| Abstract: | In my Henry Stopes Lecture I recorded an abraded group of artifacts as ‘Derivative?’; reasons will now be given for removing the question mark and dividing the Clacton industry into two phases, Primitive and Advanced, the latter having been the subject of the lecture. The present improved definition of the Primitive phase has brought out the superior quality of the retouch in the trimmed flakes of the Advanced phase, which is nearer to the High Lodge industry, the main difference between the two phases being in the trimmed flakes.The opinion is confirmed that the Clactonian industries are probably rooted in the ancient traditions of the great Pebble Tool cultures. |
