Abstract:Based on analysis of the annual numbers of earthquakes occurring in the deceleration and acceleration phases of long-period variation in earth rotation for some regions of the world, some results are obtained: In the whole world, the annual number of earthquakes in the deceleration phase is a little higher than that in the acceleration phase for earthquakes of M≥7.0, while there is no obvious difference for earthquakes of M≥8.0 ; For earthquakes of M≥8.5, the annual number of the earthquakes occurring in the deceleration phase is higher than that in the acceleration phase. For the eastern and northern Pacific Ocean seismic belt, it seems that the annual number of earthquakes occurring in the deceleration phase is congruously higher than that in the acceleration phase, but for the western and southern Pacific Ocean seismic belt, the annual number of earthquakes occurring in the deceleration phase is congruously a little lower than that in the acceleration phase. In the Europe-Asia seismic belt, the number of earthquakes occurring in the deceleration phase is a little lower than that in the acceleration phase. In the eastern and western segments of the Europe-Asia seismic belt and the Great Triangle seismic region, the annual number of earth- quakes occurring in the deceleration phase is congruously lower than that in the acceleration phase. In the region including Sichuan and Yunnan provinces of China and northern Myanmar, the annual number of earthquakes occurring in the deceleration phase is 3.8 times as high as that in the acceleration phase for the area of higher sea level, and 3 earthquakes in the area of lower sea level all occurred in the acceleration phase. In the Qinghai-Tibet area and northern India, the annual number of earthquakes of Ms~7.5 occurring in the acceleration phase is 4 times as high as that in the deceleration phase, indicating that the earthquakes of Ms≥7.5 in this region is highly related to the acceleration of rotation of the Earth. In the region around Taiwan, the annual number of earthquakes of Ms≥7.5 occurring in the acceleration phase is 2.4 times as high as that in the deceleration phase, which shows that the earthquakes of Ms≥7.5 in this region is highly related to the acceleration of rotation of the Earth. The results obtained above are of certain significance to further understanding the relationship between earthquakes and earth rotation.
