Distribution of glutamatergic, GABAergic, dopaminergic, acetycholinergic and serotonergic neurons in the visceral ganglion of the bivalve Cristaria plicata
Abstract:The distribution and morphology of glutamate-, GABA-, dopamine- acetycholine- and serotone-containing neurons in the visceral ganglion of the bivalve Cristaria plicata were observed by Hematoxylin-Eosin staining method and SP immunohistochemical technique. The cellular layer of the visceral ganglion had glutamatergic, GABAergic and dopaminergic neurons in small size and acetycholinergic neurons in medium size, and most of serotonergic neurons were in large cell bodies. Moreover, dopaminergic neurons were widely distributed in the whole cortex of the ganglion, whereas acetycholinergic neurons were mainly localized near the pallial nerves and the roots of branchial nerves. GABAergic fibers could be seen in the central neuropil. The present results indicate that the visceral ganglion in the visceral ganglion of the Cristaria plicata contains glutamatergic, GABAergic, dopaminergic, acetycholinergic and serotonergic neurons with different quantities and densities.
