Faraday rotation measurements made at a chain of stations and group delay measurements made at Ootacamund from ATS-6 are examined for the partial solar eclipse event of 29 April 1976. There is no evidence of eclipse-induced gravity waves in these measurements extending from Ootacamund near dip equator to Patiala (dip 45° N). Eclipse-induced fluctuations were however reported at Trivandrum, about 300 km south of Ootacamund.  相似文献

Here we discuss some of the progresses that have been made in the last 20 years in the field of oceanic rogue waves, focusing on the role played by leading order equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger and the Korteweg-De Vries equations. For such equations, it is possible, as shown in Onorato et al. (Origin of heavy tail statistics in equations of the nonlinear Schrödinger type: an exact result, 2016. arXiv:1601.04317), to derive a very simple relation in which the variation of the third (for the KdV) and fourth (for the NLS) moment of the probability density function of the wave field can be related to the variation of the spectral bandwidth. These relations give some new perspectives on the formation of rogue waves in a random sea state.  相似文献

The evolution of unidirectional nonlinear sea surface waves is calculated numerically by means of solution of the Euler equations. The wave dynamics corresponds to quasi-equilibrium states characterized by JONSWAP spectra. The spatiotemporal data are collected and processed providing information about the wave height probability and typical appearance of abnormally high waves (rogue waves). The waves are considered at different water depths ranging from deep to relatively shallow cases (k p h > 0.8, where k p is the peak wavenumber, and h is the local depth). The asymmetry between front and rear rogue wave slopes is identified; it becomes apparent for sufficiently high waves in rough sea states at all considered depths k p h ≥ 1.2. The lifetimes of rogue events may reach up to 30–60 wave periods depending on the water depth. The maximum observed wave has a height of about three significant wave heights. A few randomly chosen in situ time series from the Baltic Sea are in agreement with the general picture of the numerical simulations.  相似文献

The Indonesian archipelago which has over 15,000 islands, lies in the tropics between Asia and Australia. This eventually alters the rainfall variability over the region, which was influenced by the Asian-Australian monsoon and controlled by intraseasonal variabilities such as convectively coupled equatorial waves (CCEW), i.e., Kelvin, n?=?1 equatorial Rossby (ER), mixed Rossby gravity (MRG), and n?=?1 Westward inertio gravity (WIG), including the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO). This study examines a 15-year 3B42 data for trapping CCEW and MJO in the region of Indonesia during both active and extreme Western North Pacific (WNP) and Australian (AU) monsoon phases, which are then compared with 30-year rainfall anomalies among 38 synoptic stations over Indonesia. The space–time spectral analysis is employed to filter each wave including the MJO in the equator, then proceeding with the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method to seek each wave peak which then coincides with WNP and AU monsoon peaks over Indonesia. It is concluded that an extreme monsoon classification has proven to control rainfall activity related to the CCEW and MJO at 60.66% during December through February (DJF)-WNP for only the significant wave perturbation value. Meanwhile, the CCEW and MJO significantly increase/decrease precipitation at Day 0 for about 37.88% from the total of Day 1st to Day end. Although the contribution of the CCEW and MJO does not profoundly influence rainfall activity during monsoon phase over Indonesia, they still modulate weather condition for more than 50%. On the other hand, a complex topography with a number of land–sea complexities is capable of influencing the rainfall variability in the region as a negative relationship is associated with the CCEW and MJO either during DJF-WNP or July through August (JAS)-AU monsoon phase.  相似文献

The data of Reed (1983) are analysed to produce the following empirical equations for the amplitude p 0 (overall fluctuation) in Pascals of the air pressure wave associated with a volcanic eruption of volume V km3 or a nuclear explosion of strength M Mt: Here s is the distance from the source in km. $$\begin{gathered} \log _{10} p_0 = 4.44 + \log _{10} V - 0.84\log _{10} s \hfill \\ {\text{ }} = 3.44 + \log _{10} M - 0.84\log _{10} s. \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ Garrett's (1970) theory is examined on the generation of water level fluctuations by an air pressure wave crossing a water depth discontinuity such as a continental shelf. The total amplitude of the ocean wave is determined to be where c 2 1 = gh 1, c 2 2 = gh 2, g is acceleration of gravity, h 1 and h 2 are the water depths on the ocean and shore side of the depth discontinuity, c is the speed of propagation of the air pressure wave, and ? is the water density. $$B = \left[ {\frac{{c_2^2 }}{{c^2 - c_2^2 }} + \frac{{c^2 (c_1 - c_2 )}}{{(c - c_1 )(c^2 - c_2^2 )}}} \right]\frac{{p_0 }}{{g\varrho }}$$ It is calculated that a 10 km3 eruption at Mount St. Augustine would cause a 460 Pa air pressure wave and a discernible water level fluctuation at Vancouver Island of several cm amplitude.  相似文献

