SOME IMPROVEMENTS ON THE PREPARATION OF POLISHED SECTIONS OF ORES

In this article the author describes some techniques and experiences in cutting, rough grinding, fine grinding and polishing in the preparation of polished surface for ore microscopic examination. Instead of grinding on a plate glass as commonly used in previous methods, the fine grinding procedures are completed on a motor-driven disc. By applying this method not only a lot of time is saved, but also the quality of polished surface is greatly improved. The polishing of soft and intermediate hard minerals is done with cotton-shag, while hard minerals are polished on a copper lap covered with wollen cloth. The procedures in preparation of polthins, thin sections (polished at double surface) used for gas-liquid inclusion study and resin mounts of concentrates are introduced in more detail as well. In addition, the author has also improved the cutting machine.
