Abstract:The huge multilayer extension tectonics in the Himalayan lithosphere include the higher Himalayan metamorphic core complexes, the Pulan-Yadong multilayer detachment faults, the Sajia-Kangma chain uplifts and extension structures, the Yarlungzangbo River graben-horst structure and the pull-apart basins produced by the strike-ship faults. The Himalayan orogenic belt in asymmetry, and consists of the South Himalayan thrust-stack belt and the North Himalayan extension-detachment belt composed of all these structures above-mentioned. The gravity spreading governed the structural framework in the Hamalayas; in addition, the multilayer denudation, thermal uplift and isostatic adjustment in the lithosphere, during the formation of the Hamalayan orogenic belt, contributed greatly to the framework. Extension is resulting or will result in the thinning of the Himalayan crust which was thickened by twice.