The intraseasonal tropical variability (ITV) patterns in the tropical troposphere are documented using double space-time Fourier analysis. Madden and Julian oscillations (MJO) as well as equatorial coupled waves (Kelvin and Rossby) are investigated based on the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data for the 1977–2006 period and the outputs of an intermediate ocean-atmosphere coupled model named LODCA-OTCM. A strong seasonal dependence of the ITV/ENSO relationship is evidenced. The leading relationship for equatorial Rossby waves (with the correlation of the same order than for the MJO) is documented; namely, it is shown that intensification of Rossby waves in the central Pacific during boreal summer precedes by half a year the peak of El Niño. The fact that MJO activity in spring-summer is associated to the strength of subsequent El Niño is confirmed. It is shown that LODCA-QTCM is capable of simulating the convectively coupled equatorial waves in outgoing long wave radiation and zonal wind at 850 hPa fields with skill comparable to other Coupled General Circulation Models. The ITV/ENSO relationship is modulated at low frequency. In particular the periods of low ENSO amplitude are associated with weaker MJO activity and a cancellation of MJO at the ENSO development phase. In opposition, during the decaying phase, MJO signal is strong. The periods of strong ENSO activity are associated with a marked coupling between MJO, Kelvin and equatorially Rossby waves and ENSO; the precursor signal of MJO (Rossby waves) in the western (central) Pacific is obvious. The results provide material for the observed change in ENSO characteristics in recent years and question whether the characteristics of the ITV/ENSO relationship may be sensitive to the observed warming in the central tropical Pacific.  相似文献

Constants occurring in Seggern and Blandford's analytic expression of reduced displacement potential are computed for shot media of alluvium, salt and tuff. The amplitude spectra as well as impulse response of the source function for models of Haskell and Seggern are studied as a function of yield. It is shown that the maximum in amplitude spectrum shifts to lower frequency with increase in yield for a given model. The duration of impulse response is longer for Seggern's model as compared to Haskell's model for a given yield.  相似文献

Thermal equations of state have been derived for polymorphic forms of SiO2 and values of \(\mathop \smallint \limits_0^P\) V T dP have been tabulated. Available experimental data on the phase equilibria at high pressures and temperatures have been used with these equations to calculate the standard thermodynamic functions for the α-quartz-coesite and coesite-stishovite transformations. A study of sensitivity of calculated thermodynamical properties to uncertainties of phase equilibria data, initial data for elastic constants and equations of state has been carried out. The discrepancies between standard thermodynamic properties of these transformations calculated from phase equilibria data and solution calorimetry data still persist.  相似文献

Selected results of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies of amorphous silicates and minerals are presented in order to show their utility in providing short-and, in certain cases, medium-range structural and bonding information for cations and anions. EXAFS and XANES studies of amorphous silicates are reviewed with the objective of illustrating variations in structural environments of the various types of glass-forming cations, including Si, Al, Na, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Yb, and U. Al is shown to occur in tetrahedral coordination in all aluminosilicate glasses examined, including peraluminous compositions. The weakly bonded Na and Ca cations are shown to occur in sites with observed coordination numbers (ranging from 6 to 7) and distances similar to those predicted by molecular dynamics simulations. Elements like Ti, which form bonds of intermediate strength, may show some order beyond the first coordination shell at low concentrations in silicate glasses. EXAFS studies of Yb and U in silicate glasses at trace to minor concentration levels provide unique structural information about the environments of these cations. K-edges and XANES of transition element sulfides, third-row tetrahedral oxyanions, and oxygen in minerals are interpreted in terms of band theory or molecular orbital theory.  相似文献

The effect of spalling and other transfer functions is considered on the amplitude spectra and waveforms of telese mis short periodP wave seismograms generated due to Longshot. Milrow and Cannikin underground nuclear explosions. Source models of Haskell and Seggern were used for computingP wave seismograms from these events. Step-by-step variations of the amplitude spectra and waveforms ofP wave signal as is propagates from source to various seismometer array stations show that the source function, the source crust transfer function, the mantle transfer function and the spalling function are the most important factors that influence shaping of spectra and waveforms ofP seismograms. Comparison of computed and observedP wave seismograms at various seismometer array stations for Longshot explosion shows that computed seismograms do reproduce many of the features of observed seismograms. The results also support the conclusion that overburdenP wave velocity inferred from observed seismograms is less as compared to its value obtained from on-site measurements.  相似文献

