II. This study further advocates that the cyclic stress, resulted from unbalanced component of slab resistive force, had a definite control on the occurrence of 2004 off Sumatra megathrust earthquake around the flexing zone of the subducting lithosphere.  相似文献

In this work, 3D discrete element method modeling of drained shearing tests with gap-graded soils after internal erosion is carried out based on published experimental results. The erosion in the model is achieved by randomly deleting fine particles, mimicking the salt dissolving process in the experiments. The present model successfully simulates the stress–strain behavior of the physical test by employing the roll resistance and lateral membrane. The case without erosion shows a strain-softening and dilative response, while strain-hardening and contractive response starts to occur as the degree of erosion increases. The dilative to contractive transition is mainly caused by the increase in void ratio due to the loss of fine particles. The change from dilative behavior to contractive behavior is more abrupt for the specimen with larger fine particle percentage because the soil skeleton is mainly controlled by the fine particles instead of by the coarse soil particles. The transition from “fines in sand” to “sand in fines” might be associated with the rapid increasing in the contacts associated with fine particles in the specimen as the percentage of fine content increases. The erosion scenario based on the hydraulic gradient is also modeled by deleting the fine particles based on the ranking of the contact force. Compared with the scenario based on random deletion, the remaining fine particles for the erosion scenario based on the ranking of contact force are more dispersedly distributed, which might benefit the small strain stiffness but result in a smaller strength. This work provides some insights for better understanding the mechanism behind the internal erosion and the associated stress–strain behavior of soil. The gradient of the critical state line increases with more loss of fine particles denoting that the fine particles are helpful for holding the structure of the soils from larger deformation.

A consistent methodology based on the critical state framework to characterize the different regimes of fine-grained soil behavior under earthquake loads is put forward. Shear strength and deformation behavior of soils depend in a major way on the combination of volume and confining stress. Depending on their combination, a soil aggregate may fracture into clastic debris, fail with fault planes, or yield plastically. This characterization of the class of limiting soil behavior is used to analyze the potential for large deformation and liquefaction in fine grained soils. The central piece of the proposed characterization is the (η, LI5) stability diagram where η = q/p′ and LI5 = LI + 0.5 log (p′/5). This diagram captures the effects of soil plasticity through liquidity index LI, confinement through mean normal effective stress p′, and shear stress q through the stress ratio η. The three regions of behavior; fracture, fault, and fold/yield are identified. Soils become susceptible to liquefaction when they shift into the fracture zone (LI5  0.4), or if they plot outside of the stable yielding region.Under earthquake loading, the initial soil states will migrate into different regions in the stability diagram depending on their initial location, shear stress increment, and, pore pressure response. The final position of the soil state would dictate the type of limiting behavior expected in the field; fracture, rupture or yield. The final states which fall into the fracture region have the potential for catastrophic failures including “liquefaction”; the ones which fall onto the rupture region would experience the attainment of a peak stress ratio followed by softening along failure planes; the ones in the yield region would continue to yield in a stable manner. The latter two types of deformations while resulting in large deformation may not be of a catastrophic nature. The proposed characterization is used to examine the liquefaction susceptibility of fine grained soils from China, Taiwan, and Turkey. Use of simplified empirical criteria based on parameters such as plasticity index and fines contents may not capture the true nature of the type of undrained limiting behavior of fine grains soils in the field including liquefaction.  相似文献

