Abstract:The daily feeding rate of Scylla serrata zoea 1(Z1 ), and the effect of feeding and starvation on growth and respiration of larvae were studied . The results showed that: the daily feeding rate of Z1 is increasing with the rise of the density of rotifer( Brachionus plicatilis), but it has no obvious relation to the development phase. Z1 feeding habit belongs to passive feeding. According to energy conversion efficiency , the proper rotifer density should be about 30~ 40ind/cm3 during 0~1d of Z1, and it will be beyond 40ind/cm3 two days later . The relationship between dry weight or energy content of larvae and development time can be represented by exponential equation (R = 329.55DW-1.090, r2 = 0.965, n = 4). Oxygen consumption rate is decreasing with development of larvae and relations with DW follows power function, but it is increasing with feeding and specific dynamic action( SDA ) of Z1 is about 10.1% of daily ingested energy. Energy lost by environmental stress will be compensated in this or in subsequent stage through delaying developmental period at the range of <PNR (Point of no return) and>PRS (Point of reserve saturation).
