Abstract: | For more than 3700 million years of Earth history, the magma-to-mud cycle has steadily generated new crustal rock. Mud formed by rock weathering coats the Earth's surface and helps to sustain life. Reactive clay minerals are the key components of mud, and control the absorption and release of chemicals and fluids that are critical for the recycling of crustal rocks. |
