A Review on Endmember Selection Methods in the Course of Mixed Pixel Decomposition of Remote Sensing Images

There are a lot of mixed pixels in the moderate spatial resolution remote sensing images.The spectral reflectance of the mixed pixels is the synthesis of spectral reflectance of several land cover types.The radiation characteristic of mixed pixels is different from the pure pixel's.Mixed pixel does not belong to any typical land cover type completely.The existence of mixed pixels is the main reason that traditional remote sensing classification at pixel level is difficult to meet practicability.It is necessary to solve mixed pixel decomposition and make remote sensing application reaching sub-pixel level from pixel level,so as to improve classification accuracy of remote sensing image,which need to decompose mixed pixel as several different component or endmembers.Endmembers are land cover features with pure spectrum.Endmember selection is one of the most important and pivotal steps in the course of mixed pixel decomposition of remote sensing images.It is because that the effect of endmember selection has a direct influence on mixed pixel decomposition precision.The given background of endmember appearance,the existent endmember selection approaches and endmember selection methods are reviewed in detail in this paper.And several principles,which are followed when selecting and constructing endmembers are put forward.
