Abstract:Monitoring acoustic emissions (AE) is important to study the earthquake mechanism in rock frictional experiments. Traditional AE observations are dominated by the triggered recordings, making it difficult to detect the weakly AE signals. In this paper, we present an AE monitoring method based on the matched filter technique (MFT). The method is used to analysis the 13-channel continuous AE recordings during the stick-slip experiment of a~1.5-meter simulated fault. The results showed that detected AE events were increased by~5 times and the relative magnitude of completeness was reduced by~0.3 compared to the AE events which were detected by traditional method. Furthermore, with the detected catalog, we observed the AE rate showed a power-law acceleration and the AE events clustered adjacent to the rupture initiation point of the stick-slip events before the instability. We also observed a power-law decay in AE rate, a slower decay of AE rate right after the instability, and spatially migration along the fault of the AE events with logarithmic time after the instability. By comparison of our results with natural seismological observations, we suggest that combining the method presented here with complementary approaches will enhance the understanding the evolution of the fault system either in the laboratory or for seismological applications.
