STRUCTURE PARAMETERS AND CLASSIFICATION OF INTERSTRATIFIED MINERALS

Interstratification is a kind of common phenomena observed in material structure. This paper tries to give an outline for interstratified minerals in terms of the concept of interstratification, the structure parameters of interstratification and the classification of interstratified minerals. As viewed from the types of crystal layers or their composition, interstratified minerals can be classified as homo-fundamental layer interstratified minerals and hetero-fundamental layer ones. Then they can be classified as regular and irregular interstratified minerals in terms of the coefficient of variation (CV) of d-value, one of the structure parameters of interstratification. Finally, they can also be classified as three ordering types: order, disorder and banded ones in terms of other three structure parameters of interstratification-ratio of component layers, probability of mixed-layer sequences, and Reichweite.
