The early Precambrium volcano-sedimentary rock assemblages — greenstone belts of the Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa, contain three different types of gold mineralizations: a) sulfide-bearing gold-quartz veins, b) conformable, massive sulfide ores, and c) disseminated complex sulfide ores in porphyry bodies. It is suggested that the ultimate source of the gold in the vein-deposits has to be sought in the primitive peridotitic and basaltic komatiites of the Onverwacht Group rather than in the intruding granites. The komatiites which form the base of the Swaziland Sequence contain up to four times more gold (0,02 ppm) than younger, less primitive equivalent rock types. The initially minute gold contents of the Onverwacht rocks have been reconstituted and concentrated in three to four stages by a number of sedimentary and metamorphic processes to form sub-economic to economic gold deposits. These deposits, in turn, are the primary ores for the giant Witwatersrand gold placers.Ultramafic and mafic rocks of similar composition as the komatiites of the Onverwacht Group are potentially enriched in gold and, therefore, could be the principal transporters of gold from the mantle, which was probably only little differentiated at these times. The close association of such primitive rock assemblages, which are manifestations of the earliest petrogenic and metallogenic processes, with the formation of the Archean crust is evident in the greenstone belts of South Africa and could explain the global abundance of gold deposits in Precambrian rocks.
