Abstract:Based on three-dimensional Biot’s consolidation theory, the computer program is developed by FEM to perform the coupled analysis of the groundwater flow and the soil skeleton deformation. The spatial distributions of foundation pit deformation, excess pore water pressure and soil water potential are studied and compared with the corresponding results from two-dimensional analysis. It is demonstrated that the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and the settlement of the ground surface in the middle section are larger than those in the margin sections due to the spatial effect, whereas excess pore pressure and soil water potential are smaller in the middle section. The results from three-dimensional analysis are compared with those from two-dimensional analysis; and it is shown that the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and the settlement of the ground surface obtained from two-dimensional analysis are both larger.