Granular materials like sand are widely used in civil engineering. They are composed of different sizes of grains, which generate a complex behaviour, difficult to assess experimentally. Internal instability of a granular material is its inability to prevent the loss of its fine particles under flow effect. It is geometrically possible if the fine particles can migrate through the pores of the coarse soil matrix and results in a change in its mechanical properties. This paper uses the three‐dimensional Particle Flow Code (PFC3D/DEM) to study the stability/instability of granular materials and their mechanical behaviour after suffusion. Stability properties of widely graded materials are analysed by simulating the transport of smaller particles through the constrictions formed by the coarse particles under the effect of a downward flow with uniform pressure gradient. A sample made by an initially stable material according to the Kenney & Lau geometrical criterion was divided into five equal layers. The classification of these layers by this criterion before and after the test shows that even stable granular materials can lose fine particles and present local instability. The failure criterion of eroded samples, in which erosion is simulated by progressive removal of fine particles, evolves in an unexpected way. Internal friction angle increases with the initial porosity, the rate of lost fine particles and the average diameter D50. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The hydro-mechanical behaviour of a reconstituted unsaturated soil under different suctions and strain rates was studied through various rate-controlled unsaturated/undrained triaxial tests. The fully saturated reconstituted specimens were desaturated to four different initial suctions (s0?=?0, 100 kPa, 200 kPa and 300 kPa) and then triaxially sheared (conventional triaxial compression) at three different strain rates in undrained conditions (\(\dot{\varepsilon }_{1} = 0.001\) h?1, 0.01 h?1, and 0.1 h?1). The observed hydro-mechanical behaviour during shearing including the volumetric strain, deviatoric stress, degree of saturation and suction is presented and discussed in this paper. The results indicate that when the strain rate rises at the given initial suctions (or pore water pressures), the maximum deviatoric stress (qmax), critical net stress ratio (M) and critical state suction (sc) increase but the degree of saturation (Src) and volumetric strain at the critical state (εcv ) reduce. The critical effective stress ratio (M′) is not dependent on the strain rate for saturated and unsaturated samples. The critical state lines for unsaturated soils with the constant strain rates are parallel with each other in the e???lnp′ space.

A cross-correlation analysis is conducted to determine the impacts of the heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity Ks, soil cohesion c′ and soil friction angle (tan φ′) on the uncertainty of slope stability in time and space during rainfall. We find the relative importance of tan φ′ and c′ depends on the effective stress. While the sensitivity of the stability to the variability of Ks is small, the large coefficient of variation of Ks may exacerbate the variability of pore-water pressure. Therefore, characterizing the heterogeneity of hydraulic properties and pore-water distribution in the field is critical to the stability analysis.  相似文献

A single crystal X-ray diffraction study on lithium tetraborate Li2B4O7 (diomignite, space group I41 cd) has been performed under pressure up to 8.3 GPa. No phase transitions were found in the pressure range investigated, and hence the pressure evolution of the unit-cell volume of the I41 cd structure has been described using a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state (BM-EoS) with the following parameters: V 0  = 923.21(6) Å3, K 0  = 45.6(6) GPa, and K′ = 7.3(3). A linearized BM-EoS was fitted to the axial compressibilities resulting in the following parameters a 0  = 9.4747(3) Å, K 0a  = 73.3(9) GPa, K′ a  = 5.1(3) and c 0  = 10.2838(4) Å, K 0c  = 24.6(3) GPa, K′ c  = 7.5(2) for the a and c axes, respectively. The elastic anisotropy of Li2B4O7 is very large with the zero-pressure compressibility ratio β 0c 0a  = 3.0(1). The large elastic anisotropy is consistent with the crystal structure: A three-dimensional arrangement of relatively rigid tetraborate groups [B4O7]2− forms channels occupied by lithium along the polar c–axis, and hence compression along the c axis requires the shrinkage of the lithium channels, whereas compression in the a direction depends mainly on the contraction of the most rigid [B4O7]2− units. Finally, the isothermal bulk modulus obtained in this work is in general agreement with that derived from ultrasonic (Adachi et al. in Proceedings-IEEE Ultrasonic Symposium, 228–232, 1985; Shorrocks et al. in Proceedings-IEEE Ultrasonic Symposium, 337–340, 1981) and Brillouin scattering measurements (Takagi et al. in Ferroelectrics, 137:337–342, 1992).  相似文献

