Numerical simulation of heavy metal cations transport controlled by clay-solidified grouting curtain in landfills

Abstract:The heavy metal cations transport in clay-solidified grouting curtain is studied for the pollution of groundwater in Maiyuan Domestic Waste Landfill in Nanchang city. A couple mathematical model for groundwater flow and heavy metal cations migration was developed based on analyzing the characteristics of migration and transformation of heavy metal leaching from the landfill to groundwater through the clay-solidified grouting curtain. The pollution of groundwater of Maiyuan problem is used to provide a quantitative verification and validation of the model. The result indicates that the retention ratio of clay-solidified grouting curtain to heavy metal cations is higher than 94.5 %; heavy metal concentration values increase with longer time and decrease with distance from the pollution source. Combined with the measured data in landfill site, clay-solidified grouting curtain was proved to serve as a sufficiently effective vertical barrier against heavy metal cations transport in municipal solid waste landfills.
