Abstract:Abstract:The Tarim basin has undergone several seawater invasions from Cretaceous to Tertiary during the basin evolution, which brought abundant sources of salty materials. Then under extremely drought climate environment, wide and thick beds of salt rock accumulated in the west of the Tarim basin. Therefore,it has been regarded as a favorable and important region to explore potash ore in our country. Based on the analysis of mineral-formation conditions of sylvite in two depression sub-basins, the Shache and Kuche basins, combined with the study of coupling relationships between the element geochemical characteristics and palaeoareal and palaeosalinity, we propose that the forming-potassium conditions of the Shache basin are superior to the Kuche basin on the whole. The results also indicate that the favorable blocks of forming-potassium are situated in deep water lagoon, and the belts close to marine facies are better for forming potassium. It can be concluded that Kuoshitashi and Wuheshalu in the Shache basin and the Dawanqi area in the Kuche Basin have the best conditions for the formation of potassium so that they should be the prior exploration targets of solid sylvite deposits in the Tarim basin.