Organic material in metal contaminated soils around an abandoned magnetite mine–smelter complex in the critical Highlands watershed protects the groundwater and surface water from contamination. Metals in these waters were consistently below local and national water standards. Two groups of soil types cover the area: (1) Group A disturbed metal-rich soils, and (2) Group B undisturbed organic soils. Chromium and nickel were more elevated than other metals with Cr more widespread than Ni. In Group A, Cr correlated strongly with sesquioxides in the lower horizons (Fe2O3: r = 0.74, p < 0.025; Al2O3: r = 0.92, p < 0.005). In Group B, Cr correlated strongly (r = 0.96, p < 0.005) with soil organic matter (SOM) in the O-horizons. Ni–Cr (Group A: 52 and 70% in O- and lower horizons, respectively; Group B: ~100% in both horizons) and V–Cr correlations (78% only in Group A lower horizons) suggest similar retention mechanisms for these elements. Average soil \textpH\textCaCl2 {\text{pH}}_{{{\text{CaCl}}_{2} }} for both groups ranged between 3.65 and 5.91, suggesting that soil acidity is determined by organic acids and solubility of Al3+ releasing H+ ions. SOM and sesquioxides contribute significantly to creating naturally occurring filtration systems, removing metals, and protecting water quality. High Ca, Fe, and Ti in Group A soils suggest slag and ash were mixed into the soils. Some low-Cr sources include magnetite, slag, and ash (100, 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively). Constant ZrO 2 :TiO 2 ratios in the lower soils indicate soil formation from breakdown of underlying tailing rocks, contributing Cr to these layers.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that shearing stresses and normal tensile stresses both play a decisive role in fracturing and brittle failure of rock material, a novel strength criterion was developed in one of the earlier works of the author. In the criterion, a certain parameter ν′ occurs which depends on the structure of the material. Originally, the parameter was treated as a constant, which resulted in a linear form of the strength function F σ 1 = f(σ 3), where σ 3 = σ 2. Although the linear strength criterion is sometimes found to be applicable to various particular rock materials, it is not, in general, of a universal character. Analysis of the triaxial test results for 75 different sandstones revealed that parameter ν′ usually increases in an exponential or linear manner as confining pressure increases, and only in isolated cases does it seem to be independent of the confining pressure. For these three types of function ν′ = f(p) appropriate strength criteria F σ 1 = f(σ 3) are given in the present paper. These criteria were used to fit all of the collected empirical data sets. In general, a very good fit to the data was obtained.  相似文献

Optical constituents as suspended particulate matter (SPM), chlorophyll (Chl-a), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and grain sizes were obtained on a transect in the arctic fjord-type estuary Kangerlussuaq (66°) in August 2007 along with optical properties. These comprised diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling PAR (K d(PAR)), upwelling PAR (K u(PAR)), particle beam attenuation coefficient (c p), and irradiance reflectance R(−0, PAR). PAR is white light between 400 and 700 nm. The estuary receives melt water from the Greenland Inland Ice and stations covered a transect from the very high turbid melt water outlet to clear marine waters. Results showed a strong spatial variation with high values as for suspended matter concentrations, CDOM, diffuse attenuation coefficient K d(PAR), particle beam attenuation coefficients (c p), and reflectance R(−0, PAR) at the melt water outlet. Values of optical constituents and properties decreased with distance from the melt water outlet to a more or less constant level in central and outer part of the estuary. There was a strong correlation between inorganic suspended matter (SPMI) and diffuse attenuation coefficient K d(PAR) (r 2 = 0.92) and also for particle beam attenuation coefficient (c p; r 2 = 0.93). The obtained SPMI specific attenuation—K d*(PAR) = 0.13 m2 g−1 SPMI—and the SPMI specific particle beam attenuation—c p* = 0.72 m2 g−1—coefficients were about two times higher than average literature values. Irradiance reflectance R(−0, PAR) was comparatively high (0.09−0.20) and showed a high (r 2 = 0.80) correlation with K u(PAR). Scattering dominated relative to absorption—b(PAR)/a(PAR) = 12.3. Results strongly indicated that the high values in the optical properties were related to the very fine particle sizes (mean = 2–6 μm) of the suspended sediment. Data and results are discussed and compared to similar studies from both temperate and tropical estuaries.  相似文献

