Regionalized Soil Formation Features and Their Application in Basic Soil Classification and Soil Quality Assessment

Regional soil formation features refer to local soil formation background features and soil properties determined by these local-scale factors. They together make up not only criteria for basic soil category classification but also indicators for regional soil quality assessment. The components of local soil formation features of some typical regions are analyzed and presented. The paper discusses the common application of them in regional soil classification of basic categories and soil quality assessment. A soil quality assessment model incorporating different levels of soil formation features is introduced which focuses more contributing factors rather than nutrient status of surface soils only as adopted by some current soil quality evaluation methods. For the purpose of effective use of local soil formation features, the structure of soil and terrain digital database is introduced.
