Tar ‘specks’ in the North Atlantic

A number of dark specks retained on filters, through which seawater had been filtered, contained material that absorbed UV light very strongly. This material was most likely sunken pieces of tar. The amount was 0.12 μg/l on an average and was independent of hydrographic parameters.