The thermo-elastic behavior of a natural epidote [Ca1.925 Fe0.745Al2.265Ti0.004Si3.037O12(OH)] has been investigated up to 1,200 K (at 0.0001 GPa) and 10 GPa (at 298 K) by means of in situ synchrotron powder diffraction. No phase transition has been observed within the temperature and pressure range investigated. PV data fitted with a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state (BM-EoS) give V 0 = 458.8(1)Å3, K T0 = 111(3) GPa, and K′ = 7.6(7). The confidence ellipse from the variance–covariance matrix of K T0 and K′ from the least-square procedure is strongly elongated with negative slope. The evolution of the “Eulerian finite strain” vs “normalized stress” yields Fe(0) = 114(1) GPa as intercept values, and the slope of the regression line gives K′ = 7.0(4). The evolution of the lattice parameters with pressure is slightly anisotropic. The elastic parameters calculated with a linearized BM-EoS are: a 0 = 8.8877(7) Å, K T0(a) = 117(2) GPa, and K′(a) = 3.7(4) for the a-axis; b 0 = 5.6271(7) Å, K T0(b) = 126(3) GPa, and K′(b) = 12(1) for the b-axis; and c 0 = 10.1527(7) Å, K T0(c) = 90(1) GPa, and K’(c) = 8.1(4) for the c-axis [K T0(a):K T0(b):K T0(c) = 1.30:1.40:1]. The β angle decreases with pressure, βP(°) = βP0 −0.0286(9)P +0.00134(9)P 2 (P in GPa). The evolution of axial and volume thermal expansion coefficient, α, with T was described by the polynomial function: α(T) = α0 + α1 T −1/2. The refined parameters for epidote are: α0 = 5.1(2) × 10−5 K−1 and α1 = −5.1(6) × 10−4 K1/2 for the unit-cell volume, α0(a) = 1.21(7) × 10−5 K−1 and α1(a) = −1.2(2) × 10−4 K1/2 for the a-axis, α0(b) = 1.88(7) × 10−5 K−1 and α1(b) = −1.7(2) × 10−4 K1/2 for the b-axis, and α0(c) = 2.14(9) × 10−5 K−1 and α1(c) = −2.0(2) × 10−4 K1/2 for the c-axis. The thermo-elastic anisotropy can be described, at a first approximation, by α0(a): α0(b): α0(c) = 1 : 1.55 : 1.77. The β angle increases continuously with T, with βT(°) = βT0 + 2.5(1) × 10−4 T + 1.3(7) × 10−8 T 2. A comparison between the thermo-elastic parameters of epidote and clinozoisite is carried out.  相似文献

The EPR spectra of Maxixe-type beryl contain a large number of overlapping signals. The angular dependence of the 1:3:3:1 signal typical for the CH3 radical shows that this radical is located at the center of the channel cavity with its symmetry axis parallel to the crystal c-axis and is rotating around this axis. Its EPR spectrum is axially symmetric with g // = 2.00263, g  = 2.00249 and A// = 2.288 mT, A = 2.256 mT. These anisotropies have the opposite signs of those found for surface-adsorbed methyl radicals. Hydrogen atoms are located at position 2a at the center of the beryl cavity and the EPR parameters of the narrow doublet signal are A 0 = 1,407 MHz and g = 2.00230. Another doublet signal, which is broader and has axial symmetry with g // = 2.00265, g  = 2.00625 and A// = 0.895 mT, A = 0.885 mT, could come from a HCO3 radical. One narrow and easily saturated signal with g // = 2.00227 and g  = 2.00386 is interpreted to arise from a carbon monoxide radical in the beryl channel, oriented with its axis parallel to the crystal c-axis. Additional weak doublet lines, which have similar g values as the carbon monoxide radical, are created by nearby hydrogens. A powder spectrum with g // = 2.0017 and g  = 2.0004 appears upon UV irradiation of the single crystal and is easily saturated. This spectrum is interpreted to arise from a carbon dioxide radical, which rotates around its symmetry axis.  相似文献