Molar elastic strain energy arising from dislocations in andalusite and sillimanite were calculated using equations derived from a non-core, linear elasticity model. For perfect (unit) c screw dislocations in these polymorphs, minimum dislocation densities of about 1010/cm2 are necessary to significantly perturb the andalusite=sillimanite equilibrium boundary in P-T space. Compared to unit c dislocations, smaller energy perturbations arise from dissociated c screw dislocations, which are commonly observed in kyanite and sillimanite. A low computed value of stacking fault energy (~30 ergs/cm2) in these polymorphs is compatible with the large separations of dissociated dislocations in these phases. Dislocation densities in naturally occurring Al2SiO5 polymorphs are typically <108/cm2. Assuming that these densities are representative of those existing during metamorphism, as is supported by the lack of microtextures indicative of strong recovery, it is concluded that molar strain energies corresponding to observed dislocation densities (<108/cm2) result in insignificant perturbation of P-T phase equilibrium boundaries of the Al2SiO5 polymorphs.  相似文献

The distribution of F between tremolite and talc has been determined in metamorphosed siliceous carbonates from the Grenville Province, Ontario. Wavelength dispersive electron microprobe analyses of contiguous, texturally compatible tremolite-talc pairs indicate that the substitution of F for OH is the most significant deviation from end-member stoichiometry in the samples studied. Mixing of F and OH components has been represented by an ideal solution model for F in tremolite and an asymmetric model for F in talc. Both linear and nonlinear regression techniques have been used to derive activity coefficients for the exchange of one equivalent of OH and F components in talc. The following expressions are the result of nonlinear regression of 32 analyses from coexisting mineral pairs: $$\begin{gathered} \ln \gamma _{TC(OH)} = X_{TC(F)}^2 [2.447 - 2.845X_{TC(OH)} ] \hfill \\ \ln \gamma _{TC(F)} = X_{TC(OH)}^2 [1.024 + 2.845X_{TC(F} ] \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ Isobaric \(T - X_{CO_2 } \) sections constructed using these equations show an enhanced stability for the assemblages talc+calcite and phlogopite+quartz+calcite with F substituting for OH. Projection of isothermal invariant points into P-T space predicts a shift in the stability of the assemblage talc-calcite from lower grade into the sillimanite field with increasing substitution of F for OH in talc.  相似文献

Calcium-olivine, γ-Ca2SiO4, larnite, β-Ca2SiO4, merwinite, Ca3Mg(SiO4)2, and monticellite, CaMgSiO4, are considered. According to a rigid oxyanion scheme, eulerian orientation angles of the SiO4 tetrahedra and translation coordinates of Ca and Si atoms are specified as structural variables τk. All derivatives of the static energy (Born model) contain atomic charges and repulsive parameters as unknowns; the minimum energy conditions ?E L/?τk=0 yield 34 equations which are solved by a least-squares method. The set of energy parameters fitting structural properties of all four phases together is: z Ca=1.50, z o=?1.10 e, r Ca=1.05, ρ=0.25 Å; the Mg charge was fixed at 1.38 e, from a previous study on forsterite. An average shift of 0.04 Å is observed between experimental and least-energy calculated atomic positions. Results are compared with those of Mg2SiO4, where the fit was based both on thermoelastic and on structural properties. If no charge values were fixed “a priori”, just ratios between charges could be determined by fitting them to structural data only.  相似文献

In many applications in flows through porous media, one needs to determine the properties of subsurface to detect, monitor, or predict the actions of natural or induced forces. Here, we focus on two important subsurface properties: rock permeability and porosity. A Bayesian approach using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is well suited for reconstructing the spatial distribution of permeability and porosity, and quantifying associated uncertainty in these properties. A crucial step in this approach is the computation of a likelihood function, which involves solving a possibly nonlinear system of partial differential equations. The computation time for the likelihood function limits the number of MCMC iterations that can be performed in a practical period of time. This affects the consistency of the posterior distribution of permeability and porosity obtained by MCMC exploration. To speed-up the posterior exploration, we can use a prefetching technique, which relies on the fact that multiple likelihoods of possible states into the future in an MCMC chain can be computed ahead of time. In this paper, we show that the prefetching technique implemented on multiple processors can make the Bayesian approach computationally tractable for subsurface characterization and prediction of porous media flows.  相似文献

Variations in a solar activity and their effect if any on the temperature of the stratopause are studied. Monthly mean stratopause temperatures during 1969–1976 and departures from the monthly mean value of eight-year period, determined for four equatorial rocket launching stations,viz. Ascension Island, Kwajalem, Fort Sherman and Thumba, are statistically compared with sunspot number departures. To study the effects of seasonal variation on stratopause temperature, the data have been divided into winter, summer and equinoctial periods. Seasonwise study indicates that the correlation between the stratopause temperature and sunspot number is positive and just below the significant level for Thumba and positive and highly significant over all the other stations with a better relationship in equinoctial periods than in both winter and summer. The estimated regression coefficients are positive and significant.  相似文献

