Petrological characteristics and environmental analysis of the biolithite from the Ch-ihsia Formation of Mt. Qixia, Nanjing
Abstract:This paper deals with the application of fossil petrological method to the identification of the microstrueture of the fossil fragments from the Chihsia Formation, including foramini-feras, red alage, green alage, brachiopods, gastropods, bryozoans, echinoderms, corals, hydro-zoans, sponge spioules, ostracods, trilobites, etc., Based on these different assemblages of fossil fragments, this formation may be further divided into several microfacies zones.During the period of deposition, the Permian Chihsia Formation of South China was a shallow earbonatite platform. In the area, around Mt. Chihsia, Nanjing, the water body was limited, the hydrodynamics became weaker, and no carbonate grains or sparry cements were formed. The storage of oil and gas is poor. However, since the water body was devoid of terrigenous debris and are of relatively low turbidity, such an envoronment was favourable to the growth and reproduction of organisms, thus resulting in the abundance of organic substance, especially the alage gymnocodiums contained in the Stink Limestone Member, which provided an excellent condition for the formation of oil and gas in the strata.
