Abstract:
Fine sediments and their transport processes affect water quality and play an important role in blocking navigation channels. Beside the detailed studies on physical influences only very little is known about the influence of biological activities on the transport processes of fine sediments. The few investigations indicate a significant modification of the the stability. Stabilization can be caused by agglutination of particles or smoothening of the bed surface caused by covering the particles or filling inter-particle voids with secretion of micro-organisms. The Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management (IWW) in cooperation with the Institute of Botany at Aachen University of Technology carried out experiments to get detailed information about the biogenic stabilization of fine sediments. The used species Navicula pelliclosa,.Nitzschia palea and Phormidium foveolarum are representative algae in rivers and reservoirs. Erosion experiments in a small erosion unit revealed a significant stabilization and smoothening of the sediment layer by the grown biofilm.