Free internal gravity waves, which are typical of the shelf ocean zone are studied. A necessary condition for the existence of nonlinear wave disturbances quasi-periodic in time in a continuously stratified sea with variable depth H is found in the quasistatic and the “hard cap” approximation with respect to dissipative factors and latitudinal variation in the Coriolis parameter. The obtained assessment is equivalent to the condition obtained within the framework of linear theory for the case of the f-plane and a constant depth H.  相似文献

In the lattice energy expression of forsterite, based on a Born-Mayer (electrostatic+repulsive+dispersive) potential, the oxygen charge z o, the hardness parameter ρ and the repulsive radii r Mg and r Si appear as unknown parameters. These were determined by calculating the first and second partial derivatives of the energy with respect to the cell edges, and equalizing them to quantities related to the crystal elastic constants; the overdetermined system of equations was solved numerically, minimizing the root-mean-square deviation. To test the results obtained, the SiO 4 4? ion was assumed to move in the unit-cell, and the least-energy configuration was sought and compared with the experimental one. By combining the two methods, the optimum set of parameters was: z o=?1.34, ρ=0.27 Å, r Mg=0.72 Å, r Si=0.64 Å. The values ?8565.12 and ?8927.28 kJ mol?1 were obtained, respectively, for the lattice energy E Land for its ionic component E L 0 ,which accounts for interactions between Mg2+ and SiO 4 4? ions only. The charge distribution calculated on the SiO 4 4? ion was discussed and compared with other results. Using appropriate thermochemical cycles, the formation enthalpy and the binding energy of SiO 4 4? were estimated to be: ΔH f(SiO 4 4? )=2117.6 and E(SiO 4 4? )=708.6 kJ mol?1, respectively.  相似文献

New chemical and modal analyses are presented of magmatic rocks and pyroxenes nodules from the Somma-Vesuvius volcano and of trachytes from the surrounding area. Geochemical evidence is employed in checking the generally accepted suggestion that magma composition develops from that of trachyte into phonolitic tephrite and finally into tephritic leucitite (vesuvite) by assimilation of dolomite. At the Somma stage of the volcano, phonolitic tephrites (tephritic phonolites) alone have been produced. Vesuvius lavas (tephritic leucitites) are comparatively high in K2O, CaO, F, Cl, Mn, Cu, Sr and Ba and low in SiO2 and Nb. The formation of vesuvites by assimilation of dolomitic sedimentary rocks, combined with gravity-separation of early-formed pyroxenes from a trachytic or tephritic magma, is improbable as shown by chemical balances between the respective igneous and sedimentary rocks.  相似文献

The possibilities of exoelectron spectroscopy to investigate defects in dielectrics are demonstrated for phenakite Be2SiO4, its structural analogs Zn2 SiO4, Be2GeO4, solid solutions Be2Si1?x Ge x O4 (x=0÷1) and α-quartz. Emission maxima at 330 and 670 K in phenakite have been found to be due to [GeO4]5? andE' centers, respectively. Structural disturbances in the silicon and oxygen positions have been shown to control the exoemission activity of the crystals. Radiation induced decrease of exoemission activity connected with generation ofE' centers by neutron irradiation has been discovered. The energy level scheme of active centers in the subsurface region of Be2SiO4 has been established.  相似文献

Raman spectra of Ni2SiO4 spinel (O h 7 Z=8) have been measured in the temperature range from 20 to 600 °C and the Raman active vibrations (A 1g +E g +3F 2g ) have been assigned. A calculation of the optically active lattice vibrations of this spinel has been made, assuming a potential function which combines general valence and short range force constants. The values of the force constants at 20 and 500 °C have been calculated from the vibrational frequencies of the observed Raman spectra and infrared (IR) spectral data. The Ni spinel at 20 °C has a prominently small Si-O bond stretching force constant of K(SiO)=2.356 ~ 2.680 md/Å and a large Ni-O bond stretching constant of K(NiO)=0.843 ~ 1.062 md/Å and these force constants at 500 °C decrease to K(SiO)=2.327 ~ 2.494 md/Å and K(NiO)=0.861 ~ 0.990 md/Å. The Si-O bond is noticeably weakened at high temperatures, despite the small thermal expantion from 1.657 Å (20 °C) to 1.660 Å (500 °C). These changes of the interatomic force constants of the spinel at high temperatures are in accord with the thermal structure changes observed by X-ray diffraction study. The weakened Si-O bond is consistent with the fact that Si atoms in the spinel lattice can diffuse at significant rates at elevated temperature.  相似文献
