Simple, approximate solution of forced vibrations problems of continuous systems

This paper deals with an application of Clough and Penzien's suggestion [(1975), Dynamics of Structures, pp. 549–550. McGraw-Hill, New York] for improving the results obtained by means of the Rayleigh-Ritz method when dealing with forced vibrations problems. Viscous damping is taken into account.

Histochemistry as a tool for examining possible pathologic cause-and-effect relationships between heavy metal and inflammatory lesions in oysters, Crassostrea virginica

Unexplained inflammatory lesions have been seen on many occasions in oysters (Crassostrea virginica) that have been examined by histopathologic methods. Application of the Mallory's hematin and the rubeanic acid methods for demonstration of copper in histologic sections revealed strong staining reactions in granules of some, but not all, granular hemocytes. These cells were clearly involved as constituents of acute inflammatory lesions characterized by infiltration of arteries, occlusion of veins, and diapedesis through external epithelia of the mantle and gastrointestinal tract. Heavily contaminated sites (i.e. Raritan Bay, New Jersey) showed strong staining reactions in a large number of animals examined. Control sites such as Great Bay, New Jersey, showed much lighter reactions. Seasonal sampling in the New Jersey sites revealed the most intense involvement in the late summer with apparent decreasing staining intensities in the fall. Other species of bivalve mollusks (Mytilus edulis and Mercenaria mercenaria) only showed significant staining reactions for heavy metal in kidney tissues with no evidence that heavily contaminated sites had higher levels. These results constitute preliminary evidence of a cause-and-effect relationship between a heavy metal contaminant (most probably copper) and inflammatory lesions in the oyster.     

Intraspecific Interactions and Risk of Predation for Dyspanopeus sayi (Decapoda: Xanthidae) Living on Polychaete (Filograna implexa,Serpulidae) Colonies*

Abstract. Along the Atlantic coast of the United States, the mud crab Dyspanopeus sayi frequently occurs in crevices and depressions within aggregated calcareous tubes (termed “heads”) of the serpulid polychaete Filograna implexa. In New Jersey, U.S.A., waters, crab number was significantly correlated with the logarithm of worm tube colony volume. Laboratory experiments suggested that crabs compete for shelter within worm colonies. Additional laboratory experiments indicated that colony occupancy greatly decreased the risk of predation by blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), and field tethering experiments also demonstrated that colony occupancy significantly decreased predation risk. Thus, the consequence of holding space on worm tube heads is a greatly increased probability of survival.     

Foreign barnacles transported to New Zealand on an oil platform

Twelve species of barnacles were identified from the fouling community on the parts of the ‘Maui’ oil platform that were submerged during its tow from Japan in 1975 and after its arrival in New Zealand. The stalked barnacles Lepas anatifera L. var. (a) Darwin, L. anserifera L., Conchoderma auritum (L.), and C. virgatum (Spengler) probably settled during the tow across the tropical Pacific, and have been recorded in New Zealand waters before from ships (the Lepas spp.) and vertebrates (the Conchoderma spp.). The acorn barnacles were small, and probably settled in Japanese waters; Balanus variegatus Darwin and B. amphitrite Darwin already occur in northern New Zealand waters. The other six species—B. improvisus Darwin, B. albicostatus Pilsbry, B. reticulatus Utinomi, Megabalanus volcano (Pilsbry), M. rosa (Pilsbry), and Tetraclita squamosa japonica Pilsbry—have not been recorded from New Zealand before.

RFLP analysis of a mitochondrial gene,cytochrome oxidase I (COI) of three species of the genusCalyptogena around Japan

Phylogenetic relationship among three species of deep-sea vesicomyid bivalvesCalyptogena, i.e.,C. soyoae, C. solidissima, C. fausta and an undescribed species of the Iheya Ridge, Okinawa Trough was analyzed on the basis of the RFLP analysis of the fragment (about 1 kbp) of cytochrome oxidase I. Both the two populations ofC. soyoae (off Hatsushima and Okinoyama Bank, Sagami Bay) consisted of two haplotypes, which could be discriminated by only one restriction site (1.7% sequence divergence).Calyptogena of the Iheya Ridge could not be distinguished from one of the two haplotypes ofC. soyoae. Nucleotide substitution rates between species were calculated and dendrograms were constructed.
