Abstract:In this paper, the technical details of the real time method (FinDer:Finite Fault Rupture Detector) for detection finite fault rupture parameters used in California ShakeAlert earthquake warning system in the United States are described. The performance of this method is evaluated by means of the observational data of the Mw7.6 Chichi earthquake occurred in 1999, the Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake occurred in 2008 and the Ms7.0 Lushan earthquake in 2013, and 80 small to moderate earthquakes recorded by the K-NET of Japan. The results show that under the condition of dense seismic network, the FinDer method can accurately predict the fault rupture length L, strike θ, and orientation of an earthquake in real time. FinDer method can only determine the length and strike of the fault under the condition that the fault rupture has occurred, and cannot predict the possible final length or strike of the fault. The accuracy of near/far-source region classification is the main factor affecting the accuracy of the method and the main source of the error of the method.
